Tuesday's speed workout was an experiment of sorts on the treadmill. I know I can run hills outside but I've never attempted it indoors. I warmed up with about a half mile run then went straight into a 4% incline for 5 minutes straight. I did that a few times for 2 minutes spurts (I think about 10 but I lost count) over the 4 miles and ended with the 6% grade to challenge myself. Gonna have to incorporate these a bit more during my workouts since we don't have a ton of elevation around here. Great to get my climbing legs into shape! 😄

I love a big ass salad. No lie. The absolute best way to get in a ton of veggies, protein of your choice and tons of topping combinations. I haven't made my own dressing in awhile but this one was pretty amazing plus I got the extra bit of protein from the Greek yogurt which doesn't hurt. 🤤

Still hitting a three day lift/four day run split and it's going amazingly well. I'm making sure to eat enough and prioritizing protein first and it's made a difference. I'm getting thru my speed and hill workouts without dying and weights are getting heavier in the gym. Win win all around and I'm loving the journey. 🖤

These look a mess but they were really good and I inhaled them once they were done. I didn't have enough shrimp for two tacos, so I made some Cuban style black beans (cumin, onion, chili powder, a little cayenne pepper and jalapeno juice). I had some low carb high fiber tortillas also and those worked out great since I was out of my own. 🖤

I almost gave up on myself. 😔 I almost threw in the towel on my health because…I was a mom. I almost gave myself the excuse, “Why try? You want to have more kids!?” 🤷🏻‍♀️ I almost used that as my excuse, but decided to use it as my reason. 🙌🏼 Mamas, we deserve to feel our best in every stage of motherhood. I wish someone told me these things when I first started going to the gym... 👉 Swipe through for all my tips and save them for later! Let's rewind to when I first decided to ditch the endless cardio and dive headfirst into the world of strength training. I remember feeling terrified, **cue the nervous sweats and self-doubt!**😅 but my gym had a "women's room" where I felt safer learning how to lift weights. Honestly, it was a mixed bag of emotions. Don't get me wrong, it had its perks—supportive vibes and all—but deep down, I was itching to tackle those big weights on the main floor. Eventually I craved the challenge of squat racks, heavy leg presses, and deadlifts. So, one day, I got enough guts to go to the main weights section and approached the squat rack, despite my nerves. 🏋️‍♂️ I had watched COUNTLESS tutorial videos, but when it came time to execute, I royally messed up the squats. I think I did a few reps, but felt SO EMBARRASSED and like everyone was watching me. I left the gym immediately, cried in my car and let the self-doubt take over... 😰 Were the other women out in the main area judging me? 😰 Were those who knew what they are doing judging me? 😰 Why should I be in that area? I dont know what I am doing? But I refused to give up. I knew that nothing changes if nothing changes and I WANTED TO CHANGE. 💪 So, to keep the long story short, I continued to show up. I pushed through the discomfort, the mistakes, the moments of doubt, and then created this list of tips to help myself and anyone else out there! To anyone feeling anxious about stepping into the gym or trying something new: remember that growth begins at the edge of your comfort zone. Bad weather on Friday and Saturday prevented me from doing my long run outside. But thanks to my little treadmill in my bedroom, I got it done. It was squeaky, the belt skipped a bit if I went any faster than 5.6 and the safety magnet is missing on it, but it did the trick! 🤣 (I also threw my hair up in little space buns and doubted they would stay. They ended up remaining in place my entire run and it was nice not dealing with sweaty hair on the back of my neck. Also yay unintentional May the 4th hairdo!) 🖤

90° outside on Tuesday and uv rays were really high, so I tested out this long sleeve sun hoodie. Its thin and spf 50+ rated. I was good till I got to around 3 miles but I ended up ducking into a park bathroom to soak the top bit of the hoodie. Cooled me off really well and I ended up at 41:02 for 4 miles. Not bad at all. 🙌🏼 PM was a heavy leg day, plus we even maxed out the lower back extension. I love when that happens. Good Tuesday indeed! 🖤

