Starr groeit op in Garden Heights, een wijk waar veel criminaliteit plaatsvind. Starr gaat naar Williamson Prep, een blanke school. Op een avond beland zij met een vriendin op een feestje in Garden Heights. Tijdens het feest is er een schietpartij en Starr vlucht samen met haar jeugd beste vriend Khalil weg van de locatie. Tijdens de rit worden ze aangehouden door een blanke politie agent. Tijdens een discussie en onschuldige beweging van Khalil, besluit de agent op Khalil te schieten, wat zijn dood betekent. "What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?" Enjoyed this read and it's one of those books I think is better to hear on an audio edition. The narrator adds a sass and emotional edge that I think made the story significantly more impactful. Hey fellow bookworms! I completed The Hate You Give @angiethomas at the beginning of March and it took me so long to gather my thoughts about it because it had an impact on me. I rarely read YA novels but the reviews were so great and I feel that this is an important book for everyone to read across ALL age spans secondary to social issues surrounding race, classism, police brutality etc. The Hate You Give tells the story of Starr, a black teenager, who lives in predominantly black neighborhood in California. Her neighborhood is considered poor but her parents work hard in order for her to attend a predominantly white prep school. One night she attends a party with her childhood friend Khalil (who is unarmed)and witnesses his death at the hands of a white police officer. The media is portraying Khalil as a thug but that really isn’t the case. As the plot unfolds, Starr has to navigate the consequences of testifying at Khalil’s trial, speaking out against racial injustice at a predominately white school, and being a viewed as a sellout in her neighborhood. This book resonated with me so much, especially regarding Starr having to navigate between her race and the white race. The code switching is so real! During this journey we discovered that multiple JP books have been banned in the United States (Florida county alone have banned 20 of her titles from it’s schools) It made me wonder what other books were causing a stir and why?! 📖 The Hate You Give ✒️ Angie Thomas “What’s the point of having a voice if you’re going to be silent in those moments when you shouldn’t be” Released in 2017 and heralded as one of the great YA novels of our time, The Hate You Give (THUG) follows teenager Starr Carter, who witnesses her best friend being fatally shot by police. Following the tragedy, while struggling with her identity and trauma, Starr must decide if she speaks out about what happened or if she remains silent. Je n'ai pas lu The hate you give de la même auteure car le sujet m'intriguait moins, mais ce prequel est assez original, donc je l'ai lu ! 😊 👶🏾 Positif : 👨🏾🍼 Le point de départ m'est assez peu connu avec un homme qui se découvre papa alors qu'il a 17 ans et fait partie d'un gang, ça donne un regard tendre assez rafraîchissant. 👨🏾🍼 Je trouve intéressant ce côté père inattendu qui à la fois adoré son fils et à la fois craque car il n'est pas prêt. 👨🏾🍼 Dre et la mère de Maverick sont assez attachants via les conseils qu'ils lui donnent. 👨🏾🍼 J'aime la façon dont Mave réagit à l'annonce de Lisa peu avant la moitié du tome. 👨🏾🍼 Le père de Mav est de très bon conseil tout du long. 👨🏾🍼 J'aime le fait que Mav tente toujours d'agir au mieux pour ceux qu'il aime. 👶🏾 Négatif : 👩🏾🍼 C'est agaçant de voir les disputes s'enchaîner sur la moitié du tome alors qu'avant on avait de bons échanges. 👩🏾🍼 Je trouve Iesha et Lisa très peu compréhensives envers Mav, il fait de son mieux et elles n'ont que des reproches... et même contradictoires (du genre qu'il doit pas dealer mais qu'il doit les aider à payer alors qu'il n'a que 17 ans). 👩🏾🍼 On ne revois jamais la famille de Lisa et on ne reviens pas non plus sur Iesha qui a visiblement abandonné son fils. 👩🏾🍼 La pique de King à la fin n'a aucune résolution, je vois que c'est pour se conclure dans The hate you give mais ça me semble fort qu'il attende 16 ans... 👩🏾🍼 Au final je n'ai vu aucune difficulté pour sortir du gang, il est même assez seul. 👶🏾 Conclusion : J'ai eu du mal avec le décalage que promettait le résumé et la réalité, ainsi qu'avec les rôles de mères assez gênantes, mais j'ai apprécié le personnage principal et ses difficultés à s'adapter aux défis qui s'enchaînent. Und auf einmal steht Starr im Mittelpunkt der Ermittlungen, denn als einzige Zeugin kann nur sie erzählen, was wirklich passiert ist. Doch in Starr schlagen zwei Herzen, Garden Heights ist ihr Zuhause und sie möchte nicht mehr länger tatenlos zusehen und auf ihrer Privatschule möchte sie am liebsten alles vergessen… doch nach und nach wird Starr bewusst, welche Rolle sie in diesem Verbrechen spielt und das die Zeit vorbei ist, zu schweigen! Mein Fazit: LEST DIESES BUCH! Eine so so wichtige Geschichte über Rassismus, in einer Geschichte verpackt, die sich wirklich gut und verständlich lesen lässt. Mir sind sowas von die Augen geöffnet worden. Ich schäme mich