Barriers - feeling self conscious I'd love to be the type of person who doesn't feel self conscious but I've had to learn to be the type of person who feels self conscious but does it anyway! I believe that this is a very underrated barrier to health and fitness and is a big reason that I focus on making it as easy as it can be when new people start training with me. Things like clear instructions as to where we're going to meet and what to expect for the consultation and WhatsApp communities so those joining a group have already been able to say hi can go a long way in reducing the anxiety associated with feeling self conscious. When I was at the #ICanLive run by @richardmccannspeaker event at the weekend a lot of the speakers talked about doing things that pushed you outside of your comfort zone and this is so true when it comes to tackling issues of confidence. Have you ever flipped through photos reliving memories? My boys and I spent time last weekend flipping through photo albums. I loved telling them about the vacations my husband and I took before getting married, our wedding, each one of their pregnancies, and how they have grown over the years. It warmed my heart to relive those memories, but my heart broke simultaneously. As I looked at some of the photos, it rehashed memories of how much I hated my body. I used to think I was "fat" or "flabby" in my twenties. I would scrutinize every last little flaw about my body. After having my eldest son, I realized I was uncomfortable in my skin. I needed clarity on my relationship with my body to become confidently comfortable in my skin. Am I 100% comfortable in my skin today? No, not always, but I am at peace with my body and love it for all it has done for me, the adventures I have gone with it, the miles run, walked, or hiked, and the strength it has shown me. You may be in a season where you may be considering a fitness goal to change how you feel in your body. When considering a goal than a plan, start by establishing that goal from a place of gratitude for what your body has done for you. Not from a place of hate toward your body. 3 COMMON MISTAKES WHEN PERFORMING THE KETTLEBELL DEADLIFT 1. LETTING GO OF THE BELL BEFORE STARTING YOUR NEXT REP This can lead to a loss of tension in the body, which is something you DON’T WANT when lifting. Creating full body tension, or getting “tight” in the body and maintaining that tension when you lift can actually help you get stronger and lift more weight ( safely) over time. 2. NOT CREATING TENSION IN THE LATS Engaging this large sheet of muscle covering most of your back ( the Latissimus Dorsi, or Lats, for short), will help protect your lower back from taking the full force of the bell when you swing it between the legs. 3. MOVING FROM YOUR SPINE INSTEAD OF YOUR HIPS Often, leaning forward into the deadlift instead of sitting back into the hips can be the reason why you are feeling pain in your lower back when performing the kettlebell deadlift (and I’ve heard similar complaints from individuals doing other deadlift variations too) Learning how to hinge from the hips is CRUCIAL in performing a safe deadlift. SO many women want to look more “toned" But what does this actually mean and how do you achieve the toned look? 1. Build more muscle Muscle frames your body shape, to look firmer and more "toned" 2. Fat loss Fat loss helps to reveal the muscle underneath - BUT if you solely chase fat loss, and don't focus on building muscle, you will remain with a softer physique... During this incredibly hectic week I was reminded of yet another reason why I enjoy being a women’s trainer and coach. Multiple clients who have struggled with body image expressed a positive change in attitude about their bodies. Seeing someone go from I hate my body to ok I don’t hate my body but there are a few things I’d like to change about my body to light heartedly making humorous comments about things that months ago would have made them cry is progress that shows true strength. Strength that you can’t get from a dumbbell or any other piece of exercise equipment. It’s strength of character that is within all the women I get to work with. Yes it has been a hectic week and as I start another day early this morning I can honestly say I love what I do. I love my one on one clients. I love my group training members. Do you know what gaining Muscles while losing fat simultaneously known as? It is called body recomposition It's a combination of fat loss and muscle gain over time (Our Primary Goal) Those two can happen at the same time, or they can happen in different phases (some more focused on fat loss, others more on muscle building). Either way, body recomp is much more important than just weight loss when it comes to body transformation. Seeing the scale go down is often a part of the process, especially if you have significant weight you want to lose. But it's just one vertical of progress. I always tell this. The scale is a useful tool, but progress goes much deeper than that. I've coached many buddies who saw incredible overall progress - built muscle, burned fat, boosted strength, got leaner, and that's WITH the scale not moving all that much. Focus on body recomp > just weight loss. It involves more lifting, building muscle, getting stronger, fueling your body, and better energy levels when done right. 💗WHY I PRIORITISE EXERCISE AS A MUM 💗 Finding time for exercise and fitness with young children is HARD. Some may think it’s selfish to be spending time exercising when I could be spending time with them. Some people say they feel guilty when they take that time to got for a run or workout because they could be doing something with their children. A lot of my clients are also parents and it’s a common theme. Making time for you is not selfish, it shouldn’t classed as a ‘luxury’ or something you feel guilty about. And here’s a few reasons why… 💗Making time to exercise gives you more energy, and releases endorphins to make you feel better. In turn giving you more patience to deal with ‘those days’. I tell my girls ‘Mummy needs time for her too’ and that is important. Important they grow up knowing how important self care is. 💗Being a parent is full on. It never stops so you need to ‘fill your cup’ from time to time to be able to keep giving. 💗Being fitter and healthier so you can run after your children, keep up with them and be the physically as strong as you can is only going to benefit you all. 💗You are leading by example. My girls love coming into my studio to ‘do their exercises’ or teach a class like Mummy 🥰 They put their ‘running shoes’ on and tell me they are going for a run doing laps of the kitchen and I LOVE it. They ask to see my watch and check my ‘circles’ and we go out for fresh air to ‘get our steps in. 