🗡 THE MERCILESS ONES 🗡 by Namina Forna Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow, it took me a while to finally finish this book 🥲 Firstly, it's been such a long time since I read the first book in this trilogy, so I had to familiarise myself with the characters again. I felt like I couldn't really enjoy this book because everything just felt so foreign to me and I felt very disconnected from this book. Also, I don't know about you all but the overuse of the phrase "it was all I could do not to" really sucked. My eyerolls got a good workout each time I read this phrase, so I could go without it for the next century. I only really started to feel interested about 70% in, the character development and the plot got better. And I'm glad I can get started on the third installment of this series while it's still fresh on my mind.

Tot ce ține de această parte a fost complexă și mi-a plăcut mult. Povestea este foarte încărcată și cu multă acțiune, dar mie mi-a plăcut, eram prea prinsă în poveste și voiam să aflu ce ascund Zeițele. Book: “The Merciless Ones” by Namina Forna Series: The Gilded Ones book 2 Format: paperback Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: I was so excited to get a hold of the sequel to “The Gilded Ones” and I was luckily enough to get a signed bookplate edition so I was hoping it was going to live up to my expectations based on the first novel and not suffer from the “second book syndrome” flop. I am relieved to say it did and Namina Forna has done another fantastic job. I think it took a bit longer to get going than the first book so I was concerned to begin with and there was a lot more packed into explaining the world and the world was massively expanded from the first book which at times was a bit overwhelming but all in all I would say for me it worked, and once I was invested I couldn’t wait to pick it back up and get into Deka’s world again. It follows on relatively quickly from the events of the first book and we have the same sisterhood relationships going on but they are a bit more strained. The romance is less in this one which was slightly disappointing but there is so much else going on so it was understandable and I was actually ok with this. Boy oh boy, are there some plot twists! There were so many bombshells that I was not expecting and I was left with whiplash at the end and needed to give myself a bit of a break before I start book three. Book 42 of 2024! #bookstagram #2024readingchallenge #naminafornabooks This is a reread for me because I couldn’t remember what happened past vague details. I really enjoy the way the story keeps being a bit surprising. It’s a deeply patriarchal society but Deka’s dad is different. Until he’s not. Deka is all alone and friendless. Until she’s not and she’s actually special. All the girls with Deka are in the same position. But actually they’re the elite. Lots of trigger warning sections and the start of some really good character development. I’m a little torn about whether the world building is good as there’s very little information given past a certain point. As it’s kind of given up in favour of showing that Deka is a super warrior but the men around her still expect her to be subservient to them. So some bits are on ‘could do with improvement’ and other bits are super good.

And oh, Deka, the main character, has almost the same Parseltongue skill that Harry Potter had, except there is no Snakes in this book. The message and representation? A+! Being Asian with dark skin tone, I felt heard! But let's talk story and characters – Deka, Britta, Belcalis, White Hands – a big cast, but each one's fleshed out so beautifully. Fyi, Britta's my ride-or-die, such a loyal and funny friend. The romance subplot, though? Not my cup of tea. I didn't feel Keita that much, but it's okay. I love the sisterhood more! World-building? Plot Twists? A+ I couldn't tell much about this, so please READ THE BOOK! Lols! I say I'm a new fan of Namina Forna! And I soooo love her writing voice! 😍✨

