A Beautiful Rival - Gill Paul ‘There are no ugly women, only lazy ones’ The fictional story of two powerhouse women: Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. The rivalry between these business women proved their tenacity against all odds. Competing in a male-dominant business world, facing two world wars, the depression and stock market crash, they managed to keep their businesses flourishing. The level of corporate espionage and backstabbing was incredible- and yet- 8 hour cream is still a best seller! Make-up is your armour! In reality, the two women never met and I’m not sure how much of Elizabeth Arden’s antisemitic notions are fictionalised - but real events form the cornerstone of this novel which proved that with enough chutzpah, anything is possible. #24thbookoftheyear #24thbookof2024 #reader #reading #readingaddict #readingchallenge #readersofinstagram #books #historicalfiction #abeautifulrival #gillpaul @gill.paul1

Anyone else like reading books where either the main character or a character in the book is a real person? I really enjoy fictional books centred around real people (or even when a real person makes a cameo appearance in a book), here are a few I have read that I highly recommend… Her Lost Words: A Novel of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley by Stephanie Marie Thornton – Mary Shelley was the author of Frankenstein and Mary was her mother also groundbreaking with her book A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. If you are looking for a book about women before their time, this is the book for you. A Beautiful Rival: A Novel of Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden by Gill Paul – I previously had not heard of Helena Rubin or knew much about Elizabeth Arden (except being a cosmetics company) so there was much to learn about these women who were self-made millionaires. I highly recommend this book. Starring Adele Astaire by Eliza Knight – This is a great book where one of the main characters is Fred Astaire’s sister Adele and we follow her life from her time on stage to living in a castle in Ireland, this was a really good read. Strangers in the Night: A Novel of Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner by Heather Webb – This is an interesting and engaging read about two larger than life people, set in the 1940’s and 1950’s there is lots to learn and absorb in this book, it is great read. Can’t We Be Friends: A Novel of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe by Denny S. Bryce and Eliza Knight – The authors of this book clearly did a lot of research to write this book, it was such a great read. If you are interested in the 1950’s or iconic people, this is the book for you. Question – do you like fictional books that include real people either as a main character or as a cameo appearance? #herlostwords #stephaniemariethornton #marywollstonecraft #maryshelley #frankenstein #abeautifulrival #gillpaul #helenarubinstein #elizabetharden #starringadeleastaire #elizaknight #adeleastaire #strangersinthenight #msheatherwebb #franksinatra #avagardner #cantwebefriends #dennysbryce #ellafitzgerald #marilynmonroe #authorcollaboration #biographicalfiction #librarybooks #readtolearn #booklover

#BookReview | #ABeautifulRival Another fabulous historical fiction novel by Gill Paul. I adored this novel of Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden, two cutthroat businesswomen and rivals who invented the beauty industry in the early twentieth century. Told through alternating chapters, we follow the stories of Helena Rubenstein, a Jew from Krakow, Poland, whose father throws her out when she falls in love with a Catholic Pole – she then goes on to build her fame and fortune alone – and Elizabeth Arden, from a dirt-poor family in Canada who works hard to ensure her humble roots are never discovered as she climbs the ladder of success with bon ton New York. Rubenstein and Arden go head-to-head to ascend to the role of queen of the New York beauty industry, and they will stop at nothing to emerge victorious. A fabulous and well-written tale of two brilliant and ruthless beauty moguls, well ahead of their time. A highly recommended read. #BookReviews #GillPaul #Bookstagram #HistoricalFiction

