I follow @wordsleuth on Instagram. He posts words—usually obscure or underused words—and their definitions. After six words, he challenges writers to create stories or poems that include all six of the latest words. He had been reaching out to me about these challenges, and he finally caught me at a good time: spring break. I’m glad he didn’t give up. The story featured in the last post was my entry to the challenge. The six words I had to include were (1) effervescent, (2) egregious, (3) conundrum, (4) evocative, (5) puerile, and (6) librocubicularist. I’m proud of how the story came out. It’s a glimpse into the life of an intelligent but socially awkward college student. I had to trim down the story to fit in an Instagram comment, but you can find the original on my website: https://isaacphilips.com/librocubicularist/ #WritingWednesday #letsWordImprov #FlashFiction #ShortStory #WritingChallenges #WritingCommunity #ShortStories #AmWriting #6words1story #WordGame

I, Word Sleuth, am on a quest to find and use new words. So, I came up with WORD IMPROV, a writing prompt challenge where participants compose and share “Stories” (broadly defined as tales, skits, verses, poems, songs, etc.) which incorporate a set of “new” words. The words are defined prior to the start of the challenge and are usually presented as a set of nine, six or three words per Word Improv challenge. Example: “Virgos can be PERSNICKETY, but they are also a highly faithful sign.” Word found through #crowdwording (i.e., the practice of obtaining new words by soliciting suggestions from others, typically via the internet); word submitted by: @ronsmith242 on 9/30/23 *** ✍🏼 *** Disclosures, et cetera: Word Improv by @WordSleuth is a fun, challenging and social way to find and use new words! The featured words come from crowdwording (i.e., the word I made up to describe the practice of obtaining new words by soliciting suggestions from others, typically via the internet), materials I come across (such as magazines, books, movies, etc.) or everyday conversation. I always credit the source of the featured word. Definitions for featured words typically come from @merriamwebster or @dictionarycom , the Instagram accounts I follow as a form of citation. However, the English language is complex so do not rely exclusively on the posted definitions as no representation is made as to the accuracy or completeness of the definitions provided. As an aside, a fun word I came up with is WORDOTIC (i.e., a person who is extremely interested in words and their use; word nerd).