Ce poveste 😱🤯 ✨ M-a atras de la început ideea de sânge auriu și fetele care sunt impure, dar nu m-am așteptat la o așa poveste complexă 😳 cu siguranță un fantasy care m-a uimit prin toate ideile descoperite, nu știu dacă am ghicit ceva, am bănuit că unele lucruri nu sunt chiar așa cum par, dar era imposibil să îmi dau seama de toată povestea 😳 a fost uimitoare 🤯 💛 Avem zei, avem aleki ( fete impure antrenate să omoare Urlătorii-morții), uruni (partenerii în luptă ai fetelor aleki), multe multe creaturi ciudate, soldații jatu, umbrele împăratului… multe elemente care m-au fascinat. ✨ Mi-a plăcut mult și cum a fost scoasă în evidență ideea de credință oarbă în ceva și supunere... Ce a fost cel mai greu de suportat a fost să văd cât de multe fete/femei suferă și în ce mod sunt tratate... Nu aveau voie să facă nimic, nu exista să aibă o meserie, nici măcar să alerge nu aveau voie, nu aveau nici un cuvânt de spus și trebuia să fie supuse. Asta doar din cauza uneor credințe oarbe. A fost și o poveste dură cu violență/abuz… 💛 Cartea are vibes de Anul de grație( în ceea ce privește situația femeilor), TOG ( pentru partea cu sângele, dar și creaturile ciudate) și A patra aripă(partea de școală și antrenamentele), deci dacă v-a plăcut vreuna din aceste povești, sigur vă place și Sânge auriu. Iar dacă nu ați citit niciuna, nu contează, tot trebuie să citiți “Sânge auriu”🤭🤭 merită mai multă popularitate 🥺 Q: ați citit cartea sau o aveți pe listă? I love these feminist fantasy novels! Book Review! The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna. ⭐ It was the best book I’ve read in a while. I loved the characters, especially the protagonist, Deka. She’s strong, yet unafraid of showing vulnerability. I loved her growth throughout the book. I loved the elements of sisterly bonds and found family. ⭐ The world-building was great and I loved the unique creatures in the book. The book wasn’t too fast-paced, just right for my taste. Yet it kept me on my toes and I had a hard time putting it down. When I wasn’t reading, my mind was constantly with the plot and characters, thinking what will happen next. ⭐ The book has so many secrets, and twists and I was constantly questioning everything. Les Immortelles T2 Avis :3,5/5 Terminé le 15/08/23 Le tome 1 avait été un coup de cœur tellement fort que je fut fort déçus en lisant ce tome 2. En réalité je ne sais pas pourquoi mais je m'attendais à que la saga soit une duologie et donc forcement quand on part avec cela en tête eh bien on trouve le tome 2 mou. Je pense que c'est ça principale reproche, le tome est beaucoup plus long que le 1, mais j'ai eu cette désagréable impression qu'il ne se passait pas grand-chose. On tourne en rond avec Déka, tout ça pour des révélations qui perso ne m'ont fait ni chaud ni froid contrairement au premier tome. Je pense que c'est ça principale reproche, le tome est beaucoup plus long que le 1, mais j'ai eu cette désagréable impression qu'il ne se passait pas grand-chose. Je me suis mélange dans tous les personnages, car rien que la bande de Deka, ils sont 5, il me semble, plus leur partenaire, ajoutais à cela des nouveaux personnages bref, j'étais complètement perdue à savoir qui été qui, et confondais certain perso qu'ils avaient plus ou moins les mêmes caractères ou la même importance. Bien que la fin était prévisible, j'ai bien aimé, j'ai trouvé qu'enfin l'action arrivée ce qui n'était pas désagréable au contraire. J'attends de voir le troisième tome si cela remonte.

