New To Me Author Friday! Featuring: Chigozie Obioma The Fishermen - (Debut) Told from the point of view of nine-year-old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, The Fishermen is the Cain and Abel-esque story of an unforgettable childhood in 1990s Nigeria, in the small town of Akure. When their strict father has to travel to a distant city for work, the brothers take advantage of his extended absence to skip school and go fishing. At the ominous, forbidden nearby river, they meet a dangerous local madman who persuades the oldest of the boys that he is destined to be killed by one of his siblings. What happens next is an almost mythic event whose impact—both tragic and redemptive—will transcend the lives and imaginations of its characters and its readers. Dazzling and viscerally powerful, The Fishermen never leaves Akure but the story it tells has enormous universal appeal. Seen through the prism of one family’s destiny, this is an essential novel about Africa with all of its contradictions—economic, political, and religious—and the epic beauty of its own culture. An Orchestra of Minorities: A contemporary twist on the Odyssey, An Orchestra of Minorities is narrated by the chi, or spirit of a young poultry farmer named Chinonso. His life is set off course when he sees a woman who is about to jump off a bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, he hurls two of his prized chickens off the bridge. The woman, Ndali, is stopped in her tracks. . Chinonso and Ndali fall in love but she is from an educated and wealthy family. When her family objects to the union on the grounds that he is not her social equal, he sells most of his possessions to attend college in Cyprus. But when he arrives in Cyprus, he discovers that he has been utterly duped by the young Nigerian who has made the arrangements for him. Penniless, homeless, we watch as he gets further and further away from his dream and from home. An Orchestra of Minorities is a heart-wrenching epic about destiny and determination. 💛 These novels were included in my last book haul. Have you read either of them? If so, share your thoughts!

295. Booker prize shortlist, 2019.  Chigozie Obioma; An Orchestra of Minorities; Little, Brown; Great Britain.   Obioma’s second novel to be shortlisted for the prize – the story of a young Nigerian poultry farmer who rescues a young woman from a suicide attempt and subsequently attempts to woo her by heading to Cyprus to study.   He runs into a series of problems, and returns to Nigeria greatly damaged by his experiences.   The novel is told as a series of flashbacks by his spiritual guardian to a divine jury sitting in judgement on his human host.   This copy signed, dated and lined by the author.  A gripping story well told, immersed in Nigerian folklore and culture with nods to the Odyssey. #chigozieobioma #anorchestraofminorities #littlebrown #thebookerprize #firstedition  #bookstagram #booktok #bookstofurnisharoom #bookcollector #bibliophile #signed #nigerianfiction

An Orchestra of Minorities - Chigozie Obioma “He had not asked too much of the world. What he had asked recently was simple: just to be with the woman he loved.” Narrated by his chi/spirit, this book follows the life of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose life is upturned after he meets a woman, Ndali, attempting suicide on a bridge. Despite their very contrasting backgrounds, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love, to the displeasure of Ndali’s family. To win Ndali’s family over, Chinonso decides to get an education in Cyprus in barter for his father’s house and his beloved feathered creatures. This book gave me a lot of things to think about, one of them being how seemingly small or insignificant decisions can utterly change the course of our lives. What would have been of Nonso’s life had he decided to drive past Ndali or not seen her at all? Well, we’ll never know. I wanted to like this book more than I did. The beginning completely blew my mind; the narration by the chi was unusual, but I liked it a lot (till I didn’t anymore). Some parts dragged, especially with the chi’s recounting stories from the past. I was, however, intrigued by how colorful the language was. Generally, I think the writer did well portraying the Igbo culture. I liked the Igbo parables and sayings. On the subject of characters, though, I’d have loved it if Ndali’s character had been explored a little bit more. Nonso’s character was one that left me so conflicted. I understand this was a man who had been terribly wronged, but some of his actions were very questionable and left me wondering if he even loved Ndali at all. As much as this was an okay read, I don’t think I’ll be reading anything by this author anytime soon. The pain the characters went through was just too much for me. #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #bookedwithamba #bookstagramghana #bibliophile

