The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden is the second book in The Winternight Trilogy in which we see Vasilisa grow much stronger as a development and her journey further in the story and kingdom. I loved the Russian folklore, mythical, and fairytale aspect of this one with the bear that killed her father, the rituals, etc. I wished the book had a stronger magic system. I loved Vasya and Solovey's connection and communication throughout the book. We can see their connection and relationship built along with some minor humor hinted at here and there. Her gift has won her the attention and affection of Morozko Frost, the winter demon from the stories. I cannot wait to see how Katherine Arden wraps up this beautiful, whimsical story in her third and concluding book for this trilogy. I will read every book this author has to write. Then comes another layer to the story with Grand Prince and the plotting against him. The villains in the Prophecies of Fate sereis are based around the legends of two well known Arthurian characters (who also happen to be two of my favourite villains of all time): Morgan le Fay and her son Mordred. Morgan le Fay grew up living in Camelot as the only child of the Duke of Gorlois and never copes well at the news of his death by the hand of King Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon. In fact, my short story, Fire & Ice goes into this background, detailing the revenge she takes upon Uther (if you haven’t read it, head over to my YouTube channel to hear me reading it or join my newsletter to get it for free). She doesn’t stop there, however, and spends her life training her son, Mordred, to seek revenge upon King Arthur so that they can reclaim Camelot. Mordred eventually takes Arthur’s life in the Battle of Camlann but, in doing so, prompts Merlin to seek out the son of Kind Arthur (whom he had transported to another time and place) and bring him back to Camelot to defend his father’s legacy. Both Mordred and Morgan are power hungry and hell-bent on revenge and both are prepared to go all out to get what they want, even if that means destroying the lives of those around them. The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden is the first book in the widely known 'The Winternight Trilogy'. It is a perfect mix of historical fiction, fantasy and mythology fairy tales from Russian literature with a very lucid and whimsical writing style. The atmosphere and world building of this one is very out of the box and different from the regular fantasy novels which we see these days. Vasilisa Petrovna (Vasya) and the other characters ought to be my favorite since they are so well developed and written in the best way possible. Although the book has slow pacing, I think this is one of those where the beauty lies in the atmospheric world building. This is one of those haunting beautiful books which is written in the most whimsical and fun way possible. The Severed Thread, sequel to The Bone Spindle. A gender-flipped Sleeping Beauty retelling. I've been meaning to finish this series for ages, but there were always other books I had to finish first. I'm a sucker for the heroine rescuing her dashing prince! We got more of Briar Rose in this book too, and explored Shane's and Red's relationship. While Red isn't my favorite point of view character, I liked her redemption arc throughout the story. And I think Shane might be my favorite 😊 The sleeping curse might be broken, but the story doesn't end there. I'm still working my way through the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. "Everblaze" is book 3. The series has 9 books with a 10th on the way, so I guess I'll be reading it for a while 😅 This series is a classic middle grade fantasy, where the heroine is constantly discovering new, unique powers and breaks the rules to uncover secrets of her magical world. Naomi Novik is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. “His Majesty’s Dragon” is a love story, in which our protagonist falls for his dragon akin to a new parent loving their child. The tenderness between Laurence and Temeraire is one of the highlights of this story. The second book picks off soon after the first leaves off, and expands on the world and dragon lore. It calls into question the British view and treatment of dragons. Readers may find themselves re-evaluating their own views of the characters as the story progresses, in a very interesting way. The previous books I read from Naomi Novik were feminist fairytale retellings. The Temeraire series has a vastly different feel from her previous books— not just in the plot, but in the tone as well. Naomi captures how people from the Napoleonic era would speak and think flawlessly. Let me tell you, changing your writing style so drastically that a book seems to be written by a completely different author is extremely difficult. Naomi Novik is a talented author. A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid is a gothic, fae fantasy romance with elements of mystery and thriller, even dark academia to some extent. It has the perfect atmospheric writing style and brilliant storytelling done by the author. This is my first Ava Reid, and the moment I started reading it, I knew this one would be added to my top standalone fantasy reads. Effy Sayre and Preston Héloury form the perfect pair and duo for their literary expeditions and mysteries, which are unreal via books and lessons along the way. The book explores the themes of hope, love, friendships, finding the way forward, winning against all odds, etc. I loved the elements of the