๐Book Review - The Professor @laurennossett is back with Marlitt Kaplin in The Professor. Pinot my kitten, was adamant she would be involved in the photo shoot ๐ . ๐My Review๐ . Marlitt Kaplin is back.... she is a research officer and the book is set at the University of Georgia as was Lauren's previous book - The Resemblance. Having the back story and insight of Marlitt's character and why she left the police force from the first book is of value......this book can still be read as a "Stand alone" ๐ Marlitt is asked to help out a colleague of her mothers at the University of Georgia. The colleague - Verena Sobek a Professor is taken in for questioning by the police when one of her students is found dead in his apartment. Rumours are circling, the professor was romantically involved with the student. As the investigation ensures, Verena is suspended from work, the media is quick to exploit the scandal. ๐ As a former detective, Marlitt agrees to investigate, get the answers on what happened to Ethan and if any what was Verenas involvement. I loved the character development @liznugentwriter how is this the first book Ive read of yours? โ the writing is superb. ๐ธ A lot of smoke and mirrors in this oneโฆ. Set in idyllic Dublin we have well respected judge, his wife Lydia and their son Laurence. Buried in their garden is the body of Angie, a carefully kept hidden secret for many years. One day Karen, Annieโs younger sister appears sheโs never given up finding her sister. ๐ธ I flew through this book in one dayโฆ my first read of 2024 and what a cracker! The peek into Lydia and her sons relationship had me on the edge of my seat. Full of tension, suspense and so many NO, WHAT THE moments with an ending that was just gold.... I read the ending a couple of times itโs so good! ๐ธ I ate this one up so fast, Im now on the hunt for more books from Liz. I also liked that it was novella length. Definitely a must read esp in October! Glad I ended off my Halloween with this one so maybe next time you should too ๐ p.s. One thing I disliked: SPOILER ALERT โ ๏ธ โข โข โข โข โข them getting abruptly married for the ghosts sake while we didn't get much of their relationship together as a couple was silly becoz I would have liked them to have built or shown more of their couple sides be4 the author introduced this plot of them needing to get hitched for the ghosts to find peace. โJust when you think youโve seen the worst human beings have to offer, you find out youโre wrongโ #qotd : have you read any Stephen Kingโs books? The master of horror, Stephen King is back with his latest novel, Holly, featuring his fan-favorite character, Holly Gibney (who appeared as a side character in the Bill Hodges trilogy, The Outsider, and If It Bleeds). Holly opens with the kidnapping of Jorge Castro (a creative writing teacher at a university) by his own elderly colleagues (Professor Emily Harris from the English Department and her husband, Professor Rodney Harris from the Life Science Department) in 2012. He was caged in the basement of both of the Professors' Victorian house and was forced to eat a raw calfโs liver. The story then switched to the year 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic when Holly was attending her mother's funeral via Zoom (her mother was an anti-vaxer and died of COVID-19). Holly encountered a client's (Penny Dahl) engagement to investigate the disappearance of her missing daughter, Bonnie Dahl. Holly had to take on the case on her own as her partner from Finders Keepers Agency, Pete Huntley, was down with COVID-19. In the midst of her investigation, Holly revealed other disappearances in the neighborhood which were all connected to each other. I have to stop here vis-a-vis the summary as it may spoil the story. But I am so in love with Holly Gibney here. King has crafted her background story (focusing on Holly's complicated relationship with her mother and her family) and created a multilayered and complex character. King worked his magic with this novel i.e. his impeccable skills in layering the plot for a thriller and crafting the horrific/gut-wrenching atmosphere, especially the gruesome scenes at the end of the story which not only give me chills but reveal the disgusting, dangerous, and dark human nature. The inspirational @__sophiareads invited me to show my current read and drink ๐๐งก I'm just about to finish the perfect Spooktober read, namely John Dickson Carr's "The Burning Court" ๐ It really is spooky, and the wonderfully enigmatic ending made this crime/ghost/horror novel rather controversial in its time ๐ป (it was published in 1937). Pictured are both my English and Norwegian editions of this favourite. The Seven and ยฝ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton Have you ever finished a book and subsequently wanted to crawl into the mind of the author just to see how it works? This book was unlike anything I have ever read before, and I had absolutely no idea how it was going to come together in the end. As you can probably guess from the title, Evelyn Hardcastle is going to die. A lot. Our protagonist awakens with no idea who he is, how he came to be in a dark forest, why he has a deep feeling of fear, or why the only memory he has is a singular personโs name. Every time he falls asleep, he wakes up in a different body and repeats the same day from a different point of view. The only way out of this cycle is to solve the mystery of Evelynโs murder. This novel felt like a mixture of the game of Clue, a twisted Groundhog Day, and an absolutely Freaky Friday situation, heavy on the freaky (mysterious freaky, not creepy freakyโฆI canโt handle creepy books). There was no way to predict the ending of this book, and it was, at times, hard to keep all of the characters in Blackheath Manor straight. My only complaint would be that the book felt too long, and it could have been wrapped up a little more quickly. Question: Have you read this one? OR Do you have any book recommendations that felt like the game of Clue?
