With the #asianreadathon2024 organized by @readwithcindy coming up, I wanted to show y’all my tbr and some book recommendations if you wanna join. I doubt that I’ll get to all of these, but I’m hoping to at least read Godslayers for it. Also when I had made all my posts I didn’t realize that one of the books was under @wednesdaybooks which is a @stmartinspress imprint, so I redacted it because of the #speakupsmp boycott. Anyways here are the prompts and the books I’m hoping to fulfill with them: Read a book by an Asian author and read an underrated book: Godslayers is the sequel to a super underrated book. Read a book that feels timeless: The Magic Fish is my first choice, because it’s about fairy tales which are timeless in how old they are and how they’re retold over centuries. If my library hold doesn’t come in time, Y/N is my alternative because themes of obsession and idolizations of certain people have always existed. Read a debut book: An Ember in the Ashes is a debut, but if i don’t get my library hold on time, Nayra and the Djinn is my second choice. This book isn’t the author’s debut but withcindy said we could be loose with the prompts by reading a new to us author. Read a book with a story, character, or world that represents what you would want in your next life: Deep as the Sky, Red as the Sea. This follows a pirate, and while I know real life pirates are not like the romanticized ones in media, I still wanna be a pirate in my next life. 🏳️🌈 Sharing my favorite graphic novel because I need everyone to read it Tiến Phong is a Vietnamese-American boy who wants to come out to his parents but doesn't know how to say the word gay in Vietnamese. Instead, he connects with his family through their shared love of fairy tales. It's been a while since I read it but I still remember crying so much with it. Everything from the writing to the design to the themes is so perfect in this graphic novel. It has really good queer representation and it explores themes of family and grief and immigration with so much care. Aujourd'hui je vous propose deux choses : une image moche et le tag P.O.K.E.M.O.N fait par mes soins (Aka Flou). Tout un programme... Après cette courte présentation, je vous salue et je vais parler de mes choix rapidement pour pas trop perdre les moins attentifs du fond de la classe. J'aurai pu mettre des romans mais j'ai décidé de ne mettre que des bd et des manga (qui finissent tous en moins de 15 tomes) Peau d'homme est une superbe bd féministe, dans lequel une femme enfile littéralement la peau d'un homme pour voir ce que ça fait! Un beau conte mêlant humour et réflection ! Pluto est un manga mêlant policier/thriller et de la SF avec des robots. C'est brillant comme tout ce que fait cet auteur 😍 Les Omniscients est une bd jeunesse très sympa où des ados se voient attribuer des pouvoirs et toute la connaissance. Kasane est un manga triller psychologique avec du fantastique où une jeune fille défigurée peut prendre l'apparence de la personne qu'elle embrasse. Un chef d'oeuvre se mêlant à l'univers du théâtre ! Ken'en est aussi un manga mais cette fois-ci d'aventure entre une créature mi homme mi singe (Yokai) et un chasseur de Yokai. C'est aussi une superbe amitié qui se dévoile au fur des tomes. Elin est un manga sur une jeune fille qui se passionne pour les créatures fantastiques de son monde et les soigner. Un des plus beaux mangas que j'ai pu lire, le dessin est sublime ainsi que les créatures et l'histoire ! Monster est un manga sur la course poursuite entre un chirurgien et le patient serial killer qu'il a sauvé de la mort. Je sais dit comme ça ça donne pas l'image du manga qui est beaucoup autour de la recherche, de la psychologie et de divers réflection ! The Magic fish est une bd ado mêlant des contes vietnamiens (mais vous en reconnaîtrez des bribes pour certains) et le quotidien d'une mère qui a fui son pays en guerre et d'un fils qui n'arrive pas à se confier à elle sur ses sentiments. I loved the creativity in using fairy tales and real life in a beautiful way to communicate. Oh, I'm buying this graphic novel as I loved the art and the unique creativity. The Magic Fish is a story about family, immigration, grief, and love. What a pleasant surprised as I instantly loved everything the story and characters. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A beautiful, beautiful graphic novel. I love the integration of so many powerful and well-developed themes: queerness and mother-son relationships; immigration and language barriers; and grief. The art and artistic styles (such as the color palates for each POV) - impeccable. The emotional pull built on the author’s life - incomparable. Not to mention the interweaving of fairytales. A definite standout.

