I just finished this trilogy again and it was another emotional rollercoaster. I had a general idea of how it ended but it still hit me right in the feels! So as I was reeling from the ending, and needing more, I looked online to see if there was a fan theory or maybe something I could hold onto to be in that world a little longer… There are 9 more books!!! I think 5-6 carry on from where I just got to, and there are some short stories and prequels too. It’s fair to say that some online bookstore just got a very large order from me! Hi all! Welcome to another edition of Friday Favorites. This week I present the Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop or what if ACOTAR was dark. An enslaved powerful man forced to whore for the evil Queen while he awaits his prophecized Witch who will restore the land to right. A young woman forced to protect her family before being reborn into her power as Witch, the most powerful with her magic derived from all the Jewels. A race of winged humans with tanned skin, black hair, and bat wings called Eyriens who live in warlike clans in the mountains and are against women as warriors. A Dark Court full of found family and powerful beings based in the Shadow Realm... stop me if you've read this before. 🤭🤭🤭 Look, I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum. I read ACOTAR and enjoyed it. I'm a Nessian Stan and that whole ACOMAF chapter thing. But! If you like dark fantasy, then I highly suggest taking a chance on this series. I'm not bothered by dark subject matter but definitely check your trigger warnings. I probably read this series way too young. (Hi mom!) I can't end this without pointing out these books have all the animal "companions" one could want. I say "companions" because some animals are born with magic as well and called Kindred. They factor as side characters and provide some well needed levity against the dark. Also, before anyone comes for my head, Queen of Darkness (the last book in the trilogy) was published in 2000, and SJM has admitted to being "influenced" by it. 😘 I totally understand art influencing art. I just wish more people knew about these books the way they know about how Tolkien influenced the genre or Erikson spawned grimdark. What's a piece of art that's inspired you to create your own art? Tragic Tuesday All of these books have some tragedy in them. So of course, I love them all! Some are a little darker than others, looking at you Berserk… that one is absolutely devastating. I can thank my husband for finding this series, and introducing me to a story that I don’t think has any real happiness... And now we will never know how it was intended to end, which is also tragic. I recommend all of these anytime you feel like having your soul crushed, it’s a good time! I promise some of these have happy endings or have some humor to them, they aren’t all Berserk level tragedy! The tale is dark, and at times agonizing, but it’s also really quite poignant and beautiful. It has made me curse and sigh, laugh and cry. It’s a story that has seized hold of my heart and will never let go—and I’m perfectly fine with that. Back in the early 2000s, I belonged to a play-by-email writing club. A couple of the women I wrote with recommended 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘑𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘴 to me. Since we all tended to like the same fantasy authors, I didn’t hesitate to run out to the bookstore and buy 𝘋𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥. Once I started reading, I literally couldn’t put it down. Not only did it capture and expand my imagination, it inspired me to refine my own writing style. In my opinion, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘑𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 hasn’t received the recognition it deserves on social media. Anne was a pioneer for the dark fantasy genre. 𝘋𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 was published in 1998, and actually Anne had quite a time getting it published at all since she wrote for a genre that didn’t exist yet. I feel it’s a shame many readers and lovers of fantasy haven’t even heard of 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘑𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘴, especially when bookstagram-popular authors like Sarah J. Maas have been directly inspired by Anne’s characterizations and world building—two aspects her readers enjoy a lot! I love these little mass market paperbacks 🥹 Although…Roc Publishing needs to have better Quality Control: the glued spine is messy, the edges can be stained/dirty, and sometimes there are ink lines where there shouldn’t be in the body of the text. I had to return 4 of these books to Amazon before I had a couple I was okay with using for my projects 😬 Why should you consider getting The Black Jewels Trilogy from me instead of Amazon or any other bookstore? There are some days when my brain just doesn't work. And strangely, it does not feel like the usual depression or anxiety, more like just... nothing at all, a black hole of melancholy and emptiness. And so in the days like this, I return to my favourite books - "Kushiel's Universe" by the amazing Jacqueline Carey, "Inkheart Trilogy" by Cornelia Funke, "The Legend of the Ice People" by Margit Sandemo... But mostly, "The Black Jewels" by Anne Bishop. I'll never forget the first time I read "Daughter of the Blood". I remember 14-year-old-me completely lost in that alluring and sensual prose and that cruel yet beautiful world of Terreille, Kaeleer and Hell. I remember the sleepless night and how I run to the bookstore in the morning, because I yearned so much for the next book. And every time when I start thinking that maybe those books are just my "guilty pleasure", something I should be ashamed of liking, because "you should really read some *serious* literature", they somehow find the way back to my heart. They make me cry, and smile, and laugh. They inspire me. They first made me fall in love with words, with the melody of sentences, and with worlds blooming inside my head. They help me heal. And for that I'll always be grateful. So, no, they're not guilty pleasure. This has to be one of my favourite series ever, and I always manage to reread it about once a year or so! It’s the book I turn to whenever I hit a slump and need to get back into a fantasy world. The book is very dark, and definitely check TWs if you plan on reading it, because there is a serious amount of awful people doing awful things - and there are some awful moments that happen to our main characters. But the book is primarily about hope - it begins as Witch, the thousands of year old wish of Lucivar, Daemon and Saetan is finally born into the three realms. And as she arrives, the war can truly begin. The Black Jewels Series is my all time favorite story. I have read, and reread this many times as well as listened to the audiobooks. The first photo is the Omnibus of the original Trilogy. It was gifted to me from my cousin. 1204 pages for all 3 books. And worth the read. The follow 3 photos are the books in their solo form. About halfway through Heir of the Shadows. Picked this up after learning the influence this has on ACOTAR and SJM's works so I decided to give it a go. . To było dla mnie tak dziwne zderzenie z literaturą, że w niektórych momentach zadawałam sama sobie pytanie: "Czy jestem debilem?" Nie rozumiałam nic, nie wiedziałam o co chodzi, kto jest kim? Miałam wrażenie, że tylko autorka wie, co z czym i dlaczego, a ja błądziłam jak dziecko we mgle. W końcu przejrzałam trochę recenzji i dowiedziałam się, że w drugim tomie zacznę powoli kumać. No więc wzięłam kolejną część i o dziwo tok myślenia i pisania pani Bishop zaczął w końcu mieć dla mnie jako taki sens. I tak mnie tkanie pajęczyny i moc czarownicy porwały, że od razu po skończeniu drugiego tomu sięgnęłam po trzeci. I co? I zamówiłam kolejną część, bo jest jeszcze kilka pytań, na które muszę poznać odpowiedź 😄 Także tak, "czarne kamienie", choć sama się temu dziwię, spodobały mi się. Jednak zdaję sobie sprawę, że ta seria nie będzie dla każdego. Pomimo bardzo ciekawej fabuły, sposób pisania autorki, będzie dla wielu nie do przejścia. Have you read any books by Anne Bishop? I read her Black Jewels Trilogy a long time ago and got sucked into the dark and twisted realms of the books in such a hard way that it became difficult to get back out for some time. It's rare for me to reread books but for me, these books were something else altogether and I've reread them so many many times. They're dark and gruesome and haunting. They're sweet and endearing and absolutely fantastic!! The books revolve around two powerful long-lived brothers and their extremely old equally powerful estranged father who have been waiting for the Queen that is Witch to come for centuries upon centuries. But what happens when she finally arrives? The series has expanded and a lot more books have continued the story ahead and I'm so much more happy for it. 💕 *These books have all kinds of trigger warnings.
