June TBR! I’ve reached the point where I have so many books on my TBR shelf that I can no longer make rational reading decisions on my own. Putting together my June stack, I quickly and easily chose my two #24in24 books: Chris Broad’s Abroad in Japan (we’re planning a trip for June 2025) and Craig Wallwork’s The Ghost of Stormer Hill (the third book in his Tom Nolan series, which I’m long overdue to finish). But beyond that, I just stood there staring at my shelf, thinking, “I WANT TO READ ALL OF THESE.” So I did what any fickle person paralyzed by indecision would do: I spun the Big Wheel o’ Titles. That’s right, friends. Those of you who followed me through my book-buying ban and TBR-clearing project of 2021 / 2022, you’ll be seeing a lot more of the wheel in the near future. (And see a post later today or tomorrow for my future plans for another ban and TBR-clearing endeavor.) As always, the wheel (and my generally impeccable taste) gave me some good selections for June. The only one I don’t know anything about – other than the synopsis sounded good – is A History of Wild Places. The others, though, I’ve long wanted to read, especially The Silence of the Lambs, which I’ve weirdly (and inexplicably) never tried before. The big drawback to this approach? It seems wrong not to be reading anything by an LGBTQ+ author during Pride month or a Black author during the month when we celebrate Juneteenth. I’ll be sure to take steps to promote those authors in other ways. See anything you like in this stack? 📚 Chronique 📚 La dernière maison avant les bois de Catriona Ward publié ici chez @editions_pocket J'ai passé ce livre en audio et ce fut une bonne surprise. Au premier abord ce roman est assez déroutant. Une jeune fille a disparu. Onze ans plus tard sa grande sœur n'est toujours pas remise et décide de mener son enquête. Ses soupçons se portent sur son voisin Ted, qui semble un peu bizarre, et vit presque en reclus avec sa chatte Olivia. Peu à peu le lecteur découvre un récit grinçant où les apparences sont trompeuses! J'ai été vraiment troublée et fascinée à certains moments par la psychologie du personnage de Ted. Il est complexe et peut vite passer pour un coupable. Pourtant lorsque l'autrice lève le voile sur son passé, il faut s'attendre à de nombreuses surprises! La fin arrive petit à petit comme un oignon que l'on pèle et où on découvre chaque couche du dénouement en ce disant "mais naaan".... l'autrice va loin et l'explication à la fin du récit est très intéressante. Un très bon moment de lecture à côté duquel je serais probablement passé si Pocket ne me l'avait pas envoyé 😄 Je vous le recommande si vous aimez les récits sombres, entre thriller et roman noir, avec des dénouement vraiment bien ficelés! When I first started reading this, I didn't think it would diverge into such a heart wrenching narrative because of how quirky and offbeat it seemed in the beginning. It still maintained some of that quality throughout the book (especially in Olivia's chapters), but not as much so once you have more of a grasp of what's going on. Speaking of Olivia's chapters, I found them the most enjoyable and I really liked her as a character. The way she views the world is exactly how I think a cat might actually see things through their eyes. I do kind of wish the revelation was different, but it wasn't necessarily bad - just not as original as I had hoped based off of the hype. 🌲 La dernière maison avant les bois 🌲 Il y a 11 ans, la petite sœur de Dee, Lulu, a disparu. L’enquête est toujours ouverte mais n’a jamais été résolue. L’histoire tourne autour de trois principaux points de vue : celui de Ted Bannerman, l’un des suspects dans l’affaire, un marginal vivant barricadé dans une maison isolée - celui de Dee, dont le monde s’est effondré après la disparition de sa sœur, et qui cherche à tout prix à la retrouver en emménageant dans la maison voisine de Ted - puis, innatendument, il y a aussi le point de vue d’Olivia, la chatte de Ted, qui ne fait qu’ajouter une perplexité déjà bien présente. ————————————————————————————— Il est impossible de réellement parler de ce livre sans risquer d’en révéler le dénouement. Les différents points de vue nous plongent immédiatement dans l’histoire, tout en accentuant notre incompréhension. Pendant le premier quart du livre, on ne sait pas ce qu’il se passe, où on est ni où on va, et pourtant, on a envie d’en savoir plus. Je pense que n’importe quel lecteur de ce livre a, à un moment ou un autre, eu une hypothèse similaire. C’est pour cette raison que le dénouement a mis, à mon avis, beaucoup de gens sur le cul, moi la première. On commence à deviner le fin mot de l’histoire légèrement avant la fin mais globalement le suspense reste