I was intrigued by the diary in the story, and the two college students who are trying to figure out, well, life. The characters are very relatable. They aren’t perfect (because no one is), but they must trust God and the plans He has for them. . This is a beautiful story with every emotion. B.M. Each Fortune sister is at loose ends when they board the Titanic on April 10, 1912. Alice is unsettled because of the fortune a fortune teller had given her when in Egypt. Mable is tired of living life the way she has and wants to go to university and learn, something her father is completely against. And Flora is engaged to be married to a man that she doesn’t want to marry. During their journey on the Titanic, each of these three sisters is forced to think about what they really want. The fateful night of the Titanic sinking changes everything they had known and might just give them the opportunity and blessing of living life the way they want to following this tragedy. I am a huge Titanic fan so when I saw a book coming out by an author I already enjoyed I knew I had to read this. I was pulled in from the very beginning as the beginning of this book sets the scene for the tragic night we know is yet to come. I really enjoyed how this story was based off of the real Fortune sisters and liked how some of their real adventures were tied in to make these dynamic characters. This book flowed nicely and had a lot of detail about what it would have been like to be on the Titanic. I liked how this story followed multiple main characters instead of just settling on one or two characters. The multiple points of view made for a fun read and a good way to see life on the Titanic through different eyes. I am always going to read anything related to the Titanic because this tragedy fascinates me. This may be my first adult fiction set on the titanic (and definitely my first Britannic setting) and it was everything I could have hoped it would be! And more, since I wouldn’t have imagined a ghost story intertwined with it. On the surface, this is the story of Annie, a maid aboard the Titanic who survived and goes on to be a nurse aboard its sister ship, The Britannic. Most of the story takes place aboard the Titanic and centers around an assumed haunting - something is on the Titanic and it seems to want revenge. We have an assortment of characters we are following (which I normally dislike, I’m a one character kind of girlie) and they are all somehow tangled up with one another and whatever is loose on the ship. This story (though sad at times) left me feeling especially light and with a refreshing view of humanity. It’s a good look at jumping to conclusions about people who may seem unsavory or who you assume has bad intentions. I guess I sort of ended up loving each of these characters a bit by the end. I’m CERTAINLY going to pick up Katsu’s The Hunger in the very near future!
If you are a lover of Historical Fiction, broken people and love triangles, I would suggest giving it a read. It just didn't quite hit with me, but perhaps it will be perfect for you. A belated review for a book I read at the end of December/beginning of January. I have been busy busy and March is def coming in like lion as far as things to do. Unsinkable is a dual timeline following Violet, a woman who survives three shipwrecks, and Daphne trying to impress her famous father and becoming a spy during the war. What I liked: I think with most dual timelines, I usually like one storyline more than the other. In this case, I felt like Daphne was a bit more interesting. Her joining a spy network, a famous father, and mysterious past - sign me up. Violet is very duty-bound but she’s tough - surviving three shipwrecks. I can’t imagine the trauma and guilt surrounding that. What didn’t work for me: this may be on me but I felt like this was marketed as Titanic historical fiction and most of the novel doesn’t take place on Titanic. I wanted a bit more depth to the characters. It’s an enjoyable read but I felt like a lot of the drama and emotion was surface level. Who should read it: You like historical women’s fiction, the book is not Titanic heavy - the title refers more to the women being able to overcome a lot of hardship. There is a WW2 heavy storyline so if you’re burned out on that timeframe, you may want to look elsewhere. QOTD: you’ve been shipwrecked on an island, what three things are you bringing with you?

