INTO THE LURE OF TIME by Vera Bell Pub Date April 19, 2024 446 Pages Thank you @verabellauthor for the #gifted book. "In this gripping sequel to the award-winning novel, Through the Veneer of Time, echoes of Siena’s past life lure her into a shocking indiscretion that threatens to destroy her marriage. She alone can undo the damage, but this chilling revelation is only the beginning of her battle." I am trying to recover from a book hangover. After reading and loving the first book, Through the Veneer of Time, I went into reading Into the Lure of time thinking there is no way this book could be as good. I was so wrong! Usually in a Parallel time line story I like one timeline more than the other. But this is not the case. I enjoyed both and all the characters equally. There is rivalry, romance, revenge, heartbreak, suspense, lies, and deceit. I am looking forward to the third book in this trilogy even though I don't want the story to end. Amid the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolas Ceausescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed to become an informer. 📚 Book Review 📚 Book : Shadows and Secrets Author : Harini Srinivasan Rating : 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 Review : "Shadows and Secrets : The Pataliputra Conspiracy" is a historical thriller, set in the time period of Chandragupta II Vikramaditya, towards the end of his successful reign. And the story alternates between Pataliputra and Nandivardha. So the places and the characters are pretty much intact in the story except some of the new ones. The story starts with Acharya Brihaspati feeling foreboding when the whole Pataliputra is preparing for a Buddhist festival. And the very next moment Acharya finds a dead body of a foreigner and the real problem starts from there on. What I like most about the book is how the author explains every name and their occupation, meaning of every word that used to use at that time with their modern ones. The background was explained well, as well as the whole set up and it is done in every step. This point is also the thing that makes me frustrated too, as I think there are times when the explanation becomes a little repetitive. Another thing that I like is the thrilling, mystery part of the story with high stakes. And how intricately it is done that you will keep guessing till the end. Even though we mostly follow Shaunaka in the story, the other minor characters also play a huge part and we get a more vivid picture of Pataliputra. And I love how the story ends with a hopeful note. So would definitely love to recommend it, if you're looking for a good historical fiction thriller with actions and politics. #qotd : I need some book recommendations, whatever you liked and want other people to read, tell here. #bookreview #bookreviewsofinstagram #shadowsandsecrets #historicalfiction #thrillernovel #historicalthrillers #paperbacks #booklove #bookrecommendation #bookreader #bookstagrammer

*Il Libro dell'Amore di Kathleen McGowan . "Tutta la Storia è supposizione. Tutta. 📚📚📚📚,5/5 . . . #kathleenmcgowan #thebookoflove #illibrodellamore #historicalromance #historicalthrillers #thriller #romanzostorico #leggereperriflettere #leggereperimparare #ticonsigliounlibro #librispeciali #amazingreading #bookworm #booksreader #bookaddicted

So I was really very grateful to receive this one last week. 🌟The City Beautiful🌟 by: Aden PolyDoros Pub:@hqstories (see next slide for blurb) One of the quotes about this book, which is on the cover, pretty much sums up why I want to read it. Review 📖 ~ Back in 16th century Florence ✨️. The Darkest Sin, by D.V. Bishop, is the second book in the Cesare Aldo saga, set in Medici Italy. In this historical thriller, we encounter a new mystery: a murder in a convent. While Cesare has to give an answer to this unusual crime, his protégé Strocchi seeks to solve the disappearance of another investigator, unaware that the answer to it could have important consequences. Like the first book, this novel was fast-paced, atmospheric and very entertaining. The author is very skilled at giving information of the period without making the narrative dense or boring. Learning about life in the Florentine convents of the 16th century was very interesting, as was learning about the hierarchy of power and security in Florence at the time. About the mystery in this book, I liked the approach better than the first book's mystery, (probably because it was a "locked-room" mystery, which I generally tend to like better). Alternating the convent crime with Strocchi's investigation made the reading more dynamic. I also liked that this book had more depth than the first one: we got to see more about the characters' past and their evolution, and their interactions seemed more natural. However, there were some things that didn't convince me: I was very confused by the names of the characters in the convent and it was very difficult to follow their interactions. Moreover, some of the characters in the first book appeared very little (Orvieto 🥺) and the ending disappointed me a bit (although I think it is a logical and well executed conclusion!). Lastly, I've read some people saying that you can read this book without reading the first in the series (City of Vengeance). I really think you need to start with the first book because a lot of plot details in The Darkest Sin go hand in hand with things that happen in City of Vengeance. In short, and despite some details, I loved it and I'm already looking forward to reading the third book of this saga! 😍 My rate: ☀️☀️☀️☀️✨️ 4.75/5 #historicalfictionbooks #historicalthrillers #thedarkestsin #bookstagram #bookreview #bookingonsunshine

