******** Book #32: Such Sharp Teeth // @rachelharrisonsghost “The werewolf thing only enhances all the parts of me that were already broken and wrong. It’s trapped me with the worst of myself. It’s my reckoning.” This was my first Rachel Harrison and I’m so, SO glad I ordered it from @bookoutlet because it’s a new favorite for me. Looks like I’ll be reading all of Harrison’s other books now 👀 In Such Sharp Teeth, we meet Rory Harris - a fiercely independent, rebellious soul living the glam life in Manhattan. When her twin sister, Scarlett, finds out she’s pregnant and her boyfriend is out of the picture, Rory comes back home to help. But back home brings up old memories she would rather keep hidden, as well as a high school crush, Ian. When driving home one night, she gets into a car accident and is chased by what she thinks is a bear, but then bitten by a werewolf. Rory must come to terms with this new, supernatural chapter of her life while juggling her family, friends, and love. To say I loved this story is an understatement. Harrison wrote these characters so beautifully, she even made their ugliest moments wonderful. A true novel of horror and heart, I loved Rory and Scarlett’s sibling dynamic, and how funny and raw Rory was as a FMC. The idea of Rory wrestling with both a physical and emotional transformation throughout the book was so poignant. Highly recommended for fans of gore and great character development! #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #horror

QOTD: Do you enjoy reading about little remembered points of history, or what do you prefer? Thank you to the publisher, St Martins Press, @StMartinsPress, and Netgalley @Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review. This book covers the events of the West Virginia Mine wars, the largest armed conflict on American soil since the Civil War. The characters come to life in a propulsive, character driven tale. This book has a story of unexplained friendship, heroism in the face of injustice, and the power of love and community against outsized odds. Rednecks is certainly a dramatized approach to historical fiction, and it was quite the wild ride. This book had a mix of real and fictional characters who worked in the West Virginia coal mines. Doc Moo was probably my favorite character of the book, he was inspired by the author’s own great-grandfather, which was really cool. All the characters were a lot of fun, and really came to life in an interesting and enchanting way. This book took something I don’t think that I have ever heard about and turned it into a great story. I was inspired to do some research of my own after reading this book, and it is really fascinating. What a horrible point in time and I am glad that things resolved. This author knows how to bring history to life and transport you to the front lines all while getting you interested. If you are interested in the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in American history, which is truly fascinating, then you need to read this book. ******** Book #31: Listen for the Lie // @amytintera “Some people will never believe you no matter how hard you explain yourself. Trust me, there’s no pleasing people. If they’re determined to think the worst of you, they will.” All of bookstagram hyped me up to read this one and I will say, it truly delivered. I flew through this fast-paced thriller! In Listen for the Lie, we meet our FMC Lucy Chase. A lost soul living in LA, she has a dark past hanging over her head in the form of an unsolved murder in her hometown. Ben Owens has started a podcast, Listen for the Lie, getting to the bottom of who killed Lucy’s best friend 5 years ago, Savannah or Savvy. The only problem? Lucy was there and found walking around covered in her blood, but she doesn’t remember any of it. Will going back to her hometown help her put the pieces together in her memory? 👀🔪 I absolutely loved this thriller - it had a healthy mix of mystery, thrills, and delicious sarcasm from the FMC. I also lived for Lucy’s grandmother Beverly, she was a class act. The dark humor and realistic standards for men is what really made me feel like this was such a unique thriller. I also always love mixed media in books and enjoyed the super short podcast chapters! Highly recommend for fans of thrillers where the FMC is unreliable or gaining back their memory!! #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #listenforthelie #thriller