omniprésent. Ce thriller m’a tenu éveillée jusqu’à 4h du matin. J’ai adoré me plonger dans l’histoire et émettre des hypothèses (fausses), qui prouvent que ce livre n’est pas un polar/thriller classique. Cependant, je suis toujours assez perplexe quand à l’explication finale. Je pense ne pas avoir apprécié la tournure des événements au départ tellement je ne m’y attendais pas, puis j’ai du reconnaître que la plume et la réflexion de l’auteure sont tout bonnement admirable, tout comme le sujet qu’elle a choisi de traiter. Let’s talk rereads (and Catriona Ward)! I reread this novel in two days since I joined a reader group in which we are annotating books and shipping them to each other to annotate each other’s favorites with everyone getting a specific color assigned to them. Then at the end of the cycle we will get our books back with a ton of annotations! I chose this book because after reading it two years ago, I still cannot get it out of my head. It is just that fantastic. Ward is and always will be one of my favorite authors ever since Last House of Needless Street. I still have to read The Girl from Rawblood but it is on my list for this year. All of Ward’s work is fantastic but Little Eve stands above in my opinion. Annotations? Love them? Hate them? Je me suis régalée sur cette partie du livre, celle à laquelle on a réponse à toutes nos questions. En tout cas, la réalité est bien loin de ce que l'on pense savoir... Done reading: #TheLastHouseOnNeedlessStreet by #CatrionaWard As I kept going through the book—a quarter through, midway—I kept asking myself ‘where’s the scary part?’ While the novel was categorised horror, to me it wasn’t. A thriller yes, but the story’s much much more complex than your typical hair-raising plots. Ward’s storytelling was good. Crisp, straightforward, vivid, detailed in character sketching. I was transported into “the house”, one of the settings, and felt the gloom and doom. I smelled the damp forest grounds. Somewhere along the way, I proved my hunch to be right. But the intricacies were more pronounced and explained in the last few chapters. Si vous vous lancez dans cette lecture et que vous comprenez pas tout ne vous en faites pas. Quand vous réussirez à assembler toutes les pièces du puzzle, vous n’en reviendrez pas. J’ai été bluffée par cet intrigue très addictive. J’ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Ted qui m’a donné des frissons, m’a mis dans tous mes états, m’a fait angoisser mais qui a su au final me toucher en plein cœur par sa personnalité si atypique. La dernière maisons avant les bois fait partie de ces livres pour lesquels moins vous en savez mieux c’est. Je vous laisse donc un avis volontairement très flou afin de ne gâcher aucune surprise. . 2024-96. L'autrice nous a habitué dès son premier roman à ne pas se fier aux apparences. Alors forcément quand on attaque celui-ci, on se méfie et on est attentif. Mais voilà, il y a tant et tant de personnages qui changent de prénoms, de retour dans le passé, de changement de points de vue, des frères des pères et des mères inconnus, sans compter la sorcellerie, et surtout un livre qui parle d'un livre qui parle d'un livre qui parlent de faits passés, mais peut-être légendaires, que finalement je me suis perdu dans trop de répétitions (forcément puisque une histoire racontée de diverses façons). Si je crois avoir compris la globalité, je suis déçu de n'avoir certainement pas compris la finalité ou la subtilité - si tant est qu'il y en est une, le but réussi ayant été de perdre le lecteur. Pour quoi faire simple quand on peut faire TRÈS compliqué ? Sinon le départ pouvait être prometteur : des jeunes qui tentent de découvrir un tueur en série, qui réussissent, mais qui doivent ensuite vivre avec ça toute leur vie, en n'ayant pas tout avoué entre eux non plus ! "Mirror Bay" de Catriona Ward 😍😍😍 Après "La dernière maison avant les bois" qui m’avait bien retourné le cerveau, j’attendais beaucoup de ce deuxième roman de Catriona Ward. Et je n’ai pas été déçue. Encore une fois, l’autrice a su m’embarquer dans son histoire et proposer un thriller surprenant, comportant plusieurs niveaux de lecture et plusieurs narrateurs. Tout commence comme une histoire très classique : Wilder, un ado mal dans sa peau, va découvrir l’amitié et l’amour le temps d’un été au bord de la mer, alors que quelqu’un s’introduit chez des vacanciers pour prendre leurs enfants en photo pendant qu’ils dorment… C’est à travers les mémoires de Wilder que le lecteur découvre son histoire… Mais très vite, on comprend que Catriona Ward tisse une toile bien plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît, pour mieux nous embrouiller, avec en toile de fond le pouvoir des mots, de