Tra i deportati liberati – circa 120.000 uomini, donne, bambini – vi erano persone di tutte le età e professioni e l’esercito si trovò ad assolvere anche funzioni abitualmente gestite dalla società civile. Nonostante le condizioni estremamente difficili, presto furono formati due gruppi teatrali, un’orchestra, un giornale, per i bambini vennero attivate scuole e orfanatrofi e l’attività culturale all’interno dell’armata ebbe negli anni un notevole sviluppo. Story is kinda creepy and unsettling, quite different to the film,some parts are haunting and melancholic. I must have a fascination for the overlap between poetry and prose. This, already, is surprising - I have never been able to truly appreciate poetry (here, I said it). I must also have a weak spot for short story collections. Case in point is White Nights - the first work in prose by Polish poet Urszula Honek, longlisted for the 2024 International Booker Prize. The thirteen stories in this collection are interconnected, giving us a view of the life (and lives) of a village in rural southern Poland. As one might expect, the thirteen lives in question are plagued by all sorts of misfortunes - death, isolation, broken relations, poverty. A pretty grim premise. But. The writing, oh, the writing! Honek turns this rather grey setting in an oniric landscape, where, yes, bad things happen, dreams are conceived and crushed, but a certain lyricism compels you to read on. This collection reminded me of Spoon River: the characters inhabit a hazy limbo, they live but they could just as well be ghosts. Most of the stories feel like a bittersweet mid-sleep apparition that makes you wake up unsettled. Last but not least, as a book in translation, none of these emotions would have been accessible had it not been for the amazing translation by Kate Webster. Translators are the unsung heroes of literature, and it’s always good to see them acknowledged on the front cover of the books they work on. I've read so much of Czeslaw MIlosz's work over my adult life, that this insightful little collection of essays by fellow Polish writer, Eva Hoffman, surprised me. It provided a moving inside view of him as a man and intellectual. What were his struggles, his interests as an intellectual and dissident in a career that spanned Vilnius, Warsaw, Paris, New York, Berkeley, Italy and elsewhere? TW: S*XUAL ABUSE (slide 4) Piotr Odmieniec Włast is one of these figures who seem to be constantly "forgotten" and in need of being restored to the canon. A gifted writer associated with the Young Poland movement, he was reduced to a curiosity, a crazy poet haunting the history of Polish literature. Meanwhile, he was one of the most interesting literary voices of his time, and definitely the most misunderstood. Could he be the first Polish transgender writer? Włast's work has been "revived" several times: at the end of the 1960s, in the 1980s and at the beginning of the 21st century. Despite the waves of renewed interest, he still remains virtually unknown outside Polish academia. Most of the texts I encountered are written from the feminist perspective and reclaim Komornicka as a forgotten woman poet. But perhaps Komornicka never actually existed. As is always the case with historical figures, using modern labels can be tricky. However, I still side with the scholars who insist on respecting Włast's chosen name and identity. The writers’ best-known novels are Quo Vadis and Trilogy. Sienkiewicz was born in the village of Wola Okrzejska, in an impoverished noble family with the Oszyk coat of arms. At the age of twelve, initially living in a boarding house right next to Świętojańska Street, Sienkiewicz began studying at the Realny Junior High School in Warsaw. Then, in the years 1862 to 1864, he continued his education at Junior High School No. II. In the fall of 1864, Junior High School IV moved. He won the first prize for his essay “Żółkiewski’s Speech to the Army Cecora” in the exam. In October 1866, Sienkiewicz was admitted to the Faculty of Law at the Warsaw School of Economics, but he quickly resigned from this field and, in accordance with his parents’ will, studied medicine, which he changed to the Faculty of Law. Philological and historical. It was probably around this time that he began writing his first unpublished novel (The Sacrifice). In 1869 he made his debut as a journalist. Sienkiewicz wrote under the pseudonym “Litwos” for “Gazeta Polska” and “Niwa”. Together with actress Helena Modrzejewska and a group of their friends, he went