~Currently Reading: Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore~ 🪻 I finished Ruthless Vows yesterday and immediately started this Great Gatsby-inspired gem that has been on my tbr for quite a while! I won't spend too much time talking about Ruthless Vows, but I will say that despite liking the plot of Divine Rivals more, it was still a 5⭐️ read for me! 🐟The magic fish - Trung Le Nguyen 🧜♀️🍊🍑🪄 Okay... This is one of my favorite pieces I've read in a while. I have seen it recommended here a few times, and it was good yeah, but also really pleasant to look at, beautiful, clever, moving, wholesome, gentle and it gave me many new points to think of. It tells about a Vietnamese family with an immigration background. The family, the boy and his parents are reading stories to each other that help them to communicate and share feelings and their own experiences with each other. The boy is also trying to find courage to tell his parents that he might not be straight. First of all I love the art! The way the artist draws the characters, little details, those mermaid aesthetics, fabrics, the hair, juicy peaches, plants, moony and starry dresses, quite everything.. I think it's clever how the artist is using different colors to move the story from reality, to the book they are reading, to memories etc. (Next part might be a bit revealing about the story..) Second, I love the story. I think it has everything about it, the life of main character at school and home, traumatic past of the parents and grandparents is all real and interesting. The fairytails they read knit the whole story together and are very symbolic in many ways. There are two very well known and repeated fairytails picked "The Cinderella" (the adaptation of it) and " The little mermaid" but the author manages to give something new out of them. The way he compares the story of the little mermaid to immigration is very insightful I think.. and the Cinderella keeps taking new forms depending on who is the storyteller. Everyone is coloring the story with the way they have experienced their life. War traumas giving it even a bloody and spooky turn. Happy Lunar New Year! 🧧I'm a bit late for the festivities but I hope it's still acceptable timing to share this humble book recommendation. I read this graphic novel at the end of last year and I still think about its stunning illustrations and heartfelt ending. 🐉🐉🐉 Here's my review from Storygraph: This book has my whole heart! The story of a Vietnamese boy struggling to come out to this family while being beautifully intertwined with relevant fairy tales is 100% my cup of tea. And the gorgeous illustrations take this book to a whole new level, with its detailed line art and use of color. Yellow = Tiến's parents' life in Vietnam, pink = Tiến in the present day, blue = a fairy tale being told by someone in the present day. Yes, the ending made me cry (which almost distracted me from the thoughtful author's note). If you're only going to read one graphic novel this year, pick this one! 🐉🐉🐉 Let me know what you did to celebrate Lunar New Year! I made tteokguk (rice cake soup) for the first time and it was delicious.

Zu Beginn der Feiertage möchte ich euch ein riesiges Highlight aus dem letzten Lesemonat genauer vorstellen. "The Magic Fish" von @trungles dreht sich um das Coming-Out unseres Protagonisten, der allerdings sehr darum ringt, wie er es seinen in die USA migrierten Eltern sagen soll, fehlen ihm im Vietnamesischen doch die passenden Worte. Doch die Graphic Novel hat viele Facetten, so geht es auch darum, dass Mutter und Sohn abends immer gemeinsam Märchen lesen, um ihre Sprache zu verbessern und dabei begegnen uns so einige (wunderschöne!) Geschichten innerhalb der Geschichte. Nicht selten kommen wir dabei an Themen vorbei, die das Geschehen in der echten Welt streifen oder auch die Vergangenheit der Eltern. Dazu ist das ganze auch noch unheimlich schön und liebevoll gezeichnet. "The Magic Fish" ist insgesamt so ein einfühlsames Werk, das zwar auch einigen Schmerz aufzeigt, aber auch, wie wir einander mit Respekt und Empathie begegnen können, auch wenn - oder gerade weil - wir das eine oder andere Schlimme in unserem Leben erlebt haben. Das Werk ist ein wahrer Herzenswärmer und ich möchte ihn euch absolut empfehlen. Inzwischen ist das ganze auch auf Deutsch als "Der magische Fisch" bei @crosscult erschienen. The Magic Fish 🧜🏽♀️✨ by Trung Le Nguyen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars My second graphic novel of the year! And what a beautifully wholesome story this graphic novel was. This graphic novels tells an intergenerational story of a mother and son struggling to relate to each other—— the mother a Vietnamese immigrant trying to make the US feel like home; her son trying to find the words to come out to his parents as gay. Through fairytales, they are able to find common ground and understand one another. I loved the art style of this graphic novel; the bright colors and details added to the storytelling for sure. I also greatly appreciated the authors decision to rethink the immigrant experience through stories not as an all encompassing fairytale (where we see all the trials and tribulations that tend to lead to a satisfying happy ending) but a story that carries on even when its subjects don’t want it to or attempt to control it. It’s a subtle commentary on how we outside of the diaspora tend to conflate immigrant stories and make them more than what