la lecture et de l’écriture. Ce thriller est un véritable livre à énigmes, parsemés d’indices, de points de vue multiples, et de fausses pistes. Comment démêler le vrai du faux ? Mais chut, impossible de vous en dire plus sans trop en dévoiler. Il y a un peu de Donna Tartt dans ce livre, un peu de "La vérité sur l’affaire Harry Québert" aussi, dans le traitement du travail de l’écrivain notamment. J’ai en tout cas passé un très bon moment de lecture. Mission accomplie, donc, pour Catriona Ward, qui m’a encore une fois retourné le cerveau ! Povestea aceasta mi-a stârnit sentimente contradictorii. Mi-am petrecut mare parte din timpul în care am citit-o cu o senzație de neliniște, provocată de subiectul ei şi convinsă că nu are ce să se schimbe până la final. Adevărul este că sunt câteva teme care mă ating mai mult decât altele, iar aici am găsit una din ele. Poate chiar două. Acum, că am terminat-o de vreo săptămână şi s-au mai așezat lucrurile, sunt mai în măsură să o văd în ansamblu şi să apreciez intenția şi munca autoarei. Lo había visto en algunas cuentas de bookstagram y lo cierto es que todas las reseñas eran fantásticas ¡Y no se equivocaban! 📚 TÍTULO: La casa al final de Needless Street ✍️ AUTOR: Catriona Ward @catward66 📖 OPINIÓN PERSONAL 📖 Hace once años, una niña pequeña de nombre Lulu desapareció en una excursión a un lago, acompañada de sus padres y de su hermana mayor. Tiempo después, la historia nos presenta a Ted, un hombre muy extraño que vive en una casa cuyas ventanas están tapiadas con tablas de madera, de su gata Olivia, su hija Lauren y la investigación que Dee, la hermana de Lulu, emprende para hallar respuestas a tantos años de incerteza. ¿Cómo hacer una reseña de esta historia sin caer en spoilers? La pequeña sinopsis que habéis leído en el párrafo anterior, se trata solamente de la punta del iceberg de todos los secretos que guarda esta novela. La historia está narrada a varias voces. Por un lado, tenemos a Ted, alguien que en su momento fue sospechoso de la desaparición de Lulu, de Dee, su hermana mayor y de Lauren, la hija de Ted. Sin olvidarnos de Olivia, la gata que vive con Ted y que narra los acontecimientos que vive en casa de su dueño como un personaje más. Decir que la trama de este libro contiene una desaparición, y que va dejando pistas a lo largo de sus páginas es quedarse muyyyy corto. Al principio y bien entrada la historia, tenía la sensación de que no estaba entendiendo nada de lo que estos personajes me estaban contando, a excepción de Dee, que manifiesta sus intenciones desde un principio: encontrar a su hermana que lleva desaparecida once años y cuyo principal sospechoso, parece ser Ted. A pesar de que tenía la sensación de no saber adonde quería llegar la autora, no podía dejar de leer debido a que la narración de los personajes resulta muy atrayente. Este es un libro que hay que leer a ciegas porque realmente es sorprendente. No resulta nada fácil hacer una reseña sin entrar en detalles que revelen parte de la trama. ➡️ Continúa en comentarios ➡️

Dostajemy elementy układanki i kiedy już wszystko ładnie układa nam się w głowie w odrażającą historię o seryjnym mordercy, to okazuje się, że prawda wygląda inaczej, a co najlepsze - wszystko odgadliśmy na opak i widzimy, że można to było jednak inaczej odczytać. Po drugie, należy cierpliwie przetrwać dwa pierwsze rozdziały. Ja to odebrałam tak: w pierwszym bredzenie osoby upośledzonej umysłowo, w drugim gadający kot, w dodatku - co chyba każdy zauważył - czytający biblię... Naprawdę rozważałam rzucenie tej książki w ciemny kąt, ale pomyślałam, że sprawdzę opinie. A tu średnia na lubimyczytac.pl 7,1. Świetnie, więc mimo wszystko czytam dalej i to była dobra decyzja, bo od trzeciego rozdziału historia zaczęła się rozkręcać, aż trudno było książkę odłożyć Nie przybliżę tej historii, to co napisałam wyżej powinno wystarczyć, a każda próba opowiedzenia o książce czegokolwiek więcej, mogłaby się skończyć niepotrzebnym spamem albo mimowolnym zafałszowaniem tej historii, to trzeba samemu przeczytać. Zaginiona przed laty dziewczynka, jej siostra próbująca odnaleźć sprawcę tego porwania, #ostatnidomnazapomnianejulicy z oknami zabitymi dyktą i jego ponury lokator niespełna rozumu... Zaraz, zaraz, czy on na pewno mieszka tam sam? O co do ch.le.y chodzi z tym gadającym kotem??? "Anyway the trick to life is, if you don’t like what is happening, go back to sleep until it stops" (32). 