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars Set in Boston during WWII, The Rumor Game is a historical thriller covering what is going on stateside while the war rages on across Europe. Anne Lemire is a reporter who writes the Rumor Clinic, a newspaper article that disproves the rumors floating around town. During her time covering the trivial rumors, Anne comes across a story that is bigger than what she’s worked on before and hopefully her big break. As she works on proving her story about Nazi propaganda to be true, Anne’s investigation intersects with Devon Muvey’s FBI investigation. together, the two are led down a path that could lead to uncovering espionage, dangerous crime and local fascism. This book takes the reader on an interesting journey rooted in the history of WWII and what was going on in the United States at this time. When I picked this book up, I didn’t have any high expectations, but I was immediately pulled into this story and couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed the way that Anne and Devon’s investigations were separate, but intersected in a way that pulled them together. This story was well written, easy to follow and build in a historical setting that was easily believable. I liked Anne and Devin’s characters and believe they worked well together. I’ve read a few WWII thrillers, but nothing set in the US and I enjoyed this new setting and the connection to the war. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am glad I got the chance to read it! @mullenwrites #netgalley #arcreader #bookreview #bookrecommendations #wwii #historicalthrillers

Loc.30 THE RUMOR GAME by Thomas Mullen quite surprised me, but once I adapted to concept of a *spy* game from a more harmless, or at least domestic sort, I began to appreciate what I was reading. Stylistically speaking, this book is quite good and interesting. Beyond that, this book gives a detailed perspective of immigrant life in the US at the time of WWII. Fascinating insights on domestic spy activity and the immense pressure people faced from the government due to ideological suspicion. I recommend this one for readers of suspense, WWII fiction or US historical fiction, or domestic spy stories. 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦. 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑑, 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒. 🇮🇹🔎Book Feature🔍🇮🇹 Thank you so much to @simonbooks for my #gifted copy! 📖: What We Buried ✍️: Robert Rotenberg 🗓️: February 27, 2024 🥞𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: It’s been years since Daniel Kennicott’s brother, Michael, was shot and killed the night before he was about to depart for Gubbio, Italy. The case, never solved, has haunted Daniel ever since. Long suspecting the killing was tied to Michael’s planned trip but overwhelmed with grief, Daniel has put off going there—until now, the tenth anniversary of the murder. As he’s about to leave, Daniel learns that his two mentors, detectives Ari Greene and Nora Bering, have been more involved in the investigation of Michael’s murder than he ever knew. And they’re concerned about Daniel’s safety. But why? Is Daniel risking his life—and those of others—by trying to uncover the truth? When Daniel arrives in the bucolic Italian hill town, he learns the past has not been put to rest. Residents are still haunted by the brutal Nazi occupation, the brave acts of the local freedom fighters, and the swift savagery of German retribution. And as Daniel delves into his family’s deadly connection to Gubbio, Ari Greene searches for a killer closer to home. ✨This sounds like a good one! Can you believe it’s inspired by a true story? 🗣️ I got zero sleep last night bc my daughter is sick AGAIN. So I’m making a coffee stop on my way to school. ✨Release Day ✨ Set in 19th century Sri Lanka and inspired by local folklore, the daughter of a traditional demon-priest—relentlessly bullied by peers and accused of witchcraft herself—tries to solve the mysterious attacks that have been terrorizing her coastal village. The author put so much heart into this book. The vivid descriptions, gothic atmosphere, supernatural twists, and unique plot make this a five star read. Make sure you don’t skip the “Author’s Note” in the beginning; it sets the tone beautifully for this haunting story. This is by no means a “feel good” read, but it’s one not to be missed. Thank you Partner @bibliolifestyle @blackstonepublishing for a gifted copy of this amazing book published a few weeks ago on February 6th! A brand-new novel from New York Times bestselling author Robert Littell, A Plague on Both Your Houses is a thrilling tale of love and war. On Christmas Day, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev delivered a ten-minute televised speech announcing his resignation as Soviet president. Moments later, with little pomp and less circumstance, the red flag was lowered from its floodlit perch atop the Kremlin, and the Soviet Union ceases to exist. Into the vacuum—before a new democracy has time to put down roots—surged the Russian mafia, supplying what the new state could not: krysha, or “roof”—protection for the privately owned businesses sprouting up across the country. Rivalries turned bloody as Moscow’s Jewish mafia battled the Ossete vory v zakone (literally “thieves-in-law”) for control of the city. Caught up in the mayhem, Yulia, only daughter of the Jewish mafia godfather, and Roman, only son of the Ossete mafia godfather, navigated the minefield of a star-crossed love affair as they attempt to escape a destiny that appears preordained. A Plague on Both Your Houses is the fictional story of one bloody episode in Moscow’s Great Turf War, when clans fought brutally in the streets and the future of the Russian nation was anything but assured. #qotd What is your favorite color? #book #aplagueonbothyourhouses #robertlittell #bibliolifestyle #bookstagram #booklover #hardcover #historicalthrillers #historicalfiction #organizedcrime #booksbooksbooks #reader #bookmailmonday #bookmail #bookmailisthebestmail #thriller #thrillerbooklover #booksofig #readcrimefiction #reading

