Part two of the books I got for my birthday (which is today btw). I wanted to go down to Powell's City of Books, which is a massive bookstore (new and used) in Portland, Oregon. I've never been there, and so my parents and I went on a mini road trip from where we are in Washington down to Portland ^-^ I wound up getting 9 books there😅 I got: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, The Trees Grew Because I Bled There by Eric LaRocca (which is one of my favorite books by Eric LaRocca), Misery, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary by Stephen King, and Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar (which are two of my favorite Shakespeare plays) ^-^ They were a bit pricier than AbeBooks, but I think some of these books were new and even used they were in better shape than some of the ones I got in the mail lol We're headed back home now, and once we are back, these books are going to be sorted and set in the appropriate cubby on my tbr shelf ^-^ #bookhaul #birthdaybookhaul🎂📚 #powellcityofbooks #bookstagram

Rouge by Mona Awad 5/5 ✨ Pheeeeeew! The hold this book has on me right now… I loved Bunny so much and my expectations for this were very, very high and Mona absolutely delivered. The story is nearly impossible for me to summarize, and I feel like any attempt I make will just be doing a disservice to the novel. Instead, here is some of what you will find in Rouge: the beauty industry, beauty standards, mother/daughter relationships, fairy tales, grief, cults, and Tom Cruise. I was in attendance when Mona visited Powell’s Books last week and she called Rouge “a dark celebration of beauty’s power.” She also verbalized something I often feel when reading certain books but have never really acknowledged, and that is the experience of “feeling anxiety for a character who feels no anxiety at all”, a sentiment and feeling which absolutely applies here. What struck me most about this novel, was how vividly I was able to imagine the setting and picture it in my mind. It felt very cinematic. I imagine it had a lot to do with the constant repetition and mention of colors – specifically red. I was reminded of Suspiria (1977), and especially of a film that A24 put out a few years ago called In Fabric (2018). I wanted to ask her about this during the Q&A but chickened out, so when it was my turn to have my books signed I asked her. She told me that In Fabric was her favorite movie(!) and that I had correctly deduced that one of the characters in the novel was based on one of the central characters in the film. It was a real Big Brain™ moment for me.

@powellsbooks had a fantastic sale yesterday that I was tempted to hop on a plane with an empty suitcase. But alas, I am home reminiscing about earlier this month when I did visit and bought copies of my favorite books from my go to authors! MY DARKEST PRAYER: all stories by SA Cosby are like reading a high action suspense summer blockbuster. This one kept my attention from the get go with fast paced fight scenes and small town scandal. THE NIGHT SHIFT: I love how Alex Finlay finds a refreshing and unique way to deliver a suspense thriller in a sometimes saturated genre. I enjoyed the Y2K timeline throwback! As someone who has been to many, many bookstores around the world- I was really pleasantly surprised to see the “Bookstores of Oregon”. While the Strand in NYC likes to talk miles of books, they have nothing on these two In Oregon! Of course with the world famous Powell’s in Portland which I had to make a pilgrimage to, but also the ginormous Smith Family Bookstore of Eugene right next to the train station. With both - I could barely see the other side of the building in these cavernous no nonsense spaces. 1-6 Powells (including grunge tarot and “The Golden Bough” which could or could not be a reference in FJM’s “Holy Shit”) 7- Sasquatch? Breakfast on the balcony this morning while checking out my finds at @powellsbooks . No trip home is complete without a Powell’s visit. My fav was the yellow mug that just felt so cheery I had to get it. More yellow and orange mugs in my life please 😂. Pretty stocked on my finds: Backpacker’s Field Manual- I luckily have so much info at my fingertips online but sometimes it’s nice to be able to dive into a book to learn more about a hobby. I also find it helps with remembering what I learned as opposed to online searching. American Born Chinese- love graphic novels and this one has been on my list for awhile. Heart Berries- this one has been on the list for awhile. I am also trying to read more indigenous voices because Ive found it to be a gap in my reading perspectives. Plus PNW author! My Struggle Pt 1- I feel like I saw a recommendation from @jmai19 for Karl Ove Knausgaard and she has not led me astray this far. hi everyone! apologies for the long-awaited post! i finished school a few weeks ago (graduating next year!!) and went on a family vacation to the pacific northwest region (seattle, wa & portland, oregon), and i can confidently say that it’s probably my favorite region in the US. the weather and landscape is drastically different to the sweltering heat of texas so even the gloomiest rainy days were so refreshing in comparison. i used to live in oregon, so it was great seeing the abundance of massive pine and cedar trees everywhere again. 📍left bank books collective, seattle i stumbled upon a small bookstore in pike place market. it specializes in anarchist, anti-authoritarian, independent, and radical literature and attached on the bookshelves were some really thoughtful and critical reviews of the books. it also had a little nook upstairs right by a window so you could look out into the bustling cobblestone streets of the market while reading, and i definitely would have spent hours in there. 📍powell’s city of books, portland this was definitely my most anticipated stop in our trip (aside from muji) and i’m sure any bookworm can understand. the collection of books and the height of each book shelf was like a living in a dream. powell’s has approximately 1 MILLION books in its store, making it the largest independent bookstore in the US. a downside for me was that it was a little too expensive for my budget. i bought Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong for $16 and it was lot pricier considering it’s size, but they also sell used books for much cheaper. i just didn’t have enough room in my luggage to afford buying more than one 😭 i am definitely coming back soon. peep the current read in the last photo taken in powell’s :) 🏷: #bookstore #bookish #bookworm #bookstagram #booktok #booktography #bookshop #bookshopping #readingnook #leftbankbooks #leftbankbooksseattle #powellsbooks #powellcityofbooks #seattle #pikeplacemarket #portland #pnw #pacificnorthwest

