Holding healthy boundaries is a mental health and well-being phrase that seems to get passed around a lot lately, but what does it actually mean? When we are encouraged to hold healthy boundaries we are actively taking measures to implement limits which safeguard our mental and emotional well-being. These safeguards can prevent burnout, stress, frustration, and resentment between ourselves, loved ones, friends and colleagues. One measure we might take to practice holding healthy boundaries is by making slight changes in our communication approach. For instance, if we often find that we have a hard time saying “no” and agree to tasks that require more energy or resources than we can realistically support, using communication to hold a healthy boundary may be beneficial. For most people, doing a drastic shift from typically saying “yes” to saying “no” can be difficult. Nothing can prepare you for being a spectator at an ultramarathon. I experienced every single emotion this weekend during Dan’s first 47+ mile ultramarathon in the heatwave. From anxiety to sadness, and worry to pure elation, relief and happiness. It was so tough to keep emotions high while also being deeply worried for his welfare. If you haven’t experienced it before or supported someone through an event like this, you won’t know what it feels like. But it isn’t for the faint-hearted. Dan had prepared for months for this event and it meant so much to him. After months of rigorous routine, dedication and constant ups and downs… he smashed it and arrived safely at the finish line after dark. Thank goodness! I can’t even put into words how proud I am of him. He is superhuman, and he inspires me so much. To anyone who showed up to support him - thank you. To anyone who sent their good luck wishes and well wishes - thank you. To anyone who supported him from day one - thank you so much. A special shoutout to @em_l_clarke, my mum, my bro and my dad for keeping me sane from the early hours of Saturday morning. Dan, you are awe-inspiring and I love you dearly. It’s an honour to be able to support you and stand by you ❤️

Let’s talk hyper-independence: Defined: Hyper-independence refers to individual attempts to be fully independent in all things, even when it is not helpful to do so or when they truly need help or support from others. (verywellmind.com) We usually become hyper-independent due to past trauma experiences. Example: you learned to distrust others (even the people who were supposed to keep you safe) so you only feel safe & comfortable relying on yourself. Example: your needs (physically, emotionally, mentally, etc.) were often neglected growing up, so you’ve learned that the only one you can depend on is yourself. In terms of treatment: trauma-informed therapy is typically the way to go. It’s a lot of processing and unpacking and relearning. It’s hard - but it’s not impossible. If it’s too painful, remove their social media and photos until it’s not triggering. 🌇 . 2. Write or journal about it. There is a ton of research supporting the positive effects of releasing your thoughts or writing a letter you never send. (If you can’t afford talk therapy, this is an assignment lots of therapists may recommend) 📝 . 3. Find a phrase to release them. It can feel too “woo woo” for me, but saying something like “that is the past, I don’t live there anymore” or “i am moving on from you.”💬 . 4. Talk to someone. I think talk therapy can help everyone, but if you’re not ready or it isn’t covered for you, ask a friend or mental health support group, “I’m struggling to let go of _______, would you have the capacity to help me process it a little bit?” 🗣️ . 5. Accept that you can miss someone and not have them in your life. We are allowed to have several different emotions at the same time. 💙 . You know that I weekly post a "Do-more-of-what-you-always-wanted-to-do"- post and usually it's about food I baked or made. Don't worry, I'll share a nice cake with you nevertheless this week, but today's Do-more-of-what-you-always-wanted-to-do" - post is about my new piercing. Last weekend I finally got my bridge pierced. A piercing I've always wanted to have. And before someone asks - on a scale from 1-10 it was pain wise a 1. Didn't hurt at all. From all the piercings I got it's the least painful. And before I know start worrying and saying things like what if it rejects or gets infected and I'll loose it, I'll keep it at that.