******** Book #29: Razorblade Tears / S.A. Cosby “Tears ran from his eyes and stung his cheeks. Tears for his son. Tears for his wife. Tears for the little girl they had to raise. Tears for who they were and what they all had lost. Each drop felt like it was slicing his face open like a razorblade.” Another S.A. Cosby down, and I’m obsessed. I immediately knew from the first page I was going to love this story and the characters, and I truly did - until the very end. In Razorblade Tears, we meet Ike and Buddy Lee - two fathers on the worst day of their lives. They meet at their sons’ funerals - they were married to each other and both fathers had trouble accepting their gay sons. Stuck in their grief and guilt, Ike and Buddy Lee decide to take justice into their own hands for their sons. Whatever it takes. They are met with some wild adventures and lots of violence and bloodshed along the way. Similar to All the Sinners Bleed, Cosby walks the perfect line of brutality and introspection in this story. He has such a gift of creating majorly flawed characters you find yourself rooting for, and this is no exception. I loved Ike and Buddy Lee and it was so emotional to see them move through their own grief of losing their sons, and the future relationships they could have had with them. Cosby speaks to an all true reality of intolerant parents of gay children and not understanding until it’s too late that all they want is love and acceptance. A touching story of loss, love, found family, and unlearning, you’ll find yourself cheering for Ike and Buddy Lee from start to finish. Highly, highly recommend!! #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #sacosby

******** Book #25: The Reappearance of Rachel Price // Holly Jackson 🔍🫥👭📁⚠️ I’ve been so stoked for Holly Jackson’s new novel and I’m so so glad I picked it up in Vancouver at an @indigo on my birthday! I immediately started it on my trip and boy it was a wild ride. In Jackson’s latest book, we are introduced to Bel, or Annabel, Price. The girl whose entire life is defined by her mother’s disappearance when she was a toddler. Now, 16 years later, Bel’s family has agreed to having a documentary made about their lives and her mom’s disappearance, only the unthinkable happens - Rachel Price reappears. Where has she been? Who took her all these years? Bel investigates her mom’s disappearance- and reappearance - and brings so many more family secrets to light. 👀 I loved this book - Jackson has such a way of writing flawed, emotional, and relatable FMC’s, even younger ones with the YA genre she writes in. This should be a lesson to all who say “oh it’s YA? I don’t think I’ll like that.” No. Give it a try bc Jackson writes compelling, layered characters. Can’t recommend this one enough! #qotd: have you read Jackson’s newest novel? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #hollyjackson #ya #youngadult

******** Book #24: The Naturals // Jennifer Lynn Barnes 🔪🩸🔫📂🔎 It should shock no one, but I flew through The Naturals and ended up finishing it on the plane to Vancouver!! I absolutely loved this first book in this series (probably more than The Inheritance Games, tbh) In The Naturals, we meet 17 year old Cassie Hobbes - a girl with a traumatic past just trying to survive living with her giant Italian family. Her mom was murdered five years before and she found the scene of the crime, but they never found her body. 👀 When a strange guy comes to her work telling her about a program with the FBI, she is thrust into a whole new world of teen profilers, or Naturals. Can she find out more about her mom’s murder? I really loved this read - super fast and fun. It had a little bit of everything: murder, thriller, FBI profiling mixed with a love triangle and some really fun side characters. I’m so glad I picked this book up and I will 100000% be getting the next book very soon. ******** Book #22: The Land of Lost Things // John Connolly 📖🧌👩‍👧♥️✨ “That was what stories did, or the ones that mattered to us: They helped us to understand others, but they could also make us feel understood in turn, and less alone in the world.” While it took me a minute to finish, I absolutely adored The Land of Lost things ♥️✨ The first in this series - The Book of Lost Things - is one of my favorite stories of all time, so I knew I would fall in love with this story. It’s a special read bc I went with @nikkisbookshelves to a signing for this book and got both books signed!! In The Land of Lost Things, we meet Ceres - a mother whose daughter Phoebe is in a coma from a tragic car accident. While taking care of her, she is introduced to The Book of Lost Things and when exploring an old, condemned house, finds herself launched into the world in that book. Except it’s a world of her own creation and she must find her way out, back to her daughter. I’ve had major burnout with life and work stuff so reading has been a struggle, but I’m so glad I kept reading this magical tale. Connolly is such a favorite of mine with his exceptional ability to weave his love of stories and words into his writing. I also loved that each title of the chapter of this book was an old, ancient word that tied into the theme of the chapter. So, so cool! I highly recommend this enchanting, yet brutal fairy tale for those who love magical stories with poignant endings. #qotd: have you read this book yet? Just finished this book and if you are okay with some triggers, this is a great dark romance. Perfect amount of spice, story, and suspense. There are no Saints by Sophie Lark She knows he's no saint, but she has no idea she's dancing with the devil. Cole Blackwell values control. He's the hottest sculptor in San Francisco―wealthy, successful, and respected. His only weakness is the dark impulse he carefully conceals. In truth, he's not just an artist: he's a predator, and the city is his hunting ground. Mara Eldritch is a nobody. Broke and damaged, she works three jobs while creating paintings no one will ever see. When a chance encounter throws Mara into Cole's path, her escape from certain death fascinates Cole. More than that―it fixates him #triggerwarnings #redflags #smut #readersgunnaread

