Every year, these beautiful flowers line the mountain roads where I call home. Every year, I am in awe of them. The seasons, these flowers, the turning of the earth, the pull of the tides- these are things we cannot change. We accept them with good grace, as a part of our lives, whether we are conscious of that acceptance or not. There are other things that we don't have to accept. Habits that we have allowed ourselves to form, especially those that don't align with our best self, can be changed. Sure, it can be difficult- but it is so worth it! The 100 May Miles Challenge has happened mostly in good weather. This morning is one of the few that it rained. A motto to live by in the PNW, “No rain, no gain.” Love my Saturday early morning neighborhood walking group because the ones who show up are truly the ones who live by that motto; they show up no matter what - it helps to have the right gear though.

You achieve relaxation by removing the source of discontent. Alcohol, by definition, cannot relax you. Why do we believe alcohol helps stress and anxiety? Because it can make you oblivious to your stressors even when it's worsening them. If you are truly happy and relaxed, you have no need or desire to change your state of mind. Looking back, I see that my constant need to drink to relax myself was really proof that alcohol was not relaxing me. If alcohol helped me achieve relaxation, wouldn't it follow that I wouldn't need as much of it? If alcohol cured my stress, wouldn't I need less, not more, over time? Coming back from a running injury is a process. While a little rest may be necessary at first (usually not for the most common running injuries), it should look similar to your normal strength, mobility, and warm up routine. No one likes a running injury, but statistically speaking, you will have one. Run long enough and you will have many. While strength training alone will not prevent injury, it will make you more resilient to stress and will likely help you return to running more quickly after a set back. Let me preface this post by clarifying one thing: we do NOT all have the same 24 hours in a day, and I think that phrase is out-dated and actually mildly/very offensive. But, I do firmly believe that absolutely everyone reading this can always do something for their health. And by “something”, I absolutely do not mean the conventional fitness things like going to the gym or “getting your steps in”. Yes, for some people, going to the gym or going for a walk are options which they can fit into their daily routine. But maybe right now, for you, simply spending 30 minutes less a day on your phone is a big step in the right direction. Drinking one glass of water a day is another, as it swapping from thrice-weekly takeaways to twice-weekly takeaways. Perhaps you haven’t had a fresh vegetable all week, so a simple win is chucking a bit of salad in with your sandwich. Maybe it means getting away from your desk for 15 minutes at lunchtime, rather than eating as you work. Or rather than lying in bed doom scrolling every night, leave your phone charging in another room. I see so many people constantly complaining about being exhausted 25/8, having a terrible relationship with food, having constant pain and aches, having the vigour of roadkill, and not being able to walk 20 feet without being gassed. But these are the people who are constantly fixated on all the things they CANNOT do, rather than looking at the small things they CAN do. So yes, whilst the conventional fitness tropes of going to the gym, getting your steps in, eating 100+ grams of protein a day are realistic and achievable for some people, they aren’t for everyone and that’s ok. — But 40 months of being alcohol free! In January 2021 when I embarked on my yearly Dry January I did not envisage being here 40 months later. I thought I'd take a little break, but realised one month wasn't long enough, I wanted to make a real change to my drinking habits so decided to carry on longer than the 31 days. During this month I saw @littlesoberlife who was going for 100 days and was on day 75. "75 days!!!" that seemed a lot! But it inspired me! So I did the 100 days. They flew. I decided to do a year — within six months I knew I wouldn't drink again. Why would I? See, I was noticing all the benefits — better sleep (this was key, as you age your body processes alcohol differently and I was waking for hours every night, leaving me drained in the morning). — I had more energy (better sleep + no alcohol) — I made better food choices. I wasn't grabbing high carb foods for that instant energy boost. — I lost weight. No dead calories from alcohol, quality sleep and better food choices the next day. — Clearer skin and eyes, no toxins! — I had more time — for a brilliant morning routine to set up my day and time in the evening for new hobbies. — Being present. Feeling a greater connection with friends and family. — The most difficult thing though has been living through all the emotions. Alcohol is a depressant so you can easily suppress your emotions (both positive and negative). There is now no escaping emotions, I have to live them. — But with that has come the realisation that emotions come and go. Sometimes the difficult ones hit hard, and I have to dig deep, but sure enough they pass and next time things are sometimes just that bit easier. — Now I was fortunate to have the incredible support from my friends and family. Not one of them ever said to me "Come on, don't be boring — have a drink!" My life now without drink is far from boring! — What are you celebrating? Inquire within about what is causing the anxiety, what are you afraid of, what feelings are you afraid of experiencing? Then, once you discover the root of the anxiety (i.e. - what feelings you are trying to avoid feeling), you can refocus your attention toward the feelings that you do want to experience. Shift your energy and thoughts toward what you DO want, you will be able to come into an energetic field that will be a match for the experience you seek, rather than the one that you don’t want. It’s become somewhat of a meme in the fitness industry to discuss self-discipline as the panacea for success, as though the obesity epidemic was solely due to a lack of willpower.