they simply can be; a story of change and acceptance of life not going according to plan. Und dann waren bei den Graphic Novels auch direkt zwei Highlights dabei, die nicht nur in die Jahreshighlights, sondern in die Lebenslesehighlights wandern: "Diebin" und "The Magic Fish" (kürzlich auch auf Deutsch erschienen) sind zwei unheimlich besondere Werke, deren Gemeinsamkeiten in queeren Themen sowie einer irre tollen Gestaltung liegen, aber beide sind in ihrer Erzählweise auch wirklich besonders 😍 Eigentlich muss ich sie euch hier auch nochmal einzeln zeigen. Der Rest war okay bis gut. Ich hoffe, nächste Woche Zeit zum Drehen zu finden, dann seht ihr sie auch nochmal in bewegten Bildern. Oh goodness was this story so what I needed right now. Tied is a sweet kid who can’t find the right words; to tell his parents he’s gay, to tell his friends he needs support. I'm not gonna lie to you this month was a pretty light month. For our top three we have The Magic Fish by @trungles The Borrow a Boyfriend Club by @pagepowars A Condition Called Love by Megumi Morino I didn't expect to like The Magic Fish simply because I am afraid of fish. But this is a beautiful story that shows how people can connect to and through stories. The Borrow a Boyfriend Club I knew I was going to enjoy straight away. It's Gay, it's trans and it has that OHSHC feel that I adore. I think that it does a great job of putting a trans experience into words. #qotd - what is your form of escapism? hi banana besties 🍌 it’s been another rough week -- I wasn’t doing so great mentally + was still pre-occupied with the P$ situation but I’m in a much less chaotic place now mentally. I tend to retreat and let my brain rot with endless tiktoks, lose myself in a book, workout if I have the motivation to, doodle, or get some rest. also I know not everyone can resort to escapism (especially now), but I am sending love 🫶🏼 *** The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen A graphic novel that follows Tiến as he navigates life’s complexities through fairytales. From flowing dresses and mermaid tales, to lingering war-torn memories, to everyday life, Nguyen beautifully weaves together an immigrant story full of family, friendships, and fairytales -- covering topics such guilt, loss, sacrifice, love, identity, queerness, and new beginnings. Colors were used to differentiate between different storylines and I loved seeing the shift’s between each. Red (present): The bond between Tiến and his mother was so genuine and soft. Despite the difference in generations and language barriers, I love that they both made an effort to sit down together and share fairytales. With his mom, we see struggles of guilt caused by fleeing/immigrating. With Tiến, we see him grapple with friendship, queerness, and love. Blue (fairytale): Each fairytale echo’d one I already knew (ex. Cinderella, The Little Mermaid). Despite the different cultural context, it was cool seeing the connections between the stories I grew up with and how they played into the stories of Tiến and his mother. The illustrations for these felt especially intricate and magical 🐟 Yellow (past): Through flashes, we piece Tiếns’ mother’s past. Fleeing a war torn country, leaving her mother, finding love, and starting a new life abroad with her partner are all elements that haunt, but also make up her foundation. Through this pov, we’re able to compare and see the past and present (red) realities take shape -- along with understanding all the hardships in between. Overall, this is such a stunningly captivating illustrated story and easily a new fav. I highly recommend picking this up!

The Magic Fish 📖🍑🩰 What a tender, loving story. I go around thinking I don’t connect with graphic novels and then read one like this, where the emotion is so fully felt in its simplicity and truth. The connection between Tiến and his mother Helen was so sweet. Her own story of immigration and change paired with Tiến’s reticence and their shared understanding through stories hit me right in the heart. The actual art style was beautiful, especially for the interspersed fairy tales, but I was honestly more moved by and interested in Tiến and his family and friends than the fairy tales—although the author’s note shows how much thought was put into their portrayal and art! Aujourd'hui je vous reviens mon avis sur The magic fish, qui est un excellent roman graphique! (Résumé en commentaire) C’est vraiment un livre qui aborde le sujet du Coming out d’une façon belle et authentique. J’ai trouver que c’était vraiment juste naturel pour le personnage. On a pas l’impression, en lisant ce livre que c’est une punition d’être gay. Le personnage principale ne lutte pas contre lui même, comme beaucoup le font et c’est une perspective très différente de ce que j’ai souvent l’habitude de lire. On as vraiment ce sentiment que c’est une chose normale. Que c'est beau d'être queer et c'est réconfortant, je trouve. J’ai adorer les illustrations, qui sont vraiment uniques avec un style vraiment magnifique et de toute beauté, qui va très bien avec l’histoire. L’histoire en elle même est authentique, douce et belle. Une histoire qui va certainement me marqué d’une certaine façon. Et un livre qui aborde le sujet de coming out de façon très douce et réconfortante. Un magnifique roman graphique remplis de vie et d’amour, que je recommande a 1000%! (Surtout a ceux qui ont aimer Heartstopper, je crois bien que vous allez aimer celui-ci 👀)