I knew of course Carpathia rescuing the passengers but hadn't given much thought to it. It's hard to put my feelings into words. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down, listening every chance I could (a break happened when my cat child died 💔). The captain and the crew of the Carpathia deserve all the praise and I'm in awe of their actions and how everyone came together.. even giving up their own rooms and clothes for the survivors. I did have a laugh though how the Captain handled the press on two occasions. I would highly recommend this one. Listen to the afterword as well. I really enjoyed the dual timeline and thought both stories were really well written. I slightly preferred the 1912 storyline, it felt more exciting, probably because it was based around the most famous shipwreck in the world. I like some of the characters were real people Abbs that others were based on real people. I've never heard of Violet Jessop, but will definitely be looking to read her book in the future. I thought the 2022 timeline was slower paced, which balanced brilliantly with the Titanic one. Setting it just after covid and lockdown made it so relatable. That feeling that nothing happened for 2 years, so plans need to be delayed while we catch up. I'm also fascinated by the difference in reporting of news stories and disasters over the years. We're so used to instant news and constantly being in contact these days that the horror of not knowing who, if anyone, would come back from the Titanic seems unimaginable. UNSINKABLE by Jenni L. Walsh Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The perfect book for a bookclub! I couldn't stop sharing interesting facts that I had learned from it with my family. The story is told by two women in two different time periods. Violet Jessop is Miss Unsinkable. She works as a stewardess on luxury cruises, including the Titanic. Daphne Chaundanson has tried to impress her film star father for 30 years. During WWII, she is recruited to work with the Special Operations Executive unit because she speaks so many languages fluently. These two stories parallel and intersect with each other in the most fascinating ways during two wars and several shipwrecks. The author's note at the end explained that Violet Jessop was a real person and the stories about Daphne were based on other women in the SOE. Highly recommended for ALL historical fiction fans. P.S. The fourth smoke stack on the Titanic was just for show. The ship only needed three. BOOK REVIEW - ORPHANS OF THE STORM by @celia.imrie ——- This book was fantastic, not least because it is all based on fact. It’s the type of story you think too confounding to be realistic, but when you read the “behind the scene” chapters at the end, you realise it’s not just based on fact, but almost entirely true. I loved it all the more because I saved it to read during my recent stay at @titanichotelbelfast which is in the old Harland & Wolff building, the shipbuilders who designed and built Titanic. It follows the story predominantly of Marcella, who meets Michael Navratil when she signs up for a seamstress course in Nice around the turn of the last century. The pair fall in love, get married and have two sons, but soon after their wedding, Michael seems to turn on Marcella, pushing her through his cruelty to pursue a divorce. As their world unravels, they find themselves linked to the biggest maritime disaster of all time. I loved the way Imrie and her researcher @morgan.fidelis brought the worlds of early 1900s Nice, London, New York and on board the Titanic to life. Both have ancestors who were on Titanic, and you can tell this was a passion project that pays off as a fictional recreation. Almost as good as the story, is the author’s note at the end where you realise how true to life the whole crazy plot was. If you’re a Titanic fan, or even if you’re not, I recommend this read.

I have thoughts and feelings and emotions B̷R̷I̷N̷G̷ ✨ 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪 ✨ B̷Y̷P̷A̷S̷S̷ This one barely squeaks by with a “Borrow” instead of a “Bypass” and that’s solely because the author was able to weave in enough super interesting historical facts about shipwrecks (especially relating to the Titanic) that I went down a research rabbit hole for like 2 hours after finishing. (& then lightly attacked my husband with all the knowledge that I had recently acquired) Got this one as a First Reads from KU in April or May and it really had a lot of promise (and is also super highly rated, so maybe I’m just being too picky?), but by the end I really had to actively try not to skim. Both of the timelines had the beginnings of something really great, and could even have worked with the novel just being about one timeline as opposed to both - but it felt like trying to do both just weakened both. (I said both a lot in there) But back to the research aspect - did anybody else know about the SS Californian and it’s connection to the sinking of the Titanic or am I somehow the last 90s kid obsessed with shipwrecks to have come across this information?? AND/OR the SS Mount Temple?!?! Seriously we’ve got teachers trying to explain the Pythagorean Theorem to me when they COULD have been teaching me about an early 19th century Canadian cargo ship that sank over the Atlantic crossing during war service with DINOSAUR FOSSILS aboard?!?!?! anywho… worth a shot if you’re into shipwrecks and lighthouses and treasure hunting.
The Second Mrs Astor by Shana Abé. I don't like reading biographies but I do enjoy novels based on real people. This one came up as suggested reading and was 99p on Kindle so I snapped it up and I'm glad I did. The writing was beautiful and poetic. At times it was like looking at a series of watercolours. The author gives descriptions which are sensual and bursting with colours which reflect the scene she is describing. There is a lot of flower imagery as befits the themes of flowers, blossoming courtship and death. The story is narrated by two points of view, one being the second Mrs Astor herself, Madeline Astor née Force. If you know who she is, then you know that this story doesn't end well. It's a beautiful, sad and harrowing account of a young woman, who had the attention of, and married John Jacob Astor IV. We see how she experiences relentless breeches of her privacy which, due to the unfortunate events, never leave her.
