Look at this beautiful Centipede Press edition of The Jonah by James Herbert. They can still be had for about $40 from Ziesings if anyone is tempted—a very nice price. It’s an excellent production—love that cover art by Ben Baldwin, just enough of a nod to the original for a vintage freak like me. Quite possibly my all time favourite ghost story on film. Based on the novel by James Herbert (which I've also read) and starring Aidan Quinn, Kate Beckinsale and Anthony Andrews. Quinn plays David Ash, a parapsychologist who sets out to disprove ghosts, hauntings and the supernatural. When he is invited to the stately home of Edbrook, David is plunged into a paranormal mystery that will make him question everything he has believed to be nothing more than stories. This is one I can't recommend enough for a solid ghost story. What is even better is that this book was just one of 13 books I got free from a Facebook Pong group! It’s a 633 page book and it was really exciting for me to get into a book that I’m looking forward to read more of, where I’m at work wondering what is going to happen in the next chapter. It’s a good old spooky story with twists and turns that keep you up at night saying to yourself “just one more chapter.” This is a later James Herbert book and you can see he has really honed his atmospheric writing. There are times where I actually felt as though I was in the story and that’s what I love about Herbert. The writing is powerful and the story can be disturbing in places - making you feel uncomfortable but unable to stop reading. Chiller è un gioco arcade con armi leggere pubblicato nel 1986 da Exidy. Nel gioco, il giocatore assume il ruolo di un torturatore invisibile che deve mutilare e uccidere personaggi non giocanti trattenuti in una varietà di ambientazioni sotterranee. Pochi NPC nel gioco sono in grado di reagire, e l'elemento di sfida sta nella velocità con cui il giocatore può far morire ciascuna delle vittime. Aliens: The Computer Game è un videogioco del 1986 sviluppato da Software Studios e pubblicato da Electric Dreams Software inizialmente per Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 e ZX Spectrum. Moon by James Herbert 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 Moon was a decent supernatural novel. Herbert is a very skilled writer the way he can describe landscapes, characters and moods is a real talent he is very poetic especially in this novel. The plot whilst it was enjoyable just didnt grab me. I liked Childes a man with psychic abilities and the strained relationship with his girlfriends father was well written but I think I'm just not a massive fan of slow burn supernatural beings. The ending was rushed to me but overall I'm happy I read it. I did enjoy this it just didnt blow me away as one of Herbert's better works. Finished my sixth book of the year. I love alternative history stories, I often always wonder what could have happened if the other side had won and what implications would have occurred. Eugene Nathaniel Hoke is an American pilot, part of the Eagle squadron who volunteered to fight for the allies in World War II before the Americans officially entered the conflict. But in this alternative history, Adolf Hitler, just before his defeat, unleashes a biological weapon using V-2 rockets that wipes out most of the human race. Hoke is stranded in a dystopian London, mainly a loner apart from a dog, Cagney. Whilst being gang of diseased and terminal Blackshirts, afflicted with the 'Slow Death', who attempt to capture him to use his blood to save their leader, Lord Hubble, via a blood transfusion. Hoke joins a group of other survivors, Cassie, a poor Cockney girl, Muriel, a rich girl, Albert Potter, an air raid warden and Stern, a German navigator who had escaped from a POW camp in Wales. All of whom are on the run. For Herbert it’s a return to a post-apocalyptic setting that’s reminiscent of 'Domain' (even the dreaded rats make an appearance). As well as the subject of neo-nazism which was first explored in 'The Spear'. Now this is the Herbert I love, piles of blood-soaked action in a non-stop bleak action setting. The alternative World War II history of ‘48 isn’t unique. 🐀 James Herbert - Lair Review: Sometimes various members of the Laymon bookclub suggest alternative books to read and I immediately jumped the chance when 'Lair' was chosen as last year I read 'The Rats' and coincidentally reviewed exactly a year ago today by me! Following the Rat destruction in London, the city has returned to a somewhat normality. Except strange sightings have been spotted in nearby Epping Forest by various citizens involving long tails and black fur. Rat-catcher Lucas Pender knows these aren't regular pest rats and once they have tasted human flesh, the real nightmare starts again... What I loved about this novel was it feels like the ideal sequel to a great Horror classic, I like the fact it features different characters to the first book and different setting though still retaining the south-east of England location. With the characters in this story, they give off such realism that British people may relate to folk such as these in day to day life, a sense of arrogance, egoistical traits and decisiveness. The true gem of the story obviously are the Rats themselves, especially the short phrases that appear throughout of their whereabouts and progression. The gore is featured heavily more and more as the novel unfolds and I had goosebumps reading the majority. Unfortunately I did like the first book slightly better but this may be due to not expecting as much shock this time round and I'm sure it will happen again with the third novel 'Domain' which I will get to in future! But I really loved this book and I will highly recommend it if you enjoyed 'The Rats' and want more vermin blood filled action! Rating: 9/10 • • • • 🐀 • • • •

If we talk about horror, we have to mention James Herbert! This is one of his best books. And he makes it so easy to disbelieve in your first thoughts while reading it. Ash is our main character here. he is skeptic as hell about ghosts and such things from the beyond... He works for a paranormal investigation institute but his job is to reveal fake mediums and "charlatons"... He has built a famous career on that and so there's this family now, who confirms that their house is haunted for sure and they want his help either proving it is or it isn't. The rest of the story will leave a chill down your spine, while his visit there will have you asking some questions... All I can say is... 🐉April Wrap-Up🐉 🐉 It feels good to get back on track with my reading, and to make a little dent in the books I’ve been hoarding. I don’t have the room to keep books I’m not collecting, so I’m going to have to start doing a slow purge of things. 🐉 My favourite book of the month was without a doubt False Memory by Dean Koontz, although all the Koontz books I read were great, there was just the complexity and plot twists of False Memory that captivated me. My least favourite book was probably The Fog, but it was still a good read! 🐉 I have a lot of books by Guy N. Smith that I picked up from somewhere that I’d like to get through in May, short paperbacks with crazy stories I’m imagining from their cover art. The Rats by James Herbert But delayed on what I've been reading. Shock. But this book is one of the best horrors I've read. The description of the rats and the horror they leave in their wake is absolutely disgusting...but in a good way 😂 Herbert's writing is great at balancing the gore with the witty humour that the main character brings to the story, which gives you a bigger punch with every rat attack as it has such a start contrast. The Rats! Evil large sized rats with a hunger for human flesh! This is the first book he wrote and its so gripping within the first few pages. The rat attacks happen right away and he doesn't spare any details. So gross. The first time I read this I did it in one sitting. I literally couldn't put it down. I've read this book three times now and it still creeps me out. There are two other books that he wrote after this, Lair and Domain, that continue on the story of attacking rats. I haven't read them and I don't know if I really want to. 🤣 I use to love rats and think they were so cute. I hate stickers on the covers of books, and as hard as I’ve tried to remove this one, I can’t fully take it off without taking pieces of the cover with it. There was a second sticker that came off so much easier, it gave me hope for the red one, but no dice. 🐉 3.5/5⭐️ - The government created a neurotoxin they couldn’t control, so they end up burying it in the ground. Years later an earthquake strikes and the canister holding the deadly concoction is freed and starts to travel, it grows as it feeds on carcinogens in the air and quickly starts effecting people, turning them violent and murderous. I was not prepared for the scenes that take place in this book, but what a bizarre read. New booooooooks! I went into a charity shop yesterday and managed to find a nice copy of Micro but all the books were 2 for £1. I took Micro to the till and she told me about the deal, there was nothing else I wanted so I said I'm happy to pay £1 for one book but the woman wasn't having any of that! So I picked up Haunted (which I already have). That will go in a little library. I hope the previous owner got their bread and biscuits though. The Thief, Blue Gold and Death Train I found in a little free library I passed while I was at work today. I have been looking to read some of Paul’s work for a while now and when this title was announced, I quickly pre-ordered the hardcover which will be published on 11th June 2024 by Titan books. I ordered the signed edition from Forbidden Planet which will be released a week or so later. Two for Tuesday and an open book challenge! I was thinking what to post for today's two for Tuesday and I've decided it'll be a good idea to do an A-Z. 26 books going through the alphabet. One book for each letter. After all, every book we read is just the same 26 letters rearranged. Today I've used my A and Z books. I know this has probably been done before but hey, why the hell not!? A few rules: 1. Each book's title must begin with the letter you are using. For example. A - Ash. 2. 'The' can only be used under the letter T. For example, you can't use The Rats for your R book. A friend sent me this - it was my favourite book when I was 13 - 14 and I hadn't read it since then. Jesus! I wasn't surprised by the gore and nastiness (it's about the survivors of a nuclear war being attacked and eaten by big rats) but the opening chapters (the best bit) where the missiles hit London is so insanely bleak and depressing! But at the time, the details of what it would be like were so familiar (I remember the "Protect and Survive" leaflets & stuff about eating your household pets) that I don't think it really penetrated and I was able to just go about my teenage business as usual. Klar ein komplexes literarisches Werk sollte man hierbei nicht erwarten, aber trotzdem lesenswert. Eine „leichte“ Story der man selbst nach einem stressigen Tag bequem folgen kann.
