Spike Lee has never been afraid to make bold and entertaining films that address real world issues, and with ‘BlacKKKlansman’ he succeeds once again in highlighting the racial injustice that has plagued people all over the country for hundreds of years, in places and ways we never would have thought of. The story follows Ron Stallworth’s attempt to become the first black police officer in Colorado Springs. In doing so, Stallworth has to contend with racial discrimination in and outside the force, all while infiltrating and exposing the Ku Klux Klan. John David Washington delivers a breakout performance that is equal parts empowering and just cool as hell. Adam Driver delivers a great supporting performance and Topher Grace is surprisingly good as David Duke, and his resemblance is almost uncanny. The style and direction that you would expect from Lee also help elevate this from a film that could have been by the numbers if directed by someone else, to one that creates its own unique path and leaves you satisfied. All the actors playing Klan members also do a terrific job making you feel like they are actually members of the Ku Klux Klan. Overall, Spike Lee, and some terrific leading performances, as well as an interesting and inspired story make for one of the more entertaining historical films in recent memory. How have we honored Black History Month in my classroom? • As students get older Black history slowly eases out of the curriculum. I noticed this as a middle school and high school student and this was one of the driving factors for me picking up my minor in Africana studies when I was in college. One way we honor Black history and BHM in my classroom is by taking the first 10 minutes of class to discuss a figure or group of people who have either contributed to Black history and/or Black culture. I carried this tradition over from when I was student teaching last February. My mentor teacher did this in his classroom and I really loved and appreciated this segment. The students also loved and appreciated it too! I noticed while doing this in my own classroom that students really enjoy this time as well. • I like to select figures that are typically left out of typical BHM conversations. Every year students learn about MLK, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X — all essential figures — but, we leave out so many other amazing history and change makers! This month we’ve discussed Claudette Colvin, Jesse Owens, Motown, Henrietta Lacks, Maia Chaka, and today we concluded our segment with Ronald Stallworth, telling the insanely fascinating story of the Black police officer who infiltrated the KKK. • However, Black history isn’t just a month. Black history is American history and needs to be taught throughout the entire year. Even if it’s not explicitly embedded in your curriculum, take the time to acknowledge the contributions of Black Americans in each unit. Recently my seventh graders investigated the involvement of African Americans in the Revolutionary War and 8th graders examined the experience and significance of the Harlem Hellfighters. I unfortunately haven’t seen the movie adaptation of this yet, but if it follows the book, it has to be good. This is a fantastic story. Stallworth is very matter of fact in his account of the investigation and doesn’t seem to like the exaggerated tales that often get told about what’s mostly normal police work. His opinions of the men involved on both sides of the operation, civil rights, and race relations were well formulated and interesting, and I feel like I learned a lot both about Stallworth himself and the world as he saw it. He truly made David Duke and the Klan look like absolute asses by just doing his job, which I have a lot of respect for. The story is simple: Ron Stallworth, the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department, answers an ad in the newspaper and signs up to become a Klansman. His division organizes a sting operation where a white detective assumes his identity in public while he handles things behind the scenes in order to foil and humiliate the rising Klan population. This is one of those wild, too good to be true stories that’s actually true and I would listen to a season long podcast on just this. Normally I don’t love books about law enforcement because there tends to be so much ego and scrambling to take the most credit, but this feels like an honest, uncomplicated retelling of a wild story. I’d read any future books that Ron Stallworth puts out, because he lays out the facts in a clear, concise way that’s still imbued with personality. I highly recommend. In 2014, Stallworth published the true story of his undercover investigation of the KKK in his book, "Black Klansman". The book reached # 1 on the New York Times Best Seller's List and was later adapted into a film directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jordan Peele. The film, "BlacKkKlansman," debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2018, winning the Grand Prix Award, the second-most prestigious prize of the festival, and Ecumenical Jury Special Mention. The film went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards, 5 BAFTA Awards, 4 Golden Globes and 