All Mattie knows is life on an isolated mountain with her husband William. He is much older than her and what he says goes. One day while out walking Mattie discovers a mutilated fox and then the strange cries start to echo through the mountain. Maybe Mattie and William are not alone after all. I have very mixed feelings about this book. At the start I took a while to get into and I even considered DNFing but I carried on. In amongst the descriptive writing I had to wade through to get to the crux of the story. I'm glad I did keep going as once I got into it there was a whole different story from what I was expecting. The cover and even the title made me think that I was in for a shocking modern take on a monster story. There is a mysterious monster looming at all times but it is in the periphery and not the main focus of the story. Mattie's storyline is one I am usually drawn to immediately but for some reason or other this time it fell short for me. I think perhaps it was because there was not enough back story in either Mattie's past, future or present for me. I did feel for her and looked forward to finding out more about her but it wasn't quite enough. I liked this book but didn't love it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it fully committed to one thing or the other as it became muddled in the end. Also there were so many unanswered questions left hanging. Mild creepiness. โก๏ธ Swipe for synopsis. ๐ Review: When I was in middle school, I was obsessed with books where people, especially kids, went off into the wilderness alone and survived. My Side of the Mountain and Robinson Crusoe were favorites. This book gave me the same vibe. As a kid I would have loved the quest the three main characters go on as they travel alone by bus, boat, and on foot. (Of course as a mom, I now have a very different perspective. Lol!) Childhood me would not have enjoyed the ghost story, however. Back then I wanted every novel to be completely rational. But I now can appreciate a good ghost story! I only wish it had been creepier! Although perhaps that would have been too much for middle grade. ๐กWelcome to the scariest place on Earth...๐ข Yikes! What a fright fest Devil Land seems to be! This new series from Joshua Williamson sees us exploring the dark and dirty skeletons in the cloest of a horror theme park. The mascots and rides are just as horrific as you'd expect at a place called Devil Land, and the mystery around the place is just as large as the intrigue surrounding it's founder - Arthur Dante. I'm really looking forward to seeing where some of these mysteries take us, as well as what is going to happen with some of the main characters in Samhain and Halloween Dante, the children of Arthur. I've never actually read a Joshua Williamson book but I like what I've read so far. He's also joined by his artist from Birthright, Andrei Bressan, with some terrific art that brings out the spooky vibes and creepy look to the park and mascots. I was lucky enough to get through this spooky read with Remi on my lap too! hi everyone!! hereโs a short review for the ex hex by erin sterling (swipe for summary)๐งโโ๏ธ๐ช. i see this book a lot during the month leading up to october both last year and this year. it was on my tbr last year but i never got the chance to read it so i thought it would be a perfect book to start with. it has the cozy, small town halloween vibes with second chance romance, magic gone wrong. i think if youโre looking for a fun, october witchy romance i would recommend this one. i liked it, but at times it felt like it dragged out. i thought there would be more mystery surrounding the curse, to me it felt like it was โinterruptedโ by the romance in the second half. i wish we got more background or more development if rhys & vivโs relationship since it felt all physical to me, and inner dialogue of attractiveness & the way the other made them feel (this inner dialogue also made me feel like it sound include miscommunication trope). rate/5: ๐๐๐๐ (4/5) - cozy witchy mystery - third person, dual pov - halloween hallmark rom-com special - second chance romance - small town romance - witchy college

