Marathon des Sables - Stage 4 [43km 390+, 4h:07’] “Heat and soft sand” Questa mattina il sole illumina già forte i nostri volti in partenza. Buona parte dei nostri compagni sono partiti alle 6:30, li invidio un po’. Noi primi 150 nella classifica parziale partiremmo tra qualche minuto, alle 8:00 in punto. Farà molto caldo, e la partenza tardiva non aiuterà. Ne abbiamo avuto un assaggio ieri nella giornata di riposo dopo gli 86km, mentre aspettavamo gli ultimi arrivi sotto i tendoni berberi colando di sudore. Per oggi prevedono un picco ulteriore delle temperature, ed io ho già giocato un jolly importante a riguardo, proprio nella tappa lunga. Partiamo verso i primi 10km di drittone su terreno compatto e roccioso, un po’ sconnesso ma decisamente veloce. Non esagero, questa volta veramente, perché la paura di saltare è alta e ora come ora la priorità è riuscire a conservare la top ten. Passiamo il check point, ne approfitto per una dose di acqua fredda in testa. Usciamo e da lì in poi ci sarà una sola costante: sabbia. Tantissima sabbia soffice e dorata, in un alternarsi di dune, sandy jebels e wadi sabbiosi. Qui i marocchini si involano, veleggiando su un terreno che nonostante l’adattamento guadagnato nelle tappe precedenti mi causa sempre un gran dispendio energetico. Cerco linee buone, la sabbia più grigia risulta più compatta, ed è saggia cosa evitare i tratti già calpestati o dove siano passati quad/dune buggy. Merile, con il suo cappello da cowboy, che nella tappa precedente ho recuperato e messo dietro nella generale, qui sulla sabbia soffice, dimostra tutta la sua esperienza di deserti. Provo a seguirlo ma ne perdo le tracce. Il sole picchia duro, sfrutto le water station e mi inzuppo il cappello, che dopo 3km risulta già perfettamente asciutto. Nonostante tutto mantengo un buon ritmo, aggiriamo le dune, stacco la testa, accetto il caldo. Ultimo check point, meno 8 al traguardo, imploro per un pezzetto di ghiaccio, che ficco sotto il cappellino, mi sento rinascere e forzo il ritmo. Do you ever start an out and back run going downhill and think to yourself "this is going to suck to go back up," but you do it anyway? I was pleasantly surprised with how good I felt on the return. Not gonna lie, I definitely miss my trees and water crossings back home, but the desert is starting to grow on me. No rattler encounters today, but lots of skittering and rustling in the bushes. E N D L I C H S T A R T . Etappe 1 offiziell 31,1 km mit 282 hm Start 7:00 Uhr Zeitlimit 10 Stunden . Es ging los mit einem ca.12 kg Rucksack, denn man muss alles selbst tragen was man für die 7 Tage benötigt. . Die ersten ca.10km lief ich mit @youareanadventurestory zusammen und wir quatschten ein wenig...sehr nette Ultrarunnerin ✊ . Schnell merkte man, wie hart dieses Rennen werden wird. . Die Landschaft war einfach #breathtaking and #awesome 😎 . Top 100 schaffte ich nicht, wie vorher vorgenommen und landete auf Platz 200.....ernüchternd und es war OK. . . Etappe 2 offiziell 40,8 km mit 550 hm Start 6:30 Uhr Zeitlimit 13 Stunden . Es war unglaublich hart....erst nur weicher Sand mit 3/4% Steigung dann kleinere Aufstiege über Felsen und Sand. (extrem kräftezehrend) dann durch ausgetrocknetes Gebiet, guter aufgeplatzter härterer Boden, nur unendlich heiß denke knapp unter 50 Grad. Der Rucksack drückte meine Schultern so sehr ein, dass ich ab nun bis zum Ende der 7 Tage Schmerzen hatte. . Ich beendete alle Gedanken über die Gesamtwertung, Top 100 hatte ich mir vorgenommen. (Unmöglich) Ab nun keine Zeitziele mehr, nur noch irgendwie die 7 Tage und 252 km überstehen und als #finisher den @mdslegendary beenden ✊ das nahm mir Druck. So viel zu laufen unter diesen Bedingungen ist komplett irre. Was ich meine? Das hier: . -9 Tage auf nem dünnen Teppich schlafen mitten in der Sahara auf 0,5 x 2 m -alles immer dabei haben was man braucht -Sandstürme -Hitze über 50 Grad -keine duschen oder sonst was -rationiertes Wasser (nur zum trinken nicht zum waschen) -absolutes Kaloriendefizit JEDEN Tag -nix bekommt man ausser den befestigten GPS Tracker (damit sie wissen wo du bist) und du 2 Knöpfe hast, einer für Hilfe der Medicals und einer, wo du erst ne Klappe öffnen musst um ihn zu drücken: NOTFALL / AUFGABE . …so this happened: SANDALF is a Marathon des Sables finisher! 🧙🏼🏅🦯🦯🏜️🥳 #gandalfbutmakeitsandy #sandalf #marathondessables @mdslegendary After 50km of stage 3 I was forced to basically walk/powerhike the rest of the 252km - so about 100km walking - with one and after another day two wooden sticks from our tent. 🦯🦯🚶🏻♀️🥹 Couldn’t put pressure on my feet anymore due to two massive blisters under the balls, obviously caused by the huge amount of sand rubbing for many hours during the long stage. 