BOOK RECOMMENDATION Chinonso and Ndali are in love, but Ndali is from a wealthy family and Chinonso is a young poultry farmer. When her parents object to the union because Chinonso is uneducated, he sells most of his possessions to attend university in Cyprus. Once in Cyprus, Chinonso discovers that all is not what it seems. Furious at a world which continues to relegate him to the sidelines, Chinonso gets further and further away from his dreams, from Ndali and the place he called home. @chigozieobiomaauthor did a thing with this book!!!!! Can’t stop recommending it to my friends who are looking for holiday reads. What’s funny about this experience is that I started to read his The Fishermen one year but never got into it. So I only took this from @torontolibrary because I thought it was amazing that they had 2 Nigerian authors on their display shelf that week so I took both 😁 So unexpected but yeah, this book was an experience and a journey - an amazing one at that. I couldn’t sleep because I just wanted to get to a happy ending but ‘nope, not on my watch,’ the author said! 😁 It’s not a light read in any way but you’ll get sufficiently invested in the story, that I can promise. And the language? It’s amazingly rich. This is a good book. One of my best 2023 reads and I 100% recommend if you’re looking for a holiday read. #chigozieobioma #nigerianauthors #instabook #bookstagram #anorchestraofminorities

If you read Romeo and Juliet, then I think you really should read An Orchestra of Minorities and I'm sure you're wondering why. Well, it's because I think you deserve to read the most tragic love story after Romeo and Juliet. Ndali and Nonso were crazily in love with each other, and Nonso would do just anything to end up with her. This led him to sell all his properties in order to get a university degree in Cyprus. But what happened to Nonso in Cyprus and what fate awaited him when he returned to Nigeria? I did a detailed review of Chigozie Obioma's An Orchestra of Minorities on my YouTube channel. Today we would like to celebrate Nigerian writer Chigozie Obioma. He is best known for writing the novels ‘The Fishermen’ and ‘An Orchestra of Minorities’ , both of which were shortlisted for the Booker Prize in their respective years of publication. ‘The Fishermen’ is a story about four brothers whose childish curious adventure of fishing leads their family into simultaneous heartbreaking scenes of pain and death; after they encounter a dangerous local madman who predicts that the oldest boy will be killed by one of his brothers. ‘An Orchestra of Minorities’ is a heart-breaking story about a Nigerian poultry farmer who sacrifices everything to win the woman he loves. Let’s talk reading challenges. I have participated in one particular reading challenge for years. The Words & Whimsy Reading Challenge is run by volunteers and has a different theme every month. The prompts are all open to interpretation. There are book and photos prompts, group reads, points for reviews and charity donation and author chats. Late last year Words & Whimsy partnered with OwlCrate as they launched The Nest, an ad free app where we talk all things bookish. The app is free and open to everyone, not just OwlCrate subscribers. July’s theme for the reading challenge is The Echoes of Empire. These are some of the recommendations for this month. All of these are from my library except one. Book club Sunday was great as usual. The #dawa had me doing the "Gena wiggle".🤣 This book was so heavy and our conversation turned into therapy 🤭😆. Talk about life be lifein' 🥴. Trigger warning ⚠️ this book tackles themes of love, class, racism, hate, justice, incarceration, and rape Synopsis heart-breaking story about a Nigerian poultry farmer who sacrifices everything to win the woman he loves, by Man Booker Finalist and author of The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma. Set on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria and narrated by a chi, or guardian spirit, AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES tells the story of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose soul is ignited when he sees a woman attempting to jump from a highway bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, Chinonso joins her on the roadside and hurls two of his prized chickens into the water below to express the severity of such a fall. The woman, Ndali, is stopped her in her tracks. Bonded by this night on the bridge, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love. But Ndali is from a wealthy family and struggles to imagine a future near a chicken coop. When her family objects to the union because he is uneducated, Chinonso sells most of his possessions to attend a college in Cyprus. But when he arrives he discovers there is no place at the school for him, and that he has been utterly duped by the young Nigerian who has made the arrangements.. Penniless, homeless, and furious at a world which continues to relegate him to the sidelines, Chinonso gets further away from his dream, from Ndali and the farm he called home. Spanning continents, traversing the earth and cosmic spaces, and told by a narrator who has lived for hundreds of years, the novel is a contemporary twist of Homer's Odyssey. Read 'An Orchestra of Minorities' by Chigozie Obioma a while ago and I'm still processing its impact. This is a truly remarkable work of fiction that dives deep into the human experience, exploring themes of love, sacrifice, ambition, betrayal, and the weight of tradition and ancestry. Obioma's writing is rich, poetic, and vivid, immersing you in the landscapes and cultures of rural Nigeria and the complexities of its people's lives. The story follows the journey of a young poultry farmer named Chinonso, who falls in love with a wealthy young woman named Ndali and sets out on a quest to prove his worth to her family and society, taking him through trials and tribulations that challenge his faith and his sense of self. But what makes "An Orchestra of Minorities" truly unique and haunting is the narrative structure: it is told from the perspective of Chinonso's chi, or spirit double, who watches over his every move and narrates his story to the gods. This adds a layer of mythology and spirituality to the novel, making it feel timeless and universal, yet also grounded in a specific cultural context. Overall, I highly recommend "An Orchestra of Minorities" to anyone who loves literary fiction, stories that challenge your assumptions, and characters that stay with you long after you've finished reading. It's a masterpiece of storytelling and empathy that will make you reflect on what it means to be human. #bookstagram #bookreview #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #africanliterature #nigerianliterature #fiction #readingrecommendation #bookrecommendations #bookish_pam