BOOK REVIEW Spoiler Adjacent @s.l.cokeley_writes_books absolutely killed it with this sequel. I devoured this from the second I started it and I didnโt want it to end! I loved the further development not just in Kimberly and Aaronโs relationship, but in her relationship with each of his brothers and even her friendship with Chelsea. I loved the story, the pacing was spot on, the characters, somehow I loved them even more than I did in the first book. Iโve been wanting to read One Dark Window for over a year but wanted to do the whole duology, so I WAITED! With self-restraint! Like some kind of adult person with impulse control! It was weird. But Iโm glad I did because that was perfectly satisfying and perfectly #spooktober atmospheric. This series very much fits right into my imaginary shelf of dark gothic fantasy Best Ofs with the likes of: For the Wolf, Uprooted, House of Salt and Sorrows, etc. It actually manages to blend the nature-as-dark-antagonist trope I love WITH medieval haunted castle, so therefore walks a fine line between dark cottagecore and gothic fantasy at the perfect blend of flavors. If you like Juliet Marillier, Naomi Novik, Hannah Whitten, Katherine Arden, etc, Gillig should definitely be on your list. I personally slightly preferred the first book to the second only because I felt like the characters I wanted more of after book 1 were the characters I got the least of in book 2. Gillig turns the side cast into main characters in the sequel for very good reason and to wonderful effect, but I missed our protagonist from book 1 in particular. That said, possibly my favorite thing in these books is the monster. We get a fully fleshed out life story from our ancient malevolent villain in a way I really REALLY enjoyed. I especially enjoyed that he didnโt become your stereotypically ancient force of power love interestโ not that I donโt like the Bad Zaddy trope in fantasyโ I do. But this made for a nice change and a less predictable plot. Overall this felt like a breath of fresh air in this sub-genre of fantasy. It is not YA, nor is it smut-centered. And I just feel saturated on that front ATM, so 10/10 for me on this. Dag 21 van #spooktoberbookstagram alweer...Blood Red Stack โค๏ธ๐ฉธ Bloedrode boeken heb ik gelukkig genoeg,stapelen was dus geen enkel probleem. Ik heb dus voor boeken gekozen die een beetje bij de categorie spooktober passen. De onderste drie heb ik nog niet gelezen, maar ik heb wel een vermoeden dat ik die wel eens leuk kan gaan vinden. Ik heb alleen zo ongelooflijk weinig headspace om te lezen tegenwoordig. Als ik dan kijk wat ik tot twee รก drie jaar geleden las.... oef๐ Toen las ik rustig 20 boeken per maand als het niet meer was. Maar ja dat was toen, nu ben ik blij als ik aan het einde van het jaar 50 boeken heb gehaald. En daar zit ik ook verder niet mee. Want ik heb wel gemerkt als ik er druk op zet, dat ik dan helemaal geen zin meer heb om te lezen. Dus wat ik lees is mooi meegenomen, en de rest gaat gewoon mee naar volgend jaar. We have 3 foster girls in the past who grew up together at Wild Meadows farm under the abusive foster mother Miss Fairchild. The 3 girls are bonded like sisters after all they endured under Miss Fairchild, her mood swings, controlling nature and abusive neglectful behaviours. ๐ The present 25 years on - The girls are grown up (Jessica (Suffers OCD), Alicia (Now a social worker) and Norah (has problems managing anger). They have been contacted by a detective, human remains have been found under the foster home, they suspect the remains are from around the time they were all living there...... They go back to the house to assist the police with their investigation. ๐ We take a trip down memory lane with the sisters to uncover what happened back them. The backstory of how the girls came to the foster house, the mistreatment, I mean how was this woman able to be a foster carer. ๐ The story, whilst interesting did become a bit repetitive I was waiting for the punishment for the crimes as the story line was heavy I was hoping for a result. ๐ I enjoyed this book itโs a 3.5 starsโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ๐ซ it just didn't reach bar I have seen before from this writer. ๐ I'd like to thank @macmillanaus for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. . ๐Whatโs your fav Sally Hepworth book? The Inmate by Freida McFadden Review: So, yesterday I read the Inmate and would have read it all in one sitting but had to go to work for a bit and had to finish it last night instead and man! Was it good! I was completely sucked in from the very first page ready to know more. I think the plot was amazing.
