🕳️ Now, you're in the sunken place 🕳️ 🗓️ Day 25 #oldschoolapril24 #sicksadapril Beanie babies - Collection There aren't any beanie babies here, but there are collections. Swipe to see the few R.L. Stines I currently own. I'm always on the lookout for the low low prices. Get out is a masterpiece. Just that one movie made me a Jordan Peele superfan. And I really enjoyed Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror edited by the man himself. Admittedly, I did not love every single story. I mean, how often does that happen with anthologies? But, I was never bored, and I thought each one was unique and interesting. There are 19 stories in the collection. I loved eight of them and really liked seven. The others were good, but might have gone over my head a little. Here are my favorites: 💫 The Other One by Violet Allen - Unhinged! 💫 Pressure by Ezra Claytan Daniels - toxic family members 💫 Dark Home by Nnedi Okorafor - grief, traditions and scary AI 💫 Flicker by L. D. Lewis - had me on edge from start to finish 💫 The Norwood Trouble by Maurice Broaddus - cosmic horror meets evil white men 💫 A Bird Sings by the Etching Tree by Nicole D. Sconiers - angry girl ghosts 💫 The Aesthete by Justin C. Key - scifi, dystopian, and AMAZING. Last year I read his own short story collection, The World Wasn’t Ready For You. I loved every story. HIGHLY recommend. 💫 Origin Story by Tochi Onyebuchi - I don’t even know how to explain this one. I probably didn’t completely understand it. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it. It was one of the most surreal experiences I’ve ever had while reading. I took my time with this book. Sometimes I waited days between stories. And that is what I recommend if you want to read it. If you're reading it just because Jordan Peele’s name is on it, it may not be what you're expecting. But I think it's important to remember that one person's everyday life experience may be another person's nightmare. And sometimes the scariest places aren't filled with screams, but no sound at all. QOTD: Do you collect used paperbacks? Where do you find them? Or, what was the last movie you watched?

Hi everyone!😄 It's been a while! I hope the past couple of months have been treating you well! I don't know about you but I'm so glad spring is here—even if the weather hasn't fully realized it yet😝 How is your reading year going? It's been a slower reading year for me compared to previous years, but still a good one!😊 March was particularly good as I had back to back 5-star reads, a rare occurrence for me! Hoping to finish a couple more before April is over! Earlier this month I had a birthday and, as is tradition, I spent some of my birthday money on some new books! I wanted to share this little stack of horror and mystery! Pictured: • Three Act Tragedy by Agatha Christie • Murder on the Mews by Agatha Christie • Monstrilio by Gerarado Sámano Córdova • What Feasts at Night by T. Nnedimma Nkemdili “Nnedi” Okorafor is a Nigerian-American writer who coined the term “Africanfuturism.” Africanfuturism is a cultural movement encompassing an artistic aesthetic, philosophy, and history with the African people and culture at its center. It explores themes of African culture using speculative fiction and technoculture to envision Black futures and express Black identity, point of view, and history through creative works and activism. It is commonly associated with speculative fiction genres (literature, film, television, music, etc.) like sci-fi, fantasy, and magical realism. It brings together imagination, technology, and the idea of the future, focusing on African people and culture. This term defined by Okorafor differs from “Afrofuturism,” which focuses solely on diasporic narratives. Nnedi Okorafor bases her works on African myths and legends. Her writing has further developed the concepts of Africanfuturism (mostly sci-fi) and Africanjujuism (mostly fantasy), though she is not solely tied to those genres. Her most well-known works include the “Binti Series,” “Lagoon,” “Who Fears Death,” and “Zahrah the Windseeker.” She has received awards such as the Nebula Award, Hugo Award, Eisner Award, and World Fantasy Award. #NnediOkorafor #Okorafor #africanfuturism #afrofuturism #scifi #sciencefiction #fantasy #future #culture #literature #speculativefiction

Book 6 Lagoon Nnedi Okorafor 292 pages . ⭐️⭐️ Not really one of my favorites unfortunately. This was the final book for my Queer Literature class, but it was both sci-fi and fantasy, the genres I am not a huge fan of. The style of writing wasn’t my favorite either, also making it difficult to focus. There were some positives with this book, it was not a complete flop, just not my cup of tea. <3 . . . . . #book #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookstagram #read #readmorebooks #reading #readersgonnaread #reader #lagoon #nnediokorafor #illiterate #blonde