on a trip to the United States. In 1880 he wrote the historical work Tatar Captivity and worked on the historical novel With Fire and Sword. This novel (With Fire and Sword), similarly to the subsequent parts of the Trilogy, brought the writer great popularity and met with extraordinary social reception. In 1896, the writer began working on a new novel, The Teutonic Knights. He wrote the novel On the Field of Glory (1903-1909), which was to be the beginning of a new trilogy. Sienkiewicz was married three times, Sienkiewicz had a son and a daughter. Sienkiewicz died in 1916 of heart aneurysm at the age of 70. International Booker longlist reading journey 12/13 WHITE NIGHTS by Urszula Honek (translated by Kate Webster) is a book of loosely interconnected short stories set in rural Poland. These are bleak narratives—death features in most—and what has stayed with me is less character or plot but a haunting emptiness, an existential void, a hollow at the center of these stories. The prose is stunning, though the collection overall demands patience. Each story reminds me of a Picasso-style sketch, tracing the outlines of a moment of the protagonist’s life. The connections among the stories, though present, are somewhat wispy, a tendril of a charcoal line snaking towards another. This is the kind of collection I think I’d appreciate even more upon re-reading, and while I didn’t mind flipping back to prior stories to refresh my memory, others who prefer more linear storytelling may find not quite enough substance to latch onto here. I loved how this is a book about rurality. Nature shapes so much of the characters’ existence and their experience of time, from the passing of the seasons to the passing of the hours. Honek has a keen eye for how the landscape reflects time and how the rhythms of life are governed by dawn and dusk and weather, writing about it with an eloquence and beauty that belies the hopelessness of the stories. I’d recommend this one to readers who enjoy literary short stories, exploring the desolation of a crumbling community, and prose that is both chilling and masterful. 4.25/5 stars. Akoby očakával, že viete niečo viac, ako že takáto revolúcia bola a koniec, a v takom prípade sa pri mne Ryszard veľmi mýlil. Zo začiatku som si teda potrebovala aj troška dodatočne googliť, kým som sa zorientovala, ale rýchlo som sa našla a odvtedy to bolo jednoducho veľmi zaujímavé čítanie na tému, o ktorej som dokopy nič nevedela. Por fin he logrado leer una obra de Andrzej Sapkowski. Antes de la llegada de dicho autor, en Polonia no existía un término masculino para "bruja", lo que debería darnos rápidamente una idea de su inmensa influencia en la literatura fantástica polaca. A pesar de que tanto los videojuegos como la serie de Netflix han dado fama internacional a su saga de libros protagonizada por Geralt de Rivia, lo cierto es que ni siquiera así han llegado a ser libros que llenen los escaparates. Puedo entenderlo, y es que ni su estilo ni su fondo apelan a un público amplio. Más allá de que "El último deseo", el primer libro de la saga, esté dividido en relatos, tanto el desarrollo de personajes como su visión eslava de del folklore europeo, no son comunes en la literatura contemporánea. Por momentos, Sapkowski parece proveniente de un siglo anterior al XX. Su dominio de los diálogos es su mejor arma, que consiguen aunar dinamismo con esbozos del mundo que nos presenta. Aunque el formato de este primer libro puede echar para atrás a quien busca meterse de lleno en un mundo nuevo nada más empezar, a mí me ha ayudado a componer poco a poco el carácter de Geralt y Yennefer, sin que la historia pueda llegar a abrumar. No creo que llegue a empatizar con sus acciones muy a menudo, pero dudo que Sapkowski haya querido crear héroes o ídolos, ni mucho menos.

W książce Marcina Oskara Czarnika najbardziej podoba mi się z to, co wyziera zza efektownej formy. To co żywe, ciepłe i pulsujące. Podoba mi się zagubienie, odtrącenie, wstyd i poczucie winy – ten cały brud, który pisarz z siebie wyrzuca, jak mówił wczoraj autor na spotkaniu w Rzeszowie. Mieszanka troski i żalu, miłości i niechęci, podziwu i strachu, czułości i gniewu, z jaką Tomasz myśli o matce i ją wspomina, z jaką do niej lgnie i z jaką się jej wstydzi. Podoba mi się – i wzrusza mnie, a równocześnie budzi złość – gorliwość małego chłopca, który drży ze strachu przy konfesjonale. Wzruszają mnie też jego rozpaczliwe próby wpasowania się. Ten nieporadny, siedmioletni związek z kobietą, szarpanie, mocowanie, trwanie