Monday's run workout was an easy paced first mile followed by three tempo miles at threshold then back to easy pace. Mile two went really well but once I hit around 3.5, I was struggling a bit. Managed to keep my pace up and pushed thru to the end tho! The afternoon saw a great upper body workout with my sister in a busy gym. We ended with a core workout before calling it a day. 🖤

Just under two hours for those 11 miles which is a new PR for me! Also the first time I've held and maintained a pace in the 10 minute range for that long so yay for that. Our treadmills only go for 99 minutes so I had to restart for the last two which is a pace killer but gives me a chance to breathe for a few seconds. I ended up using one gel, half a pack of @honeystinger chews, one 500 ml bottle of Tailwind and one bottle of water. Those squeezy bottles work great on the treadmill and it was hilarious seeing gym folk staring at me while I drank and ran. Didn't bother me any since I was binging The Walking Dead. 🤣🖤

Last Tuesday's group trail run was great even tho I got there late. The group was about ten minutes ahead of me but since I've run trail out there plenty of times, I did my own thing. I walked a bit with one of the women of our group when I caught up and chatted with her then took off down a separate road. I aimed for a faster pace down that road back to the car and I nailed that despite the hotter 90° temps. Starting to acclimate to that hot weather finally! 🖤

Don't fear carbohydrates! Carbs are the body's preferred and most efficient source of energy during exercise, especially high-intensity activities like sprinting or endurance events like marathons. They are converted into glucose, which fuels muscles and provides the energy needed to perform. Carbohydrates also helps to regulate blood sugar levels during exercise. Carbohydrates are stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. Glycogen stores are essential for sustaining energy levels during prolonged exercise. Depleted glycogen levels can lead to fatigue and a decrease in performance. So making sure you consume carbohydrates before exercise helps top up glycogen stores, providing a readily available energy source for the muscles. This is particularly important if you are endurance athlete who engages in prolonged exercise. What about post-workout carbohydrates? Do you need them? Consuming carbohydrates post-exercise helps replenish glycogen stores and kick-starts the recovery process by promoting muscle repair and growth. You can try to pair carbs with protein post-workout so it can further enhance recovery and muscle protein synthesis. Carbs can be found in foods like grains, fruits and vegetables so there is plenty of different sources available. If you know me...you know that this sign couldn't be any more accurate...but some people think otherwise... Within our society, we can find unrealistic perceptions of what fueling ourselves with food looks like. Some think I don't eat that much due to my size. Then they are completely shocked when they see what I do consume and how much. I am always really clear about a few things regarding FOOD FUEL... 1. What you call it... I never associate feelings with food. Not GOOD or BAD food, but I rather use 'more nutritionally dense' and 'less nutritionally dense.' Both of which are consumed differently. 2. What you do with it... 1-2 palms or 3-4oz of protein (ie. Meat, fish, tofu) 1-2 fists or 1-2 cups of veggies 1-2 cupped handfuls or 100-130g of complex carbs (ie. grains, sweet potatoes) 1-2 thumbs or approx. 1 tbsp of healthy fats (ie. Olive oil, nuts, nut butter, avocado) *all info above for per meal* 2.5-3.5L water/day 3. How you consume it MINDFULLY. Without a device and paying attention to hunger cues such as fullness. (Working on this more and more for myself) The key to fueling yourself for FORM (ie. Weight management or muscle mass building goals) and FUNCTION (energy) is doing so safely and sustainably, not extremely and without consideration that societal norms require critical reflection. What does “high fiber” mean? For a portion of food that provides 15 grams of total carbohydrates, if 5 or more of those carbohydrates are fibrous carbohydrates then it’s a high fiber food. Swipe left to see three different veggies that are considered high fiber veggies. Zucchini, broccoli and tomatoes. Now just because a veggie is a high fiber veggie doesn’t mean you will eat a large quantity of fiber in a particular serving size. A standard serving size of most vegetables 🥗 may only provide 1-2 grams of fiber. You may need to eat multiple servings of that vegetable to intake 5 or more grams of fiber as they are very high volume foods.