🥰 #books #bookstagram #booktok #nnediokorafor #ya #yabooks #medium #lecoledesloisirs #bookrecommendations #bookaddict #booklover #bookblogger #bookphotography #sf #sciencefiction #fantasy

* Little Fatima forgets her names as a result of a tragedy and becomes Sankofa, "Death's adopted daughter", whose reputation precedes her wherever she goes in the near-future Ghana. She has the ability to kill with the power of her thoughts, but how will she use that ability? A very enjoyable afrofuturist coming-of-age story that also has elements of fantasy, mythology and symbolism. Nnedi Okorafor has a brilliant ability to include social commentary and criticism between the lines, and I can certainly imagine myself reading more of her novels and novellas. I did not even realise how much I needed this story of empowerment! Adjoa Andoh did a brilliant job bringing depth to this story with her reading. #nnediokorafor #remotecontrol #afrofuturism #scifi #africanliterature #americanliterature #africanamericanliterature #hugoawardwinner #nebulaawardwinner #solarpunk

I am back from my epic birthday trip to the Al Wadi Desert about an hour outside of Dubai. I have too many photos…so here are a bunch of random ones. This was a trip that my good friend and creative/writing partner Wanuri Kahiu (check out her films Rafiki and Pumzi) pushed me for months to schedule and I’m so glad she kept at it. I’m not good at taking breaks. I have been to the UAE many times now. However, this was my first time going where it wasn’t for business. I love the desert; it is my place of rest, joy and where I can tap into my connection to the planet. I hadn’t seen Wanuri since our week at Sony Animation in March 2020. It was so good to see and spend the days with her. Because this was for my birthday, it was tailored to my interests- Owls, other raptors, oryxes (aka the original unicorns, 😁), plenty of time in the desert, a super posh hotel room (I don’t do rustic, lol), very very few people, camels, cool insects, a gym, good food, quiet. Lovely. 😊 #nnediokorafor

reading update 🍄 🎮 tomorrow x3 has been such a fun read this time. gabrielle zevin describes the game development process in a muchh more interesting way that i would’ve ever imagined it being. and these characters!!! i am sadie and she is me. very quickly falling in love with her, but sam is also so so lovely 🥲🥲 some of my only memories the first time reading this was resonating DEEPLY with sam whenever he was complaining about his foot and how he described his relationship with his body because i also had a broken foot at the time ☺️☺️ last thing, its embarrassing how long it took to realize the waves on the cover is meant to resemble the waves the very notable waves in their game… 🪐 im also around halfway finished with this short afro-futurist sci-fi, binti! its the first of a trilogy and only has 90 pages, yay. i don’t read many sci-fi books but im LOVING this. it’s quite slow paced which i usually dislike but okorafor’s writing and world building has made it such an easy page turner. really excited to finish it soon and read the other two! #bookstagram #booklover #bookblogger #tomorrowtomorrowtomorrow #gabriellezevin #binti #nnediokorafor

Do you like short story collections/anthologies? I find they are very hit and miss for me, I normally only end up really enjoying a handful of the stories. I think the only time it has been different is when the collection is by just one author like, The Bone Key by Sarah Monette and The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo. On the whole I really enjoyed this collection (I only disliked 2 or 3 stories which is a success for me) the below were definitely my favourites: 💀Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse - I'd read a full length novel or story collection of this sibling duo hunting ghosts and monsters. 💀Invasion of the Baby Snatchers by Lesley Nneka Arimah - I loved the mc's personality/narration. 💀The Rider by Tananarive Due - this author is so good at making me feel dread from the offset. 💀The Norwood Trouble by Maurice Broaddus - one that could have been longer. 💀Hide & Seek by P. Djeli Clark - knew I'd like it from just that title. #outtherescreaming #jordanpeele #nkjemisin #rebeccaroanhorse #cadwellturnbull #lesleynnekaarimah #violetallen #erineadams #tananarivedue #justinckey #ezraclaytandaniels #nnediokorafor #ldlewis #nalohopkinson #mauricebroaddus #rionamilcarscott #nicoledsconiers #chesyaburke #terencetaylor #pdjeliclark #tochionyebuchi #horrorfiction #blackauthors

I started Nnedi Okorafor's "Who Fears Death" yesterday! The protagonist, Onye, immediately jumps from the pages. She's labelled as an "Ewu" (a child of rape shunned by her community); despite this, she has a resilient spirit. I love her already. And it's always a blast to pick up a new genre. This novel is my introduction to Africanfuturism! (I'm also incredibly curious about the HBO adaptation. Fingers crossed that it moves out of early development soon!) ❤️📚 #whofearsdeath #nnediokorafor

