Congratulations on your 1st Job. Thomas attends an adult day provision 4 days a week for young people with additional needs. He loves his time there. He gets to learn life skills, Access the community & take part in various activities. For a little while now he has spent each Monday helping to support other people within the provision as part of his work experience. He has really thrived at UET over the last 2 years since joining them from his amazing sen college. So much so our boy was offered his 1st little job doing 4 hours a week as a support worker within his provision We are all very aware not to overwhelm him or push him too much too soon. Both physically & emotionally. So doing 2 hours on 2 days a week is perfect for him, He feels so safe, comfortable, supported & happy at UET. Happy Monday people, "The World is Yours" Little bit of a different post on this sunny Monday morning, on both days this weekend on separate occassions we met two extremely kind ladies who went out of their way to recognise Brody's differences and include him in their tasks he wanted to be apart of, whilst both working, bearing in mind we have never met either of these Ladies before, they probably noticed me first, a very overwhelmed looking Mum as we were having a "Brody Day" both stopped what they were doing and gave us their time. So this weekend Brody has been a click and collect helper in Dunelm and worked a check out in Aldi on Sunday! It gave me a good sense of wholesomeness that there really are truly lovely people out there. *School based trauma* This week ended last night with P opening up a LOT about her time at school (mainstream). She talks about it quite a bit, but she really opened up. She told me she had 2 mean teachers who didn't get her. She said 1 LSA told her she had to make eye contact to show she was listening and she just couldn't do it, and that upset her. She told me how when she was upset, her teacher would ask why, and she would say she missed me, and so she was sent to the sensory corner, which helped her calm down. She told me it was so loud in the classroom it hurt. She told me how they were forced to play outside even when it was raining. She often worried about her cuddly getting wet. She said she forgot her cuddly at playtime once and wasn't allowed back in the classroom to get it. She said there was a really loud fire alarm (which was a practice), but she wasn't allowed to get her coat or cuddly and was so worried it might get burned in the fire. She hadn't understood that there was no fire. She told me she didn't really have a friend, a best friend like the others all did. She said that she liked & played with F and C, but they weren't "best friends," and sometimes C was "naughty" and would get told off. She asked me why I didn't ask her to be in a different class in reception as the teacher wasn't kind and was only kind if someone had hurt themselves and had a plaster. She also said that in y1, her 2 teachers were very different and that 1 was kind, and 1 wasn't (just shouted) and that perhaps that's because the kind one understood her more. She went on to say how she hoped for year 2 if she was in school, she would have had a kind teacher. She said she sometimes misses school but doesn't want to go back there. I then talked to her about maybe one day in a few years time being able to go to a different school with people that would understand her and in much smaller class sizes. It absolutely breaks my heart hearing how school felt to her 💔 I just wish I'd done something sooner rather than believe the professionals who chose to gaslight me! But here we are healing, and we will heal as long as it takes my girl. Mummy's got you 😘

This week's rundown! P managed clothes, but not so much shoes in and out she wore them but mostly not. I'm wondering if this will be a new thing she can't tolerate. It's also become apparent she can't handle labels on clothes. She's never been able to tell me before but has asked me to cut labels out everyday this week. She was thrilled to be able to get in the hot tub again but was instantly bored as I'm really not a fan. So when her cousin's came over it was the best day ever! So much laughter it was just a joy to listen to. "King" (from The Owl House) soft toy arrived and as we often experience there was an anticlimax for P. She gets so excited waiting for it to arrive inevitably it's not quite as exciting when it does. Plus she pointed out she likes her cuddly toys to be perfect and the colours weren't quite right a horn wasn't right etc. She notices every-thing! Once that had passed she fell in love with him. Wonder how long that will last!! It was a particularly difficult week for social interactions and boredom. P is struggling more and more to be around other children outside of her immediate friendship group and honestly I don't know how to help her 💔 😔 she didn't even want to go to swimming lessons this week which she usually loves (i'll do a separate post on that). Then there's been the boredom...or at least that's what she says "I'm bored" so I plan things, I suggest things to do at home or going out, but she doesn't want to do them or know what she does want to do. I really don't know how to navigate that. I have booked SEN things which she would enjoy like messy play, playgroups, I've offered to take her to parks, super sense, swimming allsorts and she just isn't interested in anything. At home she has so many things and I've offered to do/play with them with her but still no go. Having a child who is able to access school safely is a privilege. For a lot of neurodivergent children the education system is anything but safe. On the surface this may appear to be a ridiculous and exaggerated statement. If that is your view point then you are one of the privileged. One of the people who didn’t find school deeply