I didn’t have him on my radar until Chris Golden mentioned this book was coming out. I actually bought it without reading the synopsis, based solely on Golden’s review. That’s trust! I think Among The Living is considered Eco Horror and Sporror. The whole story centers around mankind’s destruction of the earth, and the earth fighting back. Normally, I find this kind of subject boring in horror. It’s usually done with plants fighting back etc. Not this book! It’s got ancient beings that are coming back to life with the thawing, and they are horrific! To top it off, they carry an intelligent disease that will wipe out mankind. You know we all have PTSD from Covid, so this has a slight hint of realness in their fear. Combine that with climate change, omfg!!! One by one characters are picked off. After the first death you know what’s going to happen. But it gets more terrifying as the characters are hunted, and fighting back only makes it worse. You know what has to be done, and expect the ending..but Tim Lebbon doesn’t let go that easily. This book was brilliant! I flew through it. I loved the writing style, the subject matter, absolutely everything! Im not hearing a lot about this book, and we need to change that!! Dean and his colleagues searching for rare minerals on a remote artic island come across a cave containing a mysterious set of mummified people, and unknowingly unleash an ancient terror that had lain dormat under the ice. The action started fairly quickly with the deadly spores taking over almost as soon as they were in the caves. The tension kept on as the group try to outrun it, both to escape and to try and stop it contaminating the island....and then the world. I liked that while improbable, it was rooted enough in reality to make it chilling (couldnt help myself with an ice related pun 😉). Covid has shown how quickly a disease can spread and with melting ice at the poles it is possible something lies dormant (although probably not a mind controlling zombie fungus...I hope!). I have a phobia of mummies (I refuse to go on the room with them in the British Museum) so that added to the creepy factor for me. Happy Alien Day 👽 To celebrate I thought I’d share a mini review for an Alien franchise book: Alien: Out of The Shadows by Tim Lebbon 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Going to potentially cause some outrage here but I think I like this book more than any of the films 😂 The characters are interest, and Ripley plays a key role too so fans of her will be happy, and I liked the storyline as well even if it wasn’t anything group breaking. There’s a fair big action in it which I was a fan of, one of the reason I’m not a fan of the original film is the lack of action, so for me this was good. ✨ Audiobook Review ✨ 📖 The Silence ✍🏻 Tim Lebbon 💭 Imagine having to be silent in a world that’s constantly full of noise or else you’ll be eaten by bat like creatures…Ally’s family is already a little prepared for this sudden new world of having to be quiet as she is deaf so her and her family can communicate by sign language. However, nothing can prepare them for the brutality and violence of this new world…not just by the creatures themselves but by other humans. I absolutely loved this. I love books that make you wonder how you would handle certain situations, but in all reality, we don’t know what we would until we were in that moment. Like it’s terrifying to think as a mother of a toddler how would we learn to survive with no noises since we all know that it’s virtually impossible for them to be quiet 🤐 another thing I wonder about is how in almost all of these apocalyptic type books, humanity is one of the main evils. Like it’s so crazy to me that on top of just trying to survive whatever calamity is happening, you also have to worry about it bringing out the worst in humanity. As I’ve said before, the ending to this is HORRIBLE. It ends so abrupt, and not in a cliffhanger way. I was listening to this on audio and when the ending credits started rolling, I was like “wait hold on, that’s it??!” The audiobook is great, and I loved the narrators. Even though the ending sucked, I still recommend if you like dystopian… This is also a movie, but I do not recommend it…Bad acting. The Silence was a book I lucked out on thru my library as it's normally got a long waitlist. I've seen the movie and thought it was creepy. After reading the book (which imo was better than the movie!), I can confidently say it