Dekasana (Airplane pose) is a standing balance pose that is related to Virabhadrasana 3 (Warrior 3), but differs in that the arms are reaching back towards the legs. This pose strengths the legs, hips and core while also improving balance. Next time you’re in Warrior 3, you might like to try this variation, or place your arms at heart centre as another option. Virabhadrasana III - Warrior 3 Never an excuse to do what you truly love ✨ I personally love balancing postures as they help to align yourself and not only have a very important and positive impact in our physical body but in our mental health as well. When we want to balance, we need to find calm and focus to achieve these postures with harmony because when you perform it you literally have to align your body’s center of gravity with the earth’s gravitational field, so if you loose the focus because of a thought, emotions or any other distraction you might change your drishti (focused point) for a second and that can make you fall. Lack of equilibrium can bring frustration, touching closely your ego so keep practicing and patiently trying over and over again. Warrior II Yoga Posture: A regular to most Yoga flows, Warrior 2 is a pose that strengthens your body, opens your hips and makes you feel strong and grounded. You can begin from downward facing dog, lifting your leg up and carrying your leg over to place your foot in between your hands. Your front foot is facing forward and your back foot is at a 90° angle, heel grounded. Your front knee is bent and aligned with your ankle. Your back leg is straight, and you are pushing down the outer edge of your back foot for stability, balancing your weight equally between both feet. Lengthen your torso and engage your core by bringing the belly button in towards your spine. Arms and hands are strong and aligned with your legs. Relax the shoulders and neck, and keep your gaze forward. Enjoy at least 2-5 breaths here. For a challenge, you could try closing the eyes. Warrior III Yoga Posture: This is a difficult pose, requiring balance, concentration, and strength. You can enter Warrior 3 from an equal standing position: bring your hands in Anjali mudra (prayer shape) in front of your heart centre, engage your core by bringing the belly button in towards your spine, and with control start bringing your torso forwards and lifting your back leg up. You are aiming for a T shape, so torso and back leg parallel to the ground, hips square. Remember here to keep your core well engaged, very important for the stability of any balancing posture. Your leg on the floor can be bent to start with and maybe as you feel stable you can gently straighten it. ~Balancing Poses~ These postures can help with our stabilisation. As we ground down through the earth we engage through our feet strengthening the arches and creating a sense of strength and stability throughout the entire body. Virabhadrasana 3 (Warrior 3 Pose) In Five Steps: 1. First, start with the Mountain Pose or Tadasana. On an exhalation, step back with left foot to Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I). Arms by sides, palms facing each other, spread fingers, energize hands and arms. 2. Lower abs firm in and up as the torso lowers toward the front thigh. Head aligned with the spine, shoulders soften away from ears. 3. Ground through right (front) foot, right leg lengthens, left (back) leg elevates. Align hip, knee, and ankle in both legs. Hips and inner thighs are firm toward each other. Arms, torso, and elevated leg yearn toward parallel with the floor. 4. Flex the elevated foot, toes point downward, and press through the heel. Hip points level and pointing toward the mat. Breath is steady, legs, abdominals, and arms energized and engaged, soften tops of shoulders away from ears. 5. To come out of the pose, on an exhalation lower left (back) foot to Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I), use the abdominal muscles to mindfully step back to Mountain (Tadasana) at top of the mat, prepare for the second side. After doing it on the right side, do all these steps also on the left side. Folded, or “Flat” Chair Part 2 While my left arm is regaining strength, I’m posting a series of posts of photos and stills from short videos on flat-chair use that I made 2 years ago. Post 2 Some Standing Poses, chair at hip crease for support and especially to encourage spaciousness and length of spine. This spaciousness serves not only the musculoskeletal system but the organic and nervous systems as well. Proprioceptive tools and support bring stability and calm. The rolled yoga mat serves to brace the chair in case the mat offers insufficient traction. 1 Ardha Chandrasana / Half Moon 2 Warrior 3 / Virabhdrasana Three (leg a little low) 3 Standing Forward Bend / Uttanasana with released back 4-5 Revolved Triangle /Parivrtta Trikonasana with chair at hip crease for length and pelvic position and at side with arm hooked over top of chair for support and rotation. Can you believe it’s already mid April? Here’s your reminder to check in with your yearly intentions! 🌼 My focus has so far this year has mostly been splits, cow face pose, handstand and pincha. Swipe for a peak at my practice! 😅 The biggest things that has shifted so far in my handstand and pincha journey are these: - I’m not as scared anymore when I practice. - I’m starting to feel way stronger and more stable in my arms, hands and shoulders. - I’m can now do shorter forearm stand holds with support of the wall (without leaning against the wall). - I’m starting to understand the alignment and how weightless the sweet spot feels when you catch balance. Sure, I still don’t like to fall (and I avoid it at all costs hehe) or to practice these things in a crowded room (because I’m scared to fall on other people haha). But I’m not scared of at least trying to catch a bit more air in both of those poses even if the class is full. And I am acutally starting to hover, and I’m so happy for it! My outer hips are starting to get a bit more spacious day by day for cow legs. And I’ve been continuing to deepen my front splits. So I’m very happy with how things are going. Of course there are some poses that I haven’t been focusing on that much.. Like working on Bird of Paradise and side plank variations. But the year is long so I’m sure I’ll get to that at some point Wherever you are with your yearly intentions, try to remember to not strive for perfection. Strive for progress (whilst remembering that it’s not always linear). I meet someone this weekend who complimented me on my ASL interpreting at Mass. I responded thanks and that I’m still learning. She responded in surprise, “You’re still learning!?!” It’s true that life is a journey of continuous learning. As a yoga teacher, we often focus solely on teaching and creating classes for our students. There’s such joy and creativity in doing that! We have to be reminded to also take time to practice for ourselves, especially when we miss being a student. Honestly, being a student allows us to glean from our teachers and helps us be better teachers ourselves. The only challenge is allowing yourself to let go, to be present in the moment, and to not be counting the seconds of Savasana. Explore. Connect. Learn. Experience.