******** Book #21: Kill for Me, Kill for You // Steve Cavanagh 🔪👯‍♀️🩸 Thank you so much to @karsbookclub for sending me this ARC! I absolutely flew through it - what a wild ride. One dark evening in NYC, two strangers - Amanda and Wendy - meet by chance. They connect over an intense desire to get revenge for the men who destroyed their families. By the end of the night, they’ve made a pact: if you kill for me, I’ll kill for you. In another part of the city, Ruth is home alone when she’s attacked while her husband Scott is out for the night. She’s attacked by a man with piercing blue eyes - will she ever feel safe again while this evil stranger is out free? I REALLY enjoyed the pacing, short and quick chapters of this story. It had a twist I didn’t expect and I really could see this as a Netflix series, it’s so well put together! I’m a tad undecided about the *very* end, but I still loved the ride and I might be looking into more from Cavanagh!! #qotd: have you read this book yet? 🎧Not an actual review, audiobook review 🎧 My Dark Vanessa By Kate Elizabeth Russell Narrated by Grace Gummer 👎🏻👎🏻 I had ZERO idea what this book was about until I started listening to the audiobook, heard the authors notes and then googled her. I should’ve stopped there. I got 38% of the way through, so well past my DNF mark of 30%, and tried REALLY hard to keep going. But I couldn’t. The adult and child manipulation, gaslighting and seduction was more than I could handle. There are SO many trigger warnings with this one and I couldn’t handle them any longer. I do not recommend this book. It is truly terrible.

******** Book #20: The Many Lives of Mama Love // @laralovehardin “I have done lots of good in my life, and I have also done lots of bad. One doesn’t negate the other. And the truth is, I don’t believe the worst thing I have ever done is found in the stealing or lying or drug abuse. The worst thing I’ve ever done is build an identity out of the worst thing I’ve ever done.” Thanks so much to @simonbooks for this gifted copy of The Many Lives of Mama Love - I absolutely loved this @oprahsbookclub memoir telling the story of one woman’s struggle to find her own way against all odds. I’ll admit, memoir is not my favorite genre. But, I’m so glad I read this because Hardin is such a talented storyteller. I kept having to remind myself this was a *real* person’s life experience, it was written so well. I loved her voice - it was emotional, empathetic, and funny. I also respected how much she learned about how broken our justice system is from her own experience being incarcerated. One of my favorite quotes on this was, “because how we take care of broken people matters. Fundamentally, I believe, it determines our own humanity.” This is an amazing story of redemption and one woman’s journey of acceptance and self-forgiveness. ******** Book #19: Five Survive // Holly Jackson “One sniper. One gun. One red dot. And one liar.” As expected, Holly Jackson took me for another wild ride in Five Survive - this time it was just in an RV. 🔪🩸🚐 I absolutely loved her AGGGTM series, and this standalone book really packed a punch. I love Jackson’s ability to combine brutal violence with really unique characters. In Five Survive, a group of 20 something’s are making a spring break trip from Philly to Florida in an RV. Classic college road trip? I think not. When their RV breaks down and they are lost in the middle of nowhere with no service, they have to find their way home. Now, add an active shooter targeting them and they don’t know why. Who has a secret and what will they do to survive? 👀 I’m such a fan of Holly Jackson and this was a hit for me. Loved it! ******** Book #18: My Sister, The Serial Killer // Oyinkan Braithwaite “That’s how it has always been. Ayoola would break a glass, and I would receive the blame for giving her the drink. Ayoola would fail a class, and I would be blamed for not coaching her. Ayoola would take an apple and leave the store without paying for it, and I would be blamed for letting her get hungry.” This was my work’s book club pick for March and it was so interesting! While it was a book I wouldn’t normally pick up, I read it easily in almost one sitting. With fast chapters, I flew through the story of Korede and Ayoola - the sisters from hell. 😂 Set in Lagos, Nigeria, this story revolves around Korede, the responsible older sister and Ayoola, the spoiled, entitled baby sister, who also happens to be a sociopath. She’s killed now 3 of her boyfriends and Korede is always there to clean up her messes, literally. As the story goes on, there are twists and turns, but I felt this story was most about the toxic relationship of two sisters who don’t know how to live without each other. Korede enables her sister to the point of wanting to pull your own hair out, and Ayoola just doesn’t care about the emotions or feelings of others. While some might not enjoy the ending - I thought it was really insightful and I won’t lie, I kinda love when the story isn’t wrapped up in a perfect bow. I thought this was a super fun, dark, and fast story about the codependent love of two sisters gone so wrong. I recommend it! #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #mysistertheserialkiller