✨𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪✨ Happy Tuesday everyone, I have a fascinating story to share with you today! Who would have guessed that the business of making women beautiful was so cutthroat? In this stunning new novel, bestselling author @gill.paul1 reveals the unknown history of cosmetic titans Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein and their infamous rivalry that spanned not only decades, but also broken marriages, personal tragedies, and a world that was changing dramatically for women—perfect for fans of Fiona Davis, Marie Benedict, and Beatriz Williams. What a fantastic story, I loved everything about it. I had no idea of the rivalry between these two icons and it was truly fascinating to learn about it. A Beautiful Rival By: @gill.paul1 Synopsis Swipe for Goodreads Synopsis My thoughts What better way to celebrate Women’s History Month - a historical fiction novel featuring not one but two amazing women. This saga depicts the lives and rivalries between Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. Whilst I was familiar with both beauty brands, I wasn’t aware of the women themselves of their epic rivalry. I couldn’t put the novel down as I read about how they copied each other’s products, stole each other’s employees (and ex- husbands!) and planted spies. Competition aside, I really enjoyed getting to know each of the women and their stories. We are introduced to the women in 1915 and get to know their back stories, motivations and then see their lives - the triumphs and tragedies until they both pass away. I enjoyed seeing both women’s poor of views and grew to admire each of the women for their achievements and how they succeeded in a man’s world and through wars and The Great Depression. Elizabeth was a trail blazer who helped move make up and cosmetics from being something that women on the town wore to everyday women. Helena overcame great adversity in the war and was more focused on the science. I didn’t realize she had an Australian connection. Thoroughly researched I really felt like I was reading their diaries at times as both women really came to life. QOTD: who is a historical woman you admire? #womeninhistorymonth #historicalfiction #fivestarread #bookreview #bookrecommendations #abeautifulrival #auskiwibooksta

💕February Reads💕      Honestly, this month was just ok with reading. Some books were really great to read. But I didn’t have any amazing 5 ⭐️ reads. It’s also been a busy month with kids in sports, life and work so I didn’t feel like I was really able to get invested in my reading. That said, still some good books that I would recommend.      💕The Gunner Girls – interesting read on WWII, really enjoyed the second half of the book      💕A Beautiful Rival – Gill Paul writes another good read about two female leaders in the make up industry. I appreciate how she writes her narrative of real – life events and people. Always engaging.      💕Still Here – This was a great mystery/thriller. It’s part of a series, which I would recommend reading first, but not totally necessary.      💕The Dubrovnik Book Club – This unfortunatly was a DNF for me. I liked the premise / idea but just struggled to get into the story. I enjoyed the description of the scenery. I could really picture being in Dubrovnik.      💕The Anatomy of Matchmaking – Totally refreshing romance. Really enjoyed.      💕End Credits – Really interesting memoir about writing in Hollywood      𝐐𝐎𝐓𝐃- 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡?      #books #thegunnergirlseviesstory #stillhere #abeautifulrival #theanatomyofmatchmaking #endcredits #februaryreads #2024reads #monthlyreading #booksta #booklover📚 #bookreviews #bookcommunity #readmorebooks

“She was worried, though. All things Parisian were in vogue. There was a lot of sympathy for the French because of the war in Europe and, from what she had seen in Paris, Madame Rubinstein didn’t hesitate to promote herself. But she, Elizabeth Arden, was founder and sole owner of the most successful beauty brand in America, having outstripped all the other pretenders with her upmarket packaging, her clever advertising, and her stylishly decorated salons. She was well connected in this city. Women knew and trusted her.” #ABeautifulRival #GillPaul #fiction #historicalfiction #historical #newyork #drama #womensfiction #usa #FebruaryReads

📖Two for Tuesday📖  💕Gill Paul 💕    I read my first Gill Paul book last year and loved her writing style. Historical novels are a favourite genre of mine, and I enjoyed how Gill Paul tells the story of her characters and provides a realistic insight to the era she is sharing. Understanding this is her take on what took place, she writes as though you are living in that world. She also writes about strong female characters which is a joy to read, especially in historical fiction.     𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚: Loved this book. It was a 5⭐ read for me. I enjoyed the storytelling, the intrigue, the fashion, the era, the strong women. It was great. I’ve already written a review of this book, so check it out if you are interested.     𝐀 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥: This was an interesting book about Helen Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden and the rise of their respective beauty empires. The cutthroat nature of business, the drive of powerful women, the challenges of not only being pioneers in their industry but that of the times.     My favourite is still Jackie and Maria, so if you are looking to try one her books I recommend you start there. Next on my list, maybe The Manhattan Girls for a little 1920’s era or The Secret Wife.     𝘘𝘖𝘛𝘋: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰𝘸?     #books#abeautifulrival #jackieandmaria #gillpaul #lovetoread #twofortuesday #bookcommunity #bookthoughts #readslikeamom #bookishlove #bookreviewer #bookstagrammer #booknerd

