New drop in the Substack. 🔗 in bio In the Ag industry, there seems to be a loophole between food meant for human consumption and fertilizer meant to grow food. That’s true in the structure of the regulations (USDA vs. CDFA) and also in the perception of how fertilizer is used. I know from 15 years of urban farming and home garden consulting, that fertilizer can often be on plants. And for organic gardeners like me, as well as the hundreds of kids I have taught gardening to, the ultimate indulgence is eating produce right off the vine. So my assumption is that organic vegetable garden fertilizer should be safe if ingested by humans in small amounts. But that’s certainly not the standard. In fact, I struggle to find any standards. As far as I can tell, after the animals are trucked to the renderer, it is the renderer’s responsibility to make sure the materials are properly distributed based on certain protocols. But it’s murky how accountable the renderers are. That makes we wonder when they cull these infected herds or flocks and the animals are sent to the renderer…is someone really watching that those infected animals don’t end up in fertilizer? Or are they allowed in fertilizer? I can’t say for sure. And that’s no ok with me. Read more in my newsletter on Substack. Argh! Now here is something a dahlia grower never hopes to see. The big bump on this dahlia tuber is crown gall: a bacterial infection that will damage the health and productivity of this plant, and that may spread to my other dahlias if I plant this tuber. Of course, I won’t plant it: into the garbage it goes, along with the other tubers in the same bag, and I’ll Lysol the heck out of everything it touched. Crown gall (and its even-uglier stepsister, leafy gall) is pretty rampant in dahlia tubers bought from places like Wal-Mart, Costco, and Eden Brothers, which import their tubers from the Netherlands. But any tuber can be infected. I got this one from a US-based small grower whom I *know* to be extremely careful; I’m sure the bump wasn’t there when she mailed me this tuber last month. That’s why - now that it’s almost planting time here in the Boston suburbs - you’ll want to inspect all your dahlia tubers before you plant them. Lots of folks are trying out dahlias for the first time this year, and I’m thrilled about that! Dahlias are amazing plants, but they come with a *lot* of health issues (unfortunately, they get viruses too!) and they need super-careful treatment. I’m planning to do a series of posts on them in the coming months - but for now, the American Dahlia Society is a great resource for info on gall, viruses, and best handling practices. Check them out - and look over your tubers for weird bumps and growths before you plant them in your garden! If you see an out-of-place bump like this one - or a bunch of fused-together shoots coming out of one tuber, which is symptomatic of leafy gall - throw that tuber in the garbage (not the compost) and sterilize everything that touched it. 👍Tips for planting Zucchini : 1. Choose the Right Location: Zucchini plants thrive in full sun and well-draining soil. Select a location in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter and has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. 2. Timing: Zucchini seeds can be directly sown into the garden once the soil has warmed up and all danger of frost has passed. This is typically around 2-3 weeks after the last expected frost date. Planting too early in cold soil can lead to poor germination and stunted growth. 3. Sow Seeds Properly: Plant zucchini seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in the soil. Space the seeds 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) apart in rows or hills. If planting in rows, space the rows 3-5 feet (90-150 cm) apart. If planting in hills, place 3-4 seeds per hill and space the hills 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) apart. 4. Provide Adequate Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the germination and early growth stages. Once the plants are established, water deeply but less frequently, allowing the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overhead watering, as this can lead to powdery mildew and other fungal diseases. ❤️ Spring rhubarb ❤️ It was high time for these old rhubarb plants to be split and transplanted! They had outgrown their space and desperately needed to be moved into the bigger garden. This is an old homestead variety that has flourished over the past 8 years! A few days ago I dug them up and transplanted them in a new spot… and then it snowed! The results of my first turkey hatch were quite disappointing to say the least. I had 10 good eggs on Wednesday. I locked them down on Thursday. Three hatched on Friday, overnight into Saturday, and the rest all died. One egg was completely unzipped, but the baby never came out. One was pipped, and the rest didn't even try. All were fully developed. In our last post. We shared a picture of Queen cells from one of our hives and talked about honey bee swarming behavior. Here is a picture of a honey bee swarm. We are not big swarm collectors. Our goal is to prevent them from happening with our bee colonies. In an odd twist of fate, we have had multiple swarms from other beeyards move into our spare hive boxes that are stored at a location away from our bee yards. When we gain a colony of bees through a swarm, we are excited to have an additional colony with a mated Queen. But we are careful observers of the new colony to be sure they are not harboring, pests or disease that might impact our other colonies. As the old Farm saying goes, a swarm in May is worth a load of hay, a swarm in June is worth a silver spoon, but a swarm in July ain't worth a fly. At current hay prices this is quite a statement. Why do you think the value of a swarm goes down later in the season?

Hallo, das bin ich, Sophie Kleinschuster, boss of hof 117 😜 und das Foto ist bereits vor zwei Jahren entstanden, auf einem der schönen Veranstaltungen an denen ich immer wieder teilnehme. Wir befinden uns wieder mitten in der Marktsaison- juhu! 🌸 Auf einem kleinen Bauernhof im Südburgenland, auf dem ich aufgewachsen bin, lebe ich sozusagen meinen Traum: Blumenbäuerin sein. Ok, es ist nicht immer leicht, es ist harte körperliche Arbeit und ab April sind die Tage viel zu lang und gleichzeitig viel zu kurz. Aber: ich liebe es! Es gibt nichts was mich mehr glücklich macht als in der Erde zu wühlen, Blumen zu ernten, Sträuße zu binden, und Eure Wünsche zu erfüllen. Und gleichzeitig auch noch vielen vielen Lebewesen im Garten schönen Lebensraum zu bieten und etwas Gutes für unsere Umwelt zu tun 🥰 Unsere Blumen und anderen Pflänzchen werden in Handarbeit vorgezogen, gepflanzt, geerntet und verarbeitet. Alles streng biologisch und auch zertifiziert. Wir leben und arbeiten mit den Jahreszeiten und den Launen der Natur. Unsere Blumen sind gesund und glücklich! 🌱 Blumen, Kränze und alles andere was uns immer so einfällt, bekommt ihr auf ein paar ausgewählten Märkten, auf Bestellung oder nach Terminvereinbarung direkt in der Blumenwerkstatt bei uns am hof 117. Es gibt immer wieder Workshops, und den Blumenschmuck für Eure Feiern und Feste kreiere ich auch sehr gerne. 🌺 Und warum sag ich immer auch „uns“ und „wir“? Weil ich das natürlich nicht ganz alleine mache. Taste this beloved tomme during your next visit to our Boonville tasting room or find it and its variations in The Corners Sampler. __ We release wheels of Boont Corners at three different ages. Typically we sell the Two Month designate from 2-4 months, Vintage from 5-7 months, and Reserve is aged 8+ months. In the creamery, we test the fat and protein of the milk each day to determine how long a batch of Boont Corners will be aged. The 5-month wait for a batch of Vintage is well worth it, with the cheese developing richness of flavor and sharp notes.

Field updates: the asparagus keeps on producing. It is interplanted with peonies that are budding and some nigella mixed in there. I’m always continuing to add to these perennial beds to make them more productive all season long. I’m behind on most of my annuals this year, but overwintered dahlias in the field and have finally uncovered the leaves…and they made it!