******** Book #17: Broken (Will Trent Series, #4) // @karinslaughterauthor “You gotta go through a special kind of hell or a special kind of love to change who you are inside.” Jumped back into the world of Will Trent with my latest read, and - per usual - I loved it. Since this was my only library hold and I’ve renewed it 4-5 times already, I needed to get to it 🫣 I won’t get into too much detail with this story since this is the 4th book in a series, but in Broken we are back in Will’s world with a new POV - Lena Adams. In Undone, we are introduced to Dr. Sara Linton - a character from Slaughter’s Grant County series that makes her way into the Will Trent universe. In Broken, we have alternating POVs between Will, Sara, and Lena. Unlike the other Will Trent books I’ve read, this is a much slower story with more character development than action or thrills. I do enjoy the brutality that Slaughter brings to each case, and this wasn’t as wild, but I think it was necessary to have this kind of book to really learn more about these characters and how they are growing. I love learning more about Will and I do wish Faith was in this book more - I love their partner relationship! I also loved learning more about Sara and Slaughter writes about grief so poignantly, it almost made me emotional. I loved this trip back into Trent’s world and I can’t wait to keep going with Fallen soon! #qotd: have you read the Will Trent series! #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #karinslaughter #willtrent #detective

******** Book #16: A Mirror Mended // Alix E. Harrow “Maybe because it never occurred to me that it could be enough just to live, as happily as you can, for as long as you have.” I’m so, so glad I found Alix E. Harrow and her books - she is such an auto-buy author for me now. I absolutely adored A Spindle Splintered - the first in this fractured fairy tale series - and A Mirror Mended was even better, in my opinion. In A Mirror Mended, we pick up right where Harrow left us with Zinnia Gray of Ohio. I won’t say too much since I don’t want to spoil the plot of the first book, but in this story, Zinnia is hopping into different realities to save princesses and give them their happy ever after. But, she’s so focused on saving others that she doesn’t see that her own reality is falling down around her. We meet a new cast of characters and delve into Snow White folklore for this adventure - it was such a creative story with so much heart and raw emotion. I love the FMC of Zinnia - she’s so sarcastic and flawed. So relatable. Her inner struggle to help others as a way to not deal with how her own story, or “happily ever after” is going is so poignant. I loved how Harrow was able to combine the eerie tales of Grimm and Snow White with more modern themes of having your own agency, feminism, and that everyone’s happily ever after looks a lot different. I really hope Harrow keeps writing these novellas!! #qotd: what’s your favorite fairy tale? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #fantasy #alixeharrow #fairytales

******** Book #15: Everyone on This Train is a Suspect // Benjamin Stevenson “If one of the six of us was to die right now, you’d have five suspects who all know how to get away with murder.” Ernest Cunningham is back, and I would argue, better than ever. I absolutely loved Stevenson’s first book - Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone - and this story might be an even better sequel. A clever, fun follow up to the first, Stevenson continues the gimmick of the first book with a whole new cast of characters! I won’t say too much of the plot since it might give away any spoilers or the first book, for those who haven’t read it. In this story, we find Ernest on the Ghan - an infamous train in Australia - with a group of writers for a festival. Once again, people start dropping dead around him and he’s there to solve the case, and mess up - a lot. I really love Stevenson’s books bc they are not only hilarious, but Ernest is so real. He’s super flawed and always making mistakes. I love how the author writes directly to the reader, like you’re the first to know his innermost thoughts. I also love how Stevenson pokes fun at the publishing industry in this book 😅 It’s a wonderful, fun and action-filled sequel with great twists and turns (and a super funny narrator I could hang with all day). #qotd: have you read these books? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #mystery #thriller #benjaminstevenson