ze strachu, „by odrobić kogoś lub coś”. Próby wejścia w krakowską miejskość, rozbrajające chwile, gdy zdradza go gwara. I wreszcie – klub, Jan-Maria, pierwszy nieśmiały taniec, wyzwalające dzielenie się bólem. Podoba mi się wreszcie to, co „Misterium” robi ze mną i moją pamięcią. Obrazy dzieciństwa bohatera przeplatane z pieśniami śpiewanymi w trakcie nabożeństw i uroczystych mszy uderzyły mnie z niespodziewaną siłą zapachem kadzidła, mrocznym chłodem kościoła, dźwiękiem dzwonów. „Dla niektórych osób z mojego pokolenia język Kościoła był formacyjny” – mówił wczoraj autor, i zanotowałam sobie te słowa, a przy nich wielkie TAK. A równocześnie lektura „Misterium” wzbudziła dziwną nostalgię. Żal za światem, który porzuciłam, bo był opresyjny, ale i – był w jakiś sposób prosty. A wolność czasem budzi lęk. Jasne, to wszystko, co autor robi z językiem, to przewrotne wykorzystanie Biblii, ironia, groteska, nieheteronormatywność i niebinarność zderzona z religijnym dyskursem, to wszystko robi wrażenie. Jest świeże, innowacyjne, warte pochwał krytyków. Ale nie to zostanie we mnie po lekturze „Misterium”. Dlatego wczorajsze spotkanie w Wypożyczalni Muzycznej w Rzeszowie – sposób rozmowy o tej świetnej książce – jednak trochę mnie rozczarowało. Było jak seminarium na polonistyce z gościnnym udziałem autora. Zdania, konstrukcje, tropy. Można i tak mówić o literaturze. Ale czy nie zostajemy wtedy gdzieś obok tego co ważne? FLIGHTS by Olga Tokarczuk; translated by Jennifer Croft ✈️ 1) Last night, I finished JAMES by Percival Everett (you can read my mini-review in story / full review on Goodreads), now it’s time for… 2) FLIGHTS: As I try to control my rage at the fact that it’s full-blown snowing outside (ughhh, why are you here? 😵💫), I’m going to concentrate on my loves (books). Admittedly, I am hot and cold when it comes to Nobel Prize winner Tokarczuk: I loved THE BOOKS OF JACOB, but I was not feeling DRIVE YOUR PLOW OVER THE BONES OF THE DEAD (cool title tho). While I found the former to be captivating and engrossing, I found the latter irritating most of the time. So, where will that put FLIGHTS? 🧐 3) I have seen an avalanche of mixed reviews for FLIGHTS. Some call it a masterpiece, others find it tedious. Where THE BOOKS OF JACOB and DRIVE YOUR PLOW had clear-cut plots among the madness, FLIGHTS is fractured, philosophical, and told in a vignette style. FLIGHTS is much more meditative in scope. It’s not going to be everyone’s bag. 4) My progress: Well, I’ve been reading this book for the past week, so I’ve made quite a bit of progress. I’m past the halfway mark (can’t fully verify because the book isn’t in front of me, atm). I’ll keep my thoughts to myself for now, but I’ll say this: it is holding my interest. But, yes, it is a bit of a slow burn (don’t even know if that’s the appropriate sentiment). Will it all come together by the end? Sięgacie po książki Pani Anety Jadowskiej? Znacie już przygody Franka i Finki? 😍 "Szczwane sztuczki" to drugi tom opowiadający losy przewspaniałego rodzeństwa. Po wydarzeniach z pierwszej części nie ma czasu na odpoczynek, gdyż tuż za rogiem czekają kolejne przygody. Ale jakie... musicie przekonać się sami. Już pierwszy tom był dla mnie cudowną, pełną ciepła przeprawą, a ten był jeszcze lepszy. Pomimo, że jest to książka dziecięca (ale zdecydowanie nie dziecinna), z mnóstwem przygód, to porusza wiele naprawdę ważnych i trudnych tematów. W tym przypadku mamy między innymi wykorzystywanie zwierząt w cyrku czy trudne relacje z rodziną i brak akceptacji z ich strony. Były momenty gdzie zaszkliły mi się oczy ze wzruszenia. Bardzo wartościowa rzecz! Polecam tym młodszym, ale i starszym czytelnikom. Today, On the occasion of 'World Book Day', I was at the NCPA Mumbai Library to read out some of my favorite poems of a polish poet and talk about our Page to Stage series, where we bring books to the stage. The Library had displayed some of its treasures on display, here are the pics of Vijay Tendulkars scripts in his hand writing, Sakharam Binder. Mahesh Elkunchwar's 'Wada Chirebadi' and my favourite 'Atmakatha'. Most of these scripts are donated by late Sulbha Deshpande, the prolific thespian who lived in a simple house in Mahim and made Mahim Municipal School their taleem (rehearsal) space. Translation of Karnad's 'Tughlaq' in Marathi by Tendulkar and also Translation of Becketts 'Waiting for Godot' by Arvind Vishwanath in handwritten copy was on display. LP of Amjad Ali Khan, Lata Mangeshkar reciting Bhagwad Geeta with such a pleasing picture on it. An unbelievable catalogue of Rodin's exhibition at the NCPA. There were some scripts donated by Chetan Datar too and amidst them was a stamp of Commaraswamy. Just last week, I was watching a film by Late Kumar Sahani, and it had 2 Title cards/quotes from Commaraswamy, at the end of the film Thankyou was mentioned to NCPA Library. That night I was thinking, where is that time when aesthetics was part of films, Cultural Theories were studied, Libraries were a sight for research. Something is lost in time. Today, I spent time looking at the lost time, a time gone by. 