Whenever you fall in love with a writer’s debut novel, there’s always the fear that their second foray may not achieve the same wonderful magic of their first. Thankfully, @sarahadlerwrites brought the same witty, quirky charm to “Happy Medium” that made me love “Mrs. Nash’s Ashes” so much. I read this book in two sittings because I just couldn’t put it down. 🐐 👻 🔮🧑🏼🌾 📺 I laughed out loud so many times thanks to one television-obsessed ghost with a prurient streak. My heart hurt for Charlie, our farmer with a cinnamon roll center, and Gretchen, the professional grifter turned would-be exorcist with a heart of gold. Both characters had so much vulnerability and goodness just beneath the surface that Adler deftly excavated and explored with her writing. In this book, we also get the delightful presence of a ghost—more about him later! Gretchen considers herself a benevolent fraud—bringing comfort to her clients, even if she isn’t being truthful. She is sent to exorcise some ghosts from a farm which is owned by Charlie—a hot as hell man who sees Gretchen as nothing more than a liar. So, maybe not exactly a meet-cute… Enter Everett, a charismatic ghost who has been hovering around the farm (literally) hoping to break a century-long curse. I loved watching Gretchen and Charlie navigate the way through complicated feelings; not just their feelings for and about each other, but also their own feelings about home, and family, and dreams. But Charlie doesn’t want Cretchen’s help because he sees her for a fraud she is. Regardless, he agrees for Gretchen to stay on the farm in exchange for her help around the said farm. To Gretchen’s surprise, there is an actual resident ghost, Everett, whom she can see and communicate with. There is also a good reason why Everett is trying to jeopardize the sale of the farm. Happy Medium is a sweet, slow-burn romance with lots of humor and a dash of angst. I enjoyed how Gretchen and Charlie’s relationship progressed from mistrust on Charlie’s part to friendship and then romance. But for me, Everett stole the show. He was the best and the funniest character. I haven’t read Sarah Adler’s previous book, Mr. Nash’s Ashes, but after reading Happy Medium, I will be adding it to my TBR. 📚BOOK REVIEW📚 Okay first of all. CHARLIE “sweatshirt (iykyk)” WAYBILL can you MARRY ME!!! My husband won’t mind. This book is incredible. I grew to love Charlie and Gretchen without being told to. They don’t start out as the most likeable people, but the writing is so good that one second I was irritated at Charlie and the next I was in love with both of them. Also, Everett Waybill is my favorite 🥹 The ending of this book wrapped the story up so nicely and I really loved @sarahadlerwrites note at the end. But it is Sarah Adler, I LOVED Nash’s Ashes, and I’m a loyal subscriber to her newsletter, so I don’t know if it would have made a difference. (But still, genius thought) The skinny: I loved it. A con person getting instant karma in the fact that her schtick is real and she can talk to (and befriend) a spirit is hilarious. Not to mention, Everett is absolutely snarky and has great television taste. Charlie had the sweetest and kind soul, and I loved how Gretchen brought out the best in both. She was such a unique character and I couldn’t help but cheer for her. I never consider myself a salesperson, but she threw out a “I would hate for it to be gone” and that’s my go-to sales line. 🤭 There’s so much banter and witty dialogue between all the characters, and I wish it translated more into audio. I didn’t feel like the lines were hitting as snarky or had the intended effect it needed to. Regardless, Mara Wilson is Mara Wilson and it was still amazing on audio and of course I would recommend it. Overall, another Sarah Adler hit. I think I like this more than Nash’s Ashes 🫣 I absolutely love how Adler writes and how different her characters are. Different in a good way, because sometimes I feel seen. Anywho, out now. Swipe for synopsis ➡️ MY THOUGHTS: Mrs. Nash’s Ashes was one of my favorite books last year so I was really excited to read Happy Medium. I really enjoyed this unique take on a paranormal romance. I haven’t read a paranormal romcom with a ghost in it before, and it’s now something I want to read more of, especially if the ghost is like Everett! He was so funny, and I loved all of his references to TV shows. Everett was my favorite character for sure! I liked both Gretchen and Charlie, and I thought their romance made sense. He was skeptic about her intentions, and I liked that she was honest about being