MYTH : You can’t gain muscle after 50. This is also my day 17 forearm scorpion with half lotus leg for @cyogalife Sept challenge. No funky arms today. Take a look at the photo in the second slide and compare the difference in lean muscle mass. Most of these gains occurred since mid June so it’s only been 3 months; a fairly short period. My current programme is focused on glutes and back where I know myself to be the weakest. The upshot is this: It’s a myth that women over 50 can’t build muscle. Society keeps telling you that when you hit menopause it’s going to be harder for you to build muscle. The biggest obstacle as I see it is the mindset. Most women who hit the 50s tend to think of weight training as a optional extra to “lose weight” or to fend off osteoporosis. I must confess I was guilty of this way of thinking when I began. I realise now how self - limiting this type of mindset is. The 20 something you in the gym would have been aiming to lift “maximally” - as much as you could possibly lift. So maybe your strength training gains are limited now because your mind set has changed in your 50s? As I’ve continued with this strength training journey, I am convinced that I am nowhere as weak as most popular culture spiel like to depict 50 year old women and only as strong as i’m prepared to put the work in. Another important aspect to strength training and getting results is technique. What I know from my own experience through yoga is the importance of learning how to activate the correct muscle groups for the action you’re trying to execute. The same applies in strength training. Learning good technique to essentially isolate as much as possible the muscle you’re trying to build can help expedite your progress. Technique is essential for both safety and in getting results. So @ciddiaz101 and I got to the gym at different times tonight because I was coming from work. After I finished my benches, I walked up to him at the free weights section & asked to work in with him all flirty & shit since he has the bench I need for Bulgarian split squats, plus I like making him laugh when he's in the zone, for shits & giggles. I turn to the side to do my first set, & ol' girl at the bench next to us is mean mugging me 🤔 I'm thinking "Wtf, maybe she needs a little encouragement" so I winked/nodded at her while I'm doing my set, & she stormed off angrily. Oh hello, morning workouts! My work schedule has been all over the place. This week & for the rest of July, I'll be working swing shifts. Which means hella time in the morning and no time at night. Long time no post. Have a belfie or two lololol 😂🍑 I started week 5 of Strong Curves Gluteal Goddess today. I've been having fun with this program & genuinely feeling stronger. It's also helped me with strengthening my janky hip flexor, & if there's anything I've learned from my days in PT, it's that stretching, resting, & strengthening your injured body part (with professional advice) all contribute to a successful rehab 💪🏼 I'm excited that this portion of my program incorporates more compound exercises. HOW DO I GET MY BOOTY TO GROW? 🍑🎂 • • • This is the most commonly asked question that I get from girls. Growing your booty is something that takes time, patience and consistency. Below are some tips and tricks I have for those who are trying to grow their glutes 👀 • • • • 1️⃣ EAT YOUR PROTEIN!!!! I put this as number 1 because it is a crucial key in growing bigger glutes🍑 if you aren’t fueling your body with the proper nutrients it needs, then how do you expect your booty to grow? In order for anything to get bigger and grow, it needs fuel and lots of it (aka high protein foods such as eggs, legumes, salmon, quinoa are just to name a few) 2️⃣ PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD LADIES!!! I swear by this. It wasn’t until I started lifting heavy that I saw a change in my glutes. As well as upping your weight/ resistance progressively.... you need to challenge your body so it doesn’t get used to the same weight and forces itself to get bigger and stronger. 3️⃣ GLUTE ACTIVATION EXERCISES!!! Ladies! Don’t skip out on this on leg/booty day! This doesn’t need to be something done all day but should be done for about 5-10 minutes as a warm up before your actual lower body workout. By activating your gluteal muscles, you are ‘firing’ them up in an effort to strengthen them. 4️⃣ PATIENCE IS 🔑 !!! Like I said before, growing your glutes will not happen over night but rather in time with patience and a lot of consistency and determination. Most importantly, do not and I repeat DO NOT compare yourself to others. Progress check-in. My gym is still open 🙌🏼 but before anyone freaks, they are only allowing 10 people in at a time and you have to stay 6ft away from other people. Today’s workout exhausted me! Like I could go to sleep 😂 . Some exciting bits - I weighed in at 122lbs today and wore a pair of jeans that used to be too big on me! I then went up in almost every weight in this routine from before. I also went significantly lighter on my assisted chin ups! 💪🏼 On a side note. Got in Workout C super late tonight but had some great company. My pretty niece @emilyyelizabeth10 joined me and killed it! I thought doing workout A again without a rest day would have been too much but it was actually easier today in spite of being super sore. And I felt better/less sore after! Not to mention so much energy I have been bouncing off walls 😂😂 which is nice cause this rain had me in a slump! Anyone got Noah’s number?? We might need the ark if this keeps up! I’m trying to be more consistent about pictures. I’m also trying to avoid doing “the pose” every fit girl does - you know, the one where they bend a leg, point a toe and pop the booty? Day 1 Week 1 Workout A of @bretcontreras1 Strong Curves Gluteal Goddess program! Loved it! It’s nice to have a set regiment to my gym time instead of trying to pick the workouts myself. For the last couple of years, I’ve been doing athletic training. I’m trying to focus on muscle growth right now and I’m doing a focused program. I know that the science supports that shorter workouts (5-6 exercises) and increased weight are the way to get there, but I can’t help feeling like it’s too easy. Strong Curves Gluteal Goddess// Week 5 // Workout B - Lots more exercises not pictured. My rib cage pain is back - grrrr - and affected much of my workout from push presses on and the rest of my day so far. Of course this makes me worried about my upcoming scan since the pain started due to cancer. I’ve mentioned it several times to my oncologist during treatment and he said my body needed to heal. I added another strength training day to this week (SCGG Workout A) and since I woke up soooo early again (hello 5am) I did lots of foam rolling, activation exercises, and dynamic stretching (including these YTWLs - though I cut out the Ys in the video). I’m so glad I took video of my form today because I notice that I’m not getting deep enough in my box squat because the bench is too high for me so I’ll be switching to something shorter for next time for better muscle activation. I probably won’t be able to go as heavy but that’s okay. Good form, time under tension, and progressive overload are the most important things for me to focus on.
