📖Book Review ~ If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin 📚 This was my first James Baldwin, and it will certainly not be my last. The writing here demanded that I read this slowly and savour it, but it was initially started in March for the #readgoodchallenge and continued into April. This short novel follows Tish and her relationship with Fonny. The love they feel for each other is clear, but Fonny is in prison for a crime he did not commit, and Tish has her own worries as well as trying to get him out. The injustice was palpable on the page. I could see why Baldwin is such a well loved writer. The themes here are strong, but so are the characters. I really believed in Tish and Fonny and their respective families. This is a quietly heartbreaking story of racial injustice and how it affects individuals and families. Yet, the key to my salvation, which cannot save my body, is hidden in my flesh.// I finally met James Baldwin a couple weeks ago. I first listened to If Beale Street Could Talk, narrated (well!) by Bahni Turpin. It left me with mixed feelings: I was in turned weary of its naive voice and appreciative of its clarity, the careful laying out of everything that passes in the heart and mind of the narrator. In the end, it was too theatrical for my taste, I knew already the ambiguous ending with its fragile, tame and bruised hope and I didn’t have it in me to carry on with this bleak, dramatic tale. So I left it unfinished at the 86% mark. But there was something in the writing, that made me want to try something else by him. Enter…Giovanni’s room. And wow. I wanted to highlight every sentence. It’s a slim novel that probes the depths of a man’s soul. Love, agony, self-deceit. It’s rich, and sticky. Like honey and blood. Suave, laced with the poison of lies and self-loathing, but never overpowering. A balancing act, honest, empathetic, never overdone. Masterful. I love this movie so much. I’m still pissed it wasn’t nominated for best picture and best director at the Academy Awards, especially in a year that awarded Green Book as the best of the year. I mean... come on! No one does close ups like Barry Jenkins. The way that he shoots emotion on screen is absolutely mesmerizing to watch. He works silence and reactions in a very powerful way, making us dive into his characters’ inner lives. It’s impossible not to be affected by his work. If Beale Street Could Talk is a beautiful film from start to end, with such a gifted cast. Everyone is at the top of their game here, especially Regina King, absolutely wonderful in her supporting turn, and Brian Tyree Henry has just the most fantastic scene. Love love love this film.

If Beale street could talk is a heartbreaking story of how a young black man is accused of rape, due to the colour of his skin, those charges stay and his got to serve prison time. While his girlfriend is pregnant, she and her family try to fight for justice but the accuser just did what she was told. The way it plays out is it interweaves past with present and narration of a young woman whose trying to understand why this is happening to a man who couldn't even hurt a fly. #ifbealestreetcouldtalk

If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin Synopsis: The story is told through the eyes of nineteen year old Tish, who is in love with Fonny (the father of her unborn child and a sculptor). Though the young couple are in love, there is trouble in paradise as Fonny is in prison accused of a crime he hasn't committed. Both his and Tish's family work to clear his name, especially as he has a baby on the way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This book was interesting for different reasons. For one, it felt as though Tish was having a long conversation with someone, where she would talk about her love for Fonny, how they came to be, issues with their families and wanting to get her man out. As for Fonny..hmmm.. there was one comment he made about Tish, which I thought seemed rude and made me question if he was sincere or not.🤔 Despite their struggles, Tish stood by him, her family (Mum, Dad, and sister) also stood by her and wanted to help get Fonny out. Them raising money for a lawyer showed how much they cared. Fonny's family, on the other hand, were questionable. His dad was one individual, who throughout the story, I wasn't a fan of. I won't say too much on him. When I reached the end of the story, I wasn't expecting it. It left me with some unanswered questions. The story touches on: racism, prejudice, justice and love.
