Finished reading "Nothing To See Here" by Kevin Wilson. Lillian still keeps in touch with her old friend from high school, Madison, even though their lives have gone in very different directions. Madison lives a life of wealth and privilege with her upwardly-mobile politician husband. Lillian is living with her mother in near-poverty with no real prospects. Madison asks Lillian to move in and be the caretaker of her twin step-children, 10 year olds that burst into flame when they are distressed. First interested in the promise of high pay, room, and board, Lillian then bonds with the children as they face an uncertain and firey future together. I really liked Wilson's writing style in this novel. It is both funny and earnest and leads to a heartfelt reading experience. The twins bursting into flames, which leaves them physically unharmed but burns anything on or near them, really made the book stand out. The journey of Lillian and the twins learning how to both control and work around this condition is the heart of the book. The character work is great and every characer feels distinct and memorable, including the side characters. I've read Wilson's short story collection "Tunneling to the Center of the Earth" and really enjoyed all the stories so I'm not surprised that I liked this novel as well. There is also a touching afterword by the author about how his own journey through fatherhood helped him manage his lifelong anxiety. Üslubu bakımından çok çok kolay okunan, olaylar bakımından da oldukça heyecan verici bir kitap bu kitap. Lillian ve Madison yatılı okulda aynı odada kalırlar. Birbirlerinden oldukça farklı hayatlara ve karakterlere sahip bu iki genç kız çok yakın arkadaş olurlar. Aradan yıllar geçer, büyürler, hayatları değişir, birbirlerini görmezler ama sürekli mektuplaşırlar, böylelikle birbirlerinin hayatlarından haberdar olurlar. Madison ünlü politikacı Jasper ile evlidir. Nothing to See Here 🔥 Lillian takes on a babysitting job for a pair of twins with a rare condition of overheating that leads to bursting into flames when upset (yes, literal flames). Over the course of one summer she builds a bond with the twins that cannot be broken. How far will she go to protect them from a family and world who don’t know what to do with them? This book was the epitome, for me, of a book where I thought about the characters and story when I wasn’t reading. I fell in love with the twins, just as Lillian did, and I felt heavy whenever they showed just how fearful of being abandoned they were. This book was almost 4.5 stars for me but I disliked the relationship between Lillian and the twins’ stepmother, Madison. Lillian was such an empathetic and kind character and I was waiting for her to stand up to Madison’s complacency and privilege in this one-sided friendship. Overall, a beautiful story about found family that was comfy cozy and funny but also really heartbreaking. I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about the ending. Been awhile, but back in March I finished Now Is Not the Time to Panic. This novel follows Frankie, a sixteen year old girl living in nowhere Tennessee, and Zeke, her new to town, troubled friend. Bored and lonely for the summer, the pair accidentally sets off a town panic using a mysterious poster they created. The poster follows Frankie into adulthood, even well after the panic has ended. I found this book so engaging. The prose and Frankie’s inner monologue, while not overly complicated, was strikingly unique. Frankie and Zeke are two teens dedicated to art and their dedication verges on obsession. Kevin Wilson’s writing perfectly captures Frankie’s growing obsession, making the reader both despise her and agree with her. Frankie is only an extreme of every teenager, but we can’t help but be frustrated by her rash decisions and obsessive behavior. I typically don’t like books that include a perspective from the present and one from the past, because one is always more interesting than the other. However, in Now Is Not the Time to Panic, these two perspectives blended so seamlessly together, it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. I feel like I’ve blinked an almost missed the whole of April 😂. I just looked to see when my last post was and it was April 4th 😱. I’ve been so busy though: I’ve had my mam, my sister & my sister in law all visiting so haven’t really had