Kirsten is a force and such a strong female character. I absolutely adore the way this book weaves music into the story line so seamlessly. It brought out emotions from me for these characters and what they had to endure and overcome. This beautiful and complex plot line kept me guessing until the end. 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 MASTERING THE FRENCH ART OF MURDER by Colleen Cambridge Book I in the American in Paris series MY RATING 🐾🐾🐾 RECOMMENDED FOR READERS WHO • like cozy historicals • enjoy descriptions of food in their mysteries SYNOPSIS France, December 1949. When a young woman is stabbed to death with Julia Child’s kitchen knife, Julia’s best friend Tabitha King investigates. MY THOUGHTS This book is billed as mystery, but I found it to be more of a historical thriller. Set in post World War II Paris, there is a hint of noir to the novel’s atmosphere. However with a core cast of colorful, likable characters, I’d definitely class this as a cozy. Including real people in a fictional crime story can be tricky, but Cambridge pulls it off. Julia is a fun side character, usually found in the kitchen whipping up delicious meals. This was a quick read that kept me engaged. Given the opportunity, I would definitely read another book in the series. #catsandbooks #minibookreview #historicalmystery #historicalthrillers #colleencambridge #anamericaninparisseries #masteringthefrenchartofmurder #thebacklister #reading #bookstagram

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys 1989, Romania on the brink of a revolution: The story follows Cristian Florescue, a high school student in Bucharest who was forced to spy for the government under the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauşescu. Cristian still believe he can fight the regime though, but he just need to survive first while not being able to trust anyone around him. This is the second novel of Sepetys I ever read. 📚Diving into History with “The Bookseller of Inverness” 🏰🕵️‍♂️ Just finished a captivating journey through time with S. G. Maclean’s “The Bookseller of Inverness”. 📖 Set in the Highlands in 1752 post the Battle of Culloden, this historical thriller introduces us to Iain MacGillivray, a Jacobite survivor now peacefully running a bookshop in Inverness. The narrative weaves a spellbinding murder mystery, drawing you into a world of intrigue and revenge. As a first-time reader of this genre, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not only engrossed in the gripping plot but also enjoying the rich historical background, meticulously researched by the author. S. G. Maclean effortlessly transports you to a time when every page breathes the essence of the Jacobites and the aftermath of Culloden. The characters are vividly drawn, making the historical backdrop come alive in every chapter. So, if you love thrilling murder mysteries and have a penchant for history, “The Bookseller of Inverness” is an absolute must-read! 📚 #bookreviews #historicalthrillers #bookrecommendations

✨ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑺. 𝑮. 𝑴𝒂𝒄𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒏 ✨ I came across this book in Waterstones during my birthday trip to Edinburgh. The sales assistant did a fabulous job of pitching it to me and I couldn’t resist taking away a signed copy. Then, whilst searching through @stitch_and_read’s wish list for her birthday, I noticed she had this on there too so suggested we buddy read it, and what a buddy read it was! After nearly losing his life at the Battle of Culloden, Iain MacGillivray has all but given up hope of his fellow Jacobites rising to restore the Stuart’s to the throne. It is now 1752 and having returned from exile in Virginia, Iain has settled back in Inverness as a bookshop owner, leading somewhat of a peaceful life. That is, until he notices a shady character furiously searching through the books in his shop. Iain is right to be suspicious of this man, as the next day he finds him dead in his shop, his throat cut by a Jacobite. Iain soon finds himself thrust into a world of duplicity, betrayal and vengeance… I really enjoyed this story. I must say that it did take me a while to get into (although the inclusion of the author’s note, map and character name list helped with this enormously) but once I got past this, I was 𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝. It was full of twists and turns and extremely immersive characters. I especially loved Ishbel’s side story. The research that has been put into writing this novel is outstanding and has to be commended. MacLean has managed to seamlessly combine two of my favourite genres: historical fiction and crime. This is a must read for anyone looking for a gripping historical thriller. Rating: 4.5 ⭐️ . . . #booksellerofinverness #sgmaclean #bookreview #historicalthrillers #bookstagrammer #bookstauk

𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Twenty-year-old Constance Horton has run away from her life in Victorian London, disguising herself as a boy to board the Makepeace, an expedition vessel bound for the icy and unexplored Northwest Passage of the Arctic. Even more dangerous than the cold, the storms, and the hunger, are some of the men aboard—including the ship’s scientist Edison Stowe. He seems to be watching Constance, and she knows that his attention could be fatal. In London two years later: Maude Horton is searching for the truth. After being told by the British Admiralty that her sister’s death onboard the Makepeace was nothing more than a tragic accident, she receives a diary revealing that Edison Stowe had more of a hand in Constance’s death than the returning crew acknowledged. In order to get the answers she needs, Maude decides to shadow Edison. She joins him on a new venture he’s started to capitalize on the murder mania that has all of London in a frenzy—a travel company that takes guests around the country via train to witness public hangings—to extract the truth from him in any way possible. RELEASE DAY IS JANUARY 30th! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars Hallum is the third book in the Of Shadows and Secrets series. Set in Europe during WWII, we follow Will and Thomas and their fellow teammates as they face atrocities in Germany. After a mission has gone wrong and a few of their members are captured, the others are forced to embark on a dangerous mission to rescue their own. I have not read either of the first two books in this series, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. I definitely want to go back and see what I missed in the beginning of this series, but I don’t think my lack of knowledge took too much away from this book. I loved everything about this book. I don’t think I’ve ever read a WWII thriller, but this one definitely set the bar high. Casey Morales did a great job of recreating that dangerous time and weaving his characters and story into history. From the first page I was drawn in and invested in the story, finding it so hard to put this book down. The sweet MM romance intertwined in the story was the perfect balance to the heavy time this book is set in. I am so glad I found this series and can’t wait to go back and read the books I’ve missed and hope to see more coming from this series! 📚Do you like WWII fiction? 💘AD PR-PRODUCT💘 Thanks to @zaffrebooks and @lovebookstours for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest and free review Munich Wolf by Rory Clements BLURB IN COMMENTS REVIEW It is no secret that I love books that are set during the Nazi era, they are my favourite sub genre of historical fiction, however, I have not read many thrillers set during the Nazi period and this is something that will definitely be changing after reading this book. Set during the 1930's in Germany where the Nazis are in power the plot follows Detective Sebastian Wollf who lives and works in Munich the home of the Nazi Movement that he detests. he is ordered to solve a murder that Hitler has taken a personal interest in, whilst also having to watch his back against the party that he detests. The book was well written with a captivating story line and well developed characters. I went through such a range of emotions whilst reading this book and I found myself really caring about some of the characters, especially Sebastian. The plot is full of tension and intrigue with the perfect pacing and a story that literally left me on the edge of my seat unable to breathe at times. ⚫️ Painting the darkness, by Robert Goddard ⚫️ London, 1882. William Trenchard is sitting in the garden of his family home, when a stranger pushes the garden gate. He introduces himself as James Norton, but states that his real name is Sir James Davenall, the man to whom William’s wife, Constance, was engaged a decade ago. He explains he did not commit suicide as everyone thought, and is back for everything—title, fiancée, money—that was taken from him since he left. What will become of William’s world, as Constance seems irresistibly drawn by James, who does look so much like her long lost first love? And how come his family seems to have so many secrets? Reading this book was quite a rollercoaster. The story had all the elements to make me fall in love with it: atmospheric Victorian London, dark family secrets, elegant writing style… There were definitely various moments where I could not stop reading, turning the (virtual) pages on my Kindle late into the night! The way the story is constructed, with multiple narrators and points of view, is interesting and quite complex, though at times a bit frustrating, as it progresses in twist and turns. The story alternates between long chapters where the intrigue feels drawn out with passages of intense revelations. The denouement is a dark one, and the general mood throughout is very well-done. I did feel however that there were too many plot twists happening too quickly in the last quarter of the book. As a result of this, the story went from character-driven to event-driven, and I felt a sense of emotional disconnection by the last of the 600+ pages. I still recommend Painting the Darkness if you love a good historical thriller! 🕯️book review 🌊 The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke is an atmospheric supernatural thriller set on a Scottish island full of mystery and dark secrets. I just couldn’t put this book down (and ended up finishing it in one day). This was such a compelling read! This novel tells the story of Liv and her three daughters, who end up living on Lòn Haven after Liv accepts a job offer to paint a mural inside of the local lighthouse. Eerie things start happening almost immediately after their arrival - runes and bones are discovered inside the lighthouse, and strange, lost-looking children are seen walking around the building. Some of the locals claim that these are not real children but rather “wildlings”, fae-like creatures that disguise themselves as children to harm families - and they might or might not be connected to a curse cast by a witch during the trials that happened on the island in the 1600’s… I adored the haunting atmosphere of this novel and all of the descriptions of the Scottish landscape and wilderness, as well as the folklore elements. It all contributed to make this book even more unsettling and eerie. The plot was also extremely compelling, and the pacing gets faster and faster as the mysteries unravel. In a way it really reminded me of the novel Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver - which I also ate up in one sitting. The witchcraft aspect of this was also incredibly interesting and it ties up into the story really well. I especially appreciated how the author puts a spotlight on how superstition, prejudice, fear and cruelty are often related, just as much today as in the 1600’s - and it’s usually the outcasts or most vulnerable people that end up as victims. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy atmospheric and fast-paced thrillers with supernatural and witchy elements! What was the setting of the last book you’ve read? 🌊

