⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5 I really enjoyed this book and especially the FML Sade. Before I started I saw a few reviews that said it was a bit slow in the beginning and I do have to agree which is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. However the characters are so interesting and layered that it keeps you invested in the story and it really pays off in part 2 and 3 of the book. When the mystery starts to really unravel and the puzzle pieces start to fit together it becomes almost impossible to put down because you need to know what happens next. This is a dark story the touches on a wide range of topics some very heavy such as mental illness, grief, racism, privilege, abuse and some others so just be forewarned and make sure to check the trigger warnings when going into it. There is a bit of romance and relationship development and while it's not the focus of the book I did love the chemistry between Sade and Penelope. All in all this was a great read and my first time reading this author. I can't wait to go check out her other book Ace of Spades now! She definitely has a new fan!

Where Sleeping Girls Lie by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. Bookclub book for May. Honestly, when this was handed out I sighed a little, the first page is a mountain of trigger warnings and I instantly worried it was going to be too ‘heavy’. I was wrong! I really enjoyed this book. Yes there were ‘heavy topics’ involved however I think they were very well written into the story. Sade Hussein joins as a third year pupil to the elite Alfred Nobel Academy. Her roommate Elizabeth mysteriously goes missing on Sade’s first night and suspicion was surely cast. Where is Elizabeth? Who are The Fisherman and why do dead rats keep appearing at her door?! Oh and don’t forget the morse code! Sade has lived through various trauma’s, bereavement and grief and I liked the way this book portrayed the longer lasting side effects of these things. Overall I really enjoyed this book, yes it was emotional and brutal in parts but that’s life! Thank you to Usborne for sending me an arc copy for review! #adpr This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, I have loved every book by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé and Adiba Jaigirdar, Four Eids and a Funeral included! I loved that this really was a friends to enemies to lovers book, and it was very emotional throughout. Tiwa and Said had to work together to save the local Islamic Centre after a fire. The Mayor was an asshole and everyone makes such valid points as to why it is necessary to the Muslim community. Throughout the book there is a lead up to Eid, and everyone seems worried about what will happen, as the Islamic Centre is closed - safety wise. They come together as a community to try and save the centre from being demolished, but also to celebrate Eid together no matter what, which I thought was beautiful. I loved Laddoo the cat! I really wish he had more page time though. Said and Tiwa end up sharing the cats custody after their favourite librarian dies and leaves the cat to them in her will, therefore forcing the together again. Said’s artistic skills were really up for the challenge and I really wish there was some artwork available to see the mural he painted and it really seems beautiful and although I can imagine it, I think seeing an actual artwork of it would make it wven more amazing. Tiwa and Said really did not like eachother and the reason why getd revealed much later in the book than I would have liked, but it did make sense. I am glad they found their way back to eachother because I really feel like these characters belong together! I am also glad that these characters were chasing their dreams throughout this emotional book, there are friendships remade and found, a community coming together, wants and dreams, heartbreaks and celebrations - I definitely recommend everyone picks this book up. Overall, I really enjoyed Four Eids and a Funeral and I am giving it 4 stars! Really excited to see what comes next from both authors! This is a great book to play detective to with all of the secrets and clues being dropped 📱 This one does handle dark topics and is on the lengthier side, so read with care, but man, this book has me itching for more fall-focused academic reads!! Reasons you NEED to read ‘Where Sleeping Girls Lie’: Found family: As one of my all-time favourite tropes, it deserves to go to the top of the list, but also because it is just so well done. When introduced to the student body of the Alfred Nobel Academy, we’re given the nostalgic teen cliques (hello ‘Unholy Trinity’) but Àbíké-Íyímídé breaks these down throughout the book until every messy character is laid bare. Apart from exploring the impact of grief, trauma, privilege and more, that’s harder to pinpoint, it also breaks down walls between characters and rekindles old ties. The perfect recipe for found family! The pace: If it wasn’t for life and work getting in the way I would have read ‘Where Sleeping Girls Lie’ in one sitting (despite the 500-odd page count). You can’t help yourself, from the start Àbíké-Íyímídé makes you NEED to know what's going on. Having read the blurb you know Elizabeth is going to disappear at some point, so from the moment you and Sade (our MMC) meet her at the start of the book, but you spend that whole time trying to make note of every little detail that might be a clue. Then she’s gone and there are so many threads to follow, so many different agendas, not even counting Sade’s own history and you just NEED TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS. Jammy Dodgers and Gerbils: ‘Where Sleeping Girls Lie’ is funny. It has heart and comedic relief squeezed into a serious story that will let so many people feel seen. I promise it’s