the time or, to be honest, the inclination to sit and write reviews. I actually think that in the interest of posting more regularly I’m going to try and keep my reviews shorter. I’m also going to post a photo of the blurb so that I don’t have to describe it. @kevinwilsonauthor in my humble opinion, is a genius! I ADORE his writing. It’s whimsical and yet feels super realistic all at the same time. This is my third book by him and while Nothing To See Here remains my firm favourite, this and Perfect Little World are not far behind. I love the humour, Frankie’s triplet brothers are an absolute hoot, I can’t even imagine what it would be like growing up the only girl surrounded by so much testosterone 😂 and the opening scene with the watermelon in the pool is just the perfect introduction to all of our main players! Does this sound odd? Intriguing even? Well, give it a go and see for yourself! And read all of his other work while you’re on with it 👌🏻😍
Personally, I love a little side of magic with my plot. Magical realism is when fantasy slips into everyday life, it is such an entertaining and surprising subgenre to read. ⭐️NOTHING TO SEE HERE REVIEW⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely LOVED this book. It was everything that I like - a bit weird but in a clever way, short, and really funny all the way through. The story starts with Lillian who is considering how shit her life has become since she got kicked out of a posho boarding school because she took the hit after her roommate got caught with drugs in their room. Because she was on a scholarship, Lillian got booted out of there pronto. But because she loved her roommate Madison, they stayed in touch. Madison stayed in her posh boarding school, got a career in politics and married the guy whose campaign she worked on. Then one day Lillian gets a letter asking to meet. There’s something Madison needs her to do. And it’s really bloody weird. Her senator husband’s previous wife has died. And she’s left their two kids, twins Bessie and Roland, and Madison needs Lillian to look after them. Except the kids often self combust. Yep, they just simply set themselves on fire. No one knows how or why. The kids are completely unharmed, it literally doesn’t affect them at all. But it’s not really a good look for the senator so they’re going to be kept a secret. By Lillian. and that’s more or less the story. But it’s so interesting and clever and witty. Wilson’s writing is just perfection and I could happily have read another 100 pages of this story which is not something I say about many books. I don’t know how else to describe Nothing To See Here other than it gives sad girl novel energy without there actually being a sad girl? But I highly recommend it, it’s brilliant. A rare 5 stars from me.

♥️ The one where I say Now Is Not the Time to Panic by @kevinwilsonauthor felt like an unexpected cross between Past Lives and the Slenderman myth… Frankie and Zeke are lonely, artistic 16 year-olds who meet in a gladiator-style fight to get a greased-up watermelon out of a swimming pool. She a writer, he an illustrator, and they quickly decide to ‘do art’ for the summer. What results is a mysterious poster with his illustration and her copy – and, once they paper their small town in Tennessee with it, the locals start wondering if a satanic cult is behind their work. When some kids use the non-existent cult as an excuse for why they came home drunk and high (‘the cult kidnapped us and made us take drugs!’), the town loses it. Curtain twitchers, vigilante justice, trigger happy cops… you get the picture. Naturally, within such a fever pitch, people get hurt in real life in very real ways. So that gave me a sniff of the Slenderman, but was about Past Lives (PS, if you haven’t seen, SEE! So good!)? Zeke is Frankie’s first love (though his feelings were more inscrutable to me), and when as an adult, she is outed as the creator of this poster, she must confront her memories of the past and seeks out the Zeke of the present. While both have taken very different paths, the summer of their poster dramatically altered the shape of their lives. The reminiscence of it is really special. And this book is special. It’s colourful and sweet and truly creative and I felt at once as though I were reading as an adolescent and an adult. Now is the time for me to read more Kevin Wilson.

