Got the proper sads today, so I’ve sat in front of the Snooker and finished #The8MansionMurders by # TakemaruAbiko - it’s exceptional. As with most #Honkaku it combines those classic #LockedRoom and #ImpossibleCrime elements with those unique twists on Architecture that give each book a unique flavour and a clever psychological element. Thrown in here is also some very good humerus moments. This is up there with Shimada’s Crooked House and Ayatsuji’s Decagon House and Mill House murders. My verdict ploughed through it. this weekend, highly recommended #Boom #Reading #Bookstagram #DetectiveFiction #JapaneseDetectiveFiction

📚Peril at End House by Agatha Christie📚 We’re in the 1930s for #readchristie2024 and for my April read I chose another Hercule Poirot mystery, Peril at End House. Once I got past the rather startling cover of my Pan paperback edition, I thoroughly enjoyed the neatly plotted puzzle. Whilst the body is unexpected and rather late in the day, the English coastal setting, costumes, uncertain identities and slight gullibility of Captain Hastings are comfortingly familiar. There is plenty to exercise Poirot’s little grey cells amidst the glamour and melodrama, and the solution is rather cunningly clever. Whilst it isn’t my favourite Poirot mystery, this is one of her stronger puzzles, and maybe one that is often underrated. It’s time for a Bank Holiday #murdereverymonday ! The theme set by @armchair_sleuth1920 this week is books with the word “secret” in the title. The two Agathas were obvious choices and I then found a BLCC on the shelf, but overall there were fewer books than I expected which met the requirements. Tbh I’m not entirely sure that “The Secret History” counts, but it’s got murder and secrets in it, so I’m including it anyway! I’m also slightly ashamed to admit that I’ve also never read it all the way through. I started reading it over 20 years ago when I first heard about it as a (slightly less bloodthirsty) Classics undergrad student, but at the time I was pretty much exclusively reading fantasy and the classics, and spending most of the rest of my time either pulling all-nighters and frantically writing essays which were due in the next day, translating endless passages of Greek and Latin, and letting off steam by stabbing people in the fencing club (legitimate bloodthirstiness!) and spending a lot of time building up a slightly scary tolerance for strong spirits at the student union bar. It’s never quite seemed like the right time to attempt it again since, but I’ve held onto my copy through various house moves and associated culling of possessions. I’m managing to read far more widely this year than I have probably since I was that fresh-faced curious undergraduate, so it’s going to stay out on the sideboard with the immediate priority TBR books, rather than being buried in relative obscurity in its previous home, and hopefully I’ll get around to reading it soon(ish). #nationalmysterymonth I've been a mystery buff for as long as I can remember and all those like me would agree that transitioning from a favorite mystery writer's books to a new writer's work is a path strewn with trepidation. Even more, when the format is quite unlike anything you've ever come across. But if you, like me, like to venture a little outside your comfort zone from time to time, here's presenting 'The Appeal' by British journalist, screenwriter and author, Janice Hallett. Special props if you're one of those who enjoy trying their hand at solving mysteries along the way. Swipe to read the full review.👉🏼 My copy of 'The Appeal' is from @luna_thebookstore 🌻 If you liked this review, do 'like' this review and let me know if this was a YAY🙌🏼 for you or a NAY.👎🏼 If this is something you'd want to add to your TBR, do save this post. I wouldn't rely too much on memory if I were you!🧐 And if this is not your cup of tea, share it with someone you think will enjoy! It always feels nice to show people that you care.🙂‍↕️ If you have similar suggestions for me, let me know in the comments below! 1st appearance anywhere, in any format of “The Glass Key” serialized in four issues of Black Mask Magazine. This was Hammett’s 4th novel to be serialized in Black Mask, all of them precede the book editions. Even issues of Black Mask without significant stories in them are scarce because of the generally fragile nature of the paper (acidic paper gets brittle and crumbles), the pulp collector completists who buy any issue they see and relatively low publication numbers in the early days. The Hammett novels in Black Mask are the most significant and sought after, so any complete novel in the individual issues is scarce, in this condition they are rare. By the publication of “The Glass Key”, Hammett had written 3 novels, mastered the terse, tight, hard boiled, vernacular prose, of his impeccable, realist style, used it to set his completely original scenes, depict his indelibly believable characters, and put on their lips, a sharp, raw dialogue that punctuated his relentlessly grounded plotlines. By 1930, he was successful enough, experienced enough, and proud enough, to warily ponder what he would write next. He knew that popularity was glory’s small change, so he opted for risk, and a novel that wasn’t anchored by a professional detective, and wasn’t even, technically, a murder mystery, but rather a novel about political corruption, and devotion to a friend, that happened to have a mysterious murder in it. What he fashioned was The Glass Key, and he always called it, his favorite, but having no detective to identify with, some of his readers were uneasy then, and some are still so today, because they come to Hammett’s novels with their preconceived expectations, and find this one different. Other readers agree with Hammett, and it seems the arc for The Glass Key is a rising one, and anyway, one of the characteristic noises in literature, is the tedious sound, of narrowly focused fans, barking up the wrong tree. #hammett #detectivenovel #pulp #detectivefiction #serialization #periodical #rarebooksofinstagram #rarebooks #literature

