Review 📖 ~ Back in 16th century Florence ✨️. The Darkest Sin, by D.V. Bishop, is the second book in the Cesare Aldo saga, set in Medici Italy. In this historical thriller, we encounter a new mystery: a murder in a convent. While Cesare has to give an answer to this unusual crime, his protégé Strocchi seeks to solve the disappearance of another investigator, unaware that the answer to it could have important consequences. Like the first book, this novel was fast-paced, atmospheric and very entertaining. The author is very skilled at giving information of the period without making the narrative dense or boring. Learning about life in the Florentine convents of the 16th century was very interesting, as was learning about the hierarchy of power and security in Florence at the time. About the mystery in this book, I liked the approach better than the first book's mystery, (probably because it was a "locked-room" mystery, which I generally tend to like better). Alternating the convent crime with Strocchi's investigation made the reading more dynamic. I also liked that this book had more depth than the first one: we got to see more about the characters' past and their evolution, and their interactions seemed more natural. However, there were some things that didn't convince me: I was very confused by the names of the characters in the convent and it was very difficult to follow their interactions. Moreover, some of the characters in the first book appeared very little (Orvieto 🥺) and the ending disappointed me a bit (although I think it is a logical and well executed conclusion!). Lastly, I've read some people saying that you can read this book without reading the first in the series (City of Vengeance). I really think you need to start with the first book because a lot of plot details in The Darkest Sin go hand in hand with things that happen in City of Vengeance. In short, and despite some details, I loved it and I'm already looking forward to reading the third book of this saga! 😍 My rate: ☀️☀️☀️☀️✨️ 4.75/5 #historicalfictionbooks #historicalthrillers #thedarkestsin #bookstagram #bookreview #bookingonsunshine

#bookreview I loved this follow up to The City of Vengeance, and Cesare Aldo is quickly becoming one of my favourite characters in historical fiction at the moment. And that’s saying a lot, because I read quite a bit of historical fiction!! This story picks up not long after book 1, and Aldo is called to a convent that has had reports of an intruder. This isn’t a harmonious convent, though. There are opposing ideas on what sort of convent it should be (with some very unchristian nuns!), and it has it’s share of secrets. Meanwhile, Constable Carlo Strocchi has taken his new wife home to introduce her to his mother, and he happens to stumble across the remains of a rather unpopular former officer of the city’s criminal court. And it looks as though he has been murdered. I love this blend of historical fact and fiction: the Medici’s and the roles of nuns (to be enclosed or not?), the inequalities in Italian society at the time, women’s roles and lack of power, the structure of authority and how the catholic church ruled supreme (and not particularly morally). Aldo is the bastard son of a wealthy man, and when he is ‘reunited’ with his family, he’s not exactly welcomed back with open arms. He does however meet his niece, and she is far more accepting of him, even if it is, I think, a way of getting her own way!! This is such an atmospheric read, and is thoroughly addictive. There are enough twists, turns and threats to Aldo’s life to make it very difficult to put the book down! So is Aldo a threat to my love of Giordano Bruno or Matthew Shardlake? Err, nope, but he’s joining them - and if you like either of these, you’ll love Aldo Cesare! #bookstagram #booklove #bookaddict #instareads #bookishlove #bookworm #igbooks #bookaholic #bibliophile #lovebooks #booksbooksbooks #historicalfiction #recommendedreads #fivestarread #dvbishop #thedarkestsin #clares_little_book_obsession

"Bishop’s skill in these [Cesare Aldo] novels lies in distilling a complicated plot into an engaging story with wonderful historical detail, a great sense of place and time, real characters who pop from the page, and more than enough twists and turns to keep readers absolutely enthralled." I have just finished reading an advanced copy of the third book in this series, Ritual of Fire, and it is just as good as the first two. I love good historical/crime fiction and D V Bishop has easily become one of my favourites alongside C J Sansom and Ken Follett. The main character of Cesare Aldo, an officer of 16th Century Florence’s criminal court, is cleverly imagined and the period is well researched. The best characters in stories are ones that make the reader care about them and their lives and D V Bishop certainly does that brilliantly. Cesare’s personal struggles throughout the books are the perfect back drop to the crimes and issues of the time. I highly recommend this extremely addictive series! @macmillanaus @panmacmillan @cesarealdo #cityofvengeance #thedarkestsin #ritualoffire #dvbishop #florence #medici #historicalcrimefiction #historicalmystery #bookstagram #bookshelf #books #bookstagrammer #bookshelf #lovebooks #reading #historicalfiction #cesarealdoseries #cesarealdo