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really like these period novels based on the lives of real women from history. A Beautiful Rival by Gill Paul tells the story of the rivalry between cosmetic pioneers Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. They were both driven, controlling, perfectionists who steered their companies through pandemics, depressions and wars. Though they achieved great successes with their respective businesses, their personal lives often suffered. #threefriendsandafork #mybooktrips #bookatrip #booktripper #helenarubinsteincosmetics #elizabetharden #gillpaulauthor #abeautifulrival

How wonderful to see THE LIZ TAYLOR RING on this fabulous list of Best Historical Fiction of 2023! Thank you @rachels.booknook !! 💙💎💙 Posted @withregram • @rachels.booknook Historical fiction is one of my favourite genres (I do have a degree in history after all). I love learning about people and events of the past through fiction books. I’m definitely the one to go down the Wikipedia rabbit hole while reading a historical fiction novel to see what exactly in the book is accurate. I also really appreciate authors’ notes at the end detailing their research process and outlining some of the actual facts of the topic. Three of these books will be on my favourite books of 2023 list still to come, but because I love the genre so much, I wanted to do a separate best of historical fiction post so I could highlight some more great books I read this year. The schedule for the last two months of the year on my podcast (link in bio): This Monday, I'm joined by Gill Paul to discuss A Beautiful Rival, her latest book which looks at the lives and competing careers of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. It's got a lot about the cosmetics industry of the early 20th century, but also the advertising and marketing which was awesome to read about. On Monday 27th, Radhika Sanghani joins me to discuss her hilarious yet poignant I Wish We Weren't Related, which focuses on Reeva (and her sisters) whose father has just died. Reeva, Sita and Jaya have to lead the traditional Hindu rites, which is difficult because they don't know much about the rites. But it's particularly difficult because they were told their father had already died decades ago. And on Monday 11th December, I'm joined by Karen Hamilton to discuss The Contest, a thriller with a difference. Privileged luxury travel company employees take a group of ultra-wealthy people to Mt Kilimanjaro, competing to see who can reach the summit the fastest while also wowing their guests with luxurious extras. But there's a killer amongst the group - the reader knows it before they do - and there are a good few possibilities. 💄🧴A Beautiful Rival tells the story of the two women who created the beauty industry at a time when the business world was not kind to women entrepreneurs (or women in general). Elizabeth Arden was born into poverty and fought her way to a multi-million dollar company through hard work, cunning and heartlessness. Helena Rubinstein, a Jewish woman from Poland, who was thrown out of her parent’s home after she refused to marry the man picked by her father, also had to build a company from scratch with the same cutthroat attitude that Elizabeth had, but even with her corporate spies and competitive nature, she did it with more heart. I would say that the environment of misogyny was what kept the women from being allies, but I also think that Elizabeth never saw past her snobbery, xenophobia and anti semitism - which is contrasted with the fact that Helena, while ruthless, was only ruthless in business. While I really didn’t like Elizabeth (her hypocrisy and anti semitism was a lot) I had respect for both women who created an industry where one hadn’t existed before, which has since been imitated time and again - and they did it in a era where women were not respected. ✨✨My Review I enjoyed the novel and how @gill.paul1 had every other chapter switch between the two women’s perspective/narrative. I don’t know how much was a fictional augmentation but I enjoyed the story of both women’s lives. Both made a lot of personal sacrifices for their work at a time where I don’t think there was much choice. I think Paul did a good job in painting a historical backdrop as to what was happening at the time these women were building their rivaling companies. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ QOTD: Do you have a beauty regimen or a favorite beauty product? #abeautifulrival #gillpaul #bookstagram

NEW YORK 🇺🇸 A Beautiful Rival by Gill Paul Elizabeth Arden and Helen Rubinstein have always had prominence in any beauty department, perhaps with Elizabeth Arden now having the edge. This is the story behind the creation and development of each brand and how each evolved under the leadership of one woman. These were two women operating at the same time, in a man’s world, determined to succeed and out-do the other. Elizabeth Arden (born as Florence Nightingale Graham) came from a very poor farming background, and Helena Rubinstein came from Poland, having been banished from her parents’ door for not agreeing to marry the man chosen for her. She was also Jewish and even in New York, when she arrived, there was discrimination and anti-Jewish sentiment, which at times proved to be a stumbling block to her enterprise – but determination and stoicism won out. The women run parallel enterprises, each taking a slightly different tack, each holding a singular vision about the development of her own company, determined to hold onto the reins and maintain control. Expansion across the United States and into Europe ensued, each travelling back and forth between business venues, whilst managing her personal life. 📚 Tap 🔗 in bio for full review 📚 #tripfiction #armchairtravel #travelbybook #triplit #literarytourism #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #destinationfiction #translatedfiction #booksetin #books #fiction #literature #fiction #readtheworld #amreading #bookrecommendation #armchairtravel #travelfiction #newyork #paris #london #helenrubinstein #elizabetharden #abeautifulrival #gillpaul