******** Book #14: All the Sinners Bleed // S.A. Cosby “Even the people we loved kept pieces of themselves hidden away from the light.” It’s only the end of February and I may have already found my favorite book of 2024! This is my first S.A. Cosby and I devoured this story, the characters, and the expertly written plot. Huge shoutout to @nikkisbookshelves for hyping this author up and introducing me to his books!! All the Sinners Bleed sticks us in Charon County, Virginia where Sheriff Titus Crown has come back to his hometown to protect, serve, and dole out a little bit of well-deserved justice to the old ways of the south in this traditional town. Balancing taking care of his father, cleaning up his brother’s messes, a love life, and being a Black sheriff in a racist southern town, Titus is up against big odds. A shooting at the local high school is the brutal domino effect for the violence this town will endure at the hands of a deranged serial killer. From start to finish, I was sucked into this story. I absolutely loved Cosby’s writing. He’s such an expert in incorporating social commentary, themes of race, class, and religion into his writing. I found myself really connected to the characters and their POV’s too - I absolutely loved Titus’ relationship with his father and his struggle with his own personal faith and beliefs. His writing is so raw, real, and amazingly brutal. Lastly, I did love how intense the story was - it gave me Karin Slaughter vibes and I highly recommend! Cosby is 10000% my newest auto-buy author (I may already have his other two books on my cart 🫣) #qotd: have you read any S.A. ******** Book #13: A Thousand Ships // Natalie Haynes “When a war was ended, the men lost their lives. But the women lost everything else.” Well folks, Natalie Haynes did it again. This was my work’s book club pick this month and was so so happy to see when it won bc it’s been on my list for so long!! While Stone Blind is still my absolute favorite from Haynes, A Thousand Ships tells the crucial tale of the Trojan War from the POV you don’t often see - all of the women. From the women of Troy, to the Greek goddesses who helped shape the fate of this infamous war, Penelope waiting for her husband Odysseus to return from war, to Calliope, the goddess of dance and music - this story puts the women at the center of this age-old tale of violence, loss, and suffering. While I’m well versed in the epic that is the Trojan War and 95% of this book wasn’t me learning anything new, I felt it was such an important message to send about a war that is usually always told through a man’s eyes. This is also a perfect novel for those who may not know much about Greek myth, but want to learn more and are curious! Haynes has such a gift of combining modern expression and emotion with the classic, tradition elements of Greek myth. I’ll leave you all with the most amazing quote from Calliope that I feel sums up this heartbreaking, beautiful story: “But this is a women’s war, just as much as it is the men’s, and the poet will look upon their pain - the pain of the women who have always been relegated to the edges of the story, victims of men, survivors of men, slaves of men - and he will tell it, or he will tell nothing at all. They have waited long enough for their turn.” #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #greekmyth #mythretellings #trojanwar #athousandships

******** Book #12: A Spindle Splintered // Alix E. Harrow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Maybe the universe doesn’t naturally bend toward justice either; maybe it’s only the weight of hands and hearts pulling it true, inch by stubborn inch.” Am I posting again today? Yup. Do I care? Nope. While sick today and resting with earl, I was able to finish this short, and so SO good fractured fairy tale from Alix E. Harrow! Thanks to @bellabean.doesbookreviews for this book in our galentine’s gift exchange 💘 The first in Harrow’s fractured fables, this is a shorter story of Zinnia Gray, a girl who hasn’t expected to make it to her 21st birthday. Living with Generalized Roseville Malady, her life has been cut short. With help from her best friend Charm, she has a sleeping beauty themed birthday, and ends up being propelled into a fairy tale universe when pricking her finger on a spindle. It’s in this other universe that she meets another Princess whose fate is sealed, and she helps her break free from what is expected of her, and along the way learns what is most important. I absolutely adored Harrow’s story! I am huge fan of twisted fairy tales, and Harrow’s writing is so modern and filled with humor while expressing really important themes of health, self-reliance, and fighting against the stereotypes of what it means to be “sick.” I may have already ordered the second fractured fable today 😌 I can’t wait to dive in and experience another adventure - with gorgeous art and illustrations on the inside too btw 😻 #qotd: what’s your favorite fairy tale? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #fairytales #fracturedfairytales #alixeharrow #sleepingbeauty