Also last week I joined the #blogtour for #thedarkestsin, the second book in the Cesare Aldo series, by DV Bishop @cesarealdo. Loved this one too. As always, full details on the blog, link in bio. @lovebookstours #bookreview I read this straight after City of Vengeance and I was glad to be immersing myself in Aldo's world once more. In fact, I'm gutted the third one, Ritual of Fire, isn't out yet (due 1st June this year) because I just wanted to keep going!  Anyway, to the story. Aldo is following up on a report of intruders at one of the city's many convents, when a man's body is discovered within the convent walls. And it seems that no one other than the nuns has been at the convent. Meanwhile, Strocchi has a couple of days off to travel out of the city to introduce his new wife to his mother. But whilst away he also makes a discovery, one that he can't help but follow up on, even though it might affect his relationship with Aldo.  There is plenty here to help new readers get to know Aldo and what kind of man he is and I've said more about this in my other review. He's a man you'll root for. I really liked that we found out a wee bit more about Aldo's early life in this book, it fleshes him out even more. But the secrets he keeps are threatened again here and I found that as tense as the main storyline.  I struggled a little bit with all the different nuns at the convent but loved the idea of the listening nun, whose sole role it is to listen to every conversation between a sister and any visitors  to ensure that no impropriety takes place. I really liked the mother superior too.  Again, this was an immersive read. I loved all the sights and sounds of Florence and the large cast of characters Aldo meets in his job. Well researched and and beautifully written, The Darkest Sin is another fantastic book from Bishop. I don't know what's in store for Aldo in Ritual of Fire and beyond but, for now, I let out a cheer at the very last line of this book. I bet you do too.

#Repost @lovetoread42 ・・・ REVIEW #AD #Gifted #LBTCrew Thank you @lovebooktours @cesarealdo @panmacmillan for my spot on #thedarkestsin blog tour. I've really enjoyed this one. The blurb... Florence. Spring, 1537. When Cesare Aldo investigates a report of intruders at a convent in the Renaissance city’s northern quarter, he enters a community divided by bitter rivalries and harbouring dark secrets. When a man’s body is found deep inside the convent, stabbed more than two dozen times, the case becomes even more complicated. Unthinkable as it seems, all the evidence suggests one of the nuns must be the killer. Meanwhile, Constable Carlo Strocchi finds human remains pulled from the River Arno that belong to an officer of the law missing since winter. The dead man had many enemies, but who would dare kill an official of the city’s most feared criminal court? As Aldo and Strocchi close in on the truth, identifying the killers will prove more treacherous than either of them could ever have imagined . . . My thoughts... This is an engrossing historical thriller, I loved the setting of Renaissance Florence, I could picture it well after visiting this beautiful city on our honeymoon and, having watched The Borgias, I could imagine the type of clothes and lifestyle of this era. Having the murder take place in a convent I think, was a novel idea that makes this murder mystery unique. I enjoyed the intrigue and plots and found the two story lines merged well together. Although this is book 2 of the series I found it easy to read as a standalone story, there are mentions of Cesare's past but this adds to the story, he seems to be quite a complex character. In summary, this is quite an action-packed crime thriller with plenty of twists and turns, it was both interesting as well as compelling. I'll be watching out for book 3 Ritual of Fire, due out this summer. #lovetoread #bookreviews #bookrecommendation #bookblogger #booksofinstagram

Second novels in a crime fiction series often don’t get the attention, love or plaudits given to the first. But I’m proud of #TheDarkestSin, my second historical thriller featuring LGBTQ+ detective #CesareAldo. Writing a novel about a convent of nun facing enforced enclosure during the lockdowns of 2020 was… an experience! But it certainly added verisimilitude to the narrative, despite all the stress and anxiety of that year. The Darkest Sun has been shortlisted for the 2023 NZ Booklovers Award and is now available in paperback. @panmacmillan @macmillanaus

