[32] I feel like I’ve been talking about this one with so many people in real life because I kept learning so much I didn’t know. I absolutely know a lot about MLK Jr. as a symbol - but this was really about him as a man because, “In hallowing Martin Luther King Jr., we have hollowed him.” [96%] Our simplified celebration of King comes at a cost and Eig argues that we should embrace far more complex ideas than are taught in classrooms today. “We have turned him into this safe symbol, but he was real. A complicated, radical, flawed, human man.” [97%] Indeed, this #2024PulitzerPrizeWinner takes the broad view of King’s life - starting with his grandparents and parents and all through his early life and education with the primary focus of the book on the thirteen years between King leading the 1955 Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott and his untimely death. The sources here include newly released FBI files, telephone recordings and interviews (YIKES, J. Edgar Hoover!), and tons of interviews with people who knew King personally. This definitely moved my own understanding of King beyond the one-dimensional symbol although: “It was Stanley Levenson who reminded King that, “A man didn’t have to be perfect to be the perfect leader at a moment of opportunity.” [61%] I thought this was fantastic on audio - 21 hours flew by and narrator #DionGraham has a great cadence for the parts of King’s speeches included in the text. 📖 “Ella Baker advised the young activists and helped connect them to older activists. But she also warned the students not to be manipulated or dominated by the movement’s established leaders. This inclination toward “group-centered leadership” she said rather than towards “leader centered-group pattern of organization” was refreshing indeed to those of the older group who bear the scars of the battle, the frustrations and the disillusionment that come when the prophetic leader turns out to have heavy feet of clay.” [39%] ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #KingALife #JonathanEig #History #Biography #NonFictionOf2023 #Bookstagram #BookReview #Audiobook

🎧 New Ep: Narrator #DionGraham, with his ability to tap into a wide variety of voices, is the right pick for @AceAtkins’s blues-heavy novel first published in 1998. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten discuss Dion’s skill at voicing this blues-infused noir mystery. Nick Travers is a former pro football player turned blues historian at Tulane University in Louisiana. He’s sent to find a missing music professor, and the mission gets messy. Graham’s stellar narration helps listeners keep the many characters straight, going beyond different voices and pacing to vary entire dialects. A first-rate performance by a first-rate narrator. @recordedbooks Thank you for listening to our new episodes every week, every M-F on @applepodcasts or wherever you like to listen. #audiofilemagazine #behindthemic #audiofilebehindthemicpodcast #audiobooks #audiobooksofinstagram #bookstagram #publishingpodcast #bookspodcast #loveaudiobooks #narratorsofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #goldenvoice #earphonesaward #audiofile #tolistento #tolistentolist #audiobookrecs #audiobookrecommendations #bookstagram #LinkInBio

This book was W I L D. So well-written! So much unnecessary suffering and loss of life. My husband and I listened to the audiobook and we love the narrator (Dion Graham, who narrated Evicted as well), so that added to the experience. ⚓️ We’re back again with #GR15in15! ⚓️ Last week, we braved the winner of History & Biography category: 🛳️ #TheWager - a Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder - by David Grann (@david_grann). I listened to the audiobook 🎧 narrated by #DionGraham ❓ What was the last historical non-fiction book you read? 😁 Would you read this one, if you haven’t? ➡️ Swipe to see the Readalong Schedule. We’re starting In the Lives of Puppets tomorrow. DM me if you want to join! 💌 Booksleeve is from @devoured_pages_booksleeves - use INDOORGIRL10 to save! 📚 My Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/4) On 28th January 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth brought thirty emaciated men, barely alive, ashore. They were survivors of His Majesty’s ship The Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. They were greeted as heroes. Then, six months later, another, even more decrepit, craft landed with just three castaways and they had a very different story to tell. As accusations of treachery and murder flew, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death—for whomever the court found guilty could hang. What a captivating historical story! I don’t usually read this type of book, but I’m glad that I picked this up. This was proof that real -life stories could be as dramatic as fictional ones! The first two parts of the book were a bit slow for me, but part three picked up the pace, and I was hooked from then on. With the amount of ‘characters’ involved, it was initially challenging to remember who was who, but it worked out in the end. I listened to the audiobook and I thought the narration was well done. To me, this was a mash between Castaway x Survivor. I can imagine how big this story was in its time - especially with the media frenzy, and the fact that TV wasn’t an entertainment choice yet! If only all historical textbooks could be written in the style of this one! 📚 Use my affiliate link to buy this book: https://amzn.to/3wYp5EO (also, see my story highlight)