💄𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑴𝒂𝒊𝒍👗 I was really excited to receive a copy of 𝐀 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 by 𝐆𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥, courtesy of @bibliolifestyle & @williammorrowbooks, because the story of the famous rivalry between Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein sounds riveting! I can't wait to immerse myself in this one to learn more about the two creative, ambitious, & tenacious icons. The book was published 𝘚𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝟻, 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟹, & is available now. 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴: They could have been allies: two self-made millionaires who invented a global industry in an era when being a wife & mother was supposed to be a woman’s highest goal. Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein each founded empires built on grit & determination . . . yet they became locked in a feud spanning 3 continents, 2 world wars, & the Great Depression. Brought up in poverty, Canadian-born Arden changed popular opinion about makeup. She persuaded women from all walks of life to buy skincare products, promising them youth & beauty. Rubinstein left her native Poland & launched her company with scientific claims about miracle creams & anti-aging herbs. When it came to business, nothing was off-limits: poaching employees, copying products, planting spies, hiring ex-husbands, & one-upping each other every chance they had. It was a rivalry from which there was no surrender! Through it all, they were two bold, brazen women determined to succeed . . . no matter the personal cost. A BEAUTIFUL RIVAL Gill Paul @gill.paul1 https://books2read.com/u/4jBZGZ @lisaflanaganvoice WWII Historical / Biographical Fiction Both Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein were driven to succeed in the beauty business. Elizabeth was raised by her widower father on a small farm in Canada and many times went to bed hungry. Helena was disowned by her father in Poland when she fell in love with a non-Jewish boy and refused to marry the man her father had chosen for her. Elizabeth Arden thwarted Helena Rubinstein’s first attempted to open a salon on Fifth Avenue in New York and Helena Rubinstein planted a spy in Elizabeth’s salon that allowed her access to her sales records. Both were driven to succeed and spent money lavishly maintaining the petty rivalry until Helena Rubinstein’s death. This look at the early days of the beauty industry features two well-known women. It was interesting to see behind the glossy curtain to the reality of both women’s situations. The shocking extent they took this rivalry was voiced by narrator Lisa Flanagan taking readers back in time. I recommend this for WWII history buffs. #ABeautifulRival #qotd💭 What was the very first brand of fancy makeup you ever heard of?

This historical fiction novel is based on the history between two cosmetic titans Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein - two self-made millionaires who invented a global industry, in an era when wife and mother were supposed to be the highest goals for women. These two had an infamous rivalry that spanned decades, locked in a feud that spanned three continents, two world wars, and the Great Depression. When it came to business, nothing was off limits: poaching each other’s employees, copying products, planting spies, hiring ex-husbands, and one-upping each other every chance they had! A Beautiful Rival by @gill.paul1 Publication Date: September 5, 2023 Thank you partners @bibliolifestyle and @williammorrowbooks for the #gifted copy. I have never been into fashion or makeup so I wasn’t sure if I would really care about the rivalry between Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein (to be honest, I didn’t even know who Helena Rubinstein was). But from the beginning I was immersed in the story and I was curious to see what was going on in each of their lives. Neither woman was one I would have been friends with and I did not agree with their disdain for one another, but the story was so interesting and exactly the type of historical fiction I like - learning about people and a time I am unfamiliar with from a unique perspective. —Book Tour— Title: A Beautiful Rival Author: Gill Paul Publisher: William Morrow @williammorrowbooks Genre: Historical Fiction Pub Day: 9/5/23 Thank you, partner @bibliolifestyle + @williammorrowbooks for the #gifted copy and having me on this book tour! Historical Fiction fans who are looking for something a little more light and fun, do I have the book for you! A Beautiful Rival by Gill Paul is a dishy cat and mouse tale about beauty industry legends Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein. It takes place from the beginning of 1915 all through the end of 1946 with back and forth timelines narrated by each woman. The title is spot on because boy did these women have a rivalry! They were always one-upping each other getting ahold of each other’s products and testing the ingredients; Helena even was able to have a spy working for Elizabeth for quite sometime. They hired ex-husbands and made friends with each others circles to get the dirt on each others businesses and lives. This book covers: ▪️Anitsemitism ▪️WWI ▪️Stock market crash in London ▪️Stock market crash in US ▪️When Hilter was rising to power and people liked him 🤯 ▪️WWII Rating: I was really invested in this book for the first 100 pages then it sort of got a little repetitive and tiresome. However, I did read this in a day and overall can say I enjoyed it. A change of pace from heavier HF, though it does take place over of quite a few important events! I loved hearing about Elizabeth Arden’s red doors on Fifth Ave. Prior to this book I wasn’t as familiar with Helena Rubinstein. It looks like her company was sold in the 60s after her death and is what L’Oreal is now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Synopsis 📌 in comments ✨QOTD: What is your favorite beauty product? 🏷️: #bigskybooks #bibliolifestyle #gillpaul #abeautifulrival #historicalfiction #womensfiction #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #elizabetharden #booktour #bookfeature #bookthoughts