worth the read. It’s not quite the same heart-pounding thriller as Ace of Spades, but it’s just as compelling and will keep you guessing until the very end. Between cryptic notes, hallucinations of bodies, and a handful of clues that don’t quite add up– until of course, they do– this book has so many of my favorite parts of a mystery. But it goes deeper than that. In the span of 400 pages, I got to know Sade and the other characters in this book well enough to be their friends. I was fully invested in every single one and all of their emotions. As they got closer & closer to the truth, I too was equal parts heartbroken and hopeful. I mourned and gasped and screamed with them every time a new plot twist was revealed. Another Scavenger Hunt that I saw @thisbeereads do awhile back 😁 - A spine with a heart on it: My Love Mix Up - I love this manga, it's so silly and sweet! And it's just 9 volumes so not too long. - A spine with a flower on it: The Hacienda - Really liked the creepy atmosphere though I didn't think it needed the romance (thankfully it wasn't too focused on though). - A spine with an animal on it: Where Sleeping Girls Lie - A bird counts right? I haven't read this yet but the school setting intrigued me and I've heard great things about the author's other book. - A spine with foil on it: Monsters You Should Know - A collection of creatures from folklore around the world and great artwork, what more could you ask for? - A spine with a plant on it: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau - This is a slow burn plot but with this kind of story really like that. April wrap up! Last month was mostly a race to the finish line of my third year of college and slogging through several final essays and exams, so I didn’t have a lot of time for much else outside of work and school (although celebrating indie bookstore day was a bright spot amidst the stress). But we made it through with the help of eight whole books! Stand outs were definitely Where Sleeping Girls Lie and The Prospects (my most beloved), but I more or less enjoyed everything I read last month. I squeezed in a handful of poetry books for national poetry month and am working my way through Devotions by Mary Oliver. I thought I might be able to finish it last month, but I’m savoring (and annotating) every page as it deserves, each one better than the last. Since finishing up my semester, I feel, as I often do once summer hits, like a person again for the first time in months. I can finally devote time to my hobbies and interests again, sleep in without fear of missing class, spend time with friends without the stress of an upcoming paper looming over me, and just exist without the weight of the world on my shoulders. I’m very grateful to be working on a degree, and I throughly enjoy most of the classes I take and am fascinated by the things I learn in them. But god is it taxing. Summer is a very welcome reprieve every year as each semester seems to get harder than the last. I won’t be taking this one for granted though. I’ve already crammed so much life into the few short weeks since the semester ended. I’ve taken myself on reading picnics at the park, visited several more local indies, gone hiking, and spent time indulging in crafting and creating art that I’ve sorely missed. Plus I have so many more amazing things to look forward to the rest of the summer. I can’t wait to soak it all in. Hope May’s been treating you well so far! See y’all in the next one 🫶🏻

This is what I want from dark academia books from now on. (Said like I’ve read any before this one but that’s how you know the bar is HIGH.) This was atmospheric and creepy and culty and mysterious and just so good. And the tWIST?! I didn’t see it coming. I did nooooooot see that coming. (See above screaming at desk.) Despite its prestigious reputation and its beautiful buildings named after only the most significant figures in history, all is not what it seems. The story centres around Sade Hussein, previously homeschooled and joining the school in her third year, who appears to be running from a dark past. When her newly assigned roommate and house sister, Elizabeth, disappears, secrets of the academy begin to unravel while Sade is forced to face her own dark truths. I had originally given this 4.5 stars but changed my mind after the way I couldn’t stop thinking about this book for days once I’d finished it. The settings are so well-written, I could picture ANA so vividly and it really added to the dark and ominous atmosphere. All the storylines weave together, and despite being relatively lengthy for YA at almost 600 pages, it was well-paced and had the perfect amount of character development. Where Sleeping Girls Lie by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé • When I heard this book was coming out, I immediately put it on hold at the library. I LOVED Ace of Spades so I knew I’d love this one. Apart from being a great read, the main character, Sade, shares her experience with grief, something I strongly relate to these days. There were so many great quotes that I wanted to share but here are my top ones that not only I relate to, but also what I believe others should know, especially if they know someone who is grieving: • “But the thing about grief was that even one hundred good days were sometimes weighed down by an overwhelming guilt of forgetting. Sometimes she’d win a swim meet and for a moment forget why she was ever sad at all, and the guilt of not constantly being consumed by the weight of the loss she had experienced would be paralyzing. Other times, she’d feel the crushing weight of the past trying to drown her still.” • “Sade wasn’t sure she knew what normal was anymore. Her normal looked very different depending on the day. Sometimes her normal involved constant panic attacks throughout the day.