Author: Simon McCleave Publisher: Stamford Publishing 2019 Pages: 368 Purchased: Pre-loved, Charity Shop Genre: Crime Simon McCleave was one of the original names on my ‘authors of interest’ list. The Snowdonia Killings is the first book in the DI Ruth Hunter Crime Thriller series. Nearly fifty, DI Ruth Hunter has left the madness of The Met in London, for rural Snowdonia, Wales. Still wrestling with the mysterious disappearance & memories of her partner, on day one in North Wales Police, a brutally murdered woman is discovered & Ruth is appointed SIO A second murder within a day; Symbols carved into the victims hands; Relationships to build with her new team; Doubts as to whether they are good enough; Suspects at every turn; An addicted deputy; The threat of loosing the case to the ‘city big boys’. There are plenty of twists & turns, dead ends along with false trails which keeps you engaged with the storyline. I enjoyed Simon’s descriptions of the mountains of Snowdonia & the way he includes them as part of the story. The tight knit Welsh community also plays its part as they close ranks. Ruth Hunters backstory & Nick Evans alcoholism become a very strong thread within this book & gives a reality to their relationship. I know Simon McCleave’s sold millions of books but this is my first reading of a gripping debut novel, what a start. On to DI Hunters second outing… Recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @simonmccleaverauthor @stamfordpublishing #book #books #booksbooksbooks #bookblogger #bookbloggeruk #booklover #bookstergram #bookstergramuk #bookstergrammer #bookstergrammeruk #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecommendations #bookshelf #bookworm #bookcommunity #crime #crimefictionlover #crimenovel #crimethriller #detective #detectivethriller #detectivefiction

Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte is the leading character in a series of some 29 detective novels published by Australian author Arthur Upfield between 1929 and 1966. Bonaparte is the son of an Aborigine mother and a white father, born at a time when interracial relationships were illegal. Orphaned as an infant, he was raised in a Catholic orphanage where he acquired his name and developed his crime-solving intellect which, when combined with his superior tracking skills, made him a formidable detective inspector with the Queensland Police after earning a university degree. The Bony books continue to be popular in Australia and abroad, and American author Tony Hillerman cited them as influences on his popular Leaphorn and Chee series. The books have been adapted for Australian radio and television numerous times, although they are sometimes criticized for being politically incorrect and reflective of the time in which they were written, and, so far, Bony has not been portrayed by an actor of Aboriginal descent. Upfield was born in England in 1890, migrated to Australia and served in the Australian military during World War I. After the war, he traveled extensively in Australia and became very familiar with Aboriginal culture and participated in numerous scientific expeditions. During his travels, Upfield claimed that he met a mixed race man known as "Tracker Leon" who worked for the Queensland police and became the inspiration for Bonaparte, but there is apparently no evidence that such a man existed. Upfield wrote other novels, but they were overshadowed by Bony's popularity. Upfield died in New South Wales in 1964. #histocratsrabbithole #rabbithole #downtherabbithole #histocrats #australia #detectivefiction #crimenovels #bonybonaparte