Les Immortelles Tome 2 de Namina Forna 🌸 Mon avis 🌸 J’avais lu le premier tome de ce livre en janvier et me remettre dedans après tant de semaines n’a pas été une mince affaire. Mais la plume de l’autrice m’a absorbé dès les premières pages. La Fantasy et ses nombreux personnages, son worldbuilding complet, son intrigue, ses plots twists… C’est totalement mon genre littéraire préféré. Je ne peux que vous encourage à lire cette duologie. Dans ce deuxième tome, Deka est toujours aussi badass. Une femme forte comme on les aimes avec des fêlures de par son passé. On voyage d’une cité à l’autre et on vit des batailles et des combats (oui c’est tout ce que j’aime). ⚠️ Veuillez noter que ce livre contient des éléments explicites et sombres qui sont susceptibles de heurter la sensibilité d’un public non averti⚠️ Résumé : Elle a le pouvoir de sauver le monde... ou de le détruire. Coucou !😊 ⭐Avis lecture⭐ Les Immortelles de Namina Forna. Une plongée dans les mythes africains. L'univers est bien construit avec son histoire, sa géographie, sa faune. Le récit se lit très bien, mais il y a des scènes très dures, voire choquante, principalement au début; On peut voir ce que l'humanité peut faire de plus vil. Néanmoins c'est loin de refléter l'ambiance générale de l'histoire qui reste très agréables à lire. Ce n'est pas sombre, c'est même plutôt ensoleillé, même la nuit semble lumineuse parfois, comme si la lumière ne pouvait pas être éteinte. Bien au contraire. Quoiqu'il arrive, cette clarté sera toujours là. Ok, je m'égarre, mais c'est ce que j'ai ressenti 😊☀️ Au début j’ai eu du mal avec Déka, tellement endoctrinée et donc soumise qu’elle était à sa religion. Mais très vite elle s’en détache, sans même qu’elle ne s’en rende compte. Elle devient une jeune fille forte et fière. Keita est un jeune homme qui nous apparaît d’abord comme désagréable, mais il s’avère très vite être surtout un jeune garçon blessé par la vie et d’une incroyable loyauté, en particulier envers Déka. Malgré que cette dernière soit physiquement plus puissante que lui, cela n'a aucune importance. Je dirais même qu'il est une part de la force de l’héroïne. C’est une histoire de femmes qui s’émancipent du joug des hommes. Mais certains d’entre eux, ceux qui créent de vrais liens avec les alakis, sont différents et les soutiennent. Ils ne les voient pas comme des monstres. C’est une histoire féministe, une histoire qui prône l’égalité entre les hommes et les femmes, une histoire d'évolution qui tend vers un monde meilleur. Je levais les yeux au ciel (oui oui j’ai fait ça) et je me demandais si je devais continuer ou pas. 📚 Et puis BAM, je me suis laissée emporter par l’histoire et la magie de ce livre. J’ai aimé la force de caractère de Deka et de ses acolytes. 📚 J’ai aimé cette aventure qui l’emmène à l’autre bout du monde, dans une région étrangère avec des bêtes monstrueuses à sa suite. 📚 Mais que demande le peuple? Rien, juste lisez ce livre. Il est magique. 📚 C’est toujours la même chose avec les sagas… je n’ai plus qu’à attendre la suite et à me jeter dessus dès qu’il sortira. Sangue Dourado – Namina Forna (4 ⭐) . Em uma sociedade distópica, meninas não podem se machucar e ao chegar à mocidade passam por um processo que envolve sangue. Se o sangue for vermelho, tudo bem, mas se for dourado, será considerada uma párea e passará por torturas porque esse tipo de sangue, é considerado sangue amaldiçoado. . A leitura do livro foi bem fluida e quando dei por mim, já estava terminando. Amo livros escritos por autores negros, pois tem todas uma história/religiosidade/tradição por trás que gosto de ler bastante (o livro Defeito De Cor tinha e amava ler essas partes). . No começo, a narrativa é lenta nos apresentando o contexto, quem são os personagens, me lembrou o islamismo, quando elas ficam "moças", usam o lenço na cabeça; às vezes eu queria ver logo a ação porque achava que a narrativa já estava cansativa rsrsrs. . Aí chega ... E demora bem pouco, a autora contextualizou bem o começo e no final, só deu algumas explicações de onde ela veio, como foi concebida, queria saber mais, queria o aprofundamento que ela fez no começo. . O livro também é cruel, as torturas que elas sofrem, depois de descobrir sobre o plot twist fiquei triste ao saber o que estavam fazendo com elas mesmo depois de mortas. . Fiquei curiosa para o segundo livro e pretendo ler ele. . Hellooo bookstagram 🌻 Aujourd’hui je vous présente