At least that’s where the concept started, but she quickly turned into more of a run of the mill zombie. I’ll have to try again. I used to devour books. But in the last few years my focus hasn’t allowed me to read anything new. I seem to have lost the ability to “fall into” a good book. Is it depression? ADHD? Another manifestation of long covid? I adore the Black Jewels Series by Anne Bishop, and this newest installment did not disappoint! 5/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ **potential spoilers to follow** We follow the children, Daemonar, Titian and Jaenelle Satien, as they grow from childhood in to their teenage and young adult years. Daemonar, with his strong sense of duty and loyalty, becomes a man that his father can truly be proud of. Titian learns to believe and trust in herself. Jaenelle Satient does not change much from the previous book; she is impulsive, immature and a huge brat. She treats her family terribly and allows peer pressure to reign over what she knows is right and wrong. While we watch the children, we also see their parents as they navigate through not only parenthood, but their duties as the most powerful and influential men and women in the world. When their duties to both children and their people cross paths, they unfortunately find themselves with some tough calls to make. Throughout the entire book, there is a sense of impending doom. Hints of the taint created by Dorothea and Hekatah start to appear within their lands and they must find the source before it is too late. I have to say, there was no question as to whether or not I hated the villains as soon as I met them. They were immediately wicked and cruel, as well as crafty and intelligent. As the reader, you get to see inside of their heads, to witness their plots and schemes long before anyone else is aware that there is a problem. This gives a sense that the threat of the taint spreading and the rebirth of Hayll is a real possibility. For better or worse, my last few months of reading material has been dominated by Anne Bishop. With the libraries closed I've been unable to return books and have only recently been able to check out some I've been wanting, which leaves me with a couple of books from both her main series — The Others novels, of which I'm currently in possession of three of five (of the main grouping) and The Black Jewels, of which I only have three out of . . . 10, I believe she's up to now. The last one I read was an extension of the original trilogy, Dreams Made Flesh, which I consider to be the best of any of her books (see a full review over at my goodreads). Being able to cast a critical eye over such a volume of writing has been an interesting exercise. On the plus side I can see where some ideas that would be later developed are first appearing. On the negative it's easy for her work to feel repetivitve, especially certain phrases (Daemon's cold, cruel smile is mentioned so often it's almost embarassing). Unfortunately I can also see how her quality of writing has diminished over time — unusual for an author, in my opinion. What struck me most about the Black Jewels series (which I would heartily recommend the original trilogy, plus book #5) is that for a courtly setting there is no typical court nonsense (dresses, protocol, in fighting) and though the POV switches between characters, we never get to see inside the arguably main characters head. Jaenelle is always viewed through other people. It's a stylistic choice I didn't notice right away that works to set her apart, and as the story is about her difference and uniqueness of power, I find that choice fascinating. I was hooked from page 1, let askingm alone once the story itself got started.Lucivar and Cat, such an adorable scrappy pair of adoptive siblings from the get go! This is a series I've read probably about a dozen times since first finding them, although I've lost count how many times I've laughed and cried. The last one that focuses directly on the Dark Court in particular breaks my heart. I cry pretty much from the first page, knowing what is in store. I'm so excited that Anne is finally returning, even if it's not completely focused on the family. Anne built that entire world so well, that I'll take just about anything I can get! I'm even designing a tattoo inspired by the series, though it'll be a while before I get it. I will get it eventually though. Do you have an obsession with a series? BOOK REVIEW TIME! I am a gigantic Black Jewels nerd. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and discussed the books and short stories. It’s no stretch to say that the series changed my life in many positive ways, even though on the surface, you’d think it was a series I’d absolutely hate. But nope. I love it. The Invisible Ring is a standalone novel that is nevertheless tied to the core trilogy and a secondary duology, and it tells the story of Jared, a pleasure slave who is bought by a Queen known as the Gray Lady, and the events that happen as they and other purchased slaves travel back to the Gray Lady’s home, all the while trying to avoid getting killed by a powerful Priestess who wants the Gray Lady dead. At its core, The Invisible Ring is a journey of self-discovery. Jared comes to learn more about the man he is, and also the man he could have been had his potential not been suffocated by the abuse he suffered during his time as a pleasure slave. But make no mistake, there’s plenty of action in the story too, and greater detail about the world that Bishop has set up. It’s a book you could easily skip without missing anything essential to the world or its history, but if you’re a fan of the other books in the series, then I highly recommend reading this one as well. I am absolutely in love with this book series - The Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop(in case you couldn't tell). It was first introduced/suggested to me by my wonderful cousin and I've been irretrievably hooked ever since.