Binti, Home ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nothing can compare to the Binti books! They are graphic, moving and so fascinating! Binti has spent a year at Oomza University and there is a shaky peace between the ethnic groups. Binti and Okwu have both had to undergo therapy for the traumatic things that happened on the trip there, but now they will set out on a trip again with the same ship. They are going home to Binti's planet 🌌 However, the knowledge and experiences Binti brings home are not welcomed, she has grown out of her simple culture. When Binti and Okwu land, news spreads of the first Medusa to set foot on Earth and the first Himba to leave Earth 🌍 In this book Binti discovers more about her history and herself, she learns about who she is and how far her abilities extend. I like how everything is alive in the book, the ships and all things are alive! And it's interesting how the characters all have very specific looks that can't be compared to any other book. It's a very unique book series! It’s my milestone birthday. 😃🎂 The first thing I did today was go out to my private pool while listening to Nas’ “Fever” (I’m so feeling that song today). I spotted another scarab beetle (the insect of life who is one of the only insects to navigate their world by the stars) struggling in the water. I fished it out. ¿Habéis leído a Nnedi Okorafor? ¿Cuál es vuestra obra favorita?📚 📷Fotografía: Yves Picq

Ploughed through a bunch of Amazon original short stories whilst I was sick! Nothing like a bit of fake productivity to make you feel less useless when you’re basically a big ball of phlegm and snot 😉 Here are some short write-ups. Pretty sure you can read all of these for free if you have a Kindle. I’m in the United Arab Emirates to celebrate my milestone birthday on April 8 (plus, I get an eclipse, 😊). I had one goal yesterday: To get close to an owl. Mission accomplished with great glee. I got close to several, 😃. The one I got to carry was an Eurasian Eagle-Owl and she was a light as I expected, 🦉 😍. And yes, she eventually swallowed that piece of meat, 😁.

#brujaakata #guerreraakata #mujerakata #nnediokorafor #nocturnaediciones

Binti ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Binti is SO COOL! Wow! I am completely in awe of Binti! Binti starts the transport and sets off, away from her family and away from her culture. She leaves to study at the most prestigious university in the entire galaxy... But leaving means going against her family, going alone into space, and being the first and only Himba to leave and who gets to study at Oomza University. But Binti's trip to Oomza University turns out to be anything but what she imagined, what would be an opportunity to share knowledge and meet other individuals instead becomes a fight for survival and she becomes entangled in an old feud. What is reading like for you? For me, I don’t really have much visualization while reading. Its more just general vibes and feelings that the characters and settings give off. This book though was particularly vivid for me. Binti was on my TBR for ages so I was so excited to finally get my hands on it! It is so short, but still the world building is so clear and full, and the main character has an interesting and logical arc. The story is based on the challenges of prejudice, tradition, identity and violence the main character faces, and the unexpected friendship made along the way. I loved the little bits of Namibian and Himba culture I learned too. This was my first Nnedi Okorafor book, but I can definitely see her becoming a favorite! Can’t wait to read more. #bookreview #nnediokorafor #binti #bookreccommendation #bookrec #bookstagram #queerbookstagrammer #sciencefictionbookrec #scifibookrec #novella #scifinovella #afrofuturism

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 A super solid sci-fi novella. I listened to the audio and really enjoyed the narration. I don't really have a lot to say, except I wish it had been longer! One of those books where I just start really getting invested in the world and then it's over. I recommend it to fans of sci-fi and afrofuturism, and to anyone who wants a well-narrated short audiobook. I listened to this in one day.

‘Then yards into the water, within the twinkling green stars, I saw a swirling galaxy. Okwu’s silhouette surrounded by swirling twinkling baby snails. “What?” I whispered. Then Okwu’s dome emerged; Okwu was adeptly swimming, half-submerged. It came toward me, but stopped when the water got too shallow for it to stay half-submerged. “My ancestors are dancing,” Okwu said in Otjihimba, its voice wavering with more emotion than I’d ever heard Okwu convey. Then Okwu swam back into the water. For the next thirty minutes, it danced with the snails. (…) As I sat there, watching Okwu dance with its god, I thought about how strange it was that for me to swim in water was taboo and for Okwu such a taboo was itself a taboo. I remember thinking, The gods are many things.’ — Binti: Home by Nnedi Okorafor Long quote, short caption? Yeah. I’m excited for the release of this book, (August 2024, @dawbooks). It’s a story that has given me dreams and nightmares. I’ve wanted to write it for many years. I’ve been letting it gather. The SHE WHO KNOWS novella series is the story of Onyesonwu’s mother in WHO FEARS DEATH. In the first novella, she is a teen. The second novella, which I’ve already written, she’s well over 40 and Onyesonwu has already done what she does. I know the story of the 3rd novella, but I’m letting it breathe before I write it. There are masquerades, the story takes place in the far future, there are physical books and they are revered, old portable supercomputers, capture stations that run on nuclear energy and collect water from the sky, and at the forefront are the stories of black people (though there is one strange worldly white man…we’ve see him before) and the desert. The terms “prequel” and “sequel”, “YA” are all too limiting to describe this trilogy, as are other category labels. None of that is important anyway. #nnediokorafor #nnedi #nnedimmankemdiliokorafor #nnedimma #shewhoknows #whofearsdeath

