They will benefit so much from her books. Back to this review, it took me some time to finish this book, as it is 500+ pages, but I got so invested in Poppy and Noah. Ruth is such a terrible and annoying friend. The way she treats Poppy is awful. But somehow they were friends. 😅 I liked the incognito POV. Something is happening, but we're not exactly sure, but it's connected to Poppy and Noah. I didn't expect the ending to be so emotional, I literally put off reading the end as I felt it in my soul 🥹 Cue sad song playlist.... Please note that older readers might not enjoy this as much as the audience is YA. But that doesn't mean the story won't pull at your heartstrings. Four Eids and a Funeral review Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My thoughts: Thank you so much to Usborne for sending me this ARC for an honest review and also to NetGalley for the eARC because I clearly needed this book in 2 formats! 😂 This book is a YA muslim romcom co-written by Faridah Abike-Iyimide and Adiba Jaigirdar; Faridah writes Tiwa’s chapters and Adiba writes Said’s chapters. I was worried that I wasn’t going to understand a lot of this book with me not knowing a lot about the muslim religion but you really didn’t need to know to be able to enjoy this book. It was such a sweet story. The romance element was adorable and it ended up being a friends-enemies-lovers relationship. It was also a comedy so there were parts in this that made me laugh but more made me laugh because you got to know the characters so well so you were laughing because of their personality or mishaps. There was baking/sweet treats as well as a cat in this book which I love, it really brought the whole story together. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you have enjoyed the likes of Jenny Han, Axie Oh or Beth Reekles. I read it really quickly, I couldn’t put it down, it was just a happy, cosy hug of a book. I was obsessed with Royal Blood as soon as I picked it up so I was really excited to pick up Royal Scandal, the second in the series, as soon as I could and it did not disappoint. The first thing I have to say is the ending!!! OMG it was one hell of a cliff-hanger. This book is also a lot darker than the first, there is more danger in the scandals such as shootings, protests and mass danger. There was so much drama and chaos in this book; it was such a roller-coaster. I was really rooting for Evan all the way through this; I love how the author makes you love Evan even when she is mixed up with all the scandals. The only thing I hate about this book is that I have to wait for the next one. The last book in "The Gilded Ones" trilogy is finally here! But. I am so disappointed. If you look at the second picture, you see the previous books had sprayed edges. The new one doesn't. I was in touch with Bokus, where I bought it from. They didn't know but tried to help me out. After I googled, I found out the puplisher is at fault. Apparently, Usborne YA UK decided against sprayed edges on the last book. THE LAST BOOK! Why in the world would anyone do such a stupid thing?! Doesn't everyone want their books to match? It was a bit of a slow burn and it’s a chunky book but I actually liked that The last 100 pages had me hooked and I needed to finish the book to find out what was happening, it was just full of twists and turns The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was Sade mentioned she’s a Muslim but other than eating Halal food there was no other indication that she was Muslim… It felt a bit random to add it in and wasn’t much representation However I would highly recommend this book! Book: “The Merciless Ones” by Namina Forna Series: The Gilded Ones book 2 Format: paperback Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: I was so excited to get a hold of the sequel to “The Gilded Ones” and I was luckily enough to get a signed bookplate edition so I was hoping it was going to live up to my expectations based on the first novel and not suffer from the “second book syndrome” flop. I am relieved to say it did and Namina Forna has done another fantastic job. I think it took a bit longer to get going than the first book so I was concerned to begin with and there was a lot more packed into explaining the world and the world was massively expanded from the first book which at times was a bit overwhelming but all in all I would say for me it worked, and once I was invested I couldn’t wait to pick it back up and get into Deka’s world again. It follows on relatively quickly from the events of the first book and we have the same sisterhood relationships going on but they are a bit more strained. The romance is less in this one which was slightly disappointing but there is so much else going on so it was understandable and I was actually ok with this. Boy oh boy, are there some plot twists! There were so many bombshells that I was not expecting and I was left with whiplash at the end and needed to give myself a bit of a break before I start book three. I read this book in 2022 and it’s one of my all time favourite reads. It goes deep into more than just academia and deals with a lot of important topics. secrets haunt these hallowed halls.. 