Make sure to preorder Dark Intent on Amazon! Release date is August 20th! This one is INTENSE! Here’s a little clue about what’s coming. (Unedited version, by the way!) If you asked a realtor, they’d sell you Hamby, Georgia, as the kind of place Norman Rockwell might’ve dreamed up if he’d taken a detour down South—quaint, equestrian, brimming with boutiques that didn’t know the meaning of chain store and restaurants where the chefs actually knew your name. They’d wax poetic about the farmer’s market, a Saturday morning ritual where the tomatoes taste like tomatoes and the crafts have more hands behind them than a preschool finger-painting class. It was the kind of town where the schools were good, the churches plentiful, and small-town feel wasn’t just a phrase—it was the law. But peel back the postcard, and the Hamby Police Department, my employer, would tell you a different story. Sure, on the surface, it was all apple pies and handshakes, but they knew the shadows between the sunshine, the secrets tucked away in those over-twelve churches, and the whispers behind the friendly good mornings. In Hamby, even the skeletons in the closet had their own closets, and the HPD held the key to more than a few of those doors. This is the sixth of the very successful Shardlake series by C J Samson. It's been on my shelves for a few years, so definitely #tbr24in24 and as I really enjoyed the first four, also #neglectedfaithful However, do you sometimes find a series tails off somewhat after a few volumes? The historical details of life in 1546, the last year of Henry VIII's turbulent reign are fascinating. A time when long held beliefs and behaviours, both deeply meaningful convictions or followed for the expedience of staying alive, could suddenly get you burned alive, or sixth months later, held as a model citizen. The King who at least in his own mind was by now the representative of God in his Kingdom - and the arbiter of life or death, was also petulant and capricious. Around him, the 'great ones' politiked viciously for control the likely regency after his death. It was a dangerous time, and continued so, for many more years and rulers. Unfortunately, for me though, the plotline of this one - and I now recall its predecessor Heartstone, didn't stand up, especially to sustain 615 pages. It's a detective story and it didn't need that amount to solve it. Moreover, and without any spoilers, I didn't really find the ending credible. I believe the first one has now been made into a TV series which has just started - and it could well be worth a watch. I don't have the network that is showing it. Have you read any CJ Sansom? He's written a couple of other books which aren't part of this series too. Do you have a favourite series that has continued to delight throughout? #shardlake #detectivefiction #historicalfiction #lamentation #tudors #catherineparr #readingforpleasure #lovereading #lovebooks

The #readchristie2024 book for May is The ABC Murders which features a serial killer on the loose who is working his way through the alphabet to pick his victims and their location. So with that plot in mind, our classic crime book of the month is The Z Murders by J. #bookreview Island of the Mad (Sherlock and Russell, book 15) by Laurie R King. Without a shadow of a doubt, this series is my go-to when I need a book I know I will love. Every single book, I’m comfortable with all the characters (bonus points for Sherlock and Russell working together a lot in this story), I’m interested in the mystery and I’m sated by the descriptions of the settings (this time, we had ‘Bedlam’ and Venice). In another dimension, King is writing the best holiday and travel brochures because she brings places alive so vividly. I’m glad I’m existing in her fiction-writing dimension though. #book #books #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammer #booklife #booklove #bookaddict #bookstaexplore #readersofinstagram #readersofinsta #readersofig #readergram #readersgonnaread #readerlife #sherlock #sherlockandrussell #maryrussell #sherlockedit #islandofthemad #laurierking #detectivefiction #murdermystery #mysterybooks #bookssetinvenice