contest, redesigning the house of the author, etc. It was a perfect balance or bridge between the two components of Effy's life. I must say that I fully entrust Ava Reid to deliver epic romances, and the same can be found in Effy and Preston's chemistry, through slow-burn, academic rivals to liking, etc. This is one of those books where it starts slowly, lets you settle in well, and then takes you on a roll through the lucid writing, twists, and also the perfect ounce of romance. The book has a very satisfactory ending, and it couldn't have been any better. At some point during the book, I also felt it would have been better if we had more personality layers for Preston and even the Fairy King. I am all in for strong female characters, which were delivered very well through Effy, but somewhere development lacked with other side characters. Moreover, the book delivers 10/10 on the cold, gloomy, gothic side of the plot and setting of the book through various descriptions. Somewhere in the Deep by Tanvi Berwah is the second book by the author. Her debut novel was 'Monsters Born and Made'. This one is a YA asian inspired fantasy where we follow our FMC Krescent Dune, a 17-year-old who is buried under her dead parents unfortunate past legacy and debt. This book is going to keep you engrossed from the very start to the very end. It's thrilling, action-packed, keeps you on the edge and I equally loved the sweet chemistry between Rivan and Dune. Their journey beneath the ocean, along with that of other companions and friends, was very entertaining. As someone who enjoys the romance elements as well in fantasy books, this one lacked that part. But equally, the writing style and plot development have improved a lot in comparison to the author's first book. Also, this one is set in the same universe as her first book, MBAM, but runs parallel to the first story, set on a different island. On their expedition, her loyalties are tested, and some dark secrets are revealed. Every time I felt the book was going in a particular direction, there were unpredictable twists and turns, which made the book even more entertaining and enjoyable to read. This is one such book where despite being YA fantasy, children and teenagers would equally enjoy it. It's the perfect escape from reality, along with exploring the most important things in life like love, friendship, trust, kindness, and courage. A fresh take in the Asian Fantasy genre by the author and definitely worth reading for each and every one.

It’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast that was written with the same level of depth as the Twilight series, which I thought was absolutely game changing when I was ~12. . It got half a star for the last 30 pages which were entertaining, so credit where it’s due. . This February, I read "Alcatraz vs The Evil Librarians," a 6 book MG series by Brandon Sanderson. What a blast! On the surface, it’s a classic story of kids who get to be the heroes and stick it to The Man. (The Man being evil librarians.) However, it also teaches kids philosophy and features a deconstruction (and reconstruction) of the child hero archetype. These books are great for both young and older readers. The series starts off as a light-hearted, wacky romp and grows progressively darker as it goes. However, the last book balances the trauma the characters gained from the previous books with a more hopeful tone. I think it leaves the readers with a wonderfully heroic happily ever after and a touch of bittersweet. Book Review - The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons ⭐⭐⭐💫/5 My thoughts: This books was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The narration style is a very interesting choice that provided a unique reading experience. The addition of the footnotes also added some interesting nuance and character to the story. Kihrin is a strong main character. He is easy to like, interesting to follow and has lots of sarcasm and humor to provide comic relief. However, this book is told in very short chapters that alternate between the two timelines. This made the plot of the book difficult to grasp as I never felt really grounded in either story. There is only about 6 months difference between the timelines with overlapping characters in each. It was sometimes difficult to keep track of what happened in each timeline as they didn't feel unique enough. There are also a plethora of side characters and most of them have multiple names for one character. Knowing who people are and how they are connected to each other was a very important part of the book. However, it was extremely difficult to keep the people straight. This made the emotional moments less impactful as it was hard to remember why it would matter or impact the characters. Overall, I think this was a groundwork book and I will read book two to see where the series goes. Then @fairyloot announced their edition and I couldn't believe it.❤️ I immediately started reading when my box arrived and it was absolutely worth it. Since I'm a huge fan of the show Vikings I knew I'd love the world the story is set in. The magical/fantastical touch, with the godly gifted people made it the perfect book. The MC are just great and work perfectly together. Freya is a great FMC and my new no.1 shieldmaiden. I just know this will be one of my new favourite serieses. In the end I was lucky to get all the editions I wanted. I am so happy to have the US foiled edges because I had little hope I'd get it from my german bookstore (can't stop looking at this shiny beauty😁) I'll definitely read it again soon.