🌲 Casa de Dia, Casa de Noite de Olga Tokarczuk 🌲 7/10 💫 Esta era a última obra que me faltava ler da escritora Olga Tokarczuk, pelo menos daquelas que foram traduzidas ou para o inglês ou para o português. Confesso desde já que não foi a minha preferida. No entanto, foi muito boa. A única razão pela qual não adorei tanto como adorei outras foi pelo simples facto de não me ter revisto muito nesta narrativa e ter considerado a leitura ligeiramente confusa. Para além disso, o tom é bastante calmo e lento e como o livro é extenso chegou a um pouco em que perdi um pouco o interesse. Acho que só no fim voltei a estar realmente interessada e a adorar certas passagens. I recently read 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 and am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, even though I’m not usually a fan of short stories. The author's ability to create captivating stories in just around ten pages per story is impressive. 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 is a collection of thirteen short stories that focus on grief, death, poverty, and the hardships people in poor villages in Southern Poland face. Despite the hopelessness in most of the stories and the repeated subject of death, the author’s poetic writing made it engaging to read these short stories. The author, Honek, does an excellent job of immersing you in the world of the Beskid Niski region of Poland, where the stories take place. The stories feel authentic, universal, and memorable. What I loved most about this collection was how all the stories were connected - something I was not expecting. This meant that key events in the town were revisited from multiple perspectives. I wish 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 had made the shortlist for this year’s International Booker Prize. I would re-read this collection of short stories now that I can see how the characters are connected. This is the first book I have read published by MTO Press, and I am impressed with their work. Po lekturze tego reportażu słowo ciałko nie brzmi już tak, jak kiedyś i nie znaczy już tylko tego, co kiedyś. Kolejna z historii o odbieranych, kradzionych dzieciach, dla których ich rodziny, szczególnie matki nie były dość dobre w opinii nacjonalistycznego państwa i Kościoła. Obok systemowej kradzieży pojawia się też zwykły handel, utowarowienie dzieci, oparte na oszukiwaniu rodziców. Doskonale oddano tu ludzka bezradność w starciu z dobrze funkcjonująca machina.Bohaterowie i bohaterki, kradzione dzieci i okradzeni rodzice, opowiadają swoje historie, a reporterka jest uważna i dyskretna słuchaczka. Opowieści są podzielone na mniejsze całostki, dzielone fragmentami dotyczącymi np ekshumacji czy sytuacji w ośrodku dla kobiet (należałoby nazwać to raczej karcerem, ta część najbardziej zapadła mi w pamięć), ale to tylko oddaje ich porwany, nie zawsze pewny charakter, chaos prawny i niepewność tych ludzi, ich poczucie krzywdy, emocje. Zwięzłość i zwartość narracji, częste udzielanie nie zawsze oczywistego głosu bohaterom i bohaterkom, baczne zwrócenie uwagi na kontekst i tło historyczne (bez przeładowania jednak) oraz pokazywanie różnych perspektyw, także wątpliwości co do charakteru tego procederu i jego zasięgu, unikanie łatwych wniosków (wyjąwszy tytuł mocno ustawiający lekturę) i niejednoznaczność (przy takim rozkładaniu akcentów, że ani na moment nie traci sie wiary w słowa ofiar, pokazywanych niekoniecznie jako ofiary, ale ludzie o ogromnej sile) to duże zalety reportażu, który jakoś wcale nie jawi mi się jako tak zupełnie historyczny... #reportaż #book #ciałko #katarzynakobylarczyk #hiszpaniakradnieswojedzieci #czytam #polskireportaż #polishliterature #polskaliteratura #wydawnictwoczarne #reading #bookstagram #lecturedumoment