'THE RUNNING GRAVE' by @robertgalbraith ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An intense, epic thriller that takes us into the dark heart of a cult. The Strike and Ellacott Detective Agency is approached by a father whose son has joined a religious group and is now entirely estranged from his family. With the reclusive Universal Humanitarian Church impenetrable by outsiders, Robin goes undercover to join the cult and ultimately takes residence at their headquarters of Chapman Farm in the Norfolk countryside. Working from outside and within, Strike and Robin uncover the sinister nature of the UHC and a history of criminal activity, abuse and mysterious deaths. 'The Running Grave' is the seventh novel in the Strike series by Robert Galbraith, pseudonym for JK Rowling in writing the detective series following the lives and investigations of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott. Unlike any case they’ve pursued in the past, their client wishes them to find a way to free his son from the clutches of a nefarious religious group. Rowling once again treats us to a complex, detailed and engrossing novel of epic proportions, hooking us from the very first page and not letting go until the very last, as Robin goes deep undercover in her most dangerous cover identity yet, isolated from Strike and the team. This continues to be one of my favourite crime fiction series, featuring many elements I love about the genre – intricate mystery, subtle gothic overtones, psychological and philosophical depth, and riveting and electric plotting, woven into a superbly written novel driven by distinctive characters. The Universal Humanitarian Church is richly developed, delving into its history and creation, its religious practices and mythology, having birthed from events that took place many years previously - all of which come under scrutiny, Strike investigating these circumstances as he would a cold case whilst Robin is undercover dealing directly with their primary objective. We experience the UHC’s insidious strategy of manipulation, coercive control and indoctrination... Read the rest of my review on my Goodreads blog; follow my LinkTree at the top of my profile.

“Speaking for myself, preferring, as I do, like the rest of mankind, to believe the worst of my fellow men, I felt that if he had not murdered his uncle, it was simply because he didn’t happen to think of it.” 📚🐍🔍 After a run of intense non-fiction, I decided to cleanse my literary palette with ‘Serpents in Eden’, a thoroughly entertaining anthology from the ‘British Library Crime Classics’ strand. Countryside criminals and rural ruffians abounded, and almost every tale in this collection was enjoyable in its own way, from the menacing to the mischievous. Even my least favourite entry, ‘Murder by Proxy’, had its merits - a great premise, but it really let itself down at the end with the cliched, contrived dialogue in the confession. G.K. Chesterton’s offering was a really slick piece of storytelling, but by far my favourite story from this selection was ‘Inquest’ by Leonora Wodehouse - a story as arch and playful as you’d expect from P.G. Wodehouse’s step daughter, but also positing quite the moral quandary - can murder ever be justified? Honestly, I’d recommend this book on the strength of ‘Inquest’ alone, but ‘Serpents in Eden’ is a real gem, with an enticing mystery for every armchair sleuth. 📚🐍