My Review: Thank you to @lovebookstours for my copy of this book in return for an honest review. I really enjoy reading books set in Italy, it’s my favourite holiday destination and after visiting Florence last summer, this was perfect. There is so much going on in this book even though it seems to be just a murder mystery set back in the mid 1500’s. We follow Aldo as he tried to solve the murder in the convent, and Strocchi who’s investigating the case of a missing officer who’s body he found when going home to tell his mother about his marriage. Both have good investigative instincts but do they solve the crimes committed? I really enjoyed this and will now have to go read book 1 in the series. Even though this is book 2, it’s a great standalone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Have you read this? What did you think?

My thoughts 💭 This is the second book in the Cesare Aldo series, I recommend reading the first book as events in this Book relate to the first. I haven’t read the first book but I am definitely going to now as I really enjoyed this one. Set in sixteenth century Florence. A man is found dead in a convent. Aldo is on the case to try and uncover what happened. I really liked Aldo with his calm approach at trying to solve what happened. I liked the setting of the convent. There was a lot of characters with all the nuns but there was a helpful list of who was who at the beginning of the book which I found very helpful. I definitely recommend this one. This really did transport you into a convent (ok, my brain took me to the one in the Sound of Music), and also to the River Arno, with the hustle and bustle of the Ponte Vecchio and the enormity of the Duomo. Whilst a fairly medium paced read, it is compelling as you need to know what happened. How did the victim gain entry into the convent? Why? Who killed him? And why? Also, the other layer of the missing City Official and who killed him too? There is a darkness hanging over Florence in this story, and I like how the author managed to conjure that through the imagery and the era. Im@going back to read book 1 now and I thoroughly recommend this one for fans of historical fiction, murder mystery and any Florence lovers. 💫💫💫💫 #bookstagram #bibliophile #lovebookstours #thedarkestsin #dvbishop @cesarealdo @panmacmillan @lovebookstours #bookworm #bookdragon #books #booktours #readingtime #readingthroughtheages #historicalfiction #adgifted #adprproducts #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #booksanddogs #dogsandbooks #bookdogmodel #myboy #cockerspanielsofinstagram

#Repost @heatherjfitt ・・・ Today it’s my turn on THE DARKEST SIN Blog Tour. I’m a big historical fiction fan and the Cesare Aldo Series has been on my radar for a while. It was just one of those things I’d never got round to, but when the opportunity came up to review The Darkest Sin it seemed like the perfect opportunity to read City of Vengeance first. @cesarealdo does a remarkable job of bringing both 16th century Florence and his characters to life. Aldo specifically has already found a special place in my heart, as has Carlo Strocchi. I particularly love how both men exist on the scales of grey between good and bad; particularly when Strocchi discovers this about himself in The Darkest Sin. In many ways, the story around the murder in the convent is as old as time, but Bishop writes as if he thought of it himself, which makes for a fresh read. If I were to have one criticism, it would be that I struggled to keep up with who was who within the cast of nuns. Although, I’m not necessarily sure that could have been avoided. For me this is a solid 🌟🌟🌟🌟 read and although it can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading City of Vengeance to give a more rounded and informed experience. 💫 Blog Tour 💫 The Darkest Sin by D.V. Bishop @cesarealdo Publisher @panmacmillan Tour Organiser @lovebookstours ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ AD - PR PRODUCT Synopsis 📖 Florence.

As Aldo and Strocchi close in on the truth, identifying the killers will prove more treacherous than either of them could ever have imagined . . .
To both historical fiction and crime fiction fans. Thank you to Love Book Tours and the publisher for having me on the tour and for my gifted copy of the book. #thedarkestsin #dvbishop #panmacmillan #lovebookstours #lbtcrew #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #bookblogger #bookreview #bookreviewer #blogtour #booktour #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #bookworm #booknerd #bookaddict #booklover #books #reading #readingcorner #readmorebooks #readingislife #ilovetoread #ilovereading #chaptersofvicki

Yesterday ran away with me so I didn't get to share my #bookpost. But I was super excited to receive #TheDarkestSin, the second in the Cesare Aldo series by DV Bishop @cesarealdo. The timing is brilliant as I finished City of Vengence, the first in the series, last night. Totally loved it. I'm on the #blogtour for this one next month, my stop is on 14th March so do look out for that. Huge thanks to @panmacmillan for sending this review copy. #gifted