able to see and talk to Everett. The scenes where they were farming were some of my favorites especially the first time Gretchen meets the goats. Note to self, don’t have almonds in your pocket if you’re around goats! I listened to the audiobook, and really enjoyed Mara Wilson as the narrator. She sounded just like I expected Gretchen to sound, and she was able to bring humor and heart to this story. Overall, I found this romcom unique and refreshing. I like that Adler thinks outside the box and writes books that are different from your typical romance tropes. Not only does she meet Charlie but also a real ghost, Everett. Charlie agrees to let Gretchen stay on and continues to distrust her. I love how Charlie was so thoughtful despite not trusting Gretchen and such a good guy and it makes Gretchen want to be a better person. Everett the ghost really stole the show for me. He was so much fun and added such a great element to the story. Community is defined as a group of people that share a particular attribute. Growing up, these are found in every corner of our lives — school class, soccer teams, band practice, book club. As we get older, it can feel lonely not having these groups to lean on if you aren’t actively looking for them. (This excludes everyone who has signed up for a Pickleball league in the last year, good on you guys.) One of my most favorite things in the world is introducing friends, colleagues, people to one another and creating one big web of connections. That love has spilled over into what I can now understand as community-building, creating a welcoming and warm space for connections to grow into friendship. 🔮 Happy Medium 🔮 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you #partner @berkleyromance and @prhaudio for copies of this book! Available now! Short synopsis: Gretchen is a fake spiritual medium mostly conning people out of money, until a client asks her to get rid of a ghost on a goat farm. My thoughts: After reading and really loving Mrs Nash’s Ashes last year I was so excited for Adler’s next novel. This one didnt have quite the same punch as the first but definitely was still enjoyable. There was a lot of unexpected character growth. I really liked watching Gretchen let down her walls and open up her past with the reader and with Charlie. Charlie was such a grump, and it took a lot for him to trust Gretchen, which took like the entire book (a little too long in my opinion). Everett was a great (although highly inappropriate) comedic relief. I’m very curious what snuggling baby goats would be like. Guarantee it’s nothing like snuggling puppies. This was somewhat inspired by the movie Ghost (Patrick Swaze and Demi Moore) and I can see the resemblance! I am glad that the romantic interest was not the ghost, and he played more of a passing role! The audio is done by Mara Wilson, and she did such a great job of telling the story! Well done. 🔮 Release week review! 🔮 I absolutely adored Mrs. Nash’s Ashes when I read it last year and was so excited to read Sarah Adler’s follow-up, Happy Medium. Gretchen Acorn is a spirit medium - or at least that’s the story she sells her highly paying clients. When one of those clients pays her ten grand to do an exorcism at the Gilded Creek Goat Farm so Charlie Waybill can sell the farm, Gretchen packs her stuff and heads to the country. Charlie, of course, is not the elderly gentleman Gretchen expects but rather a strapping farmer who immediately is wise to Gretchen’s act. From the beginning, I was absolutely delighted by this book. The set up was adorable and (like every other review I’ve seen) I fell hard and fast for Everett the friendly and slightly horny ghost. I loved the development of the relationship between Charlie and Gretchen - seeing them both open up bit by bit was so much fun to read. And the friendship between Everett and Gretchen had me alternatingly laughing and sighing. I was full steam ahead with my five star review until we got to about 80% in the book and we hit the third act conflict which seemed to come pretty out of left field for me and then drug on for a sufficiently long time that I started skimming ahead to get to the resolution. The epilogue wrapped it up really well thankfully, and I landed at about 4.5 stars for this story. Thanks to @berkleyromance for the gifted copy and the invitation to be part of the book tour! It’s about a couple and the wife inherits a manor filled with ghosts who passed away in the property. After a near death experience, she is now able to see and speak to the ghosts. It’s a really cute show. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 • This book was soo much fun! My favorite part of this story is the connection between Gretchen and Everett, the friendly ghost. Everett was needy but in a charming way. But I get it, after not being able to talk to anyone in almost 100 years, I would be super chatty too. Charlie was a little too stuffy for me. I didn’t like that he felt like she needed to bare her soul to him when they hadn’t known each other for very long. I was able to get past it when I saw how much he loved his grandparents. My grandma has Alzheimer’s so the part with his grandpa really got me. The ending was bitter sweet to me. Once you read it, you’ll know why. Overall, a fun read. Happy Medium 👻 My #1 take away, I need a cool ghost bestie! Everett is the real MVP in this book! This was a really fun read. I loved how she went from being a fake medium to actually seeing and maintaining a friendship with a ghost. Charlie is all gruff on the outside but a gory cinnamon roll on the inside, especially with his goats in sweaters 😂😍 I loved the evolution of the farm and their friendship to lovers. There was a lot of character development for everyone (Everett too!). So final take away 👻 ghost bestie 👻 goats in sweaters 👻 enemies to friends to lovers What more do you need in a book?! Happy Pub Week to Sarah Adler and Happy Medium! Thank you Berkley Romance and PRH Audio for my gifted copies. All opinions are my own. I absolutely adored Mrs. Nash’s Ashes so this was a highly anticipated read for me. It took me a little while to get into the story but once I started the audiobook, I was hooked! Mara Wilson’s narration was fantastic! Gretchen is a fake medium sent to help Charlie break his farm’s curse. Charlie doesn’t believe her and spots her for who she truly is right away. Everything changes when it turns out she can see and talk to ghosts. She runs into Everett and he tells her the farm is cursed and Charlie will die if he leaves. Gretchen concocts a plan to help out on the farm and convince Charlie of the truth. I loved so much about this one. Charlie didn’t believe she was a medium but he was such a wonderful man. Gretchen really softened and came into herself living and working for a month on the farm. The friendship she developed with Everett was sweet and of course who doesn’t love baby goats? I can’t wait for more books from Sarah Adler! Mrs.Nash’s Ashes was one of my favorite reads from last year, and when I read the premise for Happy Medium I was so excited: a pro BS-er aka fake Medium, who takes a job from one of her long-time clients to exorcise a “haunted” farm for a man whose ready to sell it, only to discover an actual ghost she can talk to. Romance, a TV-obsessed ghost, and baby goats ensue. This was such an endearing and fun romance! I loved every minute. Mara Wilson’s narration didn’t miss, she brought these characters to life so well. I loved Gretchen and Charlie, they were such great characters and worked so well together. Gretchen went through a great emotional arc and her relationship with her father (iykyk) and the resident ghost: Everett, were so well done. I loved this book so much, and now I am eagerly awaiting Sarah Adler’s next novel! This is more of a grumpy/sunshine romance. We have Gretchen who is a bit shady. She’s a fake medium though she tries to help her clients by giving them comfort and making them feel better than when they came in. One of her best clients sends her to a goat farm to exorcise a ghost. She goes to this farm thinking she’s going to meet an old man and he turns out to be this hot guy named Charlie. That’s not the surprise , the surprise is that there really is a ghost, Everett, and Gretchen can see him. For the first time she actually sees a ghost. Now Gretchen has to stop handsome Charlie from selling the farm so he doesn’t suffer Everett’s fate. Of course Charlie knows/believes Gretchen is a scam artist. Everett Waybill has been stuck haunting the family farm for nearly a century and his interactions with Gretchen are delightfully fun. Gretchen and Charlie romance is slow burn as the two have a lot of distance to cover due to their differences. The ending adds a nice twist which keeps the story fresh and unique. Take one slightly scam artist medium, who actually sees ghosts, and pair her with a grumpy goat farmer and you have one hilarious slow burn of a romcom. Mix in some baby goats and a ghost who is addicted to television for some added fun and giggles. This one had some witty banter, some sizzle in the romance, and lots of laughs.