Książka, która trafiła do mojej wrażliwości, jest bardzo "moja". Powieść, która wzbudziła we mnie nostalgię za moimi późnymi nastoletnimi latami, kiedy czytałam dużo książek obyczajowych. Bardzo wciągająca, angażująca, nie mogłam się od niej oderwać. Przesłuchałam 4 godziny audiobooka, świetnie czytanego przez Laurę Breszkę na platformie Storytel, praktycznie za jednym zamachem. W pewnym sensie metaforyczna powieść, ale zdecydowanie w sposób nienachalny. O odrzuceniu, o wykluczeniu, o odmienności, o strachu przed nieznanym, o nowych początkach, o akceptacji, o miłości, o trosce. Świetnie wykreowani bohaterowie, z którymi bardzo się zżyłam, zwłaszcza z główną bohaterką i z dziećmi, kibicowałam im. W pewnym momencie ze współczucia aż ścisnęło mi się serce. Przemiana głównej bohaterki jest bardzo dobrze pokazana. Zwroty akcji, zarówno na początku książki, jak i pod koniec książki, były zdumiewające. Tuż przed zakończeniem pomyślałam sobie, że zakończenie albo ogrzeje moje serce albo je złamie. Na szczęście, okazało się, że było urocze i otulające. Essa semana joguei pela primeira vez o Fury of Dracula, jogo de dedução para equipes criado em 1987 que já está na sua 4ª versão. A idéia do jogo é simples: o jogador que controla o Dracula triunfa se avançar sua trilha de influência até completar 13 pontos. Caso os jogadores que controlam os caçadores conseguirem derrotá-lo antes que isso aconteça, vencem o jogo. O jogo conta com um mapa enorme da Europa, cheio de cidades e caminhos que é onde tudo acontece. Usando uma série de ações, você precisa se movimentar para descobrir pistas do ponto de partida do Dracula e seu atual paradeiro, além de precisar das cartas de armas e eventos para que você esteja bem equipado quando rolar uma emboscada, seja do Conde em pessoa ou de seus pupilos escondidos nas cidades. A primeira parte do jogo é mais morosa. O movimento é escasso (pois só podemos nos movimentar durante o dia) e muitas ações são gastas tentando se equipar de maneira adequada. Porém, quando o bichão aparece, o clima do jogo muda e fica MUITO divertido. O Dracula tem umas cartas MUITO fortes e ir pro 1x1 contra ele nunca é uma boa idéia, fazendo com que a galera fique com medo real. Mas acontece muito e você acaba tendo que se virar nos trinta, senão “Partiu Hospital!”. E foi exatamente isso o que aconteceu com três dos quatro caçadores. HOS-PI-TAL. Pra vocês terem idéia da força do Dracula e de seus pupilos, o jogador que o controlava fez tudo isso faltando 2 pontos de vida pra ele morrer (ele começa com 15). Quando vamos para o hospital, perdemos TODAS as cartas que conquistamos e daí pra voltar a ter uma luta honesta contra o vampirão novamente leva uma Era. Ele causou mais de 25 pontos de vida antes de tomar a estacada final e perder com honra. Se não fosse ele topar batalhar com o único de nós que ainda tinha seus itens, já era. Palmas para o Dracula. This is one of the best books I have ever read. When I first heard the premise, I immediately thought it was not the book for me and OH how wrong I was. Bessie and Roland are strange but also not so strange that you can't imagine children like them and that makes them lovable almost instantly. Lillian and Madison, while somewhat archetypal, and all the other adults in the story are just outside the realm of reality, but you believe them and their motivations. All the characters read well and feel real despite their extraordinary circumstances. Whether this story is about finding your family or accepting your flaws or simply a story about children catching fire, it is heartfelt, quirky, entertaining and delightful. These children are my children, and I will not be forgetting them easily. Book 24 of 2024 Frankie and Zeke jointly made a poster together in the year of 1996. They decide to leave it unsigned and plaster it anywhere and everywhere they can in their small town. When people start noticing, they believe it is evil. Frankie and Zeke now are worried about what this could do to them once their secret is out. This is my second book, written by Kevin Wilson. I really enjoy the way he writes. Immersive, light-hearted, and easy to read. While I did prefer Nothing to See Here better. I really enjoyed this one, too. ✨REVIEW✨ Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson (2020) I really enjoyed this book. I was looking for something fun to read to get my spirits back up while reading a few bummers in a row, and that was exactly what I found in Nothing to See Here. Wilson’s novel is riotously fun and funny, wickedly silly, and surprisingly heartwarming. The book begins with the main character, Lillian, struggling in her lost years, incredibly gifted and stuck in her opportunity-less hometown. In her youth, Lillian was a star student and won a scholarship to boarding school, where a favor for her wealthy, beautiful, and charming roommate caused her to be expelled, ending her chances for a promising future. Years later, this same alluring friend calls upon her for another favor, this