Happy Sunday! Booty and Cardio! It was a nice relaxing day. I stayed on the couch as long as I could… but I had to move eventually. Sigh. Workouts today were low impact. Felt like my body needed a break from weights. First workout was booty work. Kick here, squats there, throw in some lunges… easy workout but I felt it. Then walkies. The track was empty, the wind was blowing, it was nice! Took my sweaty self to the store with my list. Got my eggs, chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salad stuff… strict eating for the last 4 weeks of this damn challenge. I have to see some changes! Ordered myself a special gift if I wrap this thing up successfully… meaning I at least feel like I haven’t wasted 75 days and I’m not mushy and I can see muscle improvement. Should be delivered right before the challenge is up. While this picture has absolutely no relevance to the caption, I still want to pop in and say heyyyyy 👋🏻👋🏻 . Iv been seeing a lot of “IIFYM”- which means If It Fits Your Macros.. . I’m sure you have heard of it, and have seen your favorite “fitspo” posting it as they shove mac & cheese in their face 🙄. It has become the new “way” to reach your goals. . Simply put, you can eat whatever foods you want as long as you stay in your caloric allowance for the day. It essentially gives you the green light to order those fresh Krispy Kreme’s, go ham on Friday nights appetizers and happy hour drinks, and to wake up and smother your pancakes in butter. . But let’s think for two seconds. . Because there are more definitions to “health” than just the number on the scale isn’t there. . Yes, you can absolutely eat and ribs and lose weight. But do you think your body is getting the needed nutrients it needs? . That’s a big NO. . Sometimes I think we have lost sight of why we are all in this “fitness” thing- to feel the best we can. To perform the best we can. And to give our bodies THE BEST WE CAN. . Our bodies cannot be their best when we are giving them subpar fuel to run on. When we stop focusing on true HEALTH simply for the scale, we lose vital micronutrients. We lose vitamins. We lose fiber. We lose VEGETABLES. . Eat for your brain. Eat for your skin. Eat for your energy levels. Eat for your clarity. Eat for your hormones. Eat for everything else BUT the scale. Everything we are is affected by WHAT WE EAT-How you feel when you wake up.. how attentive you are driving to work... the elasticity of your skin, the clarity of your skin. Your hair. Your moods. Managed to slip up to @618barbell for a quick squat session yesterday. I must confess I was hungover and sleep deprived after a night out with friends on Friday, and my usual "I won't overdo it on the drinks" went out the window as usual. Anyway, was supposed to be 4x3 at 125kg, which I've only ever done in wraps previously. So of course I got in my own head and only managed triples on the first and last set with doubles in between. But still a big win despite there being quite a lot of ugly reps in there 😆 Backoffs 2x3 at 112.5kg and 2x5 paused high bars at 100kg. Nothing against high reps; in fact I like high reps from time to time.⁣ ⁣ For one, if you lift heavy (3-8 reps) year round, 3-5x/week, you’ll beat the crap out of your joints.⁣ ⁣ Yes, deloads help. But even with deloads, including phases with higher reps is beneficial.⁣ ⁣ As aforementioned, it’s easier on the joints, and its...hard. Doing a 20 rep set close to failure takes a lot of grit. ⁣ ⁣ And you can still build plenty of muscle in higher rep ranges.⁣ ⁣ But back to fat loss. ⁣ ⁣ I’m not a big believer in training for fat loss 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵.⁣ ⁣ You should achieve most of your fat loss from dialing in calories, not from your training sessions.⁣ ⁣ Now, that being said, I do think some circuit/metcon/whatever you want to call type training is fun, and has it’s place from time to time to mix it up, keep it interesting and improve adherence and enjoyment.⁣ ⁣ And one more important distinction: the weight should never feel “light” at the end of a set. Wishing everyone competing in the first FMG Show of the year today the very best. 🖤 It's not lost on me that show day, which is usually a fun and exciting time and a reminder of one of the best days of my life, is now falling over the worst. Reflecting today and seeing all the competitors gearing up for stage is bitter-sweet. I love to see my fellow athletes getting ready to step on stage and show what they've worked so hard for, but today I feel just empty. I hope everyone just takes the time to enjoy every moment of show day, slow down on stage and remember that everything you've been working for and building is important in the long run, regardless of placings. Comp prep helps build many things. Among them, resilience, grit, determination, discipline and courage. These traits I do my best to embody every day, outside of comp prep but particularly now as I'm struggling to come to terms with everything life has thrown at Basil this last week. To keep it together in a time where you have every reason to fall apart is a strength that training and working towards stage truly helped me build. Nationals Prep - Week 3! Another week, another change in plans. After deadlifting alone on Tuesday, I decided its not a vibe and asked to change back to Friday lol. Monday 15deg incline bench – 76.5kg x 9. I had to do 10 for no back off ☹. Back off was 72.5kg x 10. Tuesday Sumos - 142.5kg x 4; 147.5kg x 4; 152.5kg x 4. Felt off this session, was wondering if I was actually sick and went home and did a Covid test! Felt like it had been a long time since I trained, and the week away was catching up with me. But got it done, only the last rep of the last set was a bit lazy in maintaining the technique. Thursday TnG Bench – 96kg x 7. Very happy with the grind on the last rep, normally my right elbow reaches a certain point and wont budge! I got 6 with 96.5kg a few weeks ago, so I’m calling this a rep PB lol. Only one top set this session as I’ll be benching again on Monday! Friday Squats – 150kg x 4. Felt so much better than the last squat session. The wraps felt good, the squats felt fast. Something about squatting on a comp platform to help bring the energy! Again, one top set, as I’m squatting again on Tuesday. Sumos – 165kg x 3! Wasn’t expecting this in week 3 lol. Had to throw in a heavy deadlift today because I wont deadlift again until next Friday.