4⭐ Honestly, the thought of writing a review for The Last House on Needless Street is utterly intimidating. First, because I haven’t written a book review in a very long time (plus I’ve only just gotten back into reading…and both my ability to concentrate and my memory are, unfortunately, not great at the moment). And, second, because this book is…wonderfully complicated. Reading this book was, legit, an ~experience~. My lightly penciled marginalia throughout my paperback copy is kind of hilarious…a snapshot of my in-the-moment reactions (QUOI?...OMG…Enhh…Noo…?!...etc.) and ever-evolving theories/interpretations. And, my God, the more I read, the more they evolved. Like REALLY evolved. Catriona Ward has written the literary horror embodiment of an onion (or, to use some of her imagery, a Russian doll) and, let me tell you, is she ever deft and artful as she slowly peels back the layers. Και αρχίζει να πιστεύει πως μόνο μία από τις δυο τους θα φύγει ζωντανή από το Σαντάιαλ. 📚Η άποψη μου: Είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο της συγγραφέως που διαβάζω και μόνο τώρα κατάλαβα αυτό που αναφέρουν όλοι, ότι παίζει με το μυαλό του αναγνώστη και δεν ξέρεις τι να περιμένεις. Εδώ έχουμε ένα ψυχολογικό θρίλερ που σίγουρα δεν μοιάζει με κανένα άλλο του είδους. Έχει αρκετές ανατροπές μέχρι και τις τελευταίες σελίδες και δένει με έντονες περιγραφές το παρελθόν και το παρόν. Επίσης η συγγραφέας μέσα σε αυτή την σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα θιγει και αρκετά κοινωνικά μηνύματα όπως οι οικογενειακές σχέσεις (αδέρφια, μητέρας- κόρης), την ενδοοικογενειακή βία και το πως το περιβάλλον που έχουμε μεγαλώσει διαμορφώνει τον χαρακτήρα μας. Το μόνο αρνητικό που βρήκα είναι ότι σε κάποια σημεία σε μπερδεύε αρκετά και το βρήκα λιγο αχρείαστο για την εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. 🖤Déception🖤 Mais quelle déception après le coup de cœur pour La dernière maison avant les bois, le premier roman de Catriona Ward ! D'après les avis lus sur Instagram, ce nouveau roman s'annonçait dingue. Le roman débute par les mémoires non-éditées de Wilder. Il raconte un été à Whistler Bay avec ses nouveaux amis Harper et Nat. Le récit est ensuite construit sous forme de puzzle ou de poupées gigognes. Un récit dans l'autre et d'autres éléments qui s'ajoutent. J'ai noté trois polices de caractères différentes pour chaque histoire imbriquée et quelques liens entre tous les morceaux de l'histoire globale mais comme je n'ai pas eu de sympathie pour les personnages, je n'ai pas réussi à entrer dans ce livre. Malheureusement je me suis ennuyée, lassée de ces aventures d'ados, qui pourtant servent au twist final et à la construction tetris du récit. J'ai terminé le livre assez vite. The boredom was enough to lull me into sleep, and ngl reading from a cat’s pov weirded me out! Despite my initial reluctance, I persevered—because I hate leaving books unfinished. I’m truly grateful I did because the second half made it all worthwhile! As the story progressed, I found myself completely engrossed, unable to tear myself away from the pages. This book is a true masterpiece; its writing is flawlessly exquisite, and it continues to linger in my thoughts long after I’ve finished it! Experiencing a true psychological thriller is an unparalleled thrill. It’s truly mind-blowing. If you’ve picked this up, I’m confident you’ll give it five shining stars, maybe even more. Sundial (2023) - Catriona Ward Después de meses esperando en mis estanterías, por fin he leído el último libro que me quedaba de Catriona; una escritora que descubrí el año pasado y se ha convertido en una de mis favoritas. Y es también una autora de la que me resulta muy difícil hablar porque escribe historias muy rebuscadas de las que es mejor saber lo menos posible. En "Sundial" seguimos a una familia que tiene dos hijas, pero sobre todo es una historia de maternidad. Una historia asfixiante que veremos sobre todo desde el punto de vista de su protagonista, Rob, y de cómo tiene que lidiar con la vida que pensaba que quería, pero que ha resultado ser muy diferente. Sin embargo, pese a estar muy centrada en la maternidad y en cómo afrontar según qué situaciones, también se centra en Rob como persona. Para mí el punto fuerte de la novela es ella sin duda. Catriona consigue ponerte en su lugar y que te plantees qué harías tú en esa situación. Sin embargo, a pesar de lo mucho que disfruté leyéndolo, al terminar me di cuenta de que no había conectado tanto como con otras de sus novelas. Y, algo que me ha sorprendido mucho, es que es más cercana a nuestra cotidianidad que sus otras obras, pero no me ha parecido tan verosímil. Green! 💚 While scouring my shelves for this I realised I have a concerning lack of green books, considering it’s one of my favourite colours. Will i be prioritising green covers when I’m done with my book buying ban? Absolutely. I’ve only read Haven out of this lot, and I was pretty disappointed by it unfortunately. I’m hoping to start the Ali Smith series this year!
