I kinda rewrote wish In the concept art the king and queen were a villainous duo so I’m keeping that. Starting with king magnifico, for my version I’m going with the sympathetic villain route because of his backstory we are given and the reason he doesn’t grant certain wishes and forbids others to use magic is to make sure his kingdom doesn’t fall like his village did. Queen Amaya is going to be the “classic Disney villain” basically doing bad things to stay in power. Their rule over the kingdom is a utopia, but only if you obey their rules and don’t question the king or queen, or you’ll be imprisoned. Also you HAVE to give up your wish to stay in the kingdom and of course the loss of a wish drains apart of yourself. But idk that’s just my fix. 🤷♀️

Recently, I have had two spikes in writing success. One short story won second prize in Prairie Fire magazine. And another got longlisted for the CBC Fiction Prize. When I was writing these stories, I intentionally looked to the setting to enhance and enliven my writing. Many writers think of setting as a backdrop. The place where the story happens. Sure, maybe you write a long poetic description or two. But the descriptions stay separate from the events of the story. Separate from the characters’ actions and reactions. This is a challenging question, one there is no hard fast answer for. It depends on the character, their inner workings, the situation, what you want the reader to feel, and your style. ❗️But all too often, I see writers leave out interiority completely 😫⚠️ Part of this is the writer’s curse of knowledge, meaning that you, as the writer, understand what is motivating your character and how they feel. Because of that, it is easy to forget to put it on the page in a way a reader can experience it. But sometimes writers are scared they’re telling vs. showing and that’s NOT the case … not when it’s done well, in a way that allows the reader to make connections and understand context without “authorsplaining.” Solution: err on the side of caution and overdo the interiority because you can always pull it out later if it’s overkill. Every time something happens in the story that your character should react to–make them react on the page. Show the reader how it affects them by putting words to their thoughts, feelings, and reflections. Show us that they experience physical manifests in their bodies. Doing so will provide us with the context to understand how the moment affects them and make sense of what they want and will do next. Now, there are times when interiority isn’t necessary. There may be a time where an author chooses to show action instead of the inner workings of a character’s mind and it can be incredibly intense, so much so the context is built in. I've done a fair bit of hiking the last couple weeks and gotten to really enjoy some gorgeous settings. This has me thinking about the settings in my own WIP. My favorite setting I've written involves giant hazel trees ringing a soft meadow. “Silences, strung like crystal beads onto someone else’s, song” brings to mind a melancholic tone, reminiscent of the loneliness that accompanies the feeling of disconnect from the world. Every silence, like a solitary crystal bead, serves as a stark reminder of the absence of shared experiences and meaningful connections. Comparing these silences as being intertwined with “someone else’s song” evokes a sense of longing and yearning for companionship. It’s as if, in our solitude, we find solace in the fleeting echoes of past interactions, like the tinkling melodies of crystal beads in a gentle breeze, longing for the comfort of belonging to something greater than ourselves. . The final stanza of “Someone Else’s Song,” from Kamala Das’ first poetry collection “Summer in Calcutta,” reflects on the quiet solitude that follows the cacophony of voices. She penned these lines after moving to Calcutta following her marriage. Immersed in her own loneliness, she contemplates the echoes of past connections that have since faded into the dusty attic of memory. Through the lens of her loneliness, these lines become an exploration of her enduring ache of isolation and her longing for connection that is apparent in all her writings. They invite us to empathize with her solitude, and find resonance in the echoes of our own yearning for companionship amidst these twinkling silences. . Ssssh, come here - I have a secret for you 👀🤫 Okay cool, you're in? You can hear me? Excellent. Ready? 💭You have an editing process for a reason💭 When you're writing your story, don't worry so much about refining it as you write. Write, then when you go to edit, refine. Why? Because sometimes in order to get from point a to b, you need it to start as getting from point a to k. Then when it's time to edit, you get rid of the letters in between and K becomes the new B. Why should you do this? Here's why: ✅ You know where you're starting and you know where you want to go, but how to get there in a way that's most logical might feel like a struggle. Writing out everything in between can help you go with the flow and understand what direction you need to take your story in. ✅ You don't actually know where B is quite yet. You might have a general idea, OR you might have absolutely no idea at all. Allowing yourself to write the scenes that come through - even if they feel odd or you already KNOW that they're going to be scrapped in the editing process - they somehow manage to get you to where you want to be in a way that makes sense. repeat after me: there's an editing process for a reason. Got it? Excellent. Are you ready to edit your novel? Bible Post 5 of ??? Genesis 1:26 When I read the Bible, I found the line 'And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our own likeness' (Genesis 1:26) very interesting for two reasons. To begin with, if Christianity and Judaism are considered monotheistic religions, why have plural pronouns ('us' and 'our') been used. Secondly, who is God talking to? The reason for this grammatical discrepancy was due to a mistranslation of the verse when the Bible was translated from Hebrew to English. In Genesis 1:26, the word translated as 'God' in English was 'elohim' in the Hebrew original. The word 'elohim' does not mean 'God' (singular noun) but instead means 'Gods (plural nouns)'. This is the reason why plural pronouns are used as they are grammatically correct in their usage in the Hebrew original but not in the English mistranslation. The same mistranslation can also be found in Genesis 3:22. But yeah, this really is the first novel that I wrote till the end. Is it the end of a story? Not really. In fact, I already have plans for the second book. I always thought about it as a duology. Now I'll let it rest for a couple of weeks or months before I go back and begin editing.