⁣ ⁣ Don’t get me wrong: Willpower is a requirement for health and fitness. We all get tempted by impulses that have the potential to thwart our goals.⁣ ⁣ However, relying on willpower alone, without ensuring that your environment is conducive to your goals, is a recipe for failure.⁣ ⁣ We can only muster up so much self-discipline in a given day before we drain ourselves out and succumb to temptation. Anecdotally, this is a big part of why many struggle to control their eating habits on nights and weekends — they’re overly strict with their diet during the day, especially on weekdays, and inevitably let loose in the evenings and weekends after they exhaust all willpower.⁣ ⁣ Setting up your environment to support your eating and exercise habits is far easier, so you don’t HAVE to rely too much on willpower.⁣ ⁣ Some practical examples:⁣ * Deleting the Uber Eats app from your phone⁣ * Buying single-serve portions of treats such as chips or ice cream, facilitating portion control⁣ * Leaving a bowl of fruit on your counter and pre-cut veggies in the front of your fridge for easy snacking⁣ * Packing your workout clothes with you before you go to work so you’ll be more likely to hit the gym on the way back.⁣ * Preparing healthy meal components (lean proteins, healthy starches, veggies, beans, etc.) on the weekend for easy “meal assembly” when you return from work⁣ ⁣ Don’t make things harder than they need to be. Can you believe that May is around the corner? This year I've committed to having a #mindfulmay. To really hone in to my thoughts, my feelings and my emotions. 🤔 In my experience mindfulness begins with taking a pause. ✋Not just in the literal sense of making time to practice meditation and awareness. I've also found that my mindfulness increases when I take a break from outside influences that distract me from or don't align with my values. Consistency & Realistic Goals ✔️ Emily has been a dream to work with, she’s chipped at her goal each week and enjoyed the process along the way 👏🏼 Not only has Emily struck a balance with her goals and social life, she’s enjoyed 3 holiday abroad during her journey while still seeing results and nailing her targets 😍 🔸 16lb down 🔸 10 cm off waist 🔸 10 cm off hips “ I feel like I’m slow and steady and enjoying/sticking to it! Where as before now I would go in hard for a couple of weeks and then be back to square one!!” Extreme and restrictive diets/changes will be very hard to maintain, finding a balance that works for the client while managing social occasions and including the food they love will work more effectively. I know this to be forever true, for myself and my family. If I do not want something in my tummy, or theirs, then it does not end up in my cart, pantry or fridge! Many try to say their partners are picky, kids will only eat —, etc. but I can tell you from experience that people will eat what is made easily available or accessible. Many are too busy to deal with “fuss” so we must make healthy options convenient so they are the go-to option for nourishment.

Part 1: Weight loss reminder to help make it suck less... Make sure to track data! Weight loss is simple science if working WITH your body and yet it's very hard. Why? Mentally it's hard. It's easy to get in our heads. It's not working, it's taking too long, OMG only 0.5 a pound! Yeah, you know what I'm talking about lol It's going to happen because it happens to all of us. If you have nothing to look back on to see what's working, what you have been doing etc. well...you'll quit. -Are you following through with what you said today? Mark an x on your tracker -Weight, measurements, photos are very helpful -Are you tracking your food in some way? If not, then you truly don't know what you're doing. You may think you do but I guarantee it won't be accurate. I've seen this with past clients. -Are you truly active or do you just think you are? 5,000 daily steps in still sedentary my friend. -Behavior changes....are you noticing that? -Habit swaps? You will not always see the scale move down but you will always see some progress somewhere. Your habits, behaviors and actions matter more than that scale anyway. That's what actually gets you the result and keep it. So do yourself a favor and track data and not just the scale! Did you know? 👌🏻Every lb you lose takes off 4 lbs of pressure off your knees. The difference between these photos is that in the top I was weighing 201 lbs. I had just gotten the RAD wagon e-bike for Mother’s Day that 2018 year. I used the assist pretty much the whole time riding with the kids. I was tired, my legs throbbed, my back hurt , overall my body was extremely sore after that ride. It took me 4 days to recover from it. The bottom was taken today. No longer carrying 62 lbs of extra weight on my body & 1 less kid riding with me on the bike. I ride longer and challenge myself to bike more without my assist. Every time we get on our bikes, I feel so grateful that I took the chance on my health 5 years ago. I have less joint pain and less worrying of injury. So... Let me encourage you,⠀ To TAKE BACK your health. ⁠⠀ It can start TODAY. ⁠⠀ You don’t have to wait for a new week, new month or new situation. ⁠⠀ YOU have the power to make yourself a priority. Today I wish to spread a message of hope and optimism for an issue that has either directly or indirectly affected many of us and our families - the increased proliferation of neurodegenerative diseases. Those of you who know me know that this is an issue that I hold close to my heart. Simply put, a diagnosis of dementia no longer represents a death sentence. I recently attended in the online Alzheimer's 4.0 Summit from the US hosted by Dr Sandison and Dr Bredesen and it offered me a great insight into the ground-breaking and forward-thinking work of highly considered professionals in the area of cognitive degeneration (Alzheimer's, Frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, etc). I was overwhelmed by the positivity attributed to science-backed results of treatments that are now available that can enable a patient to live the rest of their lives with dignity and independence - which till recently was considered impossible post diagnosis. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with any type of neurodegenerative disease, I strongly urge you to look for professionals that think outside the box, that are in tune with the latest available treatments and who can demonstrate a new approach to living that will bring the hope and confidence needed to continue a happy, meaningful and fulfilling life. You or your loved one need and deserve the approach of 21st century medical professionals who are aware of the latest ground breaking research taking place in this area. Belief. This is the first determining factor on whether you will reach a goal. Do you scroll through your social media and see someone with strong arms that you would die for? They believed that they could accomplish it. You see someone being a stay at home mom running a successful business from her phone and you get a little jealous. She believed she could do it. Do you see a new mom lose the baby weight from simply following our program? She believed she could do it. You see another coach pay off all of their credit card debt from their business that they do in the pockets of time they have during their day. They believed they could do it. You see other people punching their insecurities in the face and doing the work required to find success. They believed they could do it. When are you going to stop listening to the lies that you tell yourself about not being enough, not having enough time, not knowing enough, or not being brave enough. When? When it’s too late? Simple. Sometimes boring. Basic steps. Choosing it daily, over & over again. That is what I coach and it what has worked for me these last 5 years to keep 62 lbs of weight coming back on. What I coach is all about starting small. As a health coach I am more interested in your consistent daily habits that contribute to your overall health and well-being than JUST your nutrition or exercise. Transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but I know the science behind it and coach accordingly. And honestly, the results you want will take longer than you think! So you might as well start small, so they turn into habits and last.

Opting for simplicity is the key to effective weight loss. While flashy trends like HIIT workouts, extreme diets, ice baths, and fasting may seem enticing and marketable, they typically don't yield sustainable results for the majority.Most of us need to be way more boring. We need to walk more to burn calories and improve overall health. Walking can also help us manage stress, which means less stress-eating. Eating more protein will help us manage hunger and build muscle So will getting more sleep. These 4 boring-ass habits are key for being able to get into a calorie deficit and then STAY THERE for long enough to get results. Do not hold on to any labels or beliefs that don’t serve you well. So drop the “alcoholic”, drop the “addict”, un-pickle that cucumber and focus on making the improvements you need to be the person you want to be. Don’t let others hold you back because of their beliefs. You are the one living your life and you know your capabilities. In order to change, you must first replace the existing beliefs and experiences that led you to the path you are currently on. You must make what you currently believe to be true – untrue. Non-traditional. Rogue. Radical. However you choose to change should be as unique as you are. Personalize it to fit your needs. You know yourself best, so you will know what works for you and what doesn’t. If you have social anxiety and the idea of sitting in a room with a bunch of people makes you cringe, then live meetings might not be your best choice. That’s okay. One-on-one support, online groups, or even a book may suit you better. Maybe you know you’re going to need something extra to help you get unstuck and start your new life. At the end of each day I review my wins and also the things I could have done differently. I look at my wins for the day, celebrate them and acknowledge myself, knowing I am on my path and I am doing my best with what I have. I also look at the things that didn't go as well as I had hoped, the thoughts I had that aren't in alignment with the life I want and also the actions I didn't take. I don't berate myself, get annoyed or angry at myself but I DO bring my awareness to the things I can change. Tomorrow is another new day, a new beginning and a chance to start over. I set the intention of how I would like my next day to go, what my new thoughts will be and use repetition to make these new changes, day by day. With persistent action these new changes will become habits, done without even thinking about it. Habits that I want and that support me to live the life I love, not habits that I have outgrown and no longer serve me. If I can do this so can you!!! Start with one manageable habit and build from there. 2️⃣ Set realistic goals: Break your habit change into small, achievable steps that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. 3️⃣ Use reminders and cues: Set up reminders or visual cues to help prompt you to practice your new habit consistently. 4️⃣ Celebrate progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. How do you start your day? I am such a believer in a morning routine. Even on the weekends. It has become my anchor for my whole day. I have found that if I don’t chase my day then my day will chase me. 🤪 My morning routine consists of: -non-negotiable 4:30am wake-up (started with 5am; remember, small): Monday-Sunday ⬅️ Don’t let your weekend become your weak end. -taking care of me first in the mornings -hydrating with 32 oz of water before eating or having my coffee -fueling my body with solid nutrition (a good protein filled breakfast with balanced carbs and healthy fat) within 30 minutes of waking -prayer & devotions -getting dressed and ready for the day while listening to a podcast, sermon, or audio book -getting kids on the bus for school -making the bed -praying with Mike -if I am doing a morning workout I do it after kids are off to school and still fit in prayer time with Mike before heading to the studio -taking an hour walk (used to be 45 minute walks) outside by myself or with Mike I didn’t start with this routine. I started with committing to get up at 5 am to pray by myself and with Mike and it led to 4:30am wake-ups. I couldn’t do it all but I refused to make that an excuse to do nothing. It isn’t perfect. But it’s become my habits. What would you add to the list?