The rough edges of this books shows how many times I've read it😂 This was my comfort book back in secondary school, I'd get back from school and I'd pick it up to eat or even fall asleep. (Reading a book or watching a movie while eating is a comforting activity for me to do) Reading a fantasy genre written by an African author was a really beautiful experience for me. 2024 book review book number 21 out of 80 is: "Benti". by: Nnedi Okorafor My 2 cents: I put off reading this book for a year fun fact I shouldn't have. I really liked this story it was super quick, and I can't wait to read the others in the trilogy. I love Benti. She is willing to defy her people for the pursuit of knowledge and becomes a remarkable heroine in the process. I like the writing style of the author. The flow is so smooth. This was a 5-star 🌟 read for me, and I recommend this book 📖. Book blurp: Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Numeric review: Here's my take using CPEAPLE 10 Point system ☆ Characters: 9.5 ☆Plot: 9 ☆Enjoyment: 9.5 ☆Atmosphere/Setting: 9 ☆Pacing: 8.5 ☆Logic: 7.5 ☆Ending: 10 Total: 63/7=9 #NnediOkorafor #Benti #bookstagram #igbooks #kindlebooks #bookreview #bookgenre #girlswhoread #booklovers #2024bookgoals #igread #bookreader #booklover #kindleunlimited #52weekbookchallenge #eReader #kindlepaperwhite #readingchallenge #bookrecommendations #readersofinstagram #libby #blackauthors #blackfemaleauthors #tfbwlreadingchallenge2024 #tfbwlreadingchallenge #diversereads #blackbookstagram #bipocbooks #biopcbookstagram #audiobook

I really enjoyed the setting of Noor, that being an Africanfuturist Nigeria. The way Nigeria became a global superpower in this book is so interesting to me despite it really only being briefly explored in an early chapter. It's a setting that I would've liked to explore more, which is my main criticism of the book. The story isn't bad, but it doesn't do justice to the world it takes place in. Noor is a comparatively short book, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I see its shortness as a missed opportunity to really dig into its setting and explore the day to day life. The plot moves way too quickly for you to get a good sense of what life is like in this futuristic and prosperous Nigeria. #brodegoreads #noor #nnediokorafor #africa #nigeria #africanfuturist #blackpanther #wakanda #scifi #sciencefiction #fiction #books #bookreview #bookstagram #reading #booklover #bookworm #bookish #book #bibliophile #bookstagrammer #bookblogger #booknerd #booksofinstagram #bookaholic #bookaddict

Binti: The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor #yascifi This part of the story starts a year after Binti gets to Uni that her family, friends and whole community did not want her to go to in the first place. And now she is coming home for her first visit. She didn't think it would be smooth. She only thought her family would have issues. But this was bigger than she expected bc she came home with her friend who is a Meduse, Okwu. How big of an issue will their visit be? Apparently, a VERY big one. You will get sad and angry at certain points but this book will redeem itself. I took off 1/2⭐ bc I felt it ended just a little abruptly. I would have loved an epilogue. #bintitrilogy #thenightmasquerade #nnediokorafor @nnediokorafor #scifi #ya #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendation #booknerdsbookreview

. . . . . . . . . #bookstagram #books #bookstagramencatalà #cites #citas #nnediokorafor #elreductecatala #llibres #libros #recomanacionsliteràries

Finished Shadow Speaker and realized it matched my quilt! For me this was between Who Fears Death and the Binti trilogy in terms of enjoyment, with Binti being the highest rating. I think this was a little young on the YA spectrum for me and that lessened my enjoyment. I felt talked down to a bit in terms of narrative style. That being said there are talking animals and super human powers so 3.75⭐️