#Repost @earlsbookclub with @use.repost ・・・ ******** Book #10: Boys in the Valley // @pfracassi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “One reason tragedy exists is to teach us how to help others, help others learn how to find a way through their own dark time, through a journey of growth.” Welp, this is one hell of a coming of age story my friends. I randomly picked this book up at @mystgalaxybooks and I’m honestly so glad I did. It wasn’t aligned with the genre I would normally pick, horror isn’t something I tend to read much of at all. Fracassi really turned me into more of a horror lover! In Boys in the Valley, we are introduced to Peter - an orphaned boy who is born into trauma and tragedy. He lives at the St. Vincent’s Orphanage for boys where food is rare and punishment from the priests is severe. While some priests are loving and serve a fatherly role, others are strict and unforgiving. One night, the local sheriff brings in a dying man for the priests to help, coming from a horrific scene - and this man is more than meets the eye. He is truly evil and his death brings about an onslaught of gore, violence, and some seriously evil little boys. While this is a wonderfully written horror story, it’s not one I would recommend for all. It’s not for the faint hearted - it is *very* violent pretty much throughout the entire story, and just so so sad. What I loved about Fracassi’s writing was how well he developed the relationships of the characters, and beautifully wove in themes of hope, faith, and how it can be a challenge to actually define good vs evil. It’s a touching story about the coming of age friendship of boys, with a terrifying mix of Lord of Flies and the supernatural. Also, Byron will forever and always be my favorite. What a good dude. 🥹 #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #boysinthevalley #horror #gothichorror