Looking for your next mystery read? Buy The Case of the Stolen Goddess now! 📖 Link in bio! Now famous after their previous quest to find Cleopatra’s tomb, detectives Flinders Petrie and Thomas Pettigrew begin their next adventure in search of a stolen statue of Aphrodite. Their pursuit takes them from the bowels of the British Museum to the barren desert of Syria and the glamorous bustle of Istanbul. Set against the backdrop of an oncoming war, this book is a window into the lush complexity of the Ottoman Empire, the stark life of the desert bedouin, and steadily vanishing societies. Our protagonists enter a world of beauty and barbarity to find an artifact but find the hauntings of memory and perhaps a strange peace as well. The action that drives this unpredictable narrative will leave you eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Petrie and Pettigrew series. Welsh detective Winter Meadows takes on a new murder case… Link in bio There were a lot of things you could call Stacey Evans. And many of them would be true. And unprintable. But the motives are many, and the only clue is a strange word left on Stacey’s body. DI Meadows struggles to pierce the secrecy surrounding the teenager’s busy love life. Was the killer one of her pursuers acting out of jealousy? Maybe someone’s wife seeking revenge? But as each suspect is excluded from the enquiry, and other markings turn up, Meadows is convinced that something more sinister is afoot. When another body is found, a veil of silence descends like a fog upon Gaer Fawr. What more will it take for the village to give up its secrets? . . . . . #Maydeals #springtime #springreads  #murdermysterybooks #mysterybooks  #crimefiction  #madeinwales  #wales  #detectivefiction  #welshcrimefiction  #crimeseries  #crimefictionseries  #crimenovel  #twisty  #welshartists  #instabookstagram  #instabooks  #bookstagram  #bookstagrammer  #bookstagramfeature  #bookstagramer  #bookstan  #bookstagramcommunity  #bookstagrammersunite

Detective Ruby Rivera is a vice-operative in the Los Angeles Police Department. She's bada*s, sassy, and has two things going for her: great legs and she's a great liar. Alejandro Gutierrez is her anti-hero, mob-boss sidekick who shoots first and asks questions later...maybe. Sometimes he just wants people to shut up. This series is a spin-off of the Darcy Walker Female Sleuth Thrillers. It's not necessary to read the Darcy Walker books if you want to dive into these darker, more edgier crimes. Spotlighting from book 11 to book 13 in the Detective Madison Knight Series. MURDER AT THE LAKE releases May 9th! Available now for pre-order from popular retailers! Book 11: GIRL ON THE RUN Detective Madison Knight shows up at the local train station in the aftermath of a fatal shooting, and finds two women killed on scene. One was expecting her first child. The other was a wife and mother of two children and has Madison seeing a ghost from her past. She’s convinced the woman is her missing college friend, but why would she change her identity? And where has she been all this time? There’s no lead on the gunman, but eyewitnesses tell of a mysterious young woman who may have triggered him. There’s no sign of her either—or another man who is said to watch over her all the time. As the investigation continues, a drug-trafficking ring is exposed with connections to the Russian Mafia. The girl is one of their runners, and the man shadowing her is one of their handlers. When he’s found murdered in his apartment, shot with bullets of the same caliber used in the train station shooting, Madison knows the Russians will retaliate. She also realizes the women weren’t killed in some random incident. As Madison works to figure out that piece of the puzzle, she’ll need to stay one step ahead of the mob to beat them to the elusive gunman and the girl. But when saving them puts her life and that of a loved one in danger, Madison finds out too late that the cost for justice comes at too high a price. #countdown #book11 #detectivefiction #DetectiveMadisonKnight #comingsoon #series #mystery #crimethriller #MurderattheLake

Stoked to get an early peek at the fourth Bernie Noel thriller from @joykluver 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I love Bernie and her team and this is packed with suspense, twists and compelling characters. Bernie is back from maternity leave and she doesn’t even make it to the station before she stumbles across a perplexing death with a sting in the tail… No spoilers but this is absolutely brilliant. Out in summer which gives you plenty of time to read books 1-3 if you don’t already know Bernie and the gang! #crimefiction #thriller #amreading #detectivefiction #books #writing #amreading #author #newthriller #authorlife #writingcommunity

