📚🕵️♀️It’s #christiefest week and this month’s book is one of my favourite Poirot books! 🥸📚 Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie is unusual among my favourites list as I don’t think it’s necessarily one of her very best works, but I can’t help but have a sentimental attachment to a book where a dog plays a role in the mystery! I would describe Bob the dog as one of my favourite characters in Christie who only appear in one story. I have two copies of the book, and love the facsimile edition which features a photo of Agatha Christie’s own beloved pet, Peter. Christie dedicated this book to Peter too. In memory of the wonderful Janelle @janellehoos_toofondofbooks these are the books I would like to read this week. @rainey_day_reads and @libraries_and_labradors suggested that we read books that remind us of Janelle this week, in her honour. #janellathon Here are the books I chose, and why they remind me of Janelle. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. Janelle had such a wonderful knowledge of Christie, and her special map of all the connections between characters was fascinating. I wish I had talked to her even more about it. Roger Ackroyd was one of her top favourites by the author I most associated with Janelle. The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie. The graphic novel is just a placeholder here as I know Janelle didn’t like it as much as the real thing. If I can get hold of a copy this week, perhaps on audio, I would love to revisit this one, which reminds me of Janelle at #christiefest where I feel grateful I got to share so much Christie with her. I loved Janelle’s enthusiasm for this book and its main character. I will forever associate this book with her. I was lucky enough to buddy read with Janelle three times, even though the first time I DNFed the book. Janelle was lovely about that and we went on to read The Woods by Harlan Coben and Bulldog Drummond. We both loved the Harlan Coben so I’ve chosen one of two remaining Harlan Coben books on my shelf. Missing You seemed liked the most appropriate title. The Singing Sands by Josephine Tey because Janelle commented that I should read Josephine Tey. In A House of Lies by Ian Rankin because we shared a love of this book series and it reminds me of Janelle’s recent trip to Edinburgh. We talked through comments about how she was going to look for the Rebus locations while there and make a video. Unseen by Karin Slaughter because Janelle had recently caught up on the Will Trent book series and I know she liked them a lot. An Honourable Thief by Douglas Skelton because Janelle loved Historical Mysteries. I won’t make it through all of these books this week, but these are my possibilities. I will be thinking of Janelle regardless of when I get to these books. 💛🕵️♀️

It’s that time of the month again!… #ChristieFest May’s Pick is a Tommy and Tuppence novel. Set during the early years of the Second World War it is full of spies, treachery and war time intrigue. Tommy and his wife, Tuppence, are visited by a gentleman who has an offer that can’t be refused to the aging amateur sleuths… Well.. To Tommy, at least. Tuppence’s services aren’t required this time. She won’t let that stop her, however! Kidnapping, spies and a sense of foreboding follow and the story unfolds… N or M by Agatha Christie.
Si mi relectura de Styles, el primer Poirot, me había sorprendido, con este segundo encuentro la cosa se templa: sigo sin recordar "quién lo hizo" y disfrutando enormemente del tipo de planteamiento y desarrollo por más acostumbrado que esté a ellos. Pero también he encontrado el caso un poco alambicado y demasiado dependiente de una cadena de casualidades para que me resulte del todo redondo. Siempre hay que tener una cierta generosidad para aceptar algunos ingredientes de estas novelas pero aquí hay cosas que entran un poco en el terreno de la improvisación por parte de la buena de Agatha y hacen que las conclusiones resulten más esotéricas de lo habitual. Con Hastings vemos una cierta evolución y a pesar de que demuestra más confianza en Poirot se comporta (por amor, por eso se supone que debemos excusarlo) de maneras francamente absurdas y lo que es peor, peligrosas para la marcha de la investigación. Por no hablar que el romance se sustenta en poco más o menos que un par de encuentros fortuitos que no deben de sumar más que unas horas. It’s Christiefest week! This means I will be reading Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie. This is the final Miss Marple book. Agatha Christie actually wrote this one during the Second World War along with Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case, and it was put away until after her death. Published posthumously in 1976, Sleeping Murder involves Marple helping a young couple with their mystery involving the wife’s strange feelings of deja vu in their new house. I remember this being my favourite Marple first time around, and I read it on holiday in Torquay as I believe part of it is set there. My copy has seen better days and I’m pretty sure all the pages will fall out when I read it! Also pictured is my Greenway bookmark from my visit there (on the same holiday where I read this book, in 2013). It’s that time again, where crochet Poirot appears to tell everyone that it’s #christiefest at the weekend and this month we are reading Death on the Nile! I’m also reading this for #readchristie2022 as it’s the February pick for that too. This is my first reread of Death on the Nile and so far I love it! Agatha Christie really knows how to build up to a murder and crank up the tension and that really shows in this one. Plus we get to see the Nile and many of the wonders Poirot and the cast of characters visit on their trip. I’m sorry, I can’t talk now, I’m stuck in a snow drift on the Orient Express with a dead man, a murderer on the loose and the one and only Hercule Poirot. 🚂❄️🔪🧐 This month’s #christiefest is the first Agatha Christie I ever read, way back in 2006; the book that started me on a lifelong addiction to murder mysteries and the “little grey cells” of M. Poirot: Murder on the Orient Express. It’s so exciting to reread it after all this time. In the intervening years I’ve seen two adaptations of it (David Suchet’s amazing Poirot episode is one of the absolute best adaptations, Kenneth Branagh’s bizarre action film not so much) and I’ve read the graphic novel.