Coleman Hill is a biomythography (a new-to-me word) about two families with complicated relationships, that migrate from the South to New Jersey in 1916. Upon arrival, they learn it isn’t necessarily “the promised land” and work to establish their new lives there. The story spans several decades and generations, and the family members experience both hardship and hurt. ⁣ ⁣ I listened to most of Coleman Hill on audio, it’s hard to pass on Bahni Turpin and Dion Graham narrating! I appreciated the family tree in the physical book, which not only has a great cover but also high quality pages and photos throughout. I also appreciated reading Kim Coleman Foote’s author note re: how this story came to be, blending facts and fiction together — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ #ColemanHill #KimColemanFoote #Biomythography #debutNovel #FamilySaga #GreatMigration #SJPLit #ZandoProjects #bookreview #audiobook #BahniTurpin #DionGraham #readersofig #igreads

🎧 New Ep: #DionGraham narrates this biography of playwright and poet August Wilson from Patti Hartigan. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten discuss how Graham excels at performing both as storyteller and actor, for this biography contains not only narrative but also passages from some of his plays. His rich voice carries the biography along nicely, but it is when he recites lines from plays such as FENCES and quotations from figures in Wilson’s past that Graham really shines. The audiobook is an enlightening look at Wilson’s life and the forces and people that shaped his plays. @Simon.Audio Thank you for listening to our new episodes every week, every M-F on @applepodcasts or wherever you like to listen. #audiofilemagazine #behindthemic #audiofilebehindthemicpodcast #audiobooks #audiobooksofinstagram #bookstagram #publishingpodcast #bookspodcast #loveaudiobooks #narratorsofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #goldenvoice #earphonesaward #audiofile #tolistento #tolistentolist #audiobookrecs #audiobookrecommendations #bookstagram #LinkInBio

“Our simplified celebration of King comes at a cost. It saps the strength of his philosophical and intellectual contributions. It undercuts his power to inspire change . . . Today, his words might help us make our way through these troubled times, but only if we actually read them; only if we embrace the complicated King, the flawed King, the human King, the radical King; only if we see and hear him clearly again, as America saw and heard him once before.” You know that feeling when you read a book with characters so well written and developed that you miss them after you’ve finished? Characters that feel truly like companions, even friends? I LOVE when that happens. But I think it’s even more impressive when a writer can do that with non-fiction, with real people, when they bring history to life. When I finished Jonathan Eig’s ‘King: A Life’, I truly felt like I knew Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and I was moved by the strong sense of loss I felt when his story ended. This comprehensive biography of Dr. King is compelling from start to finish. I can’t even fathom the amount of research that went into writing it. The book presents Dr. King in all his multi-faceted humanity, detailing both his strengths and shortcomings. I thought I knew quite a bit about Dr. King going into it, but this book opened my eyes in so many ways. I’m in awe of his dedication to the principle of non-violence, even when it alienated him from those who had supported him, especially toward the end of his life. One of the biggest takeaways from the book that I hadn’t expected was how it made me feel about Coretta Scott King. This book captures her courage, intelligence, and resilience so beautifully. I’m so grateful this book gives the credit due to her. I’m honestly not sure Dr. King’s impact on history would’ve been what it was without her influence. I listened to this book on audio — it was over twenty hours long, but it never felt like it. The narration by Dion Graham is exceptional, and he did such an incredible job giving voice to Dr. King’s words. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It is both thought-provoking and inspiring, just as Dr. King was.

MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH.  Nic Stone's author's note in this book is so important for people to read. The above line is in there, and she includes a Mental Health Advocate Agreement. I am guilty of saying that things are crazy or people are acting crazy. I personally need to do better and not use that term. But back to this fantastic book! Publisher's Summary: The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin delivers a gripping romance about two teens: a certified genius living with a diagnosed mental disorder and a politician's son who is running from his own addiction and grief. Don't miss this gut punch of a novel about mental health, loss, and discovering you are worthy of love. Scars exist to remind us of what we’ve survived.   DETACHED Since Shelbi enrolled at Windward Academy as a senior and won’t be there very long, she hasn’t bothered making friends. What her classmates don’t know about her can’t be used to hurt her—you know, like it did at her last school.   WASTED Andy Criddle is not okay. At all. He’s had far too much to drink. Again. Which is bad. And things are about to get worse.   When Shelbi sees Andy at his lowest, she can relate. So she doesn’t resist reaching out. And there’s no doubt their connection has them both seeing stars . . . but the closer they get, the more the past threatens to pull their universes apart. I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by the author and Dion Graham. Thank you @prhaudio for this #gifted audiobook. 🎧 🧠 👁️ 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 👁️ 🧠🎧 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 Narrated by Dion Graham Random House Audio Release date: 16 November 2021 Dave Eggers’ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺, sequel to 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘦, dives deeper into the unsettling influence of big tech on society. In this dystopian vision of the near future, The Circle merges with an e-commerce giant to form The Every - a behemoth with a stranglehold on individuals’ lives, privacy, and consumer behavior. The protagonist, Delaney Wells, works to dismantle The Every from within, yet finds herself entangled in the company’s pervasive dominance. As Delaney’s fight unfolds, the novel satirically portrays a world with negligible personal freedom and privacy, where human connection and secrecy give way to a veneer of transparency and improvement. Eggers highlights the dangerous trajectory of unchecked technological expansion and the concentration of corporate power. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 serves as a cautionary exploration of tech’s capacity to better human life, contrasting sharply with its potential for abuse, surveillance, and the suppression of individual dissent. It challenges readers to ponder the escalating conflict between the technology-driven collective good and the eroding sanctity of personal liberty and identity. Dion Graham has narrated over 120 audiobooks in various genres. His rich, emotive voice and flawless character accents add to the listening experience of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺. QOTD: Are you interested in novels which include themes of technology, surveillance, and dystopian futures? Or, do you have any favourite audiobook narrators?

The 2024 Audie nominations are in! I am a finalist in 3 categories! I was so excited to narrate The Quest of The Silver Fleece, it was the first fiction I'd read by W.E.B. Dubois and I personally asked that this book be submitted. What a beautiful story! The other two are multi voice, and both Coleman Hill (co-narrated with the inimitable Dion Graham), and One Blood are family sagas of triumph over extreme adversity, poverty and racism. The specific type of adversity experienced by Black folks in America, highlighting our brilliant resiliency. Finished listening to "Poverty, By America" by Matthew Desmond, narrated by Dion Graham. This book dives into the issue of poverty in the United States and why there is more poverty in America than any other developed nation. Basically, the financially well-off exploit poor people through low-wages, housing regulations, low-opportunity neighbourhoods, and evading their fair share of taxes. Desmond goes into detail and uses pertinent studies with specific numbers to back up his passionate argument for poverty abolition. He goes beyond merely identifying the issue and offers plausible solutions and calls to action. This is a obviously a complicated issue and Desmond did well to present the issue to people like me who haven't done much personal research on the topic beforehand. I kept thinking about "The Ones Who Walk From Omelas", the hugely influential short story by Ursula K. Le Guin, while I was listening to this. Recommended for people who enjoy political writing, poverty aboliitionism, and compelling non-fiction. 3.5/5 #bookrecommendations #bookreview #booklover #bookstagram #books #povertybyamerica #matthewdesmond #nonfiction #audiobook #diongraham

Sometimes when a full moon comes around, I think about this passage from But Beautiful: A Book About Jazz by Geoff Dyer. It’s a scene in which Lester Young is ailing in a hotel room, waiting “for the phone to ring, expecting to hear someone break the news to him that he had died in his sleep.” At night, Lester drinks and listens to Sinatra records, standing by the window and watching the New York street. On this particular night, the moon becomes his neighbor. (Swipe for a brilliant reading of this passage by audiobook narrator Dion Graham). —— He stacked records on the turntable and walked to the window, watching the low moon slip behind an abandoned building. The interior walls had been knocked down and within a few minutes he could see the moon clear through the broken windows at the front of the building. It was framed so perfectly by the window that it seemed as if the moon was actually in the building: a mottled silver planet trapped in a brick universe. As he continued watching it moved from the window as slowly as a fish—only to reappear again in another window a few minutes later, roaming slowly around the empty house, gazing out of each window as it went.