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Adapted Screenplay at both the Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards. Another week of this hell we call life but hey, at least I can recommend a good watch! BlacKkKlansman is now available to stream on Prime Video (Lionsgate+)! Based on a true story, Ron Stallworth, an African-American detective, embarks on a mission to infiltrate his town's chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist hate group. I watched this when it just came out but people might not know about this gem. Racism shouldn’t be so funny? But this was such a breath of fresh air from the typical race war movies we get. Whilst the racism was strong and loud, this gave a somewhat satisfying end that I didn’t end up reeling and hating white people. I’ve never had anything good to say about John David Washington which I admit is harsh but being the son of the greatest, puts that kinda pressure on you to act the hell out of your roles! He normally doesn’t but I really enjoyed him in BlackKklansman. He was actually humorous, relatable and enjoyable to watch. It suited him. He didn’t stick out of place or it didn’t feel unnatural. The cast itself was enjoyable, this was just an all round good movie for my week! Spike Lee, as always, gives his all when it comes to his well-crafted work and it showed in this one. I could see Jordan Peele’s touch which also made me happy! Whilst it might have been all laughs, I did appreciate the directors bringing it back to the serious matter at hand. How racism is still alive and well by KKK believers, showing real life clips of the injustice black people have received over the recent years. It’s culturally relevant. Teve de ultrapassar, claro, uma série de obstáculos, e isso por si só daria um filme, com certeza, mas Lee, faz da história uma comédia com algum drama, que pretende dar a conhecer como é que este polícia se conseguiu infiltrar no Klu Klux Klan, uma organização terrorista racista. Mas as grandes mentes alcançam sempre mais longe. Enquanto se desenrola o enredo, o realizador percorre parte da história do cinema americano, desde "E Tudo o Vento Levou" a "O Nascimento de Uma Nação" até à blaxpoitation. A iconografia cultural de que o cinema se alimentou e nos alimentou. O alcance do poder de alienação a que esta forma de arte nos remete é tão fascinante como assustador. Intrigué, il y répond et, à sa grande surprise, il est contacté deux semaines plus tard : le Ku Klux Klan est à la recherche de nouveaux membres pour monter sa section locale. Comment infiltrer le Ku Klux Klan quand on est un homme noir ? C'est l'exploit qu'accomplira Ron Stallworth sous couverture pendant neuf mois, aidé de son collègue Chuck, et qui dupera l'organisation tout entière. Avis : Cette histoire est vraie et je l'ai lu comme si c'était un thriller. Ce fut une opération d'infiltration menée avec brio qui a permis, pendant neuf mois, d'éviter des désagréments qui auraient pu déchaîner la violence (voire même plus avec l'imbrication d'agents du NORAD) !!! J'ai également très apprécié la partie documentaire qui a relaté l'histoire et les différentes activités du KKK et d'autres organisations. In honor of #juneteenth here is one of my FAVORITE EVER books about one of my HEROES: Ron Stallworth. He worked as a detective in Colorado, went under cover (via phone and with help from his detective partner for in person) in the burgeoning Ku Klux Klan. Ron Stallworth somehow maintained his cool in the face of extreme racism and prevented many KKK events which could have escalated to become tragic. To me, Juneteenth is an important reminder that the color of one's skin has NOTHING to do with their worth or capabilities. Ron Stallworth had every right to be angry. He had to work harder than anyone else to become a detective. He had malicious, racist comments directed at him way too often. But he chose to put the needs of the community above his own. Standing up to racism and remembering our history in its gruesome accuracy are important. How else can we truly give tribute to those who have suffered? "Infiltrado na Klan" ("Blackkklansman"), de 2018, é o mais aclamado dentre os filmes mais recentes de Spike Lee, ou seja, o melhor dele desde sua segunda obra-prima, "Malcolm X". A primeira obra-prima, claro, é "Faça a Coisa Certa" ("Do the Right Thing"). A história se torna ainda mais surpreendente e hilária se atentarmos que é verídica, ainda que, na adaptação, muita coisa tenha sido alterada. Spike Lee e seus parceiros não ganharam à toa o Oscar de roteiro adaptado. Considero um defeito da obra seu desnecessário epílogo, com as deploráveis cenas reais da manifestação "Unite the Right". Ali a arte foi sobrepujada pelo discurso político. Tudo o que ele podia discorrer sobre o assunto já constava da ficção. Movie Spotlight | BlacKKKlansman (2018) Another excellent and well made Spike Lee joint. This is one of those films that you can just put on anytime and thoroughly enjoy. Everything about this is top notch, from the directing to the Oscar winning screenplay and even the acting from every one in the cast. It tackles a pretty heavy issue but it's done the right way with class, style and good witty humor that's not overused.