My next read was The Darkest Sin by D V Bishop. This copy is a signed copy I bought from @goldsborobooks last year. I pre-ordered it after enjoying the first book in the series. This book is book 2 of a series set in renaissance Florence. It is only the 3rd historical crime novel I have ever read. Following reading CJ Sansom - Dissolution and D V Bishop - City of Vengeance. Turns out historical crime books are definitely another genre I like. I love Italy and would enjoy visiting Florence in the future, as I have not to date. I was absorbed by this book by the end. I read the second half of the book within the space of two days, as wanted to find out all the details. Synopsis of the book is provided below: Florence. Spring, 1537. When Cesare Aldo investigates a report of intruders at a convent in the Renaissance city’s northern quarter, he enters a community divided by bitter rivalries and harbouring dark secrets. His case becomes far more complicated when a man’s body is found deep inside the convent, stabbed more than two dozen times. Unthinkable as it seems, all the evidence suggests one of the nuns must be the killer. Meanwhile, Constable Carlo Strocchi finds human remains pulled from the Arno that belong to an officer of the law missing since winter. The dead man had many enemies, but who would dare kill an official of the city’s most feared criminal court? As Aldo and Strocchi close in on the truth, identifying the killers will prove more treacherous than either of them could ever have imagined . . . The Darkest Sin is an atmospheric locked-room thriller by D. V. Bishop, set in Renaissance Florence and is the sequel to City of Vengeance. #historicalfiction #crimefiction #dvbishop #cesarealdo #thedarkestsin #greatreads

Book number 2- loved this one even more. Kept me thinking all the way through. Loved the character development of the characters we met before, but loved the whole convent family. Strong female characters throughout. Contains lots of history about corruption and I’m looking forward to where it goes with Ruggerio. Had to keep reminding myself that this was the 16th century and not today. Thoroughly recommend. #thedarkestsin @cesarealdo #cesarealdo #otto #murdermystery #conventlife #corruption #historicalfiction #16thcenturyflorence #florence #policing #strongfemalecharacters #mysogyny #gaylove #danger #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #book2 #instareads #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #tbr #bringonbook3 #bookshelf #bookclub #readreadread #booksbooksbooks #bookreview #bookish #readersgonnaread #lovebooks

Zoe’s Fiction Reviews! (AD/GIFTED) 🌟 Hello Bookstagram! At 33 weeks (and 3 days!) pregnant, I can honestly say I miss my husband now that the school term has resumed! 🤣 The last two weeks have been hectic getting our house ready for Baby No. 2, but more importantly, it has been so nice having Nath at home to help with Zeke! 🥰 🌟 * Title: The Darkest Sin (Cesare Aldo No. 2) * Author: D.V. Bishop (@cesarealdo) * ISBN: 9781529038835 * Publisher: Macmillan Australia * Genre: Crime Fiction, Historical Fiction 🌟 What I liked: * The glorious setting of Florence - Florence is one of my favourite cities in the world and Bishop’s description of Florence as Aldo and Strocchi moved through its main streets and back alleys was exquisite. * The characterisation of both Aldo and Strocchi - the two were both portrayed as good men. Men who sought truth and helped others. In particular, I liked how Strocchi’s morals and values were tested. * The crime within the walls of the abbey - I am a huge sucker for a well crafted whodunnit, and this was excellent! Even within the four walls, there were still so many suspects! * The machinations of men - from the Archbishop to the Otto to the confraternities. There was power, manipulation and deception - the perfect recipe for murder! What I did not vibe with: * Strocchi’s inability to see Aldo for who he truely is. I get that it is a reflection of the times, but still! Come on, man! You know the man! I rate this: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌟 Thank you @macmillanaus for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! 🌟 🏷 TAGS 🏷 #AusBookishFeatures #AussieReaders #BookReview #CrimeFiction #DVBishop #HistoricalFiction #HonestBookReview #ILoveBooks #ILoveReading #InstaReads #MacmillanAus #ReadersGonnaRead #ReadersOfInstagram #TheDarkestSin