belongs in a Venn diagram of birdbox and the quiet place. It's not bad but still very "the deaf daughter is saving us cause she's deaf and skilled in *checks notes* being quiet?" Sort of doesn't make sense other than that the family is proficient at sign language. The plot is sightless monster rat bats escape from a cave and absolutely wreck cities using their echolocation to devastate anything making noise. They have a rapid reproduction cycle which is triggered by noise as well so - not great. No real solution either, just keeps going. I wish it had gone on longer or had more of a conclusion tbh, not sure if there's a follow up but I'll keep an eye out. Jetzt ist der 10 Jährige Daniel allein mit seinem Dad, der den Tod seiner Frau auf eigene Art versucht zu verarbeiten. Er beginnt sich sehr zu verändern und eines Abends findet Daniel im Schlafzimmer seines Vaters eine große Holzkiste unter dem Bett. Und als er behutsam dagegen klopft... klopft es zurück. Die Geschichte hat mich zum weinen gebracht. Mitten im Zug nach Hause, vor allen Leuten. Es wird sehr gut dargestellt, wie ein Junge und sein Vater auf unterschiedliche Art mit dem Tod einer geliebten Person umgehen. Wir haben teil an den Gedanken und gefühlen von Daniel und beobachten aus seiner Perspektive seinen Dad, der am Boden ist. Eine atemberaubend, dramatische Geschichte mit Horrorelmenten, die einen echt fertig macht. Genre: Paralleluniversums- Zombie- Apokalypse Thriller. Die größte Entdeckung der Menschheit ist ein Tor zu einer anderen Welt zu erschaffen. Das gelingt in dem Labor Coldbrook. Aber damit setzen sie eine Seuche auf unserer Welt frei die innerhalb kürzester Zeit Milliarden von Menschen tötet und sie in Zombies verwandeln. Nur wenige überleben und versuchen ein Heilmittel gegen die Seuche zu finden. Das ist ein richtiger Backstein ( die armen Handgelenke ) aber eine unfassbar gute Story. Sie war auch sehr blutig, deswegen ist das Buch nichts für Zartbeseitete. Tim Lebbon's Schreibstil ist sehr gut und man kommt beim Lesen zügig voran. Vergebe 4 von 5 Sternen. I enjoyed the complexities of the characters, who to trust, who not to trust, is everyone lying? Parts of this book really unsettled me, and it is rare that a horror book can reach that level for me. When Dean's team unearths a truly life-threatening danger in the Artic he is luckily found by his ex-friend Bethan and her team of do-gooders. The groups are quick to fight but there is no denying that something that threatens all of man kind is lose and only they can stop it. Completely credible and absolutely haunting, I hope this becomes a movie! My only complaint is I would have liked a bit more drama in the journey and even more about the characters. This could have easily been a longer book and better for it. All and all though - absolutely perfect for something to keep you up all night and nights after as you worry about the very real possibilities. I am off to read some more Tim Lebbon! I found out that I have failed my 3 most important exams for this semester (all by only a few points, which was so frustrating!) and spend the last few weeks learning like crazy to retake them. I call this one, “A Stack of Books I’d Love to See Adapted for Movies or Television.” (I call it that because that’s what it is.) With the recent news that Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter will soon be hitting a TV near you, I’ve been thinking about other books I’d love to see captured onscreen. These 12 books are ones I think would be compelling to adapt visually, and they also feature stories that seem tailor made for a film or limited TV series. (In fact, I’d really only want to see Wanderers as a series. Trying to cram that book into 2 – or even 3 – hours would undoubtedly do it a monumental disservice.) There is of course always the danger that I’d see one of my favorite books given the Demi-Moore-in-Scarlet-Letter treatment, but it would be worth it for the chance to see any of these become the next Out of Sight, Election, or High Fidelity. W styczniu na Mrocznych Stronach dominowało sci-fi, nic więc dziwnego, że pierwsze dwa miejsca na podium zgarnęły powieści reprezentujące ten gatunek. Trzecie miejsce zajął mój styczniowy patronat - debiut Julii Halladin. 