Les Immortelles : Les guerrières au sang doré de @namina.forna édité chez @desaxus « Parias par le sang… Guerrières par choix… » Une mythologie et un univers intéressant ! Ce fut une agréable surprise, c’était divertissant et inspirant. L’auteure tenait à mettre en valeur la résilience de ces filles qui sont obligées de vivre dans un monde cruel. J'avoue que cette société patriarcale ensablée dans une religion qu'ils croient aveuglément m'a fait grincer des dents un certain nombre de fois. Mais on est plonge très rapidement dans cet univers qui est bien construit avec sa mythologie au cœur de l’histoire et de la situation politique et religieuse actuelle. On sent vraiment que chaque protagoniste a été mûrement réfléchi où chaque élément à un rôle précis à jouer. L'auteure a une écriture fluide et plaisante à lire et elle amène parfaitement les révélations, rendant la lecture agréable. Je suis curieuse de voir où va nous emmener la suite de l’histoire. Motivul pentru care am terminat-o atât de greu a fost lipsa mea de timp cauzată de începerea școlii și probabil, faptul că n-am vrut să mă despart prea curând de lumea atât de frumos conturată din această carte și personajele ei. 🌿 Am să încep direct cu worldbuilding-ul, care în cartea asta mi-a depășit enorm așteptările. Totul a fost atât de bine pus la punct iar structura lui a fost cu siguranță una solidă și muncită. Construcția Oterei a avansat frumos în complexitate odată cu povestea și cu firul narativ și am apreciat pe rând fiecare detaliu. Deși la început primim cam multă informație despre tradițiile și zeii din Otera puțin cam de-a gata, acest lucru se reglează bine pe parcurs și totul devine mai ușor de digerat odată cu înaintarea plot-ului. 🏵 Plot-ul a fost chiar surprinzător de original, aș putea spune. Felul în care toate întâmplările au fost transpuse, tocmai prin ochii protagonistei, mi-a plăcut enorm de mult! Deși scrisă la prezent, la persoana I, cartea ne transmite foarte bine tot ceea ce a simțit Deka de-a lungul tuturor greutăților pe care a fost nevoită să le înfrunte. 🌿 Că tot am ajuns la Deka, aș vrea să spun câteva cuvinte și despre ea. Ca și protagonistă, Deka a evoluat frumos pe parcursul lecturii, de la o simplă fată a cărei menire nu o putea înțelege, devenind o femeie puternică, capabilă să treacă peste toate obstacolele întâlnite pe drumul către îndeplinirea adevăratului ei scop. Felul în care și-a schimbat mentalitatea și modul de a acționa în 400 și ceva de pagini este de apreciat. ❕️- continuarea în comentarii! -❕️
Book Review✨(with spoilers) The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna After Deka frees the goddesses(The Gilded Ones) in the first book, she has to fight and conquer multiple Jatu armies who continue to persecute the women in Otera (those with golden and red blood) and plan to attack and bring down the palace of the goddeses. But the goddeses also harbour very dangerous secrets about how the land of Otera came to be and what Deka is. On a mission to the capital city, Hemaira, in pursuit of the Hemairan emperor to question him, Deka finds out darker and darker secrets about the goddesses with every passing day, until she ultimately finds out that everything The Gilded Ones told her is false and they indeed are the demons who eat children, like she was taught growing up. I went through a whole range of emotions reading this book as at the end of the first book, the Goddeses were the sole founders of Otera(as they said) and in this book, Deka finds out that they had male counterparts, The Merciless Ones, whom they imprisoned so they could rule alone and put the women in the society above the men, so there was never equality in Otera. When the gods(The Merciless Ones) used their sons, the Jatu, to imprison the goddesses(The Gilded Ones) they made sure to pass laws to oppress and even kill the women, but before this, when the Gilded Ones first imprisoned the Merciless Ones, they also passed laws to oppress the men.