In the summer of 1974, Boston is in a period of civil unrest following the decision to desegregate schools. White residents are angry, scared, and beginning to riot. Mary Pat Fennessey is a single mother scraping to get by who has spent her entire life in south Boston. Just a week before the transfer of students begins, Mary Pat’s 17-year-old daughter, Jules, mysteriously disappears. That same night, a young Black man is found dead on the subway tracks in a predominantly white neighborhood, leaving everyone perplexed about the circumstances surrounding his death. Determined to uncover the truth, Mary Pat embarks on relentless personal investigation into her daughter’s whereabouts, inadvertently putting her in the crosshairs of the Irish mob that reigns over Southie. This was unlike any book I had read before. Lehane explores themes of sorrow, economic hardship, and despair while also highlighting the significant influence wielded by the criminal elements in Southie. This mix of historical fiction and crime kept my attention and had me flying through the book to see what would happen next. The characters were each so realistic, I felt like I truly got to know each one at the end. Mary Pat is a complex and sometimes unlikeable character, but I couldn’t help rooting for her. My one critique is I do wish the bussing crisis plot was more tied into the story, it felt like a a big buildup with nothing ending up really playing out in that aspect. Dennis Lehane is a great author, I could definitely see this being turned into a miniseries. I highly recommend this one!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

🎬Book Feature🎬 Where They Lie by Claire Coughlan Pub Date: 02/20/24 Thank you, @harperperennial, for the gifted copy. Synopsis: Dublin, 1943. Actress Julia Bridges disappears. She was last seen entering the house of Gloria Fitzpatrick, who is later put on trial for the murder of a woman whose abortion she facilitated. But it’s never proved that Gloria had a hand in Julia’s death—and Julia’s body has never been found. Gloria, however, is sentenced to life in an institution for the criminally insane, where she’s found dead a few years later from an apparent suicide, and the truth of what happened to Julia Bridges dies with her. Until . . . Dublin, 1968. Nicoletta Sarto is an ambitious junior reporter for the Irish Sentinel when the bones of Julia Bridges are discovered in the garden of a house on the outskirts of the city. Drawn into investigating the 25-year-old mystery of Julia’s disappearance and her link to the notorious Gloria Fitzpatrick, Nicoletta becomes immersed in the tangled underworld of the illegal abortion industry, stirring up long-buried secrets from her own past. A beautifully atmospheric, timely thriller, Where They Lie uses a murder mystery as a lens to focus on the long struggle of women fighting to achieve autonomy and succeed in a man’s world. QOTD: Is there a mysterious disappearance that intrigues you? It's not a well-known case, but the 1984 New Year's Day disappearance of Samuel Todd in NYC is a head scratcher. #oliveinfluencer #harperperennial #wheretheylie #clairecoughlan #murderthriller #historicalthrillers #politicalthrillers #historicalmystery #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks
