I saw a copy of Life of the Party at the lovely @lostcitybooks and was able to interlibrary loan a copy, as well as Gatwood’s spellbinding debut. Both are their own unique tour de force’s, but Life of the Party is something special. Not only does it e corporate poems from NABF, but it tries to pry into our obsessions with true crime and serial killers. Haywood explores her younger experiences in New Mexico, queerness, desire, fear, patriarchy, and all of the systems and structures that lead to the violence against women that true crime often exploits. These are powerful, demanding, but ultimately thoughtful collections that feel especially prescient today. Water I Won’t Touch by @kayleb_rae - Tore through this poetry collection by non-binary poet Kaylin Rae Candrilli, following their journey through love, trauma, and emotions rising from their top surgery. There were many poems in this book that hit me hard, mainly the poems about queer love. This book is beautiful in how it depicts growing up/struggling as queer in rural PA, and explores themes of water and liquid in its connection to queerness. Night Bus by Zuo Ma - An epic and utterly surreal graphic novel intersecting the authors life and work, and what it means when those two things unexpectedly coalesce. 🕵🏻♀️Who loves true crime and poetry?🪔 Actually, not me - but this gem of a book got me curious. ✨ This is what happened: Last autumn, I picked this up in a local Café which also sells books and though I am not able to consume true crime like a normal person (because I’d get scared for the rest of my life, and my anxiety level has been pretty high already these past months), I wasn't sure whether I liked it. My curiosity won over my doubt and I started browsing through the book, reading a few lines here and there and I really liked what I read. And I think I had just finished an assignment and thought I’d deserved a treat. So, I went ahead and bought it. 📖 Now proper (mini-)review-content: I fell in love with the author's words and the idea behind it. How Gatwood turned her hate-love relationship of true crime and stood next to her anxiety by producing this collection of heartbreaking, sometimes terrifying and shocking poems is just next level. 📖 I am really getting into poetry lately, and with this collection I liked to read them over a large time period. I’ve read in it pretty consistently since autumn and limited myself to only read 1-2 poems a day, because I wanted the impressions I got from this book to last. ⬇️ Has anyone read this already or heard of it? (trigger warning) in the alley behind my parents house, you tell me you need one blow job a day to be happy and i disappear from oncoming traffic into your lap. you say some people need coffee, i need this. and i think to myself, it’s simple, really. i do plenty of things once a day. shower, set my alarm, call my father to tell him i am safe what is love if not being needed, and unzipping your throat, if not letting the rats underneath the sink live, because it is the middle of winter? when you say, now you mean here and tomorrow here will be your bedroom floor a gas station parking lot, the dumpster behind my high school soon, the velvet of being desired begins to harden and i sculpt a new, doughy mantra to pass the time i think, it takes three weeks to form a habit which means twenty one days until it is as simple as brushing my teeth. like any girl good at her job, i will teach my tastebuds to cover their ears develop some hack to tame the gag and share it with all of my friends and, i do, of course i do, but your body becomes immune to the gift i can tell because you stopped flinching and stayed mad even after i was finished i know, i know i got lazy, i’m sorry i can’t bind my mouth into something tighter so the needs mutate into a tumor with a face and teeth and hands and soon i am swallowing your pillow tending to the rug burn on my palms and knees, i think, twenty one more days until i master the art of separating brain from body until i am the girl in the magician’s box whose upper torso rolls away from her hips with ease and i do, of course i do, but you know the drill, the need, the immunity, the tumor, the habit, and soon, you want it twice you want it four times you want it in the middle of the night but i am asleep but you want it so i wake up watch this i learn how to not wake up while its happening i teach myself to lock the door of my dreams and stay there until morning i detach like a classroom skeleton piece by piece i share the trick with the curious girl in geometry. asleep? she says. and stops laughing. yes. i say. isn’t that the best part about it? - Olivia Gatwood

Speaking of which, poetry is a great place to start. I absolutely adore poetry - both reading and writing. Maybe because it’s the closest versions of writing to music, which will always be my first love, but there is something about poetry that makes me want to hold on and connect. Olivia Gatwood is a writer, performer, and educator. She refers to her poems as being about “girlhood,” the messy but beautiful tangle of everything from period stains to relationships. She has published two books of poetry, “New American Best Friend” and “Life of the Party.” Olivia is constantly touring and performing, with her videos of poems “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” and “Ode to my B*tch Face” gaining massive popularity on YouTube. “When I Say We Are All Teenage Girls” was one of the first poems of Olivia’s that I heard. Even when I struggle through a poem, reading and rereading every stanza looking for a deeper meaning, nothing compares to the feeling of satisfaction i have once i finish it. This collection was a combination of everything I love: accessible yet lyrical prose, issues of race and gender, violence against women, and ruminations on true crime and what it means to “enjoy” it as a woman. These poems are so personal, and yet it’s so easy to find something that reflects your own fears and experiences. Needless to say, after becoming obsessed with Olivia Gatwood and stalking all her socials I can honestly say I have the biggest crush on her. truly a queen. In summary, love loVE LOVE!

Book Review: Life of the Party by Olivia Gatwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Some books sneak in and become your all time favorites when you least expect them to. I picked up this poetry collection after it was listed as a Goodreads Choice Nominee. I had no idea this would be an examination of the romanticization of violence against women through poetry. She examines the fear of violence that women have, including herself, and how that changes the way we must look at the world. Her poetry is incredible and haunting, and will stick with you a long time after you turn the last page. This is my all time favorite poetry collection, and I immediately bought my own copy when I finished my library one. I love that I started reading this book across from my 8 year old who is writing one of her own. . I totally agree, @oliviagatwood. I think that is the stake that poetry has in ANY conversation: to help us feel less alone in the dark. . I've been so honored in the past two years to have seen @ellomelissa , @sierrademulder , @badass_sab perform live, and to have talked with you all.