traumatic or whose children haven’t suffered within the system. For countless parents this statement is their reality. For the parents who have been let down by the systems that exist solely to support children and families, the parents who have been blamed for their child’s school refusal, had to leave their jobs because their child is unable to attend an education setting, who have had to go to tribunal to fight to have their children’s needs met, for the parents who have had to pick up the pieces after the education system has chewed up their child (and them) and spat them out again, for the parents who have no idea what they are meant to do next, the parents who have to watch their child suffer over and over again because no one is listening, for the parents who have the heartbreak of hearing about how their child was restrained by multiple adults and then locked inside an isolation room, for the parents who have to hear all the ways their child was subjected to ridicule or shame by the adults who were supposed to be taking care of them. For those parents this statement is anything but ridiculous. I see you, I know how heartbreaking it is, I know how exhausting both mentally and physically it is, I know how scared and alone you feel. •••Update••• I’ve been meaning to do this post for a while & what better day to get around to it than Undiagnosed Children’s Day. This is where Toby sits now, under SWAN -Syndrome Without a Name. Toby has obvious developmental Delays. An MRI done around 1yrs old showed brain abnormalities probably due to a genetic cause but all the many tests & bloods since then have come back normal. Pinned posts * When we got his MRI results and were referred to Oxford Neurology * & When we got in the last of the final genetic results with still no answers But I get a few questions of where we’re at and what’s next so I hope this clears it up. It was a hard blow to hear nothing, again, had been found. I was desperate for answers for many reasons. A diagnosis ment we might know more what the future looks like. Would provide a better medical approach for anything that might help him. Would help us know if any future pregnancy would be likely to be affected by the same condition. It means I could just say a name of SOMETHING when people / Doctors ask. However, the positive I’m focusing on is, no diagnosis means literally anything is possible for his future. We have no idea what level and independence Toby will get too which yes scares the shit out of me but he also gives me great hope that he can achieve far more than ‘expected’. The last 18months of progress compared to his first 18months of life are night & day 🙌🏻. Toby’s bloods will stay in a lab and be tested every so often & one day we might even get a call saying he does now have a diagnosis as science improves. I have shared a news interview on my FB which I liked but can’t share here but worth a watch if you have time. But for now, our big boy, Tobes. Living as the most gorgeous SWAN I ever did see. Doing life his way. Being his content, happy little self… Okay maybe a bit more will powered & stroppy these days but we love seeing all these developments🥰. We've been blessed with some beautiful weather here in Scotland this week 🌞 The other day we spent time at our local walled garden where J enjoyed using the wheelbarrow to collect water and dump it out. Like many other #asd children, he gravitates towards water, whether to look at it or to play with it. We are starting to find days out a little tricky due to his sensory processing difficulties, the bees flying around buzzing, things touching his skin and I think the sun annoys him too! So there has been moments of elopement which have abruptly ended our time outside. This seems appropriate as she is watching toy story! Kinda a proud mama post 💖 I am such a proud mummy tonight. We've had further health updates for Evie which I will share over the next few weeks but no matter what she faces she does it with a smile on her face and determination! Not only has she had a growth spurt but a huge leap in her development, speaking more and engaging in basic conversation, dealing with new environments like a pro, more independence in trying to do more for herself and is staying in her class with her peers a lot more and dealing with the transitions really well. This is probably the best holiday we've been on with Leo so far! Only took us 5 and a half years to be able to go on a semi enjoyable holiday as a family... 🤪 Ok, it's still not as relaxing for us as it would be for typical families, since he still requires full attention most of the time, but there's lots of novelty to keep him entertained but with the fresh air and nature around us helping him regulate. And lots of pool time, obviously, although that was disappointing yesterday because they wouldn't let Leo go on the Grand Cascade ride wearing his armbands and buoyancy aid; being autistic and anxious about this unknown ride to begin with, he didn't do well with being told to remove the aids, he felt unsafe + the sudden demand was too much, and 20 minutes of waiting for nothing because the staff member just said "that's the rule". And you can't go on the ride on your own in the rubber dinghy, so all 3 of us missed out which caused me to be a bit grumpy 😞 I worked hard to get over it, tried to reason with myself, but I couldn't help but feel angry and resentful towards the staff member, @centerparcsuk for this nonsense rule (the ride isn't deep, why couldn't Leo have worn his armbands?) towards Leo even though I know he can't help being how he is, and towards life in general that we are still missing out on a lot of things we could enjoy here at CP if it was just my husband and me, like the spa, night swimming, long forest walks etc. Sometimes I feel like it's WORSE if I have a taste of nice things!