time to be a governess for her politician husband’s children from an earlier marriage. The only catch- the children sometimes spontaneously combust. Lillian takes on this challenge and hilarity ensues. I recently spotted this novel in the Atlantic’s list of 136 Great American Novels and was surprised as humor books are seldom included in this category, so I tried to think deeper and see what about this book made it so. This is a novel about redemption and second chances, which is a concept that America prides itself on. It’s also largely about class, opportunity and what circumstance allow for success in America. It talks about image and material success versus emotional fulfillment, and we watch the characters become better people, as they grow and learn what parenthood and truly caring for others is actually about. In all, this novel delivered exactly what I needed it to and made me feel better. It’s a great book that is light and funny, while also handling some serious issues so gracefully that the we barely know it’s happening underneath the laughs. Also, extra points in my heart for a casual WuTang reference. This was a great read, quick, fun and weird, and I would definitely recommend it. 4⭐️ Thanks for reading! ✨ -B

The premise sounded too silly 😜 What made me actually read this story was the hilarious video of Hoda and Jenna talking about this “Pants on Fire” book aka Nothing to See Here. I laughed so hard that I thought maybe I should check out this book 🤔 I really enjoyed it‼️ It was a perfect blend of quirkiness, humour and heart. Like Kevin Wilson’s kooky “Nothing to See Here,” one must suspend some disbelief in order to buy the plot of “Now Is Not the Time to Panic.” Specifically, how a rather innocuous drawing with a non sequitur phrase fueled unbridled Satanic fears, and that the two were never discovered until decades later. These are kids hanging photocopied posters in broad daylight, not Banksy. With a straightforward story, one-sided perspective and young adultish sensibilities, I found myself frequently bored. There were only glimpses of Wilson’s offbeat humor, and for a short novel, he mined the hell out of the usual coming of age tropes. In some ways this approach fit the era (mid-90s), and the tedium of filling your days in a pre-digital summer vacation, but it also overshadowed the best part of the novel – the impact of fleeting friendships. Wilson writes about this quick, intense friendship with a clarity and warmth that only hindsight can provide. So, it was disappointing to have an ending that felt rushed and incomplete. Actress Ginnifer Godwin gave an engaging performance that helped keep things moving even when it felt like the plot had stalled. I enjoyed her portrayal of teenage Frankie and Zeke, but she softened some of the more madcap edges that make Wilson’s writing fun. Nothing to See Here follows Lillian as she accepts a nanny job from her high school best friend. The catch? These children catch on fire from time to time. Perfect little world Kevin Wilson ★★☆☆☆ "Perfect little world" setzt sich mit der Idee auseinander, Kinder in einer Gemeinschaft aufzuziehen, in der alle Ressourcen zur Verfügung stehen. Das Konzept finde ich spannend und es bietet viel, über das man schreiben kann. Die Umsetzung hat für mich aber nicht funktioniert. Viele Themen werden nur angeschnitten. Das Buch spielt über viele Jahre, ich konnte für die Zeit aber kein Gefühl entwickeln, da so wenig beschrieben wurde. Mir waren es zu viele Charaktere, ich wusste überhaupt nicht, wer wer ist. Der Schreibstil ist kühl und so waren mir die Charaktere einfach egal. Ich weiß auch nicht, ob ich es ohne die Leserunde mit @soulzucker und @leo_la_loewenherz zu Ende gelesen hätte. So wenig haben wir uns noch nie einer Leserunde ausgetauscht. Co powiecie na książkę o płonących dzieciach? Niby w sensie dosłownym, lecz ja doszukałam się w niej drugiego dna! Nie wiem czy to tylko moja fanaberia czy też nadinterpretacja, ale dostrzegłam w tej książce coś więcej, a więc nie potraktowałam jej jako literatury science-fiction. Moim zdaniem jest to książka o dzieciach z wadami genetycznymi, z problemami, które są izolowane od świata zewnętrznego, ze względu na wstyd i ze strachu przed opinią społeczną. Jest to pozycja o dzieciach, o których się nie mówi, przy których rozmowy milkną, którymi nawet rodzice nie chcą się zajmować. Książka o dzieciach, które są pokrzyżowaniem planów. Arkham Horror, 2nd edition My partner has a very funny thing she does in mythos related game properties where she hates magic. So in any situation where she could gain forbidden knowledge, she refuses and throws it away or discards it as soon as she can if she can't avoid it. She also tends to play characters that don't take or use spells and are very straightforward people about town. We leaned into that aspect this game by playing against the Great Old One who punishes you with a doom for drawing tomes, so mechanically we had to stay away from especially the unique items deck.