A thorough and detailed profile of Martin Luther King Jr., Jonathan Eig’s level of research is truly impressive and I learned a lot about MLK from this biography that I didn’t know before. ⁣ ⁣ I listened to most of this on audio — Once again, Dion Graham did an excellent job, highlighting why he is one of my favorite narrators. ⁣ ⁣ From the epilogue of King, Eig shares the following in closing and I’ve been thinking about this since I finished the book earlier this week. It’s especially worth thought and consideration today, a day dedicated to honoring MLK: ⁣ ⁣ “Our simplified celebration of King comes at a cost. It saps the strength of his philosophical and intellectual contributions. It undercuts his power to inspire change. Even after Americans elected a Black man as president and after that president, Barack Obama, placed a bust of King in the Oval Office, the nation remains racked with racism, ethno-nationalism, cultural division, residential and educational segregation, economic inequality, violence, and a fading sense of hope that government, or anyone, will ever fix those problems.⁣ ⁣ Where do we go from here? In spite of the way America treated him, King still had faith when he asked that question. Today, his words might help us make our way through these troubled times, but only if we actually read them; only if we embrace the complicated King, the flawed King, the human King, the radical King; only if we see and hear him clearly again, as America saw and heard him once before.⁣ ⁣ “Our very survival," he wrote, "depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change."⁣ ⁣ SWIPE ⬅️ Though currently closed for rehabilitation, I highly recommend visiting the birth home of MLK if/ when you find yourself in Atlanta. ⁣ ⁣ #King #KingALife #JonathanEig #MartinLutherKingJr #MLK #FSGbooks #biography #audiobook #DionGraham #bookreview #readersofinstagram

{We all impose some coherence, some meaning, on the chaotic events of our existence. We rummage through the raw images of our memories, selecting, burnishing, erasing. We emerge as the heroes of our stories, allowing us to live with what we have done, or haven't done. But these men believed their very lives depended on the stories they told. If they failed to provide a convincing tale, they could be secured to a ship's yard-arm, and hanged. ⎈ During the age of sail, when wind-powered vessels were the only bridge across the vast oceans, nautical language was so pervasive that it was adopted by those on terra firma. To “toe the line” derives from when boys on a ship were forced to stand still for inspection with their toes on a deck seam. To “pipe down” was the boatswain’s whistle for everyone to be quiet at night, and “piping hot” was his call for meals. A “scuttlebutt” was a water cask around which the seamen gossiped while waiting for their rations. A ship was “three sheets to the wind” when the lines to the sails broke and the vessel pitched drunkenly out of control. To “turn a blind eye” became a popular expression after Vice-Admiral Nelson deliberately placed his telescope against his blind eye to ignore his superior’s signal flag to retreat. ⎈ The British navy was known for its ability to coalesce fractious individuals into what Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson called "a band of brothers," but the Wager had an unusual number of unwilling and troublesome crewmen. Midshipman Byron could not yet know for certain the true nature lurking inside his fellow seamen, or even himself. A long, dangerous voyage inexorably exposed one's hidden soul.} A dense but fascinating account of bravery, adventure, and the complexities of the human spirit. If I didn't know better I'd say this was the true story that later inspired Paradise Lost. #TheWager #DavidGrann #ATaleOfShipwreckMutinyAndMurder #Adultnonfiction #history #shipwreck #survival #DionGraham #audiobook #bookstagram

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐𝔽𝕀𝕍𝔼 𝕊𝕋𝔸ℝ ℝ𝔼𝕍𝕀𝔼𝕎⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "In those schools named for King, in almost every school in America, King's life and lessons are often smoothed and polished beyond recognition. Young people hear his dream of brotherhood and his wish to have children be judged by the content of their character, but not his call for fundamental change in the nation's character, not his cry to the end of the triple evils of materialism, militarism and racism." - KING: A Life Excellently researched and very well written biography of King's life by @joneig King's childhood, family life, his mission, his passion, his work and his human-ness. This is such a well done piece of literature. There is so much here you probably don't know about him, and will make you think about MLK Day differently. It's disconcertingly similar to things STILL happening today in our country. "The tragic truth is that discrimination in employment is not only dominant throughout the south, But is shamefully widespread in the North. Particularly in great urban communities which often pride themselves as liberal and progressive centers and government and economics." - MLK I went back and forth between the audio and the physical book, which is BIG, clocking in at over 500 pages, audio is about 20 hours, but it doesn't matter because it's all necessary. The audio is narrated superbly by Dion Graham, whose voice sounds almost eerily identical to MLK when he is speaking in his voice. In less than a month, @cadwellturnbull will officially return with WE ARE THE CRISIS, the second book in The Convergence Saga and the sequel to @nytimes' Best Book of 2021 NO GODS, NO MONSTERS! In this sequel, it's three years after the Monster Massacre, and members of Rebecca's old wolf pack have begun to go missing without a trace. Now humans and monsters clash as civil rights collide with preternatural forces. "Turnbull packs a lot of plot and character development...to explore complex issues of prejudice, intersectionality, and personal identity, as well as the scars left by the darker parts of one's past...Rich, brilliant, and often sad, because this contemporary fantasy pulls no punches; blood will regretfully be spilled." - @kirkus_reviews Launching November 7 in Hardcover, eBook, and audiobook (narrated by Dion Graham), make sure to preorder your copy using the 🔗 in our bio!

