. depression is my most consistent friend it shows up every year on my birthday and sits with me while I think about all the time lost looking for jobs and waiting for my friends to remember my milestones the way I remember theirs it's this rumination an obsession with why everything feels off is it me is it them is it the way nothing seems to change even while it's always changing it's feeling stuck and rushed overlooked and on display it's being too vulnerable and also numb overstimulated and disinterested sleeping too much or too little and never feeling rested being bone tired like the marrow snuck out in the middle of the night and crawled into bed with someone more deserving it's the way my shadow bends in the light so that I have no idea what my body really looks like it's avoiding mirrors or not recognizing myself when I dare to look to notice I'm one year older and no where near happier . . . . . . . #depression #mentalhealth #writingprompt #poetry #freeverse #poem #microstory #microfiction #writewithus #writemore #readmore #writingcommunity

Songe à la douceur by @clementinebleue (5⭐️) A true modern love story. Clémence Beauvais invites us to follow Tatiana, 25 years old, who meets again by chance the boy she was madly in love with 10 years ago. He changed. Changed a lot actually. She did too. With writing in free verse full of accuracy and grip, the author makes us experience this little piece of life, of a love story between these two beings who can’t seem to let go of one another and yet are so different. Interspersed with commentary from the author, who narrates the story as herself being a character in the book, we follow the doubts, the emotions, the desires of Tatiana and Eugène who rediscover themselves. Singular, this book is in my opinion a masterpiece. Having a weakness for this style of writing, Clémentine Beauvais could well climb into my list of favorites! No ending that I imagined while reading this book satisfied me, and yet, the real ending is, in my opinion, really fair. I believe uncertainty could be the companion of dreams set into motion. . .and a meaningless pathway can sometimes bridge the gap between hope and opportunity. Longgg rant coming up: As a trans guy, my relationship with masculinity, and particularly toxic masculinity is in some ways unique. I’m privileged in that I haven’t grown up in an environment that suppresses my emotional expression in relation to some perceived toxic version of masculinity, but I have for sure seen and experienced my fair share of it to know how absolutely full of bs it is. Men are so often told they aren’t allowed to express any negative emotion besides anger, because any more vulnerable emotion is deemed feminine, and therefore “weak” and emasculating. Which really just goes to show how tied toxic masculinity and misogyny is. The patriarchy is harmful to everyone, albeit in different ways and in different degrees. But I think it’s important for men to be able to acknowledge their own humanity, before they are able to do any real critical thinking about their place in the patriarchy, so here’s my rant about it. To any other guy out there: feel your feelings, cry those tears, it doesn’t make you any less of a man or human. Find a more peaceful understanding of masculinity, that isn’t so entrenched in misogyny, and *that* is real strength. When people say "you were robbed," in the context of things like the Tony Awards, there is no good response. If you say "I agree," you sound like an ungrateful brat. If you say "no, we weren't," you sound like a disingenuous liar. If you say "thank you," it feels like a bizarre combination of the two, because you know the person saying it means well, but the phrase itself isn't exactly complimentary so it feels weird to take it that way. People usually say stuff like "awards are nice, but really it's an honor just to be here," but I'm not gonna say that either. I DO feel that way, but you know and I know that no matter who says it, and how earnest their tone is, it never quite sounds like the whole truth. This is my attempt at writing something that sounds slightly closer to the whole truth. Maybe it's cringe. But it's my own original cringe and I'm sticking to it. For everybody else whose name is and is not on that list, allow me to lovingly plagiarize @lin_manuel's tweet from 2015 (and boy does it hit a thousand times deeper in our 2024 post-shutdown industry): "Congrats to everybody nominated. I'm honored beyond words to be named the poet of the month at The Wise Owl - E-Magazine. When Neenaji and I discussed these poems, I never thought this would be outcome. Today is an important and very special day for me! Exactly one year ago, my first book was internationally released, and I'm still in awe at the very endeavor. The enthusiasm and positivity with which readers have reached out and communicated has been an honor and privilege to receive! Writing [art in general] is a necessity; but to be published is no small luxury, and I am beyond grateful for the world of books and its many wonders. Competition in the industry is extreme, and to know that there are those who made the time for my little project when there is a surfeit to choose from is not lost on me. People ask me “When will an e-book version be available?” I have waited because I feel like this is the kind of book you need to hold in your hands. I like the size, the feel of the paper, the muted colors and simplicity of the cover, the warm cream-colored pages, the negative space for writing in the margins, the streamline font, the one-life-lesson-at-a-time format.