******** Book #9: Good Bad Girl // @alicewriterland ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “The world is full of people who are good at being bad, and people who are bad at being good.” Another Feeney finished! I had to snag this *hilarious* photo of Earl playing with my scrunchie - it looks like he is taking a selfie 😹 Thanks to @nikkisbookshelves for letting me have this ARC - another Feeney I devoured and truly enjoyed! In Feeney’s most recent story, we are introduced to several female characters: Judith, Patience, and Clio. I won’t talk too much about the plot here as I might spoil things, but Feeney weaves a wonderfully twisted tale of mothers, daughters, and what it truly means to sacrifice for the ones you love. If you’re expecting the mega crazy thrills of Feeney’s usual books, that’s not Good Bad Girl. More of a mystery, this story delves deeper into the characters and how they came to be. I loved that Feeney really made me think twice about what defines “good” and “bad” acts and people. ******** Book #8: Are You Listening? // Tillie Walden ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Everyone everything has potential for magic. You just gotta be standing somewhere in the world and in the body that lets you see it.” Randomly picked up this book while on vacation visiting family in Northern California and I’m so glad I did. Did I pick it up bc the cover had a cat on it? Maybe. 👀 In this graphic novel, Bea, an 18 year old girl, is on the run from home and while afraid of where she will go next, runs into someone she knows from her hometown, Lou. Lou decides to drive her to another town, and that is where they embark on a road trip they didn’t expect. I went into this graphic novel pretty blind, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well Walden wrote about really heavy topics. I really appreciated how she inserted some magical realism into the story with a mysterious town, and a magical, lost kitty needing to find his way home. Just as a warning, there are mentions of SA, which I found to be really poignant. A tale of two flawed people who are able to find each other when they most need it and bond through grief and pain, this is a graphic novel I wouldn’t recommend to *everyone*, but it’s a wonderfully written - and beautifully illustrated story. #qotd: do you read graphic novels? February TBR 3 looks a bit Christmasy. Also adding on Little Women - Louisa May Alcott as I’m midway but not quite finished it. It’s been a fun January overall. Not perfect but I’ve been loving life. A lot of people I know are unemployed just like we are in this household and I think that’s wild. I wouldn’t say it’s the norm for a whole friend group to be unemployed. Interesting times we live in for sure. Last TBR 3 I said I was excited to get back to routine. Well… that failed. Hopefully in February, along with my new alpha reading project I’ll be up earlier and back into said routine. ******** Book #7: The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches // Sangu Mandanna ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “It’s not always enough to go looking for the place we belong. Sometimes we need to make that place.” This was my work’s book club pick for January and when I first saw it won, I was a little disappointed I won’t lie. I’m not a romance reader in the slightest, but everyone on here convinced me in my DMs that it’s not focused on romance, it’s a subplot. It’s more about found family - a cozy witchy story of finding your place in the world. And that’s what it turned out to be. 🥹 In Mandanna’s book, we are introduced to Mika, a witch in her thirties who attends the Very Secret Society of Witches. Primrose, the leader of the witches, is stubborn, old-school, and set in her ways about keeping all witches safe by never attaching themselves to each other. Mika was raised by Primrose and other nannies, living a childhood filled with loneliness and boredom. So, it’s when a stranger sends her a message through her witchy YouTube series to work at Nowhere House, she decides she needs a change. What ensues is pure chaos, but also so much hope, love, and wholesomeness. This was such a sweet, cozy story about finding your own home. Mika was a lovable character, but the side characters were even cuter - Ian being my personal favorite. And Circe 🥹🐾 The romance was there, but it wasn’t too cringey or corny. I felt Jamie and Mika were a cute pairing! I definitely recommend for readers who loved The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door - all wonderful tales of found family ♥️ #qotd: have you read this book? ******** Book #6: The Family Remains // Lisa Jewell ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “And when you hate someone, it leaves deeper scars on your psyche than loving someone ever can.” And with that, this story comes to an end. I’m so, so glad I didn’t hold off on reading this standalone sequel bc I truly enjoyed it! Sometimes, you just gotta find out for yourself, rather than let Goodreads reviews sway you. In The Family Remains, the story of Libby Jones and her family continues where it left off in The Family Upstairs. Because this is a standalone sequel, there was a good deal of explanation of events in the first book, which felt a little boring to repeat, including a new detective character who I didn’t really find myself invested in, but other than that, I loved the characters in this book. Jewell has such an innate skill at making you feel for characters in a thriller novel. It’s not as common for characters in a murder mystery to have depth and inner turmoil that you relate to. In TFR, we continue hearing from Henry and other family members, as well as new characters who I didn’t think I would care about, but I grew to cheer for. I loved the ending, it was especially twisted and really spoke true to who the characters are. Some might label this sequel as slow and boring or unnecessary, but I found it to be an ode to these characters - a love letter to telling the stories of people in the background of a thriller novel. I will definitely be reading more of Lisa Jewell - she’s officially an auto-buy author! #qotd: have you read any Lisa Jewell books? ******** Book #5: The Family Upstairs // Lisa Jewell ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Welp folks, I did it again. 👀 I didn’t think it was possible but I finished another book in one day while sick with nowhere to go. 😂 I’m quickly learning that Lisa Jewell is an auto-buy author, I absolutely love her writing and how she’s able to combine a fast-paced thriller and great twists with quality character development. In The Family Upstairs, we meet Libby, a girl in her twenties who is about to learn who her parents are. What she ends up learning is that she inherited a mansion, that comes with a very intense backstory. In the 80’s, her parents were found dead in the house and only she was left as a baby in a crib. While they chalked it up to cult behavior, Libby learns more about her past and that this house is real creepy. What actually happened that night? When I tell you I couldn’t put this book down, my dudes. I went to watch Da Vinci Code but kept looking at my book and thinking, “just another few chapters.” 👀 I ate this one up yet again, and I’ll be diving into The Family Remains soon, I have that one as well! #qotd: have you read any Lisa Jewell books? ******** Book #4: The Drowning Woman // @rhardingwriter @grandcentralpub ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “There is more than one way to play the game. And there is more than one way to win it.” The perks of being sick? Finishing a book in one day 🤒😂📖 I absolutely TORE through The Drowning Woman from the moment it started. What a well done thriller!! In this book, we meet Lee Gulliver - a homeless woman who was hit hard by the pandemic. While she owned her own restaurant in New York pre-COVID, she lost her business and had to take desperate measures when she owed money to the wrong people. Far from home and living in her car, Lee stumbles upon Hazel, another desperate woman who tries to take her own life by wading into a freezing lake. It’s this chance meeting that kicks off a series of events that even I couldn’t have predicted!! I loved Harding’s writing! Fast paced, she was skilled at keeping me on my toes and - with how many thrillers I’ve read - even proved me wrong with certain twists! I loved this story and I loved how much she truly told a tale of two desperate women finding each other on their worst days. Highly recommend for lovers of None of this is True, His & Hers, and Just Another Missing Person ✨ #qotd: Have you read The Drowning Woman? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #thedrowningwoman #thriller