The Wager is appropriately subtitled “A tale of shipwreck, mutiny and murder.” The book follows the Wager, a British vessel that left England in 1740 and ultimately wrecked. The surviving men salvaged what they could of the ship to set sail again and 2 years later in 1742, arrived at the Brazil coastline. The men were starving and barely hanging on. ⁣ ⁣ Months later, another ship in questionable condition arrived in Chile, with 3 men who had a different story to share. Disputes between the two groups of men arose with allegations of mutiny and murder, and a court martial was assigned to determine the truth about what happened. ⁣ ⁣ The Wager isn’t the type of book I’m typically drawn to, however, I found this story fascinating. It’s amazing any men survived for so long in an unknown (to them) land, with the limited resources in the 1700s. ⁣ ⁣ David Grann’s thorough research, which includes details from journal entries of some of the men, is impressive! The physical book includes maps and photos though I listened to most of The Wager on audio. As always, Dion Graham did an excellent job narrating this story — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ #TheWager #DavidGrann #nonfictionbooks #2023releases #DoubledayBooks #audiobook #DionGraham #bookreview #readersofinstagram #MoreBooksLessAlgorithm #igreads

Crook Manifesto is the continuation of Ray Carney’s story from Harlem Shuffle. The story picks up in the early 1970s — Carney still owns his furniture store but isn’t involved in the same “transactions” he used to be. When his daughter wants Jackson 5 tickets, he feels like he may not have a choice though. ⁣ ⁣ The story continues with Pepper in 1973, who’s finding that it’s not as easy to put together a crew for a job as it once was. Pepper might need to get creative now. In part 3 of the story, set in 1976, Harlem is burning, literally, and corruption is high across NY. ⁣ ⁣ The time and place in Crook Manifesto are well-done, I felt like I was there. I listened to this audiobook, narrated by one of my favorites, Dion Graham. As with Harlem Shuffle, the audio enhanced my enjoyment of the story. If Colson Whitehead continues this Harlem series, I’ll continue reading/ listening — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ #CrookManifesto #ColsonWhitehead #DoubledayBooks #bookseries #historicalFiction #HarlemShuffle #bookreview #audiobook #audiobookreview #DionGraham #2023releases #readersofig #igreads

📚 Review - Sooley I picked this book as I wanted an audiobook for my walks and I love the narrator Dion Graham. I hadn’t read a John Grisham book in years and years, and was expecting a political thriller. This however, was a book about basketball. Sooley is about Samuel Sooleymon (Sooley) who comes to America from South Sudan for a basketball tournament. He ends up getting a scholarship and stays the the states while war breaks out in his hometown. The book tells the story of his college career as well as jumps back to South Sudan to talk about what happened to his family. The best I can say about this book is that it was fine. There was nothing wrong with it, but the story just never pulled me in. I thought there could be more depth put into the story with his family, and really I would say there wasn’t much action in the book until 85% in. I absolutely love Dion Graham’s voice, so he definitely kept me engaged in the story. I’m not sure I would have continued the book if I had been reading the physical copy. Overall, this book was ok. There were good characters, it was an interesting premise, the writing was good and the ending was very interesting, but it was just too long with not enough going on for me - 3/5 stars QOTD - Is there an author you used to read all the time, but haven’t in a while? #whatjennreads #bookreview #bookstagram #bookblog #booklover #bookrecommendations #toberead #bookishcanadians #canadareads #readinglife #bookworm #idratherbereading #ontarioreader #canadianbookstagrammer #bookaholic #addictedtoreading #instareads #bookreader #readinglist #toberead #librarylover #libraryholds #sooley #johngrisham #audiobooks #diongraham #diongrahamnarrator #basketballbooks #sportsbooks

