Wouldn’t you love to read about the villain breaking into the hero’s house, only to get caught because he entered one of the kids’ bedrooms and wiped out by stepping on a Tonka truck? Using all 5 senses, describe your bedroom, as if it isn’t yours. It will make you see it with new eyes. Here are the impressions from my bedroom: 👀Sight: Shaded from evening sun. Scraping on stone of someone working outside. Bird chirps 👏Touch: Cool 👅Taste: N/A 👃Smell: N/A As I wrote this, I began to imagine someone waking in the evening, which would be odd. It immediately begs the question, why? “I lifted my heavy head from my pillow. Shadows had stretched across the house and backyard, deepening all colors to cool shades. The fan turned lazily, the air ruffling my hair. Sitting up, I ran my tongue around my dry mouth. I needed cool. I pulled back my grandmother’s sky blue quilt and dropped lead-lined feet to the floor. A few bird chirps penetrated the four windows facing the backyard. Using the pine nightstand for support, I lunged into a vertical position. I swallowed, my throat feeling sandy. Might as well see if I could make to the bathroom for a drink.” If you want to write a scene set in a bedroom at night, stay up late and write your impressions then. Since I don’t have a lot of time to write, let alone research, I’ve come to rely on using settings I live in for stories. But sometime, we’re so used to our surroundings that we overlook them. So the next three writing prompts are to encourage you to open your eyes, perhaps literally, to your everyday surroundings, starting with asking you to use all 5 senses to describe your road. Or street. Or avenue. Or alley, as the case may be. Sit in your yard, on your porch, on your doorstep, or stand on your sidewalk and take the time to let all five of your sense absorb the setting. Jot down what you perceive. Here’s the list for my road. 👀Sight: White bright sunlight. Dark shadows. Pure blue sky. White puffy clouds. Sunlight darkens as thick white clouds pass over it. 👂Sound: Bird calls. Passing cars. Distant traffic. Swish of river. Wind in tree leaves. 👏Touch: Leaves dry from morning rain. Wind on the back of my neck. 👅Taste: Nothing 👃Smell: Dirt. Grass. Thick, lily-like smell of honeysuckle blossoms. Not use the above perceptions to write a paragraph or paragraphs about this scene. If you know what mood you want this setting to create, then choose the words that will accomplish that. If you’re not sure of the setting’s mood, write the description and see how it makes you feel. I’m going to go for a hint of foreboding, foreshadowing a coming conflict. The morning was everything you’d want in May–bright sunlight, crystal clear blue skies, white puffy clouds sailing across it like fluffy schooners. The breeze ruffled the ends of my hair as I walked down our gravel drive to get the mail, the deep shadows of the budding rosebud trees tracing wild patterns on the fresh grass. As I reached the mailbox, the shadows melted into each other as a huge cloud blocked the sun. The wind chilled the back of my neck. I opened the back of the mailbox, and an envelope, written in cursive, stood out from the ads and bills. I get it… sometimes writing feels more like a chore than the passion-filled process you thought it’d be. I know how badly you want to write this book, but I also know how intense those feelings of resistance can hit. I’ve been there. I’ve felt the same way. A query is not just referencing the letter used by authors who are seeking an agent or publisher for traditional publication. Editors often use queries (questions, in this case) to collaborate and have a conversation with the author in the course of editing. An editor might query when: 📚 they have a question. 📚 they want to confirm whether an edit is OK. 📚 they want to explain a change they made. 📚 they want to direct the author to make a change. 📚 they want to provide a reaction to the story. 📚 they want to introduce or keep consistency. On the other hand, "continual" implies something that occurs repeatedly but with intervals in between. To help people see what it’s like to live another’s life and to feel what they feel. 💜 That’s why it’s so important that authors have empathy as we write. 📚 Book Review 📚 (A non-indie read for this month) I've done things a bit out of order by reading Autumn Krause's second YA book, 𝐵𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑙 𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑌𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒 before her first: 𝐴 𝐷𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑. To be fair, ADFTW was on my TBR list for so long. It just kept getting pushed down because . . . I don't know. Maybe it was because it was a debut book, and I really wasn't sure how good it might be (despite rave reviews). Who knows? Regardless, I read it! And just like BTDKYH, I loved it! Autumn is a natural at creating lush and believable worlds—this time an alternative history Victorian England centered around fashion. In a twist on the classic country girl goes to the big city trope, main character Emmaline strives to make a name for herself in fashion through a Project Runway-style competition at the Fashion House (despite forces that attempt to thwart her efforts at every turn). Krause is fantastic at capturing the emotions of her protagonists. More so than in BTDKYH, I really felt for Emmaline and her struggles. The end of Emmaline's tale came a bit unexpectedly, and in a way, her adventure was just beginning, but it was a fun romp of a story with a unique premise. I'm watching Autumn Krause closely from now on and won't underestimate her again! This might be more of a Plotter's problem, but anyone really can suffer from this. You have been working with this book for so long that it's beginning to feel old to you. You are too close to it. There are a few things you can do about this. 🌟 Get inspired again. Create a story board on Pinterest with images that remind and inspire you of your story. Create playlists to listen to that evoke the mood of the book: that bring back the reason you wanted to write it in the first place. 🌟 Take a break. Allow yourself time away, and WRITE ANOTHER STORY. As long as you are writing, you are making progress, whether it is this story or another. BUT! DO NOT throw it away. Set a goal, and come back to it. 9 times out of 10, this is will solve your boredom and bring you new ideas and inspiration. 🌟 If you are a Plotter, put yourself into some Pantser shoes for a while and brainstorm rabbit trails and plots for fun. Let it be wild, crazy, absurd ideas. Have fun. See what comes of it. You may find some different ideas to freshen up your story. 🌟 Allow a close friend or confidant to read a portion. Sometimes fresh eyes on your story might be just what you need to give you a boost in confidence. If you are blessed enough to have a writers group or a writer friend who GETS IT, plan a visit with them and just chat about your books! (this one really works!) The whole point with these tips is to help make this story come alive to you again. Remember why you wanted to write it in the first place. What helped you out of a boredom rut? I have recently caught the Atlas six bug by the incredibly talent first gen American- Filipino heritage Olivie Blake (the pen name of Alexene Farol Follmouth). Although positioned as a YA Fantasy, I have to say this dives much deeper than the genre typically offers. Olivie has built an increase world of character driven plot which also invites the reader to consider morality, ethics and ultimately the cost of their actions. Six individuals gifted with rare abilities are invited by the Caretaker of Alexandria to complete in a prestigious one year long battle of the mind and wits. There are many interrelated themes: class, access/barriers to knowledge, gender, morality and ethics. Some of the scenes can be quite confronting as there are always naunces and fluidity to the stories we share and tell ourselves. Olivie keeps the suspense going as new depths to each character is revealed through a series of tasks, interactions and dilemmas. At the end, what you chose reveals more about you. I love books which make me think, relate and feel. I found myself rooting for the Assassin, the Soldier and the Villian on more than a few occasions, which suprised me slightly. This fantasy series which has really helped me to enter the realm of dark academia. I love the competitiveness, ruthless and occasional camadarie from The Atlas six. This is the first in a series of three. I have the other two on order now.