I have wanted to read An Orchestra of Minorities ever since I finished The Fishermen. I love(d) The Fishermen so much and it's with that high that had me anticipating this one. Reader, I may have set myself up. An Orchestra of Minorities is not hitting the way I thought it would. But, I'm hopeful. I'm only 40 pages in and it's a whole 500+ book. Maybe my sentiments will change. Happy Thursday! Read something good today. 📖 #Bookstagram #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #currentlyreading

I read 19 books during the month of February. 2 non fiction which were both ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Heal Your Way Forward and You’ll Never Believe What Happened To Lacey were both phenomenal. (I just realized I read 3 nonfiction books. I didn’t rate Gal - it was a difficult read that is said to be the true life story of a Black woman (who wanted to remain anonymous) as told to Josephine Humphreys (a white woman) and given what we know about Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I A Woman” speech, I’m not comfortable putting a rating on that). The World We Make, Even Though I Knew The End, and Ace Of Spades rounded out my ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reads this month. Son Of The Storm and The Final Strife we’re both ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I’m looking forward to their sequels. [Photo ID: 19 books on a bookshelf. Crossing off another reading challenge prompt! In January I drew 12 cards from my Bowties & Books TBR cards (created by @jesseonyoutube_ ) One of the prompts was “Fixer Upper” a BIPOC retelling of a classic. An Orchestra Of Minorities is a “contemporary twist on Homer’s Odyssey, told in the mythic style of the Igbo literary tradition.” (From the dust jacket) Ultimately, this was only 2.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed the Igbo Cosmology, especially the exploration of Chi. My interest waned about two thirds of the way through when our (originally compassionate) MC becomes obsessed with women and revenge (understandably so for the latter I suppose). Maybe that was the point 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think this book will be great for literary fiction fans who enjoy following the life story of one character. An Orchestra of Minorities is a fresh retelling of The Odyssey that follows Chinonso, a young Nigerian man, as he attempts to better himself from the perspective of his guardian spirit. Another really great read from the Booker Prize longlist in 2019 that I probably wouldn’t have picked up otherwise! I was completely swept up in Chinonso’s heartbreaking story and will definitely be reading Chigozie Obioma’s other work. #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #bookerprizelonglist2019 #bookerlonglist2019 #libraryreads

What books with a unique narrator do you know? 🤔 For me, it will be The Book Thief narrated by Death (highly recommend! ❤️) and my recently finished book, An Orchestra of Minorities, which was recounted by a chi or a guardian spirit. The story follows poultry farmer Chinonso, when he saved a woman, Ndali, from jumping into a bridge and not shortly after when they fell in love. 🌉 Alas, her family was against him as he was uneducated. He then sold his possessions to study in Cyprus, not knowing that only hardships had awaited him as he was utterly duped by the person who arranged the move. 🥲 An Orchestra of Minorities was described as Homer's Odyssey with contemporary twist and it is brimming with interesting mythos from the Igbo culture. I love that the chi is the narrator which added a lot of vibrancy to the story. ☄️ This novel explored the human psyche in suffering and oh boy was this such a tragic story. 😵 It begs the questions, how much of our pain can be accosted to other's fault and ours? Is one's life defined by loss? I thought this was an enjoyable novel though I was not devastated as I would have thought. It can also get tedious to read with it's length and pacing. The ending was a miss for me too because it didn't show a certain judgement plus I was hoping for more healing for the hero. ⭐⭐⭐✨ . . Have a lovely bookish day everyone. 👋

In July this year I travelled to Grenada on a family vacation and of course I found a local bookstore that was well-stocked. Immediately I was spying for the Caribbean and African Authors and found a decent collection. Had a mini internal debate about which ones I should buy. Edwidge Danticat was one of the authors I was determined to get this year and I was more than happy to pick up Everything Inside. I enjoyed the Mermaid of Black Conch so much, it was easy to press repeat to another Monique Roffey with The White woman on The Green Bicycle. The third book was My sister the Serial Killer - this title had always intrigued me and I was glad to see it in person. However upon getting home I realized that I had the E-version and the owner was kind enough to allow me to return it and exchange it for a new to me author, Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra of Minorities. I have a good feeling about this one, I received so many messages recommending his debut novel The Fishermen. Loved supporting an indie bookstore and reveled in the rare pleasure of seeing so many titles from Caribbean and African authors. If you are ever in Grenada, pass by the Spiceland Mall, in Grand Anse and visit Art and Soul bookstore, you won’t be disappointed. Managed to snag this sunrise view before early morning showers chased me in. 📚 #bookstack #bookhaul #indiebookstore #anorchestraofminorities #caribbeanbookstagram #readcaribbean