Where I get my books from 1. Audible: I started reading for fun in 2018. At the time I was only listening to Audio books on Audible. There are many plans to choose from. I am currently on Silver which gives me one credit every other month for $10.00. A great alternative to using Audible is Libro.fm. 2. Libby App (My Local Library): In 2020 I discovered Libby on my phone. I used this only for audiobooks at the time because it was too hard for me to read on my phone. The new books always have a very long wait list which is why I kept audible for the books I wanted to listen to ASAP. 3. Book of the Month: I started in 2021 because of the early releases! I enjoy getting the box in the mail with a funny bookmark each month. I pay $15.99 every month for a credit and have the option to add on up to two books for $10.99. It is a great deal!!! Each book is a hard cover and the same size so they look great on a shelf. 4. Kindle Paper White: I bought this in 2022 and I have no idea why it took so long. I purchased the Kindle Paper White Signature edition for $189.99. The main reason I picked this one was it had auto adjusting light. I love that this kindle is glare free, water proof, has a long battery life, light weight and small. I currently have 3 months free with Kindle Unlimited but will not be continuing after my trail. I get the books I read on my kindle from Libby. 5. Buying Books: The other books I buy are from Target, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and local book stores. I usually only buy books from Amazon or Barnes & Nobles when they have their sales such as buy two get one free. I love Targets selection of books and their prices. Also, I am lucky enough to live less than a mile away from Powell’s City of Books so I love to shop there as well. Siguiendo con otro de los grandes iconos de la ciudad de Portland, vengo a contaros un poquito sobre la librería Powell, apodada como “La Ciudad de los Libros” 📚 Fundada por Walter Powell en 1971, supongo que este no podría imaginarse que se convertiría en la tienda de libros (nuevos y usados) independiente mas grande del mundo, y una de las mejores 10 librerías de EEUU 🇺🇸 Hace 6 años que fuimos a la Powell por primera vez, y desde entonces he perdido la cuenta de las veces que nos hemos perdido en sus salas y pasillos, cada visita es diferente y única. Mi recomendación es que nada mas llegar a la tienda te pilles un mapa (en la sala verde) y te tomes un cafe, situate bien y luego deja las manos libres para perderte entre sus diferentes salas. Y es que un mapa y buena señalización es necesaria en esta tienda que tiene 9 salas, divididas por colores, que a la vez se dividen en diferentes secciones y géneros. Y no creo que haya libro que se le resista a la Powell, porque si no está entre sus pasillos sus amables dependientes te lo buscan en su catalogo online y te solucionan el problema. When in Portland! I had to make a stop at one of my favorite places today and couldn’t help myself from capturing these bookshelves. I picked up FLORIDA, a collection of short stories by Lauren Groff. I just finished her most recent book, MATRIX, and had mixed feelings. I do love short stories and the writing style seemed more palatable in this book (plus it was on sale!). I’m currently reading ‘It Ends With Us’ by Colleen Hoover. Here’s my early take: 👍 I’m impressed that she keeps the storyline moving smoothly, even though I’m pretty sure 75% of this book is fantasizing about making out or making out. 👎 One of the main character’s names is Ryle. RYLE?! How am I supposed to root for a character named RYLE???? 🤮😂
