Yesterday by Agota Kristof 🦖🦖🦖🦖 An exiled man identifies a woman from his home country and falls in love. He’s also just a little bit creepy and crazy. At first I thought that this was written before the Trilogy, but apparently it isn’t, which is strange, as it is very similar, just not as good. Don’t get me wrong – it is good, but not as good as the Notebook Trilogy. However, that is somewhat problematic when it comes to a novel like this. If you are thinking about reading a novel by Kristof – go for the Notebook Trilogy. If you are thinking about reading a novel about someone who is crazy and about to do something bad – look in the photo. Yesterday is really short, which I love at the moment (babies are awesome, just not for my ability to concentrate). What’s the best short novel you’ve read lately? Dieser herausragenden Erzählerin gebührt meines Erachtens viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Claire Keegan zählt für mich zu den ganz großen Stimmen der heutigen Literatur und stand nicht umsonst auf der Shortlist zum Booker Prize 2022 mit ihrem Roman KLEINE DINGE. Nun hat sie mit ihrem neuen Buch REICHLICH SPÄT – alle drei übrigens in der Übersetzung von Hans-Christian Oeser - auch wieder einen knappen, nur 55 Seiten kurzen Text geschrieben, der leise daherkommt und so viel zwischen den Zeilen zu sagen hat. Ich möchte hier einfach auf diese Autorin und ihre reichhaltigen Texte hinweisen und sie allen ans Herz legen, die die einzigartigen Stimmen in dieser großen Vielfalt der Buchwelt wünschen. Claire Keegan ist eine davon, einzigartig. Eh oh owalah abis Lebaran koq Donat bawa ceweknya yg lagi hamidun ke toko 😭😭😭😭 dan gw kasih nama aja Emping Monochrome. Tadinya gak niat ngasih ayam rebus Donat buat Emping, eh malah Donat yg mengalah, ngasih buat Emping. Jadilah kerjaan dobel², kalau ngasih makan Donat kudu ngasih Emping juga. Emping malah lebih standby di toko dari buka sampai menjelang tutup toko 😭😭😭😭 Cake juga makin aktif ekspansi penjelajahannya. Bukan cuma ke dlm rumah koko gw yg sebelah rumah, skrg manjat tembok ke ujung yg gak bisa dijangkau. Mana belakang tembok rumah itu udah ky hutan 😭😭😭😭 Beneran capek jagain kucing lasak satu ini. Belum lagi kantin langganan tutup menjelang Lebaran dan sampai skrg gak jelas kapan buka lagi krn masih di Aussie. Jadilah kudu masak sehari 2 kali. Udah malam rasanya jg udah capek. Bobo aja. Akhir bulan kukira bisa nambah satu buku, eh abis belanja di Diamond ternyata dpt bulanan stl terakhir bulan Januari kmrn. Dah lah, pegel, rada sakit kepala gara² para kucing (yg di luar mau masuk, yg di dalam mau keluar), udah campur baur semua. Gak sakit tergeletak aja udah bersyukur. I’m starting a series of posts about Contemporary Literature (authors born in the 20th Century) which is one of my specialties 🤣, although I abandoned it for quite a while. Ian McEwan it’s a prolific and famous rewarded British novelist. I love his capacity to capture the human essence of the characters while proposing situations and environments that will challenge their psyche and transform them. Great authors give life to imaginary people in a way that speaks right to the heart of the reader, taking them into a journey of self reflection too. My favourite book it’s “Atonement”: Rich, deep, historical, dramatic, beautiful, raw, poetic… it’s a master piece. Mc Ewan is considered one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. 🌻Book Review🌻 Although this is the third book of the trilogy consisting of the real-life Ferriday-Woolsey family, you can easily read any of the books in any order. The story of this book takes place during the Civil War, and it is about the strong and determined women of the Woolsey family, as told from the viewpoint of Georgeanne. Their family helps in bringing relief as nurses and such to all who are suffering, most importantly, no matter their color or which side of the war they're on. The story also follows Jemma, a sixteen-year-old who is enslaved with the rest of her family on a plantation in Maryland. The first half of the book is on the slow side as you get to know the characters more. However, it eventually picks up pace as these characters cross paths. As far as the historical aspects of the book, there was a lot of information, which I both enjoyed but also felt like it sometimes slowed down parts too. Both the story and the real-life period of time were brutal and heartbreaking, as people were kept as slaves and the country was at odds with one another as families, neighbors, and friends were literally fighting one another. The one thing this story does is highlight not only all of that, but something I know really nothing about: the courageous women who stepped up to work as nurses and fought to change the course of the future for women to come vs. simply the day-to-day tasks of having babies, cooking, cleaning, etc. with little to no education. ♣️Book Review♣️ This is a very touching story about the main character, Fenna, who grows up learning all she can about the world of magic. Houdini in particular is a serious muse for her, and so she seeks to become as great of an illusionist as he was. However, her life eventually takes her on a journey and path she never would have imagined and the world at large with World War II, all while facing things from her past. When it comes to the writing, it took me a couple of chapters to get into this, but once I did, it was more or less a page turner. This was a well-developed, multiple time-line narrative about loss, courage, war, and the military at the time. The part about magic and illusionists I found interesting, along with the elements of romance mixed throughout too. Overall, I thought this was a well-written and engaging book, and I also enjoyed reading McMorris's notes in the end about more of the history and inspiration for this novel. 📚 #BOOKREVIEW 📚 Murder on Demand (The Morning Show Murders, Book 4) by Al Roker and Mark Costello ⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 264 / Genre: Murder Mystery Did you know that Today Show weatherman Al Roker is also an author? He’s co-authored a series called The Morning Show Murders and the fourth book in the series, Murder on Demand, was just released a few days ago. I only found out about this series when I requested the NetGalley ARC, so I haven’t read the other books. You could dive into this one without reading the others because it’s mostly about this one case, but it seems to me like the other books are probably better than this one. The main character of this book, Billy Blessing, was a chef at his own hot NYC restaurant and he had a regular segment on a morning news show. Sounds interesting, right? Well, by the fourth book in this series, he’s lost all his money and is working as a chef in a restaurant out on Long Island. He’s hired by a mysterious woman who asks him to look into the disappearance of her father. Her father is a fisherman, and I got bored pretty quickly with all the fisherman and boating talk. So this was just an OK mystery for me. Perhaps if I had the audiobook, which is narrated by Al Roker, it might have been more interesting.