🦶🏼🫠🥲 Shame, because the distances itself didn’t really seem like an effort and I didn’t have any troubles at all and could’ve really run in the sand quite well. 🫥😐 Came in 34th Women after all in the final ranking, but I could’ve done a lot better, even without pushing harder - although this meant to be „just a very long training week“ for something bigger coming up this year… 👽🤡👻🏔️😋🥳 (STAY TUNED!) Recap Day 2 of 4 marathons in 4 days Es sollte noch ein ganzes Stück wärmer werden als am vorangegangenen Tag. Meine Beine waren auch noch schwer von gestern, aber nach 5km würde das schon gehen, versicherte mir @kirstybrits. Ich versuchte meine Nervosität weg zu lachen und dann ging es auch schon los. Auf den ersten Metern fiel mir bereits das Atmen schwer. Meine Nase blutete. Die Luft war trocken und ganz feine Sandpartikel schwebten durch das Licht der Stirnlampen glitzernd vor uns… Ich versuchte mich davon nicht beirren zu lassen. Einfach weiter. Der Track führte uns stetig steigend hinauf. Mit der aufgehenden Sonne wurden wir schließlich mit einem wunderschönen Blick auf das umliegende Gebirge belohnt, welches in verschiedenen Blau- und Violetttönen gefärbt wurde. Wie im Traum. Auch das Atmen wurde wieder leichter. Also weiter. Meine schweren Beine meldeten sich zu Wort und ein leichter Schmerz kroch von der linken Hüfte abwärts seitlich in das Bein. Jeder Schritt machte es etwas stärker. Lieber nicht zu lange stehen bleiben. Einfach weiter. Dieser Tag wurde zur ersten wahren Herausforderung für mich. Ich teilte mir die Strecke in Intervalle. Die anderen vor mir zu sehen, ermutigte mich, dran zu bleiben. Let‘s do this. Zum Glück ging es auf den Weg zurück vorwiegend leicht bergab. Jetzt einfach rollen lassen. Ich versuchte wieder Leichtigkeit zu finden und die herrlichen Steinformationen zu genießen, durch welche wir uns durch navigierten. Fokus ändern. Die letzten Kilometer teilte ich mir mit @sarah_gearhart. Ich war froh. Und dann hatten wir es geschafft. Zion 100k 🥳✅ My curiosity of desert running was sparked a while back, and this small taste of it exceeded my expectations. I had to go deep into the pain cave to finish this race, the self doubt mixed with the heat was an intense combination to work through. This race taught me about nausea 😂 The day went the opposite as planned and that’s great. I’d say I gained some personal sovereignty after this one 😆 The views were amazing; when I would end up in a dark place I had to take a deep breath in and remember where I was. Stage 2 of the @mdslegendary is in progress. With only 2 withdrawals, Stage 1 was clearly a good warm-up for what’s to come. I was happy to see all my clients finish. The MDS is for many a dream, and it can feel like a dream when you’re out there, a small dot in the vast majestic landscape. I always say that you walk into the desert as one person, and when you come out the other end of the race, something in you has changed. It’s difficult for people who weren’t there to fully comprehend what you’ve been through. Some of it cannot be explained in words. This year brings many changes and I look forward to seeing and hearing people’s experiences. Once again I feel fortunate to have been so inspired by my coaching clients. They are all incredible people with their own unique reasons, goals, and dreams for this race. This year I have worked with people who are in the top elite field, people who take more of a walking approach, and various levels in between. Some are first timers, some are going back. 29K/1800D+ The @ultra.desert series of races are spartan like and extremely challenging. Yesterday’s edition run from nearby the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, started at almost 400 meters below sea level and we ascended for slightly longer than 2km’s, almost to sea level through steep, rocky technical terrain. Thereafter we ran rolling hills for almost 3km’s after which we descended around 2km’s down to the bottom at a different point. We then turned back up and headed back to the start of the 7km+ leg, culminating in a 14km+ route. Those of us who registered for the long edition set off a second time. Personally I was going strong, and on the descent back to the start at the end of the first round I managed to take the overall lead, which I held until after halfway of the second running of the route, but in the heat under the desert sun I was cramping severely at that point and couldn’t hold, luckily I had forged enough of a lead over the rest of the competition to finish 2nd overall, and will always cherish the feeling of leading a race for 9km’s or so. #running #trailrunning #trailrunner #raceday #runningmotivation #runhappy #trailrunninglife #trailrunningviews #desertrunning #trailrace #podium