Does anyone else feel crabbity when the book they finish turns out to be disappointing ? I read only for pleasure & even when the book is sad, I need to be enjoying it. I’m now, sooo tempted to only do re-reads & books I know I’ll love, for the rest of this year ! Ok, rant over, a dear friend came to my rescue & suggested the Simon Serrailler series by Susan Hill & so far, it looks very promising. This detective is also a painter in a small, cathedral town in the U.K. I already love the setting and I’m now back to being excited ….in the way that all book-lovers are when they discover a delicious series they can get cosy with. Detective Fiction is my go-to comfort read. I love a good, complicated, quirky detective. My forever-favourite is P.D. James’ Adam Dalgleish series. I’m also enjoying the Inspector Gamache series. I read them every once in a while, between books & in my hour of need - I know this is dramatic … but would love to know what everyone else does to get over a book they didn’t like ? . Self-control has never been my strong suit, but I’ve been trying hard not to finish them all greedily. Delighted to have found another series that I can count on like this cup of calming hibiscus tea. Suggestions for other such series would be much appreciated :) #Booksandtea #detectivefiction #cosyreads #readerlife #booklover #booksbooksbooks #simonserailler #susanhill

This is Pearl. She’s the Whiskerton half of my detective duo. She lives with her dad, Count Whiskerton, at Whiskerton Manor where Watts has come stay, and where mysterious goings-on begin to take place. Pearl is incredibly smart and she loves mysteries. Once she met Watts I realised that she was also a great cheerleader. She encourages him every step of the way until they crack the case together. I found an early sketch where Pearl began life as Penelope, but I think that lasted about a minute. In the earliest version of their adventures wool played a big part, and Pearl was given a knitting name (Purl) which also works really well as a cat name (Purr-l) and it stuck ever since. Scroll to see more from the book and the first sketch of Pearl. I’m glad I switched her costume to a little sailor suit. "Love surely should be a pleasurable emotion - not something that hurt you by its intensity." 🥀 "Anyone who has never really loved has never really lived." ✨️ Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie is another wonderful Poirot mystery. Elinor Carlisle stands accused of killing her rival in love- Mary Gerrard. The evidence is damning : only she had the motive and the opportunity. It is up to Hercule Poirot to prove her innocent- even when at first her thought her to be guilty. I did not expect at all how it turned out. The plot twist at the end came out of nowhere. I definitely recommend it. #agathachristiebooks #afathachristie #agathachristiefans #herculepoirot #detectivefiction #mystery #murder #qotd : have you read this book?

Jane Harper is one of my favourite crime thriller writers. Her novels are all set in Australia and the landscape is always described so evocatively that it almost functions as an additional character. The Dry, her first novel, is set during a severe drought which is causing severe difficulties for the small rural community. The Dry is the first of three books to feature detective Aaron Falk. Her other two books are standalone novels. All of her books are incredibly atmospheric and excellent stories with good plot twists and dealing with complex themes. I think my favourite is probably The Lost Man which isn’t actually included in this picture. But I’ve enjoyed all her books. #thrillerthursday #janeharper #thedry #aaronfalk #crimefiction #mysteryfiction #detectivefiction #booksandtea #teaandbooks #emmabridgewater #emmabridgewatermug #australianfiction #australia #bookish #lovebooks #reading #fiction #contemporaryfiction #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookrecs #bookrecommendations

• mini review • The tainted cup by Robert Jackson Bennett • 4.5 stars Fantasy mystery where an investigator and her assistant, helped by enhancing abilities, try to solve a series of strange murders, in an empire whose external walls are threatened by terrible leviathans. As a fan of the author’s previous Foundryside trilogy (though I still need to read book 3), I was looking forward to check out his newest work. As with his previous books, this fantasy mystery was a great read, with unique world building and very compelling characters, written in an evocative and smooth style. I loved how the world and magic portrayed is centred around plants, brews, poison, contagion and special enhancements. The mystery itself was really interesting and I loved seeing the characters intelligently putting the pieces together. It felt very much in the vein of a classic detective story like Sherlock Holmes but the fantasy setting and quirky characters made for an intriguing story. I loved the inclusion of queer characters, specifically in the mc as the author has done in his previous books. This was an incredible read and I’m really looking forward to read the next book in this series. #thetaintedcup #robertjacksonbennett #fantasy #mystery #sff #detectivefiction #bookstagram #bookreview #prettybooks #prettybookcover #bookworm #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookaddict
