Things to accept when bulking💪: 1) You will put on body fat, this is inevitable. 2) Food will likely be pushed to a degree that makes you feel uncomfortable. 3) You could well feel sluggish at times. 4) You’ll probably have thoughts that you wish you weren’t bulking and were leaner. Bulking is necessary in order to improve your physique. Enjoy seeing strength gains and focus on destroying your sessions with the extra calories and recovery capabilities. Our thoughts do influence our actions. Especially our health & fitness actions. As someone who used to sneer at the idea of having a ‘positive attitude’, I’ve learned that having the right beliefs are important. And they can accelerate your fitness progress like nothing else. So here’s 3 key beliefs that you can adopt and see faster results each week: #1.) 1% growth each day (kaizen) Kaizen is the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement. Every day builds upon each other. Like blocks of legos. Kaizen is the approach of true progress = 1% better per day. If you compound this over a year, you’ll be 37% better by the end of the year. What would your life look like after 12, 18, 24+ months of being 37%, 50%, or 75% enhanced and improved? Only you hold the answer to this. #2.) Progress over perfection In the West (and most parts of the world), perfectionism and ALWAYS being your best are valued highly. When you focus on PROGRESS over perfection each day, you create forward momentum. Rather than having a ‘perfect’ workout, you just work out (imperfectly). Rather than focusing on eating a ‘perfect’ meal, you do your best to eat a healthy meal (imperfectly). Focus on progress. #3.) My best days come after my worst days There will be good days. And bad days. And often, your best days will come after your worst days. Have you ever had a bad workout? A bad meal? A bad week? Most people quit and throw in the towel here. Rather, focus on the first two key mentalities and get back on track. Yet, nobody starts ANYTHING with the intention of quitting shortly afterward. Just got married? (can’t wait to quit…) Just started a new fitness program (can’t wait to quit…) Just started a new career or business? (can’t wait to quit…) No one says this. Yet nearly everyone quits. Think I should cut out carbs? I've been a REPS Certified Personal Trainer for 6 years + online coaching for 3. Here's a few tips I've learnt along the way: 1) There are many ways of achieving your specific fitness goals, there's not one size fits all, it's about finding what works for you and what you enjoy. 2) If you don't enjoy the process you will be unsatisfied when you reach the outcome. 3) We compare ourselves far too often with others in the fitness world. Try to focus on improving and bettering yourself rather than against people you might see on social media or in the gym. 4) Do this for YOU. Like anything else in life, do it because YOU want to do it and not because you're trying to please someone else. 5) Consistency is more important than perfection. Being 80% adherent for a prolonged period of time will lead to far more results than 100% for a short period of time. 6) There's absolutely nothing wrong with always striving to improve and be better. However, try and take the time to appreciate what you've achieved and are achieving. Enjoy the moment and the process. 7) There are no EVIL foods despite what anyone tells you. If you want to lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit, if you want to gain weight you need to be in a calorie surplus. It's really that simple. 8) Scale weight can be a useful marker of progression BUT we are far too guilty of developing an emotional attachment to certain numbers on the scale. Convincing ourselves we need to weigh an arbitrary number in order to look or feel a certain way. Really these fabricated numbers are meaningless. It's how you perform, look and feel. These are the most important metrics. 9) This stuff takes TIME. However, it's an immensely rewarding journey that has an abundance of physical and mental benefits. 💻- If you want help with your fitness journey, whether you are a complete beginner or have been training for years. It's almost a year since my hand surgery... And I'm going to have another one in a short period of time. Despite all the problems with my grip and the pain, in this past year, I was able to become strong as I've never been... And that is not magic .. Or shourt cuts .. But consistency . There will always be bumps on the road, but you can choose how to deal with it. You are in control. You are powerful . Anything you want can be achieved if you are willing to do the work and be consistent. And this can be applied in anything in life, yourself , your job, and relationships. I spent years training incorrectly. Yet, so do most people. When it comes to cardio, I wasn't training smart. I was copying the masses. Cardiovascular training is a core pillar of health. The better your heart health, the longer you’ll live. Does that mean you need to live in the gym and do endless hours of cardio? No. But cardio and raising your activity levels usually make it easy to keep your metabolism high, especially if you’re in a deficit. For sports performance, it’s often a prerequisite. Cardio = a great tool for heart health, endurance, and energy. Cardio < not an effective for ONLY fat-loss (however, it can work in harmony with a caloric deficit paired with strength training). Why? You can easily eat the calories you burn from a cardio workout in a snack bar but it’s harder to regain weight when you’re dropping weight from a deficit and building active tissue like muscle from lifting weights. So, how can you use cardio properly in your workouts? Do your cardio post lifting weights. There's a concept in the strength world called the interference effect. What this means is that when you have two exercise signals hitting your body, the easier one to adapt to usually wins. In the case of strength training and cardio - the cardio signal usually wins. You can minimize or eliminate the interference effect by doing your cardio post lifting or even spread apart. What works best for your schedule will tend to be the most optimal - since it's sustainable. I also wrote an in-depth article on this exact topic in a recent letter a few weeks back.