Book Review✨ The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna (Major spoilers ahead) "In Irfut, the priests told us that the Gilded Ones were actually ancient demons who'd ravaged Otera, slaughtering entire cities and eating children. We alaki were impure because we were their daughters: we carried their golden blood, their strength, speed and a portion of their longevity. The only way to earn purity - humanity - they said, was to help the entire fight against deathshrieks, monstrous creatures drawn by our blood. They never mentioned of course, that deathshrieks were actually alaki, resurrected by the Gilded Ones after death in terrifying forms so that we could fight jatu-led human forces who wanted to drive the Gilded Ones' line to extinction", Deka,(pg 10, The Merciless Ones Growing up, Deka and all the children of Otera were told the story of the Gilded Ones, demons whom killed people. The plot twist, however, is that "The Gilded Ones were never demons. They were Goddesses. They ruled Otera until their sons rose up against them. The jatu(their sons) desperately wanted to rule Otera, so they imprisoned their mothers and killed their sisters, along with all their children", Fatu of Izor. The plot twist in this book was done immaculately, I never saw it coming. The worlds and social atmospheres showed precisely what a world ruled by men whom hate women looks like, and some of it was uncomfortably similar to the world we live in today. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be giving it 3/5 stars. The ending was kind of resolved though, there was no cliffhanger that would make you jump across the room and grab the sequel, The Merciless Ones. And the romance, for me, felt a bit undeveloped, it felt rushed, there was no betrayal or anything significant that would make you want the main couple to be end game. But if social issues like patriarchy, misogyny etc. are issues of interest to you, this book will definitely be a sweet treat. (side note: this review probably made no sense, I tried to write something good but it's fantasy, how do you even review fantasy😭but you made it this far, so😉) Anyway, Happy Reading 🌹

The Gilded Ones - Namina Forna The next of my many fantasy reads, the Gilded Ones, made me think of Black Panther before I started reading, but they are nothing alike. Although we are launched right into the story without much build-up, I felt the story then progressed relatively slowly. For me, it took for the girls to arrive at the training camp for the story to pick up. From that point, I was completely hooked and so invested in seeing how the story would unfold. I was surprised at some of the revelations, and especially the ending really surprised me positively. Now I am excited for book 2. So after all that, if you enjoy fantasy novels that might start slow but get really good, this is the one for you. Oi gente.. Tudo bem com vocês ??? Vamos falar de Sangue Dourado, que eu li em parceria com a @camila_leitoracompulsiva , amiga muito obrigada por me mandar esse livro, ele é simplesmente maravilhoso. Tá não posso negar que aquele principio de romance era desnecessário, mas não estragou a experiência !! Vamos acompanhar Deka uma jovem que está pronta pra enfrentar o ritualt que vai dizer se ela pertence ou não a sua tribo, um ritual de sangue, e seu sangue precisa ser vermelho, isso significa que ela e digna e pura, e que faz parte da tribo, se ele for de outra cor o seu destino é a morte. This book was an onion in the most positive of ways. Layers baby, sooo many layers. Every time I thought it couldn't get better @namina.forna added another layer and the atmosphere changed again. OMG! I love, love, love, love this book so much! It was everything that I had hoped for and more. The black girl magic is a beautiful and a joy to behold. Although the way that these girls were treated just broke my heart. There are some serious content warnings for this book so please be sure to check them out before reading. I'm not easily triggered (thank goodness) but still many things that happened shocked me and it is truly horrifying. I wanted nothing more than for these precious girls to rise up and strike back! Also, it just makes my blood boil when books have the women being the cause of all the "bad things" that have happened or are happening in the world. WHEW! Ya girl was furious. If you don't know, The Gilded Ones focuses on a "Purital Ritual" which is designed to filter out the impure ones (girls only mind you) that bleed gold when cut. These poor unfortunate souls are destined for a life of brutality and death; however, they are now being "saved" and enlisted in the Kings army. Our main character Deka is my favorite character: she's an icon, she's a legend and she is the moment. You can't convince me otherwise. If this book doesn't make you want to rise up against the patriachy, nothing will. I gave this book 5 glorious stars and 10/10 would recommend to everyone. I cannot wait to read The Merciless Ones. Fans of The Legacy of Orïsha series will love this book. It’s rife with lore and mythology, an immersive world, and relatable characters. Deka must undergo the Ritual of Purity to prove that she is worthy of joining her village. She is a faithful girl who wants nothing more than to be pure. But when the time comes for the ritual, not only does it all go terribly wrong, but Deka isn’t pure. Her blood runs gold confirming her greatest fears. Deka experiences many horrors once the discovery is made. But then she’s given a choice: to stay at the mercy of those who would abuse her or leave and fight for the emperor and gain absolution. Embarking on this journey challenges everything Deka ever knew. As simple as it started out to be, it gets increasingly complicated the more she learns about her lineage, her country, and her mother. When she gets the knowledge she needs, will she make the right choice? I adored this book SO much. I hard a hard time pausing when I needed to. If I could’ve read this book and never had to stop and do anything I would have. This is probably the most feminist fantasy book I’ve read in a really long time.
