I devoured it in basically one sitting. I decided to read the first in the series, The Dog Sitter Detective, before starting the sequel but I don’t think you need to in order to enjoy the book. If you’ve been feeling a bit bereft after finishing The Thursday Murder Club then this might just be the book to soothe you. It’s got everything I want from cozy crime and having the dogs play such a central role was marvellous. There’s even a black lab called Ronnie who’s antics remind me very much of our boy Wilbur 😂 The leading lady Gwinny was so easy to get behind and I’d like to think I’ll have her positive attitude when I’m older. The slow burn romance between her and ex-DCI Birch is a lovely addition to the book that gives their relationship more depth than simply friends solving crime. For a change I didn’t predict who the killer was, and judging by the last photo neither did Wilbur! A wholesome lighthearted mystery, perfect for this time of year. Purtroppo, ha ereditato solo quello: la situazione finanziaria, infatti, è tutt’altro che rosea e a 60 anni deve rimettersi in gioco e cercare un lavoro. Una circostanza che abbatterebbe chiunque, ma Guinevere Johanna Frida Anya Mathilde Tuffel, meglio conosciuta come Gwinny, non è una tipa qualunque: schietta, curiosa, arguta e pronta a tutto per salvare le persone (e i quadrupedi) a cui vuole bene. Ne sa qualcosa Tina Chapel, la sua migliore amica, che viene accusata di aver ucciso il suo promesso sposo, un magnate sanmarinese dell’olio di oliva, trovato cadavere nella biblioteca della villa di campagna di Tina pochi minuti prima delle nozze. LEITURAS DE OUTUBRO Apesar de uma queda no ritmo, li obras muito boas e relevantes esse mês também. O destaque principal vai para o encadernado das 10 edições de Fashion Beast, que por sua vez é uma adaptação de um roteiro para um filme para cinema escrito por Alan Moore (que nunca foi realizado). A história por trás disso é muito louca, pois o conceito foi criado pelo lendário empresário dos Sex Pistols (!), Malcolm McLaren, que foi atrás de Moore lá nos anos 80 para escrever o roteiro dessa ideia maluca que teve para um filme. O próprio encadernado aqui tem um extenso prefácio do Alan Moore contando tudo isso com muitos detalhes interessantes. Eu adquiri esse material há 9 anos atrás e só fui ler esse mês. Que grande vacilo o meu, demorar tantos anos para apreciar um trabalho que agora considero um dos mais legais e inusitados que li nos últimos tempos. Recomendo fortemente. The Dog Sitter Detective is a properly cosy crime novel, with a country house, an amateur detective and a cast of larger than life suspects. The dog sitter in the title is Gwen Tuffel, a sixty-something actress who decides to turn sleuth after her friend, Tina, is arrested on suspicion of murder. It's got the usual blundering police officers, including the slightly odd DS Khan who seems to have a curious anecdote for every situation, as well as potential blackmail, fraud and lots of clues to unravel. Oh yes, and there's also a bizarre number of references to the dogs' toilet habits. Light and fun- a bit like a cross between Rosemary and Thyme and The Marlow Murder Club. Today's TPB reading was Alan Moore's The Courtyard by Alan Moore, Anthony Johnston, and Jacen Burrows. This opens the Neonomicon trade in the first image, with Neonomicon being the sequel to The Courtyard. The Courtyard is a quick 2 issue story, following an undercover FBI agent investigating 3 seemingly unrelated ritual murders around America. He follows the abstract leads he picks up and quickly discovers that he may not be able to handle the reality of the situation. Its quick, tense, and eerie. Is essentially Moore's take, or addition to, the Cthullu mythos. Compelling enough to have me very excited for the Neonomicon and Providence follow-ups. As usual, Moore and Burrows do not disappointed with their writing and art respectively. The grimey, sometimes tragic, depravity of humans is on clear display, as Moore does not pull his punches with characters letting their bigotry, unacceptance, and fears control them. 📘📘BOOK REVIEW 📘📘 The Dog Sitter Detectives by Anthony Johnston The first in a new cosy crime series and it was a delightful read. Featuring Gwinny, a former actress who retired ten years ago to look after her father. However when her father dies she is shocked to find that he was virtually destitute and she needs to find some way to earn money, and soon. Written in a lovely easy read style from Gwinny’s perspective I finished this in one sitting. Briefly, attending her best friend Tina’s wedding Gwinny is outside in the gardens when there is a terrible scream and barking, very loud barking, and Tina is found next to her husband-to-be’s dead body. Tina is arrested and Gwinny is left to look after two Saluki dogs given to Tina as a wedding present. Determined to prove her friend’s innocence Gwinny, along with a retired police officer, launches her own investigation! I see a book with dogs or cats, and I’m there! As well as the salukis, there’s also a black labrador which just so happens to be my favourite breed of dog. Result! Gwinny was a lovely character and one you can see growing with each book, a younger version of Miss Marple with dogs, what’s not to like. It’s a stylish action spy-thriller with a great soundtrack that reflects the #1989 time period in which the story is set, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. #CharlizeTheron’s performance, once again stating she’s not to be f’ed with, and the action set pieces is the most interesting part of the film, as the plot isn’t particularly engaging—but it works perfectly as a framework for the stylish and hard hitting action. DAREDEVIL: THE DEVIL’S HAND I just ran ‘The Devil’s Hand’ over at @MarvelComicsGuide as I get ready to cover the ‘Shadowland’ event. Admittedly, I didn’t have the fondest memories of this story arc, but there was a fair amount of negativity surrounding it at the time as the Brubaker run before it had just been SO good to the point of it being impossiblr to live up to. Plus, we’re clearly building to a major crossover here, which is something Daredevil has deftly avoided for several years. But, with all the anti-hype gone, is Andy Diggle’s Daredevil really all that bad? Well, I preferred it this time around. It was way better than I remembered and it continues the threads set up by Brubaker with Matt proving himself worthy of leading the Hand and going against the plans he’d made with Master Izo as he tries to transform the ninja death cult into a force for justice. The art suits the title, especially Marco Checcetto, setting a familiar tone. Is it on a par with Brubaker or Bendis? No. It’s good stuff, especially the ‘Dark Reign - The List’ opener, but it doesn’t feel as groundbreaking as those past runs. Comic Review: Daredevil Season One (no relation to the tv series!) Written by Anthony Johnston Art by Wellington Alves, Nelson Pereira and Bruno Hang Cover Art by Julian Totino Tedesco I found this interesting curiosity on sale in the comic shop. Like the other books in the ‘Season One’ line produced by Marvel 10 years ago, the purpose of this book is to summarise the early adventures of a classic hero I a way that is friendly to new readers. What makes this particular book interesting is the decision to focus on reimagining the original 1960’s version of Daredevil (in other words, the version that was less successful than the 1980’s revival. As such, many of the more iconic elements associated with the character are not present here - for example, he is wearing the original yellow suit throughout rather than the red. Iconic villains from later DD stories such as Kingpin and Bullseye are also missing, replaced instead by more colourful rogues such as the Matador and Mr Fear. Whilst not everybody’s cup of tea, I did enjoy this as a somewhat different take on DD, which manages to balance the Lawyer by day/ Vigilante by night duality quite well by presenting a legal thriller mystery weaved in alongside the superhero action. Just don’t expect anything too groundbreaking. I’d recommend this to anyone who fancies experiencing early Daredevil, but doesn’t want to fork out loads of money on lots of 1960’s comic reprints.