(...) Dołączył do wielu innych, oszukanych, ograbionych, których wymienił Tobe, do młodej Nigeryjki spotkanej opodal posterunku policji, mężczyzny na lotnisku, tych wszystkich, którzy zostali pojmani i zmuszeni do robienia czegoś, czego robić nie chcieli, dawniej albo teraz, którzy znaleźli się w czymś, do czego nie chcieli należeć, i całej reszty. Do tych, którzy byli zakuwani w kajdany i bici, których ziemie plądrowano, a kultury niszczono, uciszanych, gwałconych, upokarzanych i zabijanych. Spotkał go taki sam los. I pray the new month brings you joy and peace and comfort and great books to read . I hope the sun reaches you, always. Through every crack, in between the blinds, through every door left open. I hope you forget your troubles. That they slide off your back like water, and you find in their absence, nothing even mattered at all. I hope you sleep well, and deeply, and wake to find that the world has waited for you. That you missed nothing at all. I hope your favorite food tastes good, and that you eat them regularly... That laughter flowers over you, and often. I hope for good news, in plentitude. For 'yes', for 'congratulations', for 'I am proud of you', for 'everything is going to be okay', I hope ya'll have a month filled with happiness 💛 .

D’ailleurs le titre anglais d’origine est révélateur « AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES » Je recommande #livrestagram #LapriereDesoiseaux #chigozieobioma #ANORCHESTRAOFMINORITIES #lectureaddict #livreafricain #nigerianbooks

First “Did Not Finish” of the year. #AnOrchestraOfMinorities by Chigozie Obioma is lyrical, spiritual, well described in terms of the visual storytelling but my goodness is it dense in heaviness of storyline, sad and just so very so paced. I liked that our story is told by protagonist’s ‘Chi’, which is nice and different for me as a device. I liked all the proverbs and musings of a spirit that has long been in existence. I liked learning new words and turn of phrases. I liked glimpses into part of Nigeria. I liked the mixed languages. But I just cannot continue. It feels repetitive and long winded. 200 pages in (of 512) and I knew it was 100 pages too long. I hadn’t even connected with the other character’s except Chinonso, our lead, and felt manipulated to keep feeling sorry for him. The story is also just sad & feels hopeless at every turn and I’m not in the place / frame of mind to be saddened by people places, things of the world when I’m trying to escape. Maybe I’ll try it again next year (which is what I said of Obioma’s The Fishermen). #bookstagram #blackliterature #DNF

Where did you get your last book haul from? 📚📚 I was at the @jaipurlitfest last month and they had this eclectic collection of books at the bookshop curated by @oxfordbookstores I visited the festival for 3 days and most of my time was spent picking books and putting most of them back. I also had a lot of fun talking to people, complete strangers, about their favourite last reads and sometimes helping them pick their next read. I bought these 9 books then, but this is not my latest haul. I have also bought books recently from @_thebookshopjb and @books__etc that I'll share with you soon. Do you spot a favourite? Or a book you also have unread on your shelf? P.S. A shoutout to @studiotreasuresntrinkets too. I bought this minimal test tube vase from them. This is handmade. 🇳🇬 BOOK REVIEW // AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES 🇳🇬 5/5 ✨ is contemporary classic African fiction a genre? that’s what this is highly recommend but know this is a dense, complex read told in a very unique way it’s the tie ins of Igbo culture through storytelling, ancestral knowledge, spiritual traditions, language, religion, and proverbs. it’s taking a classic work of literature [the odyssey] and retelling it. it’s the foreshadowing. the pain, the desperate actions, the metaphors, the tragedy. and oh THE ENDING 😫😭 “All those who have been chained and beaten… who have been silenced, raped, shamed, and killed. With all these people, he’d come to share a common fate. They were the minorities of this world whose only recourse was to join this universal orchestra in which all there was to do was cry and wail.” it’s not a feel good story that’s for sure . . . #bookstagram #bookish #fiction #bookreview #AnOrchestraofMinorities #diversespines #showmestlbooks #bibliophile #chigozieobioma