Braliście kiedyś udział w radiowym konkursie? Wygraliście coś? 😀 Główna bohaterka książki Ewy Przydrygi pt. "Źródlisko" miała to szczęście (bądź też nieszczęście) wygrać w takim konkursie rodzinny pobyt w luksusowej rezydencji. Jak się szybko okazało, ona i jej towarzysze nie zaznają tam spokoju i będą musieli po raz kolejny zmierzyć się z tym, co wydarzyło się kilka lat wcześniej. Sam pomysł na fabułę jest świetny. Luksusowy dom wykorzystany jako pewnego rodzaju escape room. Nasi bohaterowie muszą bowiem wykonywać zadania, aby móc opuścić to miejsce i odzyskać to, co zostało im odebrane. Bawiłam się bardzo dobrze i wręcz pochłaniałam tę historię, jednak czegoś mi w niej zabrakło. Przede wszystkim nie zżyłam się z bohaterami, więc też jakoś bardzo im nie kibicowałam. Dopiero przy samym końcu pojawiły się większe emocje i nadzieja, że wszystko skończy się dobrze. Cała historia jest bardzo naciągana, ale jeśli przymknie się na to oko to można naprawdę spędzić dobrze czas z tą książką. Bardzo ciekawy epilog. Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, Olga Tokarczuk 📍 literary fiction, mystery ✨️ 4/5 🌍 7/196 × Poland A slower story more focused on the atmosphere rather than the plot, that still packs a punch in the end. 💭 The images of this small, remote village really captured my attention from the start. I loved following the protagonist on this journey, her simplicity and obsession with the nature. All of it creates a unique character, one that you might not agree with but, nevertheless, an interesting and thought provoking one. However, her ramblings about the horoscope were a bit too much for me at times. She went on and on and often bored me with it. I loved the ending – I didn't quite guess it and I loved how the author made me speculate if the story will take on a more fantastical route. The portrayal of a small community is very intriguing in this novel, the people are not as close as you would expect them to be. The protagonist doesn't know a lot about her closest neighbors but rather focuses on animals and their simple, and often cruel, living. ❄️ I'd recommend reading this during the colder months, wrapped up in a blanket and with a warm drink for comfort!

Witajcie, książkoholicy! Czytaliście "Necrovet"? Bo naprawdę warto! "Necrovet. Usługi weterynaryjno-nekromantyczne" Autor: Joanna W. Gajzer Jest to książka, która zdecydowanie trafi do ulubionych w tym roku. Dosyć krótka, bo liczy 320 stron, chociaż ja słuchałam audiobooka i naprawdę zanim się obejrzałam a już kończyłam. 🙈 Także pozycja idealna, żeby przysiąść i przeczytać "na raz". Historia z gatunku cosy fantasy bym powiedziała. Obok ludzi na świecie żyją również elfy, centaury, fauny oraz... mnóstwo fantastycznych stworzeń! Florka zatrudniła się w lecznicy prowadzoną przez nieumarłą nekromantkę i od tego momentu musi się mierzyć z trudami leczenia nie tylko "zwykłych" pupili, ale także wszelkich nadnaturalnych zwierząt. Książka jest naprawdę spokojna, ale wciąga już od pierwszych stron (lub minut). Opowiada o codzienności w lecznicy bez pomijania brzydkich faktów. Opisuje rozwijającą się relację pomiędzy Florką a Bastionem, co uwielbiam! Są świetnymi przyjaciółmi i gorąco im kibicuję. Akcja tak naprawdę toczy się dosyć powoli, przedstawiając nam coraz to nowsze postacie i pacjentów, by ruszyć z kopyta pod koniec. Jednak nie jest to w żadnym wypadku minus. Dzisiaj pozycja obowiązkowa dla tych którzy w Japonii już byli i tych, którzy dopiero się tam wybierają. „Tokio. Opowieści z Dolnego Miasta” to reportaż Piotra Milewskiego, który zagłębia się w życie różnych mieszkańców Dolnego Miasta Tokio, obszaru historycznie zamieszkanego przez niższe klasy społeczne i zbudowanego na bagnach. Książka jest zbiorem opowieści o takich postaciach jak drukarz, producent tofu, fryzjer szefa yakuzy, wróżka, buddyjski ksiądz czy bezdomny, których łączy miejsce zamieszkania w tej części miasta. Jednym z głównych wątków książki jest historyczny podział Tokio na dwie odrębne części: Shitamachi (Dolne Miasto) i Yamanote (Górne Miasto). Podział ten sięga przełomu XVI i XVII wieku i odegrał znaczącą rolę w kształtowaniu dynamiki kulturalnej i społecznej miasta. Dolne Miasto było tradycyjnie obszarem bardziej tętniącym życiem i plebejskim, domem dla rzemieślników, kupców, tragarzy, artystów i kurtyzan, podczas gdy Górne Miasto było obszarem bardziej okazałym i uporządkowanym, zamieszkanym przez arystokrację i duchowieństwo buddyjskie. Mieszkańcy Dolnego Miasta przedstawieni są jako strażnicy wielowiekowych tradycji i pamięci. Pomimo modernizacji i zmian, jakie przeszło Tokio, mieszkańcy ci utrzymują więź z przeszłością, zachowując zwyczaje i ducha swojego historycznego otoczenia.