dafür, wie viele Dinge mir gar nicht bewusst gewesen sind… Und hier wird nicht ausschließlich der Mord an einem Jungen thematisiert, sondern noch so viel mehr. Problemviertel, Gangs, Alltagsrassismus, Freundschaft und Liebe zwischen schwarzen und weißen Menschen. Und Starr ist die perfekte Protagonistin. Ihre Zerrissenheit und Angst kam so gut rüber und war so verständlich. Gerade ihre Rolle in der Schule und mit welchen Problemen und Vorurteilen sie da zu kämpfen hat… und dann der Mord an ihrem Freund Khalil und wer hier als das eigentliche Opfer dargestellt wird. Unfassbar, einfach UNFASSBAR! Leute, lest dieses Buch und danke, dass ihr dafür abgestimmt habt, es stand viel zu lange ungelesen in meinem Regal. Volle ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! 📣MONTHLY RECAP! It turns out you can fit a lot into a leap year month! 👉I spent the majority of February travelling around America, with few side trips to Australia and India. What about you? One of most memorable moments was when I found myself back in 18th Century, as a midwife, giving crucial evidence in courtroom during a rape trial. My other three standouts were re-reads where I was locked in a backwards time wrap trying to solve a crime (that was intense!). Then when I fell in love with a time travelling apartment and lemon pie, and again when I rekindled my friendship with my favourite word - Elliot. I actually think I might like it better than “The Hate You Give,” because Maverick is awesome. He’s not perfect, but you can see how hard he’s trying to take care of his newborn son while trying to make amends with his non-baby momma ex-girlfriend. Yes, it’s a complicated situation, but he has an amazing arc, learning to accept responsibility for his mistakes and the importance of hard work. I listened to this on audiobook and I couldn’t stop listening to it because it really felt real and I felt every emotions characters were going through. First Line Friday: “When it comes to the streets, there’s rules.” Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas is the prequel to The Hate U Give. The title Concrete Rose comes from the poem by Tupac Shakur called “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” and is about Maverick (the main character from The Hate U Give’s dad) a 17 year old boy who is facing grown up choices. His father is the leader of a gang and he is expected to follow in his footsteps, but certain events take place that make Maverick think maybe he doesn’t want that life for himself. I love that Angie Thomas based these two novel titles on Tupac quotes. Did you know he wrote poetry? You should check out his other poetry if you’re into that sort of thing. Read the poem and see if you can understand the symbolism of The Concrete Rose. My brother and SIL also gave me a medieval dragon notebook and “Cain’s Jawbone.” I’m a little nervous about Cain’s Jawbone; it’s printed out of order, so you have to take all the pages out and re-order them manually. She shared details about the student-led activities currently underway as part of our district's Black History Month Celebration. The BSU is partnering with Respond to Racism to host a screening of the impactful movie "The Hate You Give" at the United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 24, at noon. We extend a warm invitation to the entire community; this fundraiser is open to the public. Following her presentation, the school board took action by officially proclaiming Black History Month in our school district. In LOSD, our celebration of Black History extends far beyond just this month; it is a year-round commitment. been a hot minute since I posted on my feed. I'm seeing a lot of people looking back at 2023, whereas I've barely registered the change because nothing has changed? we all use new year's as an excuse to reinvent and get into good habits that we never follow through with, when we should be doing that all year round, to start bettering ourselves the moment we realise we want to. Where to start? On a personal level, it's one of the better ones I've had in the last few years, but still nothing exceptional or noteworthy. I didn't set out any goals or have any idea what I hoped to do. As far as achievements go, there are things I've done to be proud of and how I've grown since the last orbit around the sun. But I just never put much weight on them. Never really give it the time and space. I always lower my expectations — so, I end up not caring about anything I do achieve. But in other things, I flopped so hard it's embarrassing lol (I read....like...no books in 2023.) But considering the state of the world we left 2023 in, I just refuse to believe there is any good change that has happened. 2024 isn't filled with hope for me and MANY others. It's just another day of witnessing horrors and having to speak up for those whose voices the world leaders ignore. So, it's hard to look back on anything I did and any achievements because it feels like I've not done enough. We're simply not doing enough, at least not on a humanitarian level. 2024 is another day.
