Do you work your socks off during the week, manage to eat fairly well, get your exercise in, and then destress at the weekends?  Do you worry that your weekends are what slows down your overall progress in your fitness and health goals? You’re not alone. It’s normal to kick back at the weekends, it’s necessary, even. But I hear you, sometimes the 80/20 rule get’s skewed on the weekends, and we get discouraged. Turns out you can still apply basic habits that will continue to accelerate your progress on weekends, and still kick back and enjoy. Here are my top 6 favourites: 1. Slow down while eating: practice eating slowly, and you’ll more accurately stop eating when you’re full 2. Eat your protein and veggies first on your plate for fullness with lower calories 3. Carry a water bottle around with you and aim for 2.5+ litres per day 4. Drink an extra glass of water for every 2 alcoholic drinks  5. Walk more. Make it a social thing; after dinner, or Sunday morning with family, friends 6. Do an activity that is fun and spontaneous, decide on it spur of the moment Cardio, strength and nutrition are all tools to give you a greater quality of life, make sure you prioritize enjoying your weekends. Over the weekend I still get up, meditate and workout. While I am intentional during the week about moving through my morning, on the weekend I am thoughtful and I sit to enjoy the cup of coffee and breakfast. I give myself space to ponder and think. This allows my body and brain to escape from the hustle of the week before I begin the day. Throughout the day, I clean; laundry, vacuum, sweep, bathrooms, kitchen, and refrigerator. I also food prep. Why? So my week is not full of unnecessary decisions to make. We get to the weekend, too tired to cook AGAIN, a takeaway is EASIER and a glass of wine or a treat feels so good to relax 😍 I never going to tell you to stop that but how about doing that and feeling amazing after and not feeling guilty or reacting with ‘what’s the point’ and eating & drinking more?! I follow these 5 steps to help me enjoy weekends without beating myself up and still enjoying what I want. STILL HAVE THE GOODIES We shouldn’t sacrifice or feel guilty and enjoying what we love is part of the pleasure in life. Just compromise and pay attention to your portions. Have single serve instead of share size (minus the sharing). ALCOHOL SWAPS If, come Friday evening, a drink is your way of relaxing and switching off, pay attention to how much you’re having and what you’re choosing Swap 2/3 glasses for 1 and swap higher calorie wine for lower calories Gin & Slim MOVE MORE If you struggle during the week to workout or get your steps in, whilst you have more leisure time, make the most of it and get moving STRUCTURE Meal structure is just as important on weekends as the week. My top 5 tips to enjoy your weekend without losing progress! This isn’t an all of nothing thing here. Control what you can, let go of what you can’t. It really is that easy. Take a look at my top 5 tips to making it work for you:👇 1. Plan ahead if/when you can, but expect the unexpected. That’s where you do the best you can on the days you can control and move on when you can’t. 2. Stay active. It’s easy to want to take it easy on the weekends but do yourself a favor and move your body. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll be more likely to want to stick to your healthy choices when it comes to food after getting in that workout. 3. At the very least, make sure you prioritize protein. If you can’t control anything else, do your best to get plenty of protein in to help keep your fuller longer! 4. Moderation is your best friend. Don’t deprive yourself of anything you want, just don’t go overboard either. Enjoy the pizza or dessert without guilt! 5. Always listen to your body and what it’s telling you. If you’re hungry, eat. I didn’t want to go to the gym today. 👎🏾 I really didn’t. Hay fever is kicking my a#^ and going to the gym was the last thing I wanted to do. But I knew if I went I would feel so much better. Not the itchy eyes or the runny nose. No they still suck. Here’s my tip on not “blowing it” on the weekends…⬇️ Making a detailed plan. Plan 1: a plan of all the foods that surround you, your meals…etc. Plan 2: obstacles that will potentially arise and how to avoid or overcome them…because obstacles will come Plan 3: a plan to get out and about! Not staying you have to go to the gym but get your body moving in some way! Especially in a way you enjoy! And bonus points if it’s with those you love:) Make goals, details lists of foods, plan out your meals if you desire…make it as structured as possible. The more you face mentally before it happens the more you set yourself up to choose good! I give an example in this post. However try to make yours at detailed as possible. I think really breaking down your day step by step before it happens help set you up for greatness. You’re able to make better decisions about food because it’s not the first time you’re facing it! If you’ve already thought about it, you already have set a goal in your head and how to overcome any problems that may arise. Don’t forget no one’s perfect. Forgive yourself and love yourself no matter what happens. If you mess up, keep doing and trying to do your best. Just bc you made a mistake the whole day isn’t ruined. I’ve got 5️⃣ tips for you that are realistic and keep you moving forward… 1️⃣ Move Early Day: Getting movement over the weekend is crucial to your health goals. It keeps you consistent and ensures a little extra calorie burn (knowing our diet may be a little off). A good bout of exercise also puts you in a better mindset of fueling your body the rest of the day. 2️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drink your water and add your electrolytes. Typically weekends include life on the go, so ensure you have a water bottle ready to tote along with you. If not, be willing to stop and purchase a water bottle. This is when I level up for fancy weekend water options. 3️⃣ Choose to Indulge: The power of choice can really help progress you towards a sustainable lifestyle. I’m a big fan of not restricting foods, but ensuring you are enjoying them within reason and in social scenarios. So make some forward decisions on what/when/how much that will be and stick with your game plan. This will keep you mentally content with your choices and from a yummy in my tummy standpoint. 4️⃣ Focus on Sleep: Try to stick with your typical sleep routine and wake times. Consistency across the week is ideal. Listen to your body and be ok with leaning into a nap! 5️⃣ Get Outdoors: Spend time in the sun, woods, or dance in the rain. Being outdoors will help energize you physically and mentally. I like to plan at least 1 weekend adventure for my family like finding a new park or playground.
