I really didn't want to run this morning, but I also knew I would change my mind as soon as I got there. I did it ! I’ve turned a corner. . With the approval of my most excellent physio @colessportstherapy, I have started to add a bit of distance, just a 1km morsel to my existing 10k efforts a few days ago when I finished my tendinitis recovery plan. . My running since then has seen my return to rough terrain but my feet and ankles have been a tad grumpy after many weeks on easier terrain. I have therefore split my return towards a normal routine two ways : 1- retrain my feet and ankles staying below 10k on rough terrain. 2- rebuild distance from 10km on easy terrain. . The next step will be to add distance to rough trails. I’m nearing this time. My feet and ankles are much happier. . So, what about today’s run ? 11km on Llwybr Mawddach, 7km of which were against headwind. I am very pleased with the fact that it was a continuous run (does retrieving your cap from a puddle count as stopping ?) . It feels amazing to be free to choose my next run, to explore. I have plans. If only it could stop raining ! THE GREAT THING ABOUT RUNNING IN BEND is that the trails are padded with pine needles. 🌲 - I was just a kid on the Mountain View High School cross country team. I joined cross country to be around cute boys and because my older sister was on the team, and because my Dad ran for Nike professionally, so people, including me, expected me to run, too. The cross country team was unquestionably the group to join for social excitement: There were 4 busses of cougar runners from our school heading to every meet! - When I was a teen harrier, rocking a messy bun and a pair of Nike Pegasus, I had no aspirations to run when I was 40 years old. I didn’t think I’d live that long! I run more miles now than I ever have. This week I get to run around in Bend again. The Winter Series 2024 has come to an end. Consisting of a 5K, 10K, 15K, & 20K races 1 month apart. We could not have asked for better weather through out this series! @coyoteuglyracing 50K Beat my goal of 14:30/mi avg pace. Wet and muddy, like mushy slick muddy. Lots of stream crossings meant wet feet for the duration. I may have face planted in the second large stream crossing. 🥶🤦🏻♂️ The Aid stations were excellent and the volunteers were outstanding. Didn’t catch the name of the volunteer at the mile 15 aid station who saved the day by cleaning and drying my fogged up glasses so I was actually able to see for the second half of the race, she was a blessing @humbletrailrunner please tell her I said so Also 10 out of 10 recommend @mulberrygapadvbasecamp this place is awesome, the location, the staff, the food, the accommodations all A+ glad I drove up the day before stayed the night.

RUN ACROSS THE YEARS: It’s a running festival in Phoenix, a last person standing event, like a dance-a-thon during the Great Depression, a real patience game for a type of runner who likes… running with no clear finish in sight. You’ll have to ask @lisemarie2013 about this the next time you see her—I mean the next time you catch her NOT running. 🏃🏿♀️ - She completed 9 hours and 20 minutes, or roughly a 50k, What she ran is incredible! It was a loop. It was a mental battle that few of us know specifically, yet all of us runners understand in general. I’d always said I needed to go up Cader Idris, since I live here and since I stare at it all day from my windows. . ⛰️ I never imagined that our club run tonight would take us up the start of Pony Path then turn a corner into the wilderness following sheep tracks. . 🌅 we got up there in time for the sunset and what a beautiful sky it was ! I was mesmerised by the vastness and the beauty of the landscape. Then I turned around and found myself right in front of Llyn y Gadair. Then shortly afterward we passed Llyn Gafr (first photo). . 🏃🏻♀️ The “run” was more a hike because of the difficulty of the terrain. . 😊 I loved it nonetheless. Not the result I wanted but not one I can really complain about. A few weeks back I decided last minute to sign up to Race To The Stones 100k always with the idea to compete and win. However, it was a reminder that you can’t blag an ultra, especially the longer ish stuff. My training is always consistent and I’m always in pretty good shape, but I hadn’t really prepared for this in terms of regular long runs and also the fact that it is a really flat course. I never run flat routes in training, and after 45 miles my legs were just completely shot. I thought I could just rock up and put in a performance even though the last time I finished a race of more than 50k was years ago. Doesn’t work like that unfortunately! A good kick up the backside and reminder that you get what you deserve in running. Put in the work and you’ll get the result you want, get cocky and you’ll fall flat in your face! The first 38 miles went pretty much to plan. I ran nice and easy letting the front runners shoot off knowing I would catch them later. I worked my way into 4th place about 4 mins back from 2nd/3rd place however, after 45 miles my legs fell to pieces and I knew my race was done. When it got tough, i didn’t really have the fight in me on the day to push through it. It happens! Overtrained maybe, undertrained maybe, not too sure, but a good training session for whatever comes next. 45 miles in a little over 6 hours. There’s always a positive! We have a joke in my family that the Chilterns are jinxed for me. I think I’ve run about 6 ultras up there and never finished one! Which is irritating! So I will be back to put that right at some point with a bit more focus and specific training. I’ve lacked motivation for a good few years now in ultrarunning but this result seems to have ignited the fire to do something I never do which is some speed work on the flats. It’s the last piece of the puzzle I think for my running which I’m actually quite excited about! Merrill’s Mile 24 hour recap To the friends who want me to run again next year, Sunday I said no way, Monday the same, yesterday still no, but today… today it’s a maybe. I went in with a goal of 100 miles, but only managed 86 miles and a 7th place finish. Hottest day we’ve had this year, humidity was 91% to start the day, temps on the track reached triple digits, and around 7pm there was a deluge of rain complete with 40mph wind gusts, marble sized hail, and lightning. Mistakes were made, such as not taking any rest breaks longer than a few minutes until the forced break to prevent the tent from becoming a kite during the storm, too few changes of socks and shoes were packed resulting in wet, shriveled feet, that led to blisters. There were also wins. The biggest win being the torn right hamstring giving zero issues🤞🏻and hopefully that trend continues. A close second, I finally won the war of my chronic electrolyte imbalance when running past 20 miles, which has plagued me with cramping, swelling, and occasional vomiting during every ultra I’ve run thus far. And last but not least, I was able to fuel consistently throughout the race without feeling sick to my stomach. (Thank you @ultra.running.nutrition) A big THANK YOU! To @dumassevents and all the volunteers for putting together a great event as always! One of my best friends messaged me on lap 30 to say, “Proud of you but there is know way in hell that can be enjoyable” I responded that I did not go into this expecting enjoyment. This was a test of both physical and mental endurance. As @theunlazyrunner likes to say, a way to challenge my limits rather than limit my challenges. No this was not about enjoyment.