******** Book #3: The Inheritance Games // Jennifer Lynn Barnes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Everything’s a game, Avery Grambs. The only thing we get to decide in this life is if we play to win.” I woke up even more sick than I felt yesterday, which is a bummer but at least I finished this super fun book! I picked this one up randomly from seeing it so much on here and it’s worth the hype. This first book introduces Avery - a normal, broke, living in her car kinda teenager. One day, her entire life changes when she finds out that Tobias Hawthorne, an eccentric billionaire, has left her his entire fortune in his will. Why did he leave his fortune to a perfect stranger? Avery must live in the Hawthorne mansion and deal with the four Hawthorne grandsons while navigating this new lifestyle. Not all is what it seems, and Avery and the grandsons must solve puzzles and clues Tobias left to figure out the secrets to his will. I really enjoyed this one. Barnes is an amazing author and she kept me interested throughout the entire novel. I loved Avery’s love triangle with Jameson and Grayson, and the very Knives Out feel that this plot gave. But with more puzzles 😍 I definitely want to continue this series - the ending left it on such a cliffhanger!! #qotd: have you read this series? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #theinheritancegames #ya

******** Book #2: None of This is True // @lisajewelluk ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “When she doesn’t like the reality of things, she finds a reality she prefers.” Holy guacamole, friends. I flew through this book - so so glad I picked it up next! When I tell you this is a gripping crime thriller, 👀 It’s like “I gotta pee but I don’t wanna stop reading this chapter” kinda gripping. In Jewell’s newest novel, we meet Alix Summers, a popular podcaster on the hunt for a new angle. She’s out celebrating her 45th birthday and seemingly meets Josie Fair, also celebrating her 45th birthday. Birthday twins 👯‍♀️. This is where their connection begins. Alix makes her the subject of her new podcast, but not all is what it seems. 👀👀 I’ll stop there with any summary bc this is a spoiler-free zone, but I absolutely loved Jewell’s writing! For a thriller, she’s so good at developing relatable, flawed characters you feel for. Also, I really enjoyed the multimedia throughout the book with a Netflix documentary included and excerpts from her podcast. That ending, man. I’m still reeling from it 😳 There are a few uncomfy themes that I didn’t particularly love (per my stories 😅) but they did feel necessary to the plot and overall characters. I love loved this one and plan to read all of Lisa Jewell’s backlog now!! #qotd: have you read any Lisa Jewell? ******** Book #1: Fairy Tale // Stephen King ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “There’s a dark well in everyone, I think, and it never goes dry. But you drink from it at your peril. That water is poison.” I really committed starting a 600 page Stephen King novel right before Christmas break, but it was so incredibly worth it bc this was such a wonderfully emotional tale of love, loss, learning, and magic. King introduces us to Charlie Reade, a 17 year old boy who makes the choice to help his older neighbor who has fallen while cleaning his gutters. That choice begins the first half of this book, which is beautifully written character development. Charlie bonds with Mr. Bowitch and his senior dog, Radar, while helping him get back on his feet. It is when Charlie finds a dark well leading to another world in Bowitch’s storage shed that things get even crazier. While this is an epic story of magic and myth, this is also just the story of a boy and his dog. I cried at least 3-4 times in the first half of this book when Radar was so old and dying, and I truly felt Charlie’s love for her when he crossed into another world to help save her. She was more than just a dog in a story, she was his friend. His companion, his heart. Charlie + Radar forever ♥️ I absolutely loved King’s writing - this was my second book of his, I’ve only ever read Carrie! I plan to definitely read more of his books, I cannot wait. I highly recommend this book for lovers of fairy tales, other worlds, and coming of age. #qotd: have you read any Stephen King? #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookreview #booksandcats #rescuecats #catsofinstagram #readersgunnaread #bookreview #stephenking #fairytales