😂 Knowing I am instilling healthy habits in my children. Knowing they see it as part of daily life makes me feel proud. ⏰HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE? ⏰ It’s a common theme and I hear it a lot. “I just don't have the time". Time is one of the biggest excuses or barriers that people have towards reaching their goals. I am a mummy to 2 very dependent little ones, I run a house, I run my own business which means I am doing some form of work at least 6 days a week most of the time. I GET IT! “Online Training has helped me achieve more confidence.” Alice joined my 1:1 Live Coaching Programme nearly four months ago. Her main goal was to lose weight, but that wasn’t her only goal. Alice also wanted to gain more strength and muscle so that she felt stronger in her body. Training one-to-one with a personal trainer was completely new to Alice. Before joining my strength programme she had only attended group fitness classes, but after a solid 6 months of classes, she had not made the progress she had hoped for. Alice spends most of her working week at her desk and commutes to work, so one of the first things we worked on was increasing Alice’s activity level by setting a realistic step count target for the week. That way, she could increase the time she spent being active without draining her energy or cutting into the time that she had to spend at work or wanted to enjoy with friends and family. Alice does not have a gym membership, so our 3 weekly training sessions take place over Zoom, using 3 Kettlebells and some resistance bands. “ I feel stronger in every session.” In just 12 weeks, Alice has achieved some pretty amazing things: ⭐ INCREASED SELF-CONFIDENCE & BETTER LIFTING TECHNIQUE: Alice can now do heavy deadlifts with a kettlebell confidently & perform core exercises without any lower back pain; ⭐ INCREASED STRENGTH: With every single week that has gone by, Alice has increased how much she can lift and/or how many reps she can do; ⭐ WEIGHT-LOSS: By the end of Week 12 of her training programme, Alice had lost 4.8kg, and felt happy that she could now wear the clothes she wore before the pandemic hit; ⭐ BETTER BODY AWARENESS: Alice now has a greater understanding of how her body moves as well as how to adapt her nutrition and workouts in line with how her body is responding to fatigue and hormonal fluctuations. “Online training works for me because it gives me the motivation to work-out consistently.” Alice is a great example of what you can achieve when you invest in yourself, commit to your goals and your plan to reach them. “It gives me a psychological boost to know I'm fit and giving myself time to improve my fitness." Meet Rachel, one of my amazing online personal training clients. In addition to having a full-time job in a busy corporate role, Rachel also juggles the role of being a mother to a two-year old and on top of all that, trains with me twice a week for an hour. “It’s great how online training can fit around my lifestyle. I don’t have to travel. I can be with my son 5 mins before and 5 mins after.” Rachel started online training because she needed some time for herself and an injection of positive energy. At the height of the pandemic, her son was a newborn, life was pretty full-on and she needed some headspace. Rachel has found that and more in online training. “The best thing about training with you in the last 12 months is feeling stronger. I can now squat down and play with my son better than I ever could before, and I’m sure I’m stronger lifting/carrying him too.” Over the last year Rachel’s upper body strength has increased, her upper back pain has reduced, and she has even mentioned seeing definition in her stomach (which was never a primary goal!), and feeling more toned. Rachel does a lot with a little. She doesn’t have a gym space to do her workouts. She uses her living room. She doesn’t have tons of training kit either. Her equipment toolkit includes resistance bands, gliders, a weighted backpack and a kettlebell. Sometimes Rachel shows up to a session with less energy than she’d like, and we change the training programme to reflect that so that every session ends with Rachel feeling energised, mentally alert and feeling physically capable to tackle the multitude of tasks that her day will throw at her. Rachel is living proof that: ❌ You don’t need to train 5 hours per week to get stronger and fitter ✅ You need to show up for yourself and be consistent ❌ You don’t need to own every piece of gym equipment in order to see results ✅ You need an effective training plan and the right tools for your goal and skill level 😊 You are allowed and should allow yourself to have a time and space that is for you, and you alone. You know why @itrainsa works? Because it thrives on the energy of those that commit to it. The level of passion & dedication is unreal sometimes. You see this lady Phume behind me, she's in it for 2 months only & she looks like a different person,losing 4kg in her first 2 weeks. We reckon if @itrainsa had a brand ambassador, it would be her. She cheers us on, insists on facing eachother so we can feed off our energies & boost eachother. Giselle over there on the right, she's dynamite!! She joined in November 21,and she's lost tons of weight, but more than that,she's super fit now! I told her she's my inspiration, literally my "influencer" right now. That other darling on the left is the sweetest, doesn't look like she needs to lose an inch but fitness matters too,and her smile is infectious. We were trained by @lowiee_khumalow yesterday, the same trainer who my then 4 year old daughter became obsessed with at the kids fit camp in 2019. She pushed us to our limits,and I felt like an Olympics heavy weight lifter. But shew,we came out bouncing! Where were you 6 months ago and where do you want to be 6 months from now? 6 months ago I lost the ability to do what I love everyday I couldn’t train I couldn’t work I couldn’t eat I felt the lowest I had in a long time. All the work I had put in to building my body felt gone - I couldn’t handle a 10 min walk and moving any degree of weight wasn’t even in question for about a month I realize how grateful I should be for having such a quick recovery but I truly believe I wouldn’t have moved very far if I waited for things to piece together on their own You too have a choice to make, in whatever situation. Yes, life sometimes has a way of getting things to workout on their own - but do you have that kind of time? If you could look at yourself 6 months into the future from today … do you want to be in the same position? What would you like to have achieved?
