Today, I found a couch at my favorite department store: the sidewalk. I’d been wanting a reading chair for some time, and I was dreading the whole furniture hunting at Goodwill et cetera. Perfect timing, and it’s in top notch condition too. I found it just an hour or so after it was placed on the sidewalk with a “Free” sign on the cushion by it’s ex-owner, my next door neighbor. I saw it after he left for work, ignored it, went shopping and running errands for my work, and when I came back a few hours later it was still there. So now it’s in my living room, and I don’t even want to work anymore. It’s too comfortable. The sun coming through the window keeping me warm. I got a million things to do that need to happen at some time yesterday, and whatever, I’m listening to Willie Nelson… … grabbed a few books of poems from my shelf (mid-day chillax session before going back to work because I decided that I need not stress too much, what will happen will happen, and we will do our very best to deal with whatever happens straight on, honestly, with a smile… and I know what I’m doing, I know what I’m doing, I know… life is chill… breath in, breath out…) Hope your Tuesday is as good as mine. I liked this collection! These poems are about girlhood, and capture it so well it is sometimes uncomfortable. “I’m a good girl, bad girl, dream girl, sad girl girl next door sunbathing in the driveway i wanna be them all at once, i wanna be all the girls I’ve ever loved.” In her author’s note Olivia Gatwood explains how this book of poetry came about- “this is a book of poems about true crime. It is also a book of poems about the many small violences a person can withstand. It is a book about memory and girlhood.” Intertwining her relationships with the media obsession on true crime, Gatwood reflects on the innate fear that she, and most other women, develop simply due to living in a sensationalized culture where violence against women, from assault to murder, is treated with the same fan-fare comparable to a sports game or a new TV episode from your favorite show. The poetry speaks frankly and eloquently about the various types of relationships she’s had and witnessed, and how living as a woman is revolved around survival. It’s a dark and raw read, yet at the same time a unique and powerful one, offering a complicated relationship that mulls over wanting to protect ourselves by watching/listening/seeing the misfortune of others. I used to think indifferently about poetry after one too many dry, unrelateable high school poetry lessons until 2 years ago when I stumbled upon Kate Baer’s What Kind of Woman. I instantly found myself falling in love with her words and the world of contemporary poetry in itself. The feeling of pure comfort and warmth after snuggling up with a new collection is entirely unmatched. Poetry has a way of warming you to the core while simultaneously broadening your mind. Not to mention the cathartic feeling of having all of your emotions and inner battles put into words and expressed on paper is a feeling unlike any other. If you don't know, a manic pixie dream girl is a trope where a love interest who lives a bit outside of normal society causes the main character to develop as a character. The criticism of the trope, however, is that the manic pixie dream girl is often herself an undeveloped character created only to serve the main character as an eccentric, oddball, or even unattainable lover. Gatwood's poem is a joy to read and drops with sarcasm. And it's funny. At first. At some point after making fun of this character with their strange delights Gateood humanizes the dream girl and criticizes the audience for not caring about her once she is more than her quirks. Prompt: Give a side character or an underdeveloped character a voice. What do they see that the other characters miss? How do they view the action? What does the audience not understand about their inner world? Holy new book day! I aimed to buy two books of poetry today, so I went to @upupbookspdx in Portland, because their poetry selection is diverse and fresh. I thumbed through every book of poetry I didn’t know. I bought five. Noor Hindi - Dear God, Dear Bones, Dear Yellow - poems by a Palestinian-American poet. Destiny O. Birdsong - Negotiations. Decided to get this one after reading “When T decides he’ll put on the grizzly bear / suit already limp with someone else’s / sweat, and chase the girls around the fairgrounds …” Sold. Robert Wood Lynn - How to Maintain Eye Contact. Decided to get this after seeing a poem titled “In Praise of Lying to Children Specifically.” Joshua Bennett - The Sobbing School - Got this when I read “My father showed up to school that day dressed up / as a man with a son with a rage problem” Olivia Gatwood - Life of the Party. Got my orders from my very favorite bookstore, @belmontbookspdx Joseph Earl Thomas - Sink. Queer Black geek memoir. Bryan Washington - Lot: Stories. First sentence: “Roberto was brown and his people lived next door so of course I went over on weekends.” Chrissy King: The Body Liberation Project - How Understanding Racism and Diet Culture Helps Cultivate Joy and Build Collective Freedom. And then the mail came, bringing two free books I’d requested. Score! Alejandro Varela - The People Who Report More Stress Szilvia Molnar - The Nursery: A Novel. The author was born in Budapest & raised in Sweden. I think this is going to be a realistic novel about isolation in the time after having a newborn - I’m in.

Appreciation post for my one true poet @oliviagatwood . My copy of LOP is so beyond disgusting due to rereads that I’m actually kind of proud (it has been 4 years since the purchase mind you & I’m defs a spine breaker- write in the margins- spit on it from crying typa gal). I don’t think I’ve ever been swallowed by a book before - or by words before until reading Gatwood. So, I had to do the only real teen girl thing to do when I obsess over something: get it inked on me permanently lol. I got this tattoo a few months ago in ‘honours’ of getting half way through my ‘honours’ thesis. Yes it centres around Gatwood, gender, authenticity, true crime and transmedia.