💫💫💫 Book Review 💫💫💫 King: A Life by @joneig ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was PHENOMENAL! I would never call myself a historian or a Martin Luther King, Jr. enthusiast - what I knew of the man was that we share a birthday (thank you for giving me a day off on-or-near my birthday every year!) and whatever I learned in high school twenty years ago. I was concerned this would be a bit too dry, especially given its length; but, that concern was completely unwarranted! This book is incredibly well researched, I believe Jonathon Eig spent upwards of 6yrs researching and writing this book, and the details of MLK, Jr's life are woven in such a way that you want to know more. I found myself not wanting to put this book down and staying up late to keep listening (it was an audiobook.) I was very surprised by how radical MLK, Jr. was for his time - peaceful, but radical. Even though I knew he was a minister, I was surprised by the place religion/ethics/morals held in his life and how that shaped his rise with civil rights and his downfall with the Vietname War. This book also made me want to read more on his wife, Coretta Scott King, and learn more about her activism and how she was able to "stand by her man" despite his philandering ways. The other big thing that stood out to me was that the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's centers into the narrative so much, but it surprised my by how similar it was to current events. There were so many passages that I felt could be used verbatim to describe events that have occurred in the last few years and to describe the ideologies/rationalization that drives people to maintain the status quo. King: A Life is definitely in my top 5 for the year so far! I enjoyed this book so much that I bought the physical copy after listening to the audiobook. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ audiobook narration by #diongraham #bookreview #books #bookstagram #mlkjr #mlk #martinlutherking #civilrights #audiobook #biography #jonathaneig

Re-imagined Antigone, but set it in the future and make it dystopian. Veronica Roth delivered with "Arch-Conspirator" blending the bones of the play with the new twists. I really enjoyed the differences so go in cold. Narrated by Dion Graham and January LaVoy, damn fine work. ✨Poverty, By America ✨ “This is who we are: the richest country on earth, with more poverty than any other advanced democracy.” Matthew Desmond’s new book lays out the specifics of how those of us not living in poverty in America are benefiting from its persistence. To understand America is to understand how this country is built on systemic oppression hidden behind the myth that those who have more deserve it. This book demands that the reader look at how they benefit and reconsider the language that is used to talk about those living in poverty. This book is a compelling call for poverty abolition. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by one of my favorite readers, Dion Graham. Coming in at under 6 hours, this is well worth your time. At night all blood is black är skriven av den franske författaren David Diop. ”I am innocent and guilty. I am the beginning and the end. I am the creator and the destroyer. I am double.”

Listen, I will not be putting my friend #DionGraham out of work EVER (nor would I want to, geez!), but this feedback from an early listener of WONDERLAND just about knocked me out of my chair. If you're into thrillers set in creepy retro amusement parks (Clown Museum included), with a strong, ballsy female lead hunting a serial killer, this is your jam. http://bit.ly/3o6dezO Thank you to bestselling superstar @jenniferhillierbooks, producer @katyrobit @macmillan.audio and engineers Irving Gadoury and Sal Barone! ***** After a personal tragedy and professional scandal forces homicide detective Vanessa Castro out of Seattle, she takes a new job in Seaside, Washington, determined to make a fresh start for herself and her family. The small beach town, best known for its popular amusement park, Wonderland, seems like the perfect place to raise her young son and teenage daughter. But it's not that easy starting over, especially as the town's new Deputy Chief of Police. When a dead body turns up at the park her first day on the job, and then a teenage Wonder Worker goes missing, Vanessa's investigation is met with resistance. After all, Wonderland is the largest amusement park in the Pacific Northwest, attracting tourists from all over the country and providing thousands of jobs for the locals. A scandal that hurts the park hurts the town, but the more questions Vanessa asks, the more questions arise . . . especially when she learns that the missing teenage boy is the not the first park employee to disappear. The deeper she goes, the more she begins to suspect that the terrifying rumors about Wonderland's dark past might actually be true. Surrounded by secrets, lies, and corruption at the highest levels, Vanessa's family is now in the center of a serial killer's twisted game . . . and there's nobody she can trust but herself. . . . . . #humanvoice #macmillanaudio #jenniferhillier #jenniferhillierbooks #thrillerbook #thrillerreads #thrillerbookaddicts #narratorlife #womeninvo #narrators #audiobooknarrator #eunicewongnarration