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting access to this book in exchange for my honest review. This book was very captivating, and I did enjoy reading it. However, at some points, the story was slightly boring. However, I did enjoy reading about the well-known makeup stylists Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein. With that being said, I think I enjoyed Gill Paul's book about Dorthy Parker a little better than this one. However, I would definitely be open to reading another book by Gill Paul in the future! #bookstagram #book #bookworm #abeautifulrival #netgalley #arc #read #reading #readinglist #bookreview #history #makeup #women #womenempowerment

°•°•° BOOK TOUR AND REVIEW °•°•°. . . Gifted. AD PR. Tour hosted by @randomthingstours . . A BEAUTIFUL RIVAL by GILL PAUL @gill.paul1 @williammorrowbooks . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours. A Beautiful Rival is the second book by Gill Paul that I've had the pleasure of reading and won't be the last. In this book, we follow two of the queens of the beauty industry; Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. The book begins in 1915 at the start of WW1, and we follow both women across the book with chapters dedicated to both of them. These women would have made a formidable team if they'd have become friends or business partners instead of rivals of their trade. I loved learning more about both women (who were both ruthless, strong, and determined), and although I didn't particularly like them, I loved learning about their businesses, personal lives, and careers. They are both inspirational women for their times and broke the glass ceiling of the beauty empire, so to speak. Gill Paul has done another fabulous job of blending fact with fiction and had me hooked from the first few chapters. . . QOTD. What women do you admire through history? AD/PR Today it’s my stop on the blog tour for the latest novel from Gill Paul which I LOVED! #ABeautifulRival @gill.paul1 is out now from @avonbooksuk and I highly recommend it if you want to know more about the lives of, and the rivalry between, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. Fascinating! MY REVIEW Gill Paul has produced yet another wonderfully engrossing novel, looking at the little known lives of some of the most famous women in history. A Beautiful Rival is a blend of Gill’s brilliantly researched facts plus believable fiction surrounding the lives and careers of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein, two giant names in the beauty industry. So how did they make their fortunes? Spectacularly lavish settings, famous names, luxury travel is all within these pages. The book is written in alternating chapters by each of the two women. Gill portrays the ongoing rivalry between the two women, sparked by Rubinstein’s move into America where Arden was well known and Queen Bee of the beauty industry. She was not at all happy at the appearance of this Jewish woman, trying to outdo her. Oh I just loved reading about the lengths each of them went to, to outdo the other. More salons, more products, more lavish decor, even planting spies in the salons and copying recipes! Gill also covers their personal lives. Arden never wanted to marry, and Rubenstein married a philanderer and had two sons but wasn’t particularly maternal and didn’t get very involved in their lives as they were growing up. She was far too focussed on her business. Two very similar ladies, full of personal insecurities and worries about their empires. If it were not for their rivalry, no doubt they could have been friends! I absolutely devoured this! Thank you Avon Books for my early review copy and Anne @randomthingstours for my spot on the tour. #BookReview #5starbook #ElizabethArden #helenarubinstein #GillPaul