🏫 🔍 ❓ where sleeping girls lie by @faridahlikestea review! 4.5 stars 🌟 It’s been days since I read this one, and my head is still spinning. I haven’t had a chance to read ‘Ace of Spades’ by this author yet, so this book was my first introduction to Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, and what an introduction it was! This was one of the most binge-worthy mysteries that I’ve read in a long time, my heart was in my throat in those last hundred pages. ‘Where Sleeping Girls Lie’ was dark, intriguing and heavy, and the story was so well told I felt as though I was attending the school myself, I could almost picture the halls in my head if I closed my eyes. As much as I’d love to talk about this plot for days, and all the thoughts and feelings that crossed my mind as I was reading this book, I don’t want to say anything that could even possibly spoil this book for you all, because I hope that everyone who reads this one experiences the rollercoaster that I did. The story almost played out like a movie, I could picture the ‘cast’ vividly as I read, and although there was a lot to keep track of, I didn’t once get lost. Each one of the characters was so different, and the description of both the characters and the school was fantastic, it was so easy to visualise every scene as it played out. The storytelling of this book was incredible! As I mentioned earlier, there are some heavy and emotional topics in this book, so as always read the content warnings before picking this one up! And god, I felt so much anger for the girls in this story. But, this being said, there were some hilarious and lighthearted comedic moments to balance this out perfectly. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA mystery/thrillers and dark academia. Royal Blood follows Evan (Evangeline), who has been expelled from a number of boarding schools, to which she’d sent by her father (who happens to be King of the United Kingdom). When she accidentally sets her school on fire (lol) she’s brought to Windsor for the first time and chaos ensues. There’s murd3r, mystery, and scandal after scandal. I love love loved the idea for this book - the illegitimate daughter of the King, can you get any more iconic? Evan was the coolest protagonist, and I really enjoyed reading from her POV. The development of each of her relationships (especially with her half-sister, Maisie) was done so well alongside strong character development. Kitt is a little precious baby and I love him forever❤️ The sequel, Royal Scandal, is coming out on 26 March 2024!!!!!! I really recommend this series for those who enjoy The Princess Diaries and similar! Having read and loved This Book Kills, I was intrigued to find out if Ravena Guron could write a further book with has much mystery and suspense has her debut novel. Oh my, she sure can! The scene is set - a stately home cut off from its surroundings in the midst of heavy snow storms. A wealthy family that really don’t get on with each other, a housekeeper and her assistant and two young girls whom end up stranded due to the weather, staying at the house over night. No phone signals, power cuts and the death of the wealthy Emily Vanforte, hidden passages, mysterious findings, guns. But, is it all has it seems! For fear of giving the game away, I couldn’t say more. Apart from, this book has more twists, turns and discoveries, than an average murder mystery. Written in such away that we see the story unfold for the main characters over 91 short chapters/extracts, captivating its reader and, arousing suspicions, whilst encouraging the reader to interact and solve the mystery with each page turn. Ravena is certainly writing a name for herself has a great author of Young Adult Fiction stories, but also has a Who-Dunn-it writer for a younger generation. AD/PR Thank you to Jessica from Usborne Books for the opportunity to review Catch Your Death by Ravena Guron I think this is my first proper murder/mystery novel and I really enjoyed it. Reading the different perspectives and then transcripts from the police interviews was interesting. I had a couple of ideas in my head of who the murderer might be and one of those turned out to be correct. What I didn’t expect was the first plot twist and how it played out. Then when more plot twists and developments came into play I was like 😳 ok, I see you Miss Guron. This book definitely kept me on my toes. It was creepy at times too, which I also loved. The main 3 characters were all likeable and I enjoyed reading how they all developed together. I have a soft spot for the found family trope (which I don’t know if this is that). I enjoyed the mystery side, hunting for clues and putting your own theories together. So would definitely recommend this book if it’s your first foray into murder/mystery. Also one last thing, the setting for this book is perfect as it’s set in snowy England, perfect for cosy winter blanket and hot chocolate weather. Catch Your Death is out December 7th and is available to preorder
