(Which was quite fitting as this novel is all about a doppelganger!) 😁 "Brat Farrar" by Josephine Tey was a cracking read. It was published in 1949 and takes place after WW2. The Ashby family have fallen on challenging times. Aunt Bee has become the guardian of four children after her brother and sister-in-law died tragically in a plane crash. There was a fifth child called Patrick who disappeared soon after their deaths and left what appeared to be a suicide note. With the Latchetts Estate to run and with money tight, Aunt Bee uses the family stable to run a stud farm, train horses and offer riding lessons (@pony.books if you haven't read this book, you really must! 🐎🏇🏼). ~ But turmoil ensues when a young man turns up eight years later claiming to be Patrick, and ready to claim Latchetts and his inheritance as the eldest son. The reader discovers very early on that this man is an imposter called Brat Farrar who shares an uncanny likeness to Patrick. He has been coached and prepped on every detail of Patrick's early life by a conniving individual who was a childhood friend of the family and who spots an opportunity for financial gain. ~ The story is so cleverly played out as you quickly warm to Brat and want him to succeed in his subterfuge. In this way it reminds me of Daphne du Maurier's "The Scapegoat" where the imposter is actually a likeable man who is beneficial addition to a family. Will Brat succeed in his endeavour? What will happen if the Ashby family discovers the truth? And what really happened to Patrick all those years ago? If you're looking for a mystery novel full of suspense and intrigue (and horses!) I was completely hooked from the first page of "The Teacher"! 😱 The suspense and twists had me guessing at every turn, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. However, I do have one small complaint. While I appreciated the unpredictable nature of the story, I wish there had been a disclaimer at the beginning for sensitive topics. The portrayal of child molestation made me uncomfortable, and a warning would have been helpful. 📚🎙️Book Review🎙️📚 (22/75) TL;DR- A well known podcaster, Bodie Kane, returns to her old high school to teach a course in podcasting and in doing so returns to the tragedy that marred her past. When Bodie attended the school as a kid, her roommate, Thalia, was murdered. The school janitor, Omar, was convicted of the crime, but all these years later Bodie wonders if she held the key to the truth of what happened that night. This review is probably going to piss a few people off because of all the great reviews I’ve read about it, but I had to DNF this one. I got 225 pages into a 450 page book and I was still waiting for the hook. It took me much longer to get through 225 pages than usual because this book just dragged. At no point in the first half was I interested. My full review (for the first half) will be on Goodreads, but I just can not persevere, sorry to those of you that are big fans of this one! DNF

📖| 4.5⭐️ I picked this one up on KU and i had a really hard time figuring out whether it deserved 5 stars or not! The Serpent’s Brige is a suspense thriller novel by S.Z. Estavillo, set to be released in August 2024, about Detective Nazario, an alcoholic haunted by her father’s unsolved murder. Detective Nazario investigates a mystery involving Mexican immigrants and a serial killer in Los Angeles. S.Z. Estavillo’s book is a must-read for those who love crime and raises important social issues. Estavillo’s meticulous research and deft use of characterization add layers of complexity to the narrative, making it an engaging read from start to finish. I really enjoyed that this thriller also had a b-story romance that didn’t overpower the thriller genre. Blake Huxley and Anaya Nazario’s chemistry is great. But, so is the romance between Eric and the pastor’s wife, Millie Ann Goodwin. I liked the affair because it made the Millie Ann’s character arc. This was a fast-paced page-turner. I loved that it had 3 POVs and each were strong women. It had a relevant immigration theme that hooked me. 🎉 PUB DAY REVIEW 🎉 Are you excited to read a book that published today? Happy US Pub Day to Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth! This suspense novel is a quick read that kept me engaged throughout, and I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by Jessica Clarke. Content warning: girls experience childhood trauma in the foster care system. Set in Australia (of course), this is told in dual time (Then and Now) with rotating points of view. Jessica, Norah, and Alicia bonded as “sisters” when each was placed into foster care with Miss Fairchild at Wild Meadows farm. Twenty-five years later, a tragic discovery is made at the farm, and local law enforcement requires the women to return for questioning. As the investigation moved forward, long-held secrets are revealed. It was interesting to meet the women as adults and learn how their relationships developed in childhood. I wonder if the author was in a dark place in life as she wrote this because all of the characters seemed more ‘troubled’ than in her previous novels I’ve enjoyed. As a storm rages, the resort is cut off from the rest of the world. There is no electricity, no cell service, and the road is blocked. Soon there is another death and it seems many of the guests, including Ellery, may be harboring secrets. She teams up with two other guests to try to solve the murders. This book started out with a lot of possibilities and the setting seemed perfect for a thriller, but the story seemed to get bogged down as it went on. It just didn’t engage me and there seemed to be some disconnect in some of the plot lines. There are other readers who I’m sure will really like this story but it fell a bit flat for me. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨? 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. It’s any mother’s worst nightmare: a child that goes missing. Sive is on a London tube platform when her six- and two-year-old daughters get on a train before the doors close, and the train leaves, separating the children from their mother. She’s frantic. Her husband, Aaron is called and the police begin to search. Then, a call from a good Samaritan. The children have been found at another tube station. When Sive and Aaron arrive though, only Bea, the toddler is there. There is no sign whatsoever of Faye and the man who found Bea swears he never saw another little girl. The search begins in earnest. Did Faye wander off? Or, did someone take her? Aaron is a high-powered defence lawyer – could he have made enemies of dodgy characters? As time passes, and we oscillate between the present and what happened during the weekend preceding the disappearance, it becomes clear: everybody is lying. I think this story had real potential and I enjoyed the various twists and turns. I just didn’t find it nearly as tense as the two other books I’ve read by this author. What also put me off was the epilogue-style ending that had one or two paragraphs about each character and what happened to them after the main events. It was just all too neat. I wouldn’t tell anyone not to read this book – it’s certainly entertaining but just a little forgettable. I’d highly recommend ‘All Her Fault’ by the same author, which is brilliant. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ “The truth may be painful, but it’s the lies that kill.” - Never Lie by Frieda McFadden” At first, I was skeptical about diving into “Never Lie” by Frieda McFadden. I didn’t think it would be my cup of tea. But oh boy, was I wrong! This book took me on a rollercoaster ride of suspense, deception, and jaw-dropping. And that twist! I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say it completely blew my mind. It was unexpected, yet it made perfect sense in hindsight. It’s the kind of twist that makes you want to go back and re-read the entire book just to see how you missed the clues. This is what I was looking for in a mystery! By the time I finished “Never Lie,” I was left with a sense of awe and a newfound appreciation for the hype surrounding it. It’s a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat read that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. If you’re looking for a book that will keep you guessing and leave you breathless, look no further than “Never Lie.” You won’t be disappointed!