🥇 KONIEC AKCJI ARKA | Arkadij Strugacki & Borys Strugacki To było dla mnie niemałe zaskoczenie. Sięgając po ten klasyk sci-fi, w pierwszym polskim wydaniu, nie spodziewałem się książki aż tak dobrej. Bardzo przemyślana i mądra opowieść o próbie kolonizacji nowej planety, to jednocześnie wiwisekcja człowieka, który stawia sobie kolejne pytania i szuka na nie odpowiedzi. "Koniec akcji >Arka<" to fantastyka w starym dobrym stylu; stylu, który mnie osobiście zachwycił. 🥈 OBCY: WYJŚCIE Z CIENIA | Tim Lebbon Po 4 części filmowego "Obcego" myślałem, że będzie to już tylko równia pochyła, tymczasem Tim Lebbon zaskoczył mnie i to baaardzo mocno. "Wyjście z cienia" rozgrywa się między 1 a 2 częścią filmu, ale to zupełnie nowa jakość, jeśli chodzi o franczyzę "Obcego". "Wyjście z cienia" to powieść pełną gębą z bardzo dobrze napisanymi bohaterami i ciekawą historią, która pozwala nam zgłębić mitologię ksenomorfów. Dla fanów kosmicznych brzydali, ale nie tylko. 🥉 RYKOWISKO | Julia Halladin Niektórzy unikają debiutów jak ognia, trzymając się swoich ulubionych autorów, ja jednak wciąż szukam nowych nazwisk, dlatego na debiutantów zawsze jestem otwarty. Julia Halladin w literaturę wchodzi mocną i mroczną powieścią będącą mieszanką thrillera i kryminału z mocnym wątkiem słowiańskim i ciekawą, wciągającą historią. I had a very exciting mail day yesterday! I received my @inkstonebooks edition of Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void signed by author Tim Lebbon. This hardcover is absolutely beautiful, with blue edging on the pages and a plastic dustjacket to cover and protect the actual dustjacket. I really like how it has the same cover design as the regular Essential Legends release, but seeing it in a hardcover, the book looks even more majestic. This book was packaged for shipment very well so overall I'm very satisfied and so happy I got this. Last year, I also picked up Inkstone's Rise of the Red Blade limited edition, so I knew I'd be getting this book when it was announced, too. 🆁🅴🅲🅴🅽🆉🅹🅰 (...) Wydawać by się mogło, że "Obcy: Wyjście z cienia" to kolejny akcyjniak rozgrywający się w kosmosie, w którym jedyne co znajdziemy, to szybkie tempo i szybką śmierć kolejnych bohaterów. Nic bardziej mylnego. Napisana w 2014 roku powieść Tima Lebbona, autora m.in. trylogii "The Rage War" osadzonej również w uniwersum Obcego, to dreszczowiec science-fiction z elementami akcji, ale w przeciwieństwie do "Obcego: Decydujące starcie" czy "Obcego 4: Przebudzenie", ta akcja nie dominuje całej fabuły. Tim Lebbon daje nam za to ciekawą historię, w której nieco bardziej zgłębimy mitologię ksenomorfów, ale także tych, którzy być może stworzyli te bestie, a może byli tylko ich kolejnymi ofiarami? W każdym razie pojawia się zupełnie nowy gatunek obcych, owszem wymarły, ale jednak, a także resztki ich cywilizacji, na którą natrafia Ripley i jej nowi znajomi. To jest zresztą bardzo mocny wątek tej powieści. "Obcy: Wyjście z cienia" to już nie tylko ciągła ucieczka przed potworami z kosmosu, ale konkretna opowieść, która sprawia, że ciężko się od tej książki oderwać. Serio, ta nowa odsłona uniwersum to naprawdę miłe zaskoczenie i dowód na to, że jest coś jeszcze do opowiedzenia. Ale "Obcy: Wyjście z cienia", to nie tylko bardzo dobra fabuła, ale i zupełnie inne podejście do bohaterów. Już A.C. Crispin próbowała coś z nimi zrobić w "Obcym 4", ale wiadomo - wiązał ją scenariusz. W mojej ocenie bardzie słaby scenariusz. Tim Lebbon tego problemu nie miał i napisał kilka bardzo ciekawych postaci w tym... Ellen Ripley. Tak, Ripley nabiera tu charakteru. Nie jest już zimną heroską samotnie stającą w szranki z bestią z kosmosu. Lebbon dał jej wiele cech, czyniąc z niej babkę z krwi i kości, która boi się, tęskni, ma wyrzuty sumienia, która jest gotowa do poświęceń, i której serduszko zaczyna bić nieco szybciej, gdy w pobliżu przemyka kapitan Hooper (...) "Obcy. Wyjście z cienia" to przede wszystkim rozrywka na przyzwoitym poziomie i w takich kategoriach należy tę serię książek oceniać. Toteż oceniam i daję mocne siedem gwiazdek. Star Wars Into the Void by Tim Lebbon. This is the first of The Essential Legends Collection. I read this last year and really enjoyed it. It was fun reading about the precursors to the Jedi that we know from the movies and other books. It was a fun adventure and I really enjoyed the characters and learning about some of the early lore of the jedi and how they operated. The worldbuiling was interesting and would have loved to have learned even more of the past prior to this novel. I have been tempted to start collecting the Essentials Collection as the legends stories are some of my favourites in Star Wars universe and